IGD: Padres vs Red Sox (22 Jun 07)
Fri, Jun 22, 2007by Geoff Young

| sp: | Greg Maddux (6-3, 3.90) vs Daisuke Matsuzaka (8-5, 4.18) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
Welcome to the (hype) machine. The Red Sox are in town for the weekend. Daisuke Matsuzaka gets the call on Friday night.
Matsuzaka has been solid, if unspectacular, in his first season in North America. One interesting thing about him is that hitters appear to have trouble in early at-bats and then are able to make adjustments after they’ve seen him:

Here’s another way to look at it:

So, you can get to Matsuzaka, but don’t be surprised if it doesn’t happen right away. Go Padres!

Oh man, I’ve been getting such crap all day from my friends and coworkers. I really hope we take this series so on Monday I can do a really annoying victory dance right in their faces.
GO PADRES!!!!
June 22, 2007 at 6:12 pm
GY, I appreciate your endless optimism, but I disliked being shut down by the Os in the last two games and the constant pressure on our pitching that their hitters put on us.
This will be a true test. Hype aside, this is a very good team we face. Their third order wins on BP are 46.4, well ahead of second best (As, at 41.7). The Padres, for reference, are 40.3.
Maddux, Young and Peavy: we’re given them the best we got, so let’s hope the baseball gods smile upon us.
June 22, 2007 at 6:18 pm
Psyched for this one. Watching on the tube tonight and thinking about going down to the Gaslamp tomorrow night. The people-watching should be outstanding - Boston fans are, um, boisterous.
June 22, 2007 at 6:25 pm
2: Jay-you make a good point about the rotation. Against Baltimore we got beat by a guy who’s been hot and had dominating stuff (Guthrie) and one of the best pitchers in baseball (Bedrard). In this series we’ve got our three best guys going against three of their best. I’m excited and optimistic. I think with Peavy and Young, we’ve got a chance to take 2/3 from the Sox and quiet down the “NL is a second division” talk for a bit.
GO PADRES!
June 22, 2007 at 6:52 pm
#4: Paul, I totally agree with everything you just said. Let’s hope we can get some good contact hits and RBIs from the git-go.
June 22, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Maddux being Maddux. Nice first.
June 22, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Good work by Maddux working out of trouble. The pitch that break Ortiz’s bat was awesome.
June 22, 2007 at 7:11 pm
Nice start for Maddux. Looks like he’s in play-off mode.
June 22, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Maddux is so much fun to watch. Hopefully he keeps it up. Assist to Petco, eating the Manny drive alive.
June 22, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Great start by NOG!
June 22, 2007 at 7:16 pm
I have a box of Coco Crisp in my cupboard collecting dust.
June 22, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Alrighty now. Good disciplined at-bats to start.
June 22, 2007 at 7:20 pm
NOG is SAFE!!!!!!! Woooohoooo!!!!!
June 22, 2007 at 7:21 pm
that would have been some sh*t if Giles got thrown out because the ump took the ball off the foot
June 22, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Wow! The intimidation and reputation of Dice-K seems to be quickly disappearing. Way to work the count guys!
June 22, 2007 at 7:24 pm
Domo Adigato Mister Roboto!
June 22, 2007 at 7:24 pm
You can walk another if you want Dicey.
June 22, 2007 at 7:24 pm
We’ve seen this before - bases loaded, no outs, gotta score…
(at least Matsuzaka’s pitch count is skyrocketing)
June 22, 2007 at 7:26 pm
Thank you KT for that Barret deal.
June 22, 2007 at 7:28 pm
How many has he thrown in the dirt so far?
June 22, 2007 at 7:29 pm
THAT WAS OUTSIDE
June 22, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Great pitch to get him out. At least it wasn’t a double play.
June 22, 2007 at 7:29 pm
Khalil got screwed.
June 22, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Great job by Maddux to get out of the top half, by the way. Nice swing by Barrett.
Khalil did everything he could in that AB, narrowly missing a double. That called K was outside.
June 22, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Re 22 - yeah, on replay that was a great pitch. The second strike to Branyan was also awesome.
June 22, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Shit. We needed more than 1 there. Credit Mike Cameron with killing that rally.
June 22, 2007 at 7:36 pm
Well, getting one run there wasn’t all bad. Matsuzaka’s evening (probably) just got a lot shorter…then again, the Sox ‘pen is rather good.
June 22, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Oh yeah, sorry Rick Schroder about the “Hottie Cam” not being a reoccuring theme from our camera crew. I definitely feel your pain.
June 22, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Man, I’m so on edge for this game and its the top of the second. And we’re winning!
Definitely a playoff atmosphere tonite. Kinda glad that Maddux is getting the call for the first game.
June 22, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Beautiful DP. Khalil just makes that look so smooth and easy.
June 22, 2007 at 7:47 pm
#28: Yeah, I miss the ‘Hottie Cam.’
June 22, 2007 at 7:48 pm
#29 - “Definitely a playoff atmosphere tonite. Kinda glad that Maddux is getting the call for the first game.”
I could not agree more with both you’re statements there.
June 22, 2007 at 7:48 pm
wow that pitch to NOG was nasty
June 22, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Some great D tonite by the boys.
June 22, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Wow! Mud just added sound effects to Coco’s stance habits. That was good.
June 22, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Off-topic but of note: The Royals (of all clubs) acquired Milton Bradley today from the As.
June 22, 2007 at 7:56 pm
Parents should have named him Toasted Crisp.
June 22, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Unfortunately, Dice K looks to be settling in.
June 22, 2007 at 8:07 pm
Indeed
June 22, 2007 at 8:08 pm
So far, Barrett > Matsuzaka
June 22, 2007 at 8:08 pm
MB on again. Lets see if KG can keep it alive.
June 22, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Dice K has certainly found his rythm. C’mon Khalil!
June 22, 2007 at 8:13 pm
LM’s not around, so…
Through 3:
Matsuzaka 72-44
Maddux 42-31
June 22, 2007 at 8:21 pm
And the umpire blowing Maddux’s K comes back to haunt him.
June 22, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Mr. Maddux is not a happy man.
June 22, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Barrett comes through again.
June 22, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Wow, we just caught someone stealing!
June 22, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Unfortunately, pitch count is not an issue for Dice K. The guy is like a robot.
June 22, 2007 at 8:51 pm
A three run knock by Barrett would work for me. Anyone else?
June 22, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Grrrrrrrr.
June 22, 2007 at 8:53 pm
dang. Barrett does have Matsuzaka figured out, though.
June 22, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Man we just cannot catch a break tonite.
June 22, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Khalil’s ball just barely foul, Man-Ram’s just barely fair. Pedroia makes a great play to rob Barret of a knock and an RBI. Dice-K is getting the close calls that Maddux isn’t. And nothing we do is falling in.
June 22, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Mud is opining about hosiery. For the record, I agree - stirrups rock.
June 22, 2007 at 9:02 pm
53 - word. Other than Barrett’s first inning single finding a hole, we haven’t caught a break tonight.
June 22, 2007 at 9:03 pm
I think Mud is the last remaining member of the “Members Only” club.
June 22, 2007 at 9:04 pm
57 - no doubt. His closet must contain some spectacular relics.
June 22, 2007 at 9:08 pm
C’mon Branyan. We need a knock!
June 22, 2007 at 9:09 pm
C’mon Kouzy.
June 22, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Headley - c’mon kid
June 22, 2007 at 9:14 pm
niiiiiiice
June 22, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Way to leg it out Chase! Nice play!
June 22, 2007 at 9:15 pm
C’mon Marcus, we need a knock here. Just a base hit to tie it.
June 22, 2007 at 9:15 pm
NOG swung at that AFTER it was in the catcher’s mit.
June 22, 2007 at 9:19 pm
argh. nine runners left on. gonna have to beat their bullpen.
June 22, 2007 at 9:20 pm
cruisin in an automatic tonight, we got no clutch!
June 22, 2007 at 9:24 pm
Crisp’s routine at bat is comical.
June 22, 2007 at 9:24 pm
To get in the last name of my favorite Devil Ray draftee and my true thoughts toward the inhabitants (mostly) of Petco tonight…
Fronk you, Red Sox
fansbandwagon riders.June 22, 2007 at 9:26 pm
67 - did you notice that Pedroia does the Nomar thing, adjusting his batting gloves between pitches? Talk about liquid annoying.
June 22, 2007 at 9:26 pm
The Padres are just not getting lucky tonite. I sincerely hope we win this game, because it will set the tone for the series.
By the way, Cla seems like he’s addressed whatever kinks he was facing earlier this year.
June 22, 2007 at 9:28 pm
#69: No. But, now that you’ve made it a point…
June 22, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Cameron has been useless this evening. He’s popped out twice with men on.
June 22, 2007 at 9:38 pm
Ten runners left on is the epitome of a frustrating evening. Just one timely hit, that’s all we ask.
June 22, 2007 at 9:40 pm
We have to win this game. We cannot keep letting them get off the freakin hook.
June 22, 2007 at 9:42 pm
I think the 75% humidity is making most fly balls drop faster than on a crisp night.
June 22, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Linebrink is *pumped*. Nice work there.
June 22, 2007 at 9:45 pm
We have GOT to score some freaking runs!
June 22, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Nice outing for Scotty.
Santa, all I want for Christmas is to beat the Sox at home and shut up all the bandwagoneers.
June 22, 2007 at 9:47 pm
Ugh. Okajima is filthy.
June 22, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Alright, we need it here. Let’s go, Khalil.
June 22, 2007 at 9:49 pm
Yikes, he’s making a mess of Khalil.
June 22, 2007 at 9:54 pm
Well, how many saves has Papelbon blown this year? Could we add another? Please?
June 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm
Ring looked fantastic. May we never see Brocail again.
June 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm
It’s now or never boys, c’mon!
June 22, 2007 at 9:59 pm
Well, at least Ring has looked good tonight.
June 22, 2007 at 10:07 pm
Padres have played well tonight. Just haven’t caught the breaks.
June 22, 2007 at 10:08 pm
We just had some ‘Hottie Cam’ action.
June 22, 2007 at 10:11 pm
THis is the way it should be. It’s all up to Adrian.
June 22, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Nice work by Jose. Let’s see what A-Gon can do…
June 22, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive…
June 22, 2007 at 10:12 pm
You’d think this was game one of the World Series.
June 22, 2007 at 10:12 pm
C’mon Adrian, rope one into right center. Double to right center scores Cruz.
June 22, 2007 at 10:12 pm
That was outside!!!!!!!!
June 22, 2007 at 10:13 pm
That’s what’s been happening all nite.
June 22, 2007 at 10:16 pm
Grrrrrrr. Lousy outcome, but a well-played game all around. Could have used a little more clutch hitting though.
June 22, 2007 at 10:18 pm
Toe to toe, I think we stood up pretty well to Boston tonight. The box score will say this should have been a laugher, but our defense came through to keep this a low scorer. I’m not ashamed to lose to the Sox 2-1. Shame was getting the shit kicked out of us against the O’s. Fun game to watch. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.
June 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm
What is it with the ball/strike calls the Padres have been getting this past month? That 1-2 pitch to Khalil by Dice-K that he got called for a strike in the first. The 0-2 pitch to Maddux that tails back over the plate for a ball (Youklis then hits an RBI single). Maddux has particularly seen some piss poor umpiring.
Mike Cameron continues to have poor ABs with men on. He popped out weakly tonite twice, early in the counts. There’s no reason we should have lost this game.
June 22, 2007 at 10:20 pm
Down on the Farm … Thompson with a decent outing tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_freaaa_1
… best news is LaForest’s 17th HR … that’s a lot … still only hitting .216, however …
June 22, 2007 at 10:21 pm
Way too many guys left on base.
June 22, 2007 at 10:23 pm
At AA San Antonio … Cesar Ramos with a GEM …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_sanaax_1
… CG 3-hit shutout with 0 walks (only 4 Ks)! Nice! And Nick Hundley went 3-for-4, his avg now up to .245.
June 22, 2007 at 10:24 pm
The STORM get solo shots from Antonelli (#10) and Freese (#10) in the first … then nada …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lesafa_1
June 22, 2007 at 10:26 pm
Great game, although very frustrating. My pet peeves are losing games due to guys left on base and due to singles by the other team, both of which happened tonight. But that was the worst pitching matchup of the weekend for us, and with one well-timed single we would have won.
Royce Ring is all kinds of awesome.
June 22, 2007 at 10:27 pm
Eugene Emeralds go to 3-1 with a W tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_spoasx_1
… another hit and walk for Danny Payne (he’s now 4-for-10 with 9 walks in 4 games)!
Matt Latos is scheduled to start for them tomorrow, his pro debut.
June 22, 2007 at 10:29 pm
And finally, in case you missed the news earlier, the baby-Padres (aka AZL Padres) played their Opening Day game this morning, losing 6-5 in 11 … but the big news was Matt Bush pitching a clean inning with 2 Ks … and Yefri (the Great) going 2-for-5.

June 22, 2007 at 10:30 pm
Forgive me, but is a gyro ball what we called a screw ball back in the day?
June 22, 2007 at 10:33 pm
madfriars.com has reported this: Injury notes from Portland:
Outfielder Vincent Sinisi has been bothered for the past couple of weeks by a sore left hip. It’s caused him to miss three recent starts after missing just one all season.
In the last two days, three Beaver players have left games in Fresno with injuries: infielder Frank Menechino left Wednesday’s game with a calf injury; infielder Oscar Robles came out of the same game after rolling on his left wrist while diving for a ball; and outfielder Paul McAnulty came out of last night’s game with an apparent right thigh injury sustained while running down the first base line.
LHP Adrian Burnside has been sent to Portland from Double-A San Antonio. Infielder Oscar Robles was placed on the DL.
June 22, 2007 at 10:34 pm
105 … no … it is a new/unique pitch … i don’t understand what’s new/different about it … but a writer at BP (Will Carroll) has studied it a lot … do a google search and see what you find.
June 22, 2007 at 10:35 pm
The Matsuzaka stories by Matt and Mud sounded like the Chuck Norris facts after a while. You know, “Dice-K doesn’t strike out batters. He stares them down until they realize the futility of their at bat and they sit back down.”
June 22, 2007 at 10:39 pm
#108: Ahhh Grasshopper…
June 22, 2007 at 10:57 pm
Turns out Bradley wasn’t really traded to the Royals. An oblique injury was discovered, so the trade was called off. I’d still like to see the Padres get him, use him when he’s healthy and try to ensure he’s ready for the stretch run and the playoffs. He’ll still upgrade the team when he’s in there, and we have the guys to replace him when he’s injured.
