IGD: Padres vs Orioles (21 Jun 07)

| sp: | David Wells (3-4, 4.86) vs Erik Bedard (4-4, 3.64) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
David Wells pitched for the Orioles in 1996. Went 11-14 with a 5.14 ERA.
Wells’ teammates on that club included Hall of Famers Cal Ripken and Eddie Murray; Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell; San Diego native Brady Anderson; and ex-Padres Roberto Alomar, Manny Alexander, Pete Incaviglia, Mark Parent, Eugene Kingsale, Randy Myers, and Jesse Orosco.
There truly is no escaping Alexander. He batted .103/.141/.103 in 73 plate appearances that year and even made his lone big-league pitching appearance: faced seven batters, walking four and serving up a grand slam to Kevin Elster.
Relevance? Hey, I gotta talk about something. Go Padres!

I hope Barrett doesn’t punch somebody today. OG might want to wait on the “Padre Hug.” Barrett might not understand. Looks like a great day down at Petco, go pads.
June 21, 2007 at 12:26 pm
Ah, Kevin Elster…memories of hording Donruss “Rated Rookies.”
June 21, 2007 at 12:36 pm
Kouz is back, batting #7.
June 21, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Long live Manny Alexander!
June 21, 2007 at 12:37 pm
Ah, too bad about Kouz being back. I was hoping to see Barrett at 3rd.
June 21, 2007 at 12:40 pm
From Jayson Stark at ESPN:
• Finally, what’s the biggest crisis in Chicago following the Cubs’ trade of Michael Barrett? They traded him six days before Michael Barrett Jersey Day and 11 days before Michael Barrett Bobblehead Day.
June 21, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Miguel Tejada gets an at-bat to maintain his consecutive game streak and is removed from the game. Pathetic.
June 21, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Hey, Rob Bowen is doing well in his first game with the Cubs:
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270621113.
Good for him.
June 21, 2007 at 12:44 pm
7: That’s why he started the game? Man, that’s awful.
Barrett with a passed ball. Not a good start with the Padres.
June 21, 2007 at 12:44 pm
#7: That is really strange. Why would you pull one of your better hitters and shorten the bench in the first inning?
June 21, 2007 at 12:45 pm
#10: He’s hurt.
June 21, 2007 at 12:47 pm
NOG picks up from where he left off last night.
June 21, 2007 at 12:49 pm
Milton Bradley (DFA’d by the A’s this morning), anyone?
June 21, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Sounds like it’s going to be another frustrating day for the offense.
June 21, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Craig Stansberry is going to appear in the Futures Game as the only Padre representative.
REACTION!!!!!!
June 21, 2007 at 1:19 pm
I think I’d love to know what some of the current Padres thought of Bradley, but his .300/.380/.450 line would sure look nice in RF for the rest of the year. He’s also a good defensive outfielder
June 21, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Good to see the Padres manufacture a run. Bedard isn’t going to give them away easily.
And a nice clean shot for Cruz!
June 21, 2007 at 1:27 pm
#15: Good thing we claimed him off waivers from the Pirates before the season so we’d have a representative?
June 21, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Re: 18 its not like the all star game where each team sends a player?
June 21, 2007 at 1:44 pm
#19: No clue; I’m being a smart-ass. The more serious answer is that the decision makers overlooked a lot of good hitters at Elsinore.
June 21, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Do they send alot of Low A Ball players?
June 21, 2007 at 1:50 pm
What happened? Kouz rushed the throw?
June 21, 2007 at 1:53 pm
wow really giving him the outside corner
June 21, 2007 at 1:53 pm
According to GameDay, the umpire is giving a lot of the outside corner.
June 21, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Re: 24 for both teams?
June 21, 2007 at 1:54 pm
#21: Not sure, but Barfield represented Elsinore in ‘03.
June 21, 2007 at 1:55 pm
21: Some teams have sent A ball players in the past. The Cal League is high A. Most kids in the Futures Game seem to be AA or above, though.
June 21, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Re: 27 yeah i meant high A, it always seems like AA is the most represented level
June 21, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Why oh why oh why is Wells staying in the game? We need all the offense we can get, the bullpen should be well-rested and Wells hasn’t had it since pitch 1. If we can stay within a couple runs and get Bedard out of the game before the 8th - we’ll have a good chance to score off the bullpen and reclaim this game.
Leaving a struggling Wells in there is NOT a part of the winning equation. Be happy you got 5 innings of 1 ER ball out of him and RUN.
June 21, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Oops! 2 ER now.
June 21, 2007 at 2:02 pm
Sigh. Alberto frickin’ Castillo.
June 21, 2007 at 2:02 pm
EARTH TO BUDDY - what are you doing? When will you EVER learn?
ARRRRRRRRGHGHGHHHGHGHGH!
June 21, 2007 at 2:04 pm
Is the bullpen getting busy after that HR or now?
June 21, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Not after the HR (as far as we were shown), but at the very end of the inning they showed Cla up in the pen.
Sigh.
June 21, 2007 at 2:07 pm
Yeah, it really doesn’t look like Wells going 6 is a reality at this point, unless you’re up by 4-5 runs.
June 21, 2007 at 2:08 pm
#33: Cla was up that last inning.
June 21, 2007 at 2:08 pm
Wells 87-61 pitches. HR was off his 76th pitch. Yup, just about right there.
June 21, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Did we ever find out for sure if Cust was traded for a PTBNL or sold for cash? Bradley would be a nice PTBNL. KT said yesterday that there wasn’t a player out there who could hurt the chemistry in this clubhouse. Could he have been referencing Bradley with that statement as well?
I could live with Black leaving pitchers out too long in the early going because he needed to learn how far these guys could go. But it’s been obvious since April that Wells is a 5 inning pitcher, 6 is pushing it. His reluctance to pull the veteran starters is really hurting the team.
June 21, 2007 at 2:14 pm
I think Cust was for cash already.
June 21, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Nice Job Mike stay HOT
June 21, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Mike Cameron pull the ball on first pitch. He’s lucky that’s not a DP.
June 21, 2007 at 2:17 pm
I don’t know if they are showing this out there but the Baltimore announcers have been going on about some money that has been falling from the upper deck. They are having WAY too much fun with this and they are especially giving Freddie Bynum a hard time for reaching out and catching some of the money.
Now they are showing a camera and talking about the ball boy who got some of the cash too. I think I’m about at a point where I am going to mute the sound.
June 21, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Here I was thinking Cameron went with the pitch after seeing “In Play, run(s)”. Instead it looks like he tried to pull it and grounded out (presumably weakly) to third.
Oh well, at least we’re only down 1 now…
June 21, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Bedard 79-55 after 6 innings. Don’t know if the Padres will get to their bullpen. It’d be nice.
June 21, 2007 at 2:21 pm
What the heck is Boomer still out there?
June 21, 2007 at 2:23 pm
HE’S STILL IN?!!?!?!
June 21, 2007 at 2:23 pm
38: His inability to handle his pitching staff period is really hurting the team. I know, I know, we’re in first place and our pitching staff has the lowest ERA in the majors etc etc etc, but to me that says tons about the talent we have and not so much about Bud. When you get down to it, Bud’s poor handling of our older pitchers and his overuse of Brocail has cost this team *at least* a few games. And it’s frustrating as hell.
And now he’s blabbing about re-arranging the pitching rotation to get Jake his one-two innings at a stupid exhibition game that the NL always loses anyway.
I need to just ignore the pitching decisions or I’ll be in the nut house before too soon.
I just realized Boomer is STILL out there.
June 21, 2007 at 2:24 pm
#45: Because we only have seven guys in the bullpen.
June 21, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Bases loaded, no outs and in came Heath Bell.
Where’s the logic in that? Bud should be reprimanded after this game.
Maybe, he needs a Padres hug from OG or something. Anything to stop him from letting Boomer pitch past 70-80 pitches again.
June 21, 2007 at 2:26 pm
I think Black is demonstrating that no matter who a team’s manager is, he’s always going to have some tendencies that drive folks crazy.
June 21, 2007 at 2:28 pm
And Bell is a stud.
June 21, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Oops, one out, runners at 1st and 2nd.
Lucky play there. Good job, boys. Bud still should get a Padres Hug from OG.
June 21, 2007 at 2:31 pm
50: Leaving Boomer out to fail should not be one of the tendencies that’s not correctable, nor one that he should use from Bochy’s.
June 21, 2007 at 2:36 pm
A little surprised that we didn’t see a lefty PH for either Kouz or Bocachica last inning against Bradford…Why no Sledge or Branyan?
June 21, 2007 at 2:37 pm
#53: Could be. That said, I’m not holding my breath.
June 21, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Wells 97-66 in 6 IP. At the end of 6 IP, he was at 87-61.
In the 7th, he gave up a single, a walk, and a single.
Those 10 extra pitches almost add more runs had Markakis not been caught stealing, and Bell got the DP.
This is not the first time Boomer got into trouble past 80 pitches. He’s also a diabetic now. Extra care should be taken to keep Boomer fresh to pitch every 5th day. He should probably be skipped for his next start but there is no day off before his next turn.
June 21, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Dang it. Bases loaded, 1 out.
Was the wild pitch really one or another passed ball? I’m thinking Barrett is still new with this pitching staff.
COME ON, Padres! DP ball here.
June 21, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Guess not. Chris Gomez came through with 2 runs.
June 21, 2007 at 2:47 pm
DUDE… This is F-ING weak!!!
June 21, 2007 at 2:48 pm
We’re getting pwned by the Orioles. How irritating.
June 21, 2007 at 2:48 pm
We just dropped a series to the ORIOLES.
[Feel free to prove me wrong with that one Padres, but I'm not holding my breath for your offense.]
June 21, 2007 at 2:50 pm
60.
HAHAHA
Uber-Pwnage!
June 21, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Okay, Rally Time, boys!
6 outs to go to score lots of runs.
June 21, 2007 at 2:52 pm
B-YAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
June 21, 2007 at 2:52 pm
Go Shakespeare!
June 21, 2007 at 2:53 pm
61: Orioles bullpen vs. Padres offense for 6 outs…I think it’s not too much less than 50/50 that we score 3
June 21, 2007 at 2:53 pm
There is a perfect example of why we don’t want Patterson next year!
June 21, 2007 at 2:53 pm
I thought that I was going to heare Barde hit ye inside the parke HRe
June 21, 2007 at 2:55 pm
RBI, RBI, Where for out thou RBI?
June 21, 2007 at 2:55 pm
That’s irritating! Come on, boys. Bring the runner home from 3rd.
June 21, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Let’s get a run here guys!
June 21, 2007 at 2:56 pm
A run! A run! My kingdom for a run!
June 21, 2007 at 2:57 pm
To score or not to score, that is the question.
I guess that “no” is the answer
June 21, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Geoff, if you’re going to sacrifice your kingdom, at least hold out for three runs.
June 21, 2007 at 2:59 pm
72: Nice Richard III reference!
June 21, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Get Towers on your side and negotiate four runs for that kingdom of yours Geoff.
June 21, 2007 at 3:00 pm
I Guess the AL is really better than the NL
June 21, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Damn it, Bud. Overuse of Cla is not nice.
June 21, 2007 at 3:04 pm
This is why the O’s concerned me. I hate to see a team come into town that has nothing left to lose.
June 21, 2007 at 3:05 pm
The problem with this game is that once again, the media is going to print that Boomer lacks run support. Dang it!
June 21, 2007 at 3:06 pm
80:
Wasn’t part of the problem today that Boomer lacked run support…?
June 21, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Especially when Patterson, Castillo, and Gomez were driving in runs.
That’s baseball, though.
June 21, 2007 at 3:08 pm
Could be a long weekend. Maybe it’s the Barrett curse. Nah, they have lacked clutch hitting all year.
June 21, 2007 at 3:10 pm
81: Yes, PART of the problem. I’m saying that’s the only part that will be covered.
June 21, 2007 at 3:15 pm
How about just lacked of hitting in this game, and walking. And lots of striking out.
June 21, 2007 at 3:15 pm
I guess this is what happens when your two worst pitchers face their two best. Unfortunately it does not look any easier the next few days.
June 21, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Go Kouz!
June 21, 2007 at 3:18 pm
We should be happy we’re only down four going into the bottom of the ninth. The Orioles have left a bucket-load on base, while the Padres, not so much.
The Padres will get national television coverage on the back of the Red Sox coming to town. Unless they play better against the first place team from the AL East then they did against the last place team in the AL East (who had lost 8 straight coming in), as a team, they won’t deserve much positive coverage until they show they can beat some good teams.
June 21, 2007 at 3:18 pm
Let’s go, Russell!
June 21, 2007 at 3:19 pm
Blum’s on-deck as the tying run…we’ve still got a chance!
June 21, 2007 at 3:19 pm
nope…
June 21, 2007 at 3:20 pm
I don’t want to sound negative, but losing two to Baltimore is unacceptable (guess that sounds negative).
Bring on the Sox…………
June 21, 2007 at 3:21 pm
Anyone want to compare how the Padres bullpen did vs. the Orioles bullpen in the series? I’m not convinced we came out on top, despite the 6 run sixth in the first game.
June 21, 2007 at 3:23 pm
Well, that’s game.
The Orioles is the better team of this contest!
They scored runs even while hitting into 3 DPs.
June 21, 2007 at 3:24 pm
88: You mean like the Rockies sweeping the Yankees? Go Rox!
92: Or getting swept by the Mariners.
June 21, 2007 at 3:32 pm
93: The Padres bullpen gave up 10 runs in 8.2 IP versus 8 runs in 7.1 IP for the Orioles.
June 21, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Let’s hope that the pre tag works as well as it does in the preview….
June 21, 2007 at 3:37 pm
If we went 2-1 instead of 1-2 we’d find that acceptable, right? So why get bent out of shape over 1 game? The difference in the series was we ran into a dominating pitcher last night.
Bring on the Red Sox! I predict a series win for the Pads, possibly even a sweep.
June 21, 2007 at 3:37 pm
Bedard (5-4) gave up two runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out nine and walked none, and left after straining his left hamstring.
No wonder he didn’t go back out to pitch.
June 21, 2007 at 3:38 pm
Nope….
June 21, 2007 at 3:42 pm
98: Because one game is the difference between losing a play-off series 3-2 or 2-3 (or worse yet 3-4, instead of 4-3).
My comment during the Braves series was that the Padres were unable to dominate the weaker teams in the league (e.g., sweeping last place teams instead of settling for a series win). Yes we swept a first place team (the Brewers) and a good team (the Dodgers), but we’re going to lose series to good teams at least half the time, so we better pad our record by sweeping the crummy ones.
June 21, 2007 at 3:47 pm
98: I actually wanted the Padres to sweep the Orioles and the Red Sox.
Half of my wish can still happen.
June 21, 2007 at 3:51 pm
I don’t buy 101. Last year, in the second half alone, the Cardinals were swept by the Cubs, Pirates, and Astros, lost three out of 4 to the Diamondbacks, and lost two out of three to the Nationals. It is about winning enough to make the playoffs, and winning when you need to win in the playoffs. No more. No less.
June 21, 2007 at 4:02 pm
103: The 2005 Padres went into the play-offs as the underdog and got swept. The 2006 Padres went into the play-offs as the favorites and came close to being swept.
I don’t want to go into the 2007 play-offs hoping we can repeat the Cardinals performance (e.g., back into the playoffs and then counting on the theory that anything can happen in a short series - 1984 and 1998 make me dubious).
The Padres have shown the former ability over the past two years. They haven’t shown the latter.
With the NL West being much better then past years, winning enough to make the playoffs is a much bigger ask this year then past years. Trouncing weaker teams makes it much easier to do that.
June 21, 2007 at 4:07 pm
104: That’s nice on paper and principle. However, even a bad team don’t lose all the games they played. The Padres faced their best two starters in the last two games and lost and looked bad doing it.
It’s baseball, what are you gonna do? Can’t win them all. The Friars are still in first place of NL West. Look at the bright side, the Padres should be fired up to sweep the Red Sox after this.
Go Padres!
