IGD: Padres vs Mariners (8 Jun 07)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Justin Germano (4-0, 1.74 ERA) vs Miguel Batista (6-4, 5.43 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com

Not much more to say about this “rivalry” that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll turn instead to something a reader alerted me to the other day. So far under Bud Black’s watch, the Padres have outhomered the opposition. How rare is this? You tell me:

Random notes:

  • The first time the Padres had a positive differential came in 1970, when they outhomered their opponents, 172-149. The Pads finished the season with a 63-99 record.
  • Dave Winfield paced the Padres with 13 homers in 1976, a season in which the Padres hit just 64 long balls, their lowest ever in a non-strike year.
  • In 1981, the club hit 32 home runs. Joe Lefebvre led the way with eight; nobody else hit even five.
  • The 1984 World Series team was outhomered, 122-109.
  • The Padres haven’t outpaced the opposition since the 1998 World Series team did it, 167-139.
  • In 2003, the Padres were outhomered, 208-128, their worst ever negative differential.
  • Over 6089 games as a big-league franchise, the Friars have surrendered 821 more home runs than they’ve hit.

I don’t know what bearing all this has on anything, but I found it interesting. Go Padres!

Looks like we may not have been the only ones that gave up on them last night:

Offense: Little by the Padres, who took two of three from the Dodgers despite generating only seven runs on 13 hits.

Craig Stansberry and Vince Sinisi rank 15th and 16th, respectively, in OPS in the PCL. Does anyone think these two guys will be big league regulars next year with some team?; will they possibly get called up this year by the Padres?

By the way, one Chase Headley leads the entire Texas League in OPS.

Royce Ring seems to be dominating AAA hitters. Andrew Brown was doing so at one point, but his ERA has risen to the mid-threes.

#1: I worked late last night and was chomping at the bit because I was missing the game. I listened to the first half of the 8th in the car on the way home and turned the TV on in the last of the bottom of the 8th at around 9:30ish. I thought, OK I’ll just watch the rest because it’ll be a quick loss. Boy was I wrong and glad that I didn’t have to watch the Dogs score those five runs. After a 16 hour day at the office, that was a nice win and sweep to come home to. :) -

I think Branyan’s best shot is in the OF like Anthony says. He can’t play middle infield, and the corners spots are taken by players we want around for 5 to 10 years….

I think it would be reasonable to Give Branyan most of the starts in Left in the upcoming series in Tampa and Chicago. Neither should be a serious challenge defensively for a left fielder.

99 Yes it would, as any normal thinking baseball person would know. If you and I can figure it out. Why can’t Grover? This is the same guy that would bring in extreme flyball pitcher.

Said pitcher blows it, and Grover goes on with “Well I brought Mateo in to the ground ball, but man (insert your favorite opposing player) crushed it.”

Well of course Mike, you don’t bring in a flyballer to get a ground out. Logic dictates you’re not going to get a groundball from said pitcher.

I’m going to take the Geoff Young outlook on this game. If we won every game of the season, there would be no point of the play-offs or the World Series. I think the sun will still rise in the East and set in the West tommorow. Dogs will still chase cats and Starbucks will continue to multiply like a colony of rabbits.
The world has not come to an end as of yet. Keep the faith!

Cla might need to go to Portland to work out his release point. Right handers are hitting .318 off him this year, they hit .107 off him last year. Against lefties he’s about the same.

115: That is tooo sweet! Even with a loss tonight. Hell, I was just impressed with the comeback to take it to extra inninings. You always want your team to win. However, this many games in a season, how can one bitch? Not I, the slayer of roosters!

Mea culpa – I checked out like I promised, but then checked back in too early (bottom 9 – tied). I turned it off right away, but obviously my bad karma undid TD’s 3rd rooster.

    We’ll get ‘em tomorrow.

I bet Towers is bummed about tonight, as I could definitely see him daydreaming of packaging Germano, Meredith, perhaps Sledge for Ichiro. They failed their auditions…

117: I’m taking roosters, chinken bones, bat’s wings, and my virgin daughter to the game tommorow. Should be a sure fire win.

Seriously, you can’t package a season in one game. We are the best team in MLB right now. The season isn’t even half over. This game just makes for good fodder for the XX show and all of us armchair managers. Enjoy the game and not just the moment.

For those of you going to the game with the Ducksnort group tommorow, see ya there. Looking forward to meeting all of you.

This game troubled me, not for the outcome (well, yes), but our offense. We were very, very fortunate to get our runs, and generally had pretty bad AB’s. Miguel Batista is an OK, back end pitcher but we made him look front end.

And Germano’s approach: lots of contact, low K’s, no BB’s and no HR’s does not work when he walks hitters and hits another. I still thought flipping him when he was hot would have been the heartless but shrewd thing to do. Maybe without tonight’s BB’s and HBP he would have put up similar numbers, so let’s hope.

Hiram’s steal attempt: man you have to be sure. He gets it, it is 3B and 1 out, improving our odds quite a bit, but you miss it…; yikes. It was a very close play against the back up catcher, but if the player tags the runner in the ass and he is fully extended to the bag, that implies his had should be on the bag. It was hard to tell, but a throw into the runner seems like it default ought to be safe unless you can clearly see he was out. If the throw beats the runner to the bag, the reverse should be true, but that did not happen. Grrrr.

I looked up the run probabilities (99-02); he makes it, we gain .258 runs (.725 to .983), but if we gets nailed we lose -.608 (.725 to .117). The breakeven probability of those two is 70%. So if Hiram was 70% sure or better that he could swipe the bag, good move. If not, bad move.

I was out of town for Bard’s hot streak, so I have just seen an endless stream of junk from him. Is it wrong I am looking forward to his suspension?

Meredith will work it out, but Balsley needs to get it working. So, Meredith has been giving up runs, Bard is not that sharp but it feels good to note that Mirabelli has an OPS of 590. I am glad he is enjoying his return to the “real big leagues”.
