first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Justin Germano (4-0, 1.74 ERA) vs Miguel Batista (6-4, 5.43 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Not much more to say about this “rivalry” that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll turn instead to something a reader alerted me to the other day. So far under Bud Black’s watch, the Padres have outhomered the opposition. How rare is this? You tell me:

Random notes:
- The first time the Padres had a positive differential came in 1970, when they outhomered their opponents, 172-149. The Pads finished the season with a 63-99 record.
- Dave Winfield paced the Padres with 13 homers in 1976, a season in which the Padres hit just 64 long balls, their lowest ever in a non-strike year.
- In 1981, the club hit 32 home runs. Joe Lefebvre led the way with eight; nobody else hit even five.
- The 1984 World Series team was outhomered, 122-109.
- The Padres haven’t outpaced the opposition since the 1998 World Series team did it, 167-139.
- In 2003, the Padres were outhomered, 208-128, their worst ever negative differential.
- Over 6089 games as a big-league franchise, the Friars have surrendered 821 more home runs than they’ve hit.
I don’t know what bearing all this has on anything, but I found it interesting. Go Padres!

Looks like we may not have been the only ones that gave up on them last night:

Craig Stansberry and Vince Sinisi rank 15th and 16th, respectively, in OPS in the PCL. Does anyone think these two guys will be big league regulars next year with some team?; will they possibly get called up this year by the Padres?
By the way, one Chase Headley leads the entire Texas League in OPS.
Royce Ring seems to be dominating AAA hitters. Andrew Brown was doing so at one point, but his ERA has risen to the mid-threes.

#1: I worked late last night and was chomping at the bit because I was missing the game. I listened to the first half of the 8th in the car on the way home and turned the TV on in the last of the bottom of the 8th at around 9:30ish. I thought, OK I’ll just watch the rest because it’ll be a quick loss. Boy was I wrong and glad that I didn’t have to watch the Dogs score those five runs. After a 16 hour day at the office, that was a nice win and sweep to come home to. :)-

I’m kind of indifferent about Canepa’s articles in the U-T. But I liked his write-up on Trevor in today’s edition.
June 8, 2007 at 7:12 pm
Good quick 1st half for Germano.
June 8, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Watch out, I’ve got a bad feeling that Germano’s about to come back to earth…
June 8, 2007 at 7:33 pm
A walk and a HBP, he’ll definitely be tested if he doesn’t have his usual control.
June 8, 2007 at 7:37 pm
IMO Branyan should be a position player.
June 8, 2007 at 7:39 pm
Re: 8 - Who sits?
June 8, 2007 at 7:43 pm
#9: Good question. I’m just trying to think of a way to get Silent L out of the equation in my head. Even though Silent L got hot for a few games recently, I don’t think that will last long. But, you bring up a good point.
June 8, 2007 at 7:44 pm
That breaking ball Germano struck out Guillen with was just beautiful.
June 8, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Sean, are you going to the game tommorow?
June 8, 2007 at 7:44 pm
Stick him in LF, we’ll have our poor man’s Adam Dunn without a trade.
June 8, 2007 at 7:46 pm
That was un-Greene like but a damn good effort.
June 8, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Good DP 1-4-3. Playing the basics. Nice.
June 8, 2007 at 7:48 pm
12: I don’t think I could make it to SD in time….
I think Branyan’s best shot is in the OF like Anthony says. He can’t play middle infield, and the corners spots are taken by players we want around for 5 to 10 years….
June 8, 2007 at 7:49 pm
I think it would be reasonable to Give Branyan most of the starts in Left in the upcoming series in Tampa and Chicago. Neither should be a serious challenge defensively for a left fielder.
June 8, 2007 at 7:50 pm
16: Agreed, LF would work.
June 8, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Girlie Mouth has shown up lately as well.
June 8, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Lets see if Justin can bunt…
June 8, 2007 at 7:51 pm
So what’s up with Germano’s pitch count? The Seattle Broadcast team was talking about the fact he’s never ventured over 95 pitches? And that as it sits he right about 52ish.
June 8, 2007 at 7:52 pm
A walk gets him over to 2nd as well….
June 8, 2007 at 7:52 pm
That worked.
June 8, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Get ‘em on, get ‘em over….
June 8, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Base hit ties it. Still early, though.
June 8, 2007 at 7:57 pm
…leave him stranded.
Sigh.
June 8, 2007 at 7:59 pm
How do you spell siyanara?
June 8, 2007 at 8:00 pm
#21: Germano’s big-league high is 105, which came in his second career start in 2004. Not sure about his minor-league numbers; my guess is he’s not on any limit.
June 8, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Sayonara
June 8, 2007 at 8:02 pm
#29: Thanks. LOL.
June 8, 2007 at 8:04 pm
I still can’t get over last night’s comeback sweep. I don’t think anyone saw that coming.
June 8, 2007 at 8:05 pm
That long, long swing of Sledge, either rolling out weakly to the right side or hitting a lazy fly to the outfield is growing tiresome. Thank god for Nomar’s boot last night of Sledge’s weak grounder in the magical ninth. Give PMac some starts in left ! When Giles is back will it be Sledge who is moved ?
June 8, 2007 at 8:05 pm
Seems Germano is a bit off, but is managing to raise his K/9…
June 8, 2007 at 8:06 pm
“Looks like a pump, feels like a sneaker!” -Matty V.
Where does he come up with those?
June 8, 2007 at 8:09 pm
Is Batista supposed to be a good pitcher, or we just out to make him look like a Cy Young winner, as usual?
June 8, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Thanks Geoff, yeah they were talking about this year.
It just seemed weird they were throwing something like that out there. Then again Neihaus is getting up there, great broadcaster but man time to hang up the headphones soon. heh…
June 8, 2007 at 8:15 pm
I like Bard’s bat, but my mother-in-law throws better. She is 75!
June 8, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Germano’s pitches (via Gameday) appear to be way off the plate - it’s not like he’s just missing….
June 8, 2007 at 8:19 pm
35 - Honestly he sucks, but he’s better than Weaver if that helps.
June 8, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Mariners get the two-out RBI…
Germano continues to miss way outside….
June 8, 2007 at 8:20 pm
#36: Gotcha. He also threw 100 in his final start at Triple-A this year.
#38: I haven’t looked at Gameday, but that certainly matches what I’m seeing on TV. This is not the efficient, precise Germano that we’ve seen.
June 8, 2007 at 8:21 pm
39 - Weaver’s suckiness gives little consolation to Padre fans after game 2 of the NLDS.
And another two-out RBI for the Mariners. Go get him Bud.
June 8, 2007 at 8:21 pm
#2: Sorry, stergios; missed your questions earlier. I think both of those guys might be useful big-league bench players but most likely not starters.
#6: You called it, BZ.
June 8, 2007 at 8:22 pm
OK, that was not a good thing. Is this what last night’s game looked like? (Re: #3, I didn’t see it.).
June 8, 2007 at 8:23 pm
42- The way Weaver’s been pitching and his supposed arm struggles, oh and refusing to go to on a Rehab assignment. He hasn’t exactly endeared himself to M’s fans or anyone for that matter. I still can’t believe that the M’s payed 8mil for a #5 starter.
Absurd.
June 8, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Did someone forget to charge the bullpen cell-phone? What the heck was Germano doing pitching to the last three hitters?
June 8, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Replaying that inning in Gameday, Germano’s release point was all over the place (as were his pitches).
June 8, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Way to go Khalil. Nice double to the left corner. The boy didn’t slow down.
June 8, 2007 at 8:29 pm
The silent L dread is beginning to fill Petco…
June 8, 2007 at 8:31 pm
Happy to be wrong, I guess…
June 8, 2007 at 8:31 pm
P-Mac!!!
Wasn’t this how the 9th got reved up last night?
June 8, 2007 at 8:32 pm
NICE!
June 8, 2007 at 8:33 pm
Looks like de’ jevu’ all over again. Rally caps!!! Where’s LynchMob?
June 8, 2007 at 8:34 pm
more good stuff from the bottom of the order
June 8, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Got tix for tommorow’s double header? We do, thanks to Geoff.
June 8, 2007 at 8:37 pm
That ball took a real nasty hop to Branyan’s right. Otherwise he picks that up and a throw to first.
June 8, 2007 at 8:38 pm
#46
Just call Bud Black “Glass Joe” cuz he’s got a slow hook
June 8, 2007 at 8:43 pm
57: If the pitcher s due up in the bottom of the inning you can count on Black leaving him in at least 3 batters too long.
June 8, 2007 at 8:43 pm
57: A slow hook is one thing. Tonight was more “I think I left the hook in my other pants…, where is that damn hook? Someone check in the clubhouse for the hook! Oh, nevermind.”
June 8, 2007 at 8:43 pm
After last night’s game, I’ve become a ‘Glass Half Full Dude.’ I’m not sure where ‘Glass Half Dude’ stands on this game so far. But, I’m sure they just made the glass into a hooka.
June 8, 2007 at 8:45 pm
60: So I should stop watching now and come back in about 90 minutes to see how they did? That worked last night…
June 8, 2007 at 8:49 pm
59: When your bullpen is one of your biggest assets, that really shouldn’t be the case.
June 8, 2007 at 8:50 pm
#61: I’ve got a Mariner VooDoo doll with needles protruding from it and I’m about to start bloodletting a rooster over some chicken bones.
Do what ya gotta do.
June 8, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Now that’s the Greene we’ve been spoiled with.
June 8, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Hopefully this is a good move. Try to get the mediocre high ERA soft-tosser out of the game. Hopefully the mariners have a guy as big as a truck with an ungodly fastball so the Padres finally have a chance…
June 8, 2007 at 8:57 pm
Oops, more Batista. my bad…
June 8, 2007 at 8:58 pm
Batista is pitching way over his head at this point.
June 8, 2007 at 9:07 pm
OK NOG, just relax and have a decent approach…
June 8, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Way to swing at first pitch, Marcus. Lady Luck is hanging out in SD this week, eh?
June 8, 2007 at 9:07 pm
Um….NOG’s up. Sexon misses and the Padres are on there way to another miracle comeback. More VooDoo!!!! I’m bloodletting a second rooster!
June 8, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Good start, now Sledge must walk…
June 8, 2007 at 9:10 pm
I’ll be happy right now with a base hit RBI for Kooooz.
June 8, 2007 at 9:11 pm
KOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TIED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 8, 2007 at 9:11 pm
KOOUZZZ!!!
Hey, Buddy, think you might want to find that hook faster?
June 8, 2007 at 9:11 pm
That second rooster paid off.
June 8, 2007 at 9:11 pm
No sooner I said Batista is pitching over his head, he starts to get lit up, and then the bring on the LOOGY..
June 8, 2007 at 9:12 pm
YES!!
June 8, 2007 at 9:14 pm
Slow hook or not, Bud did a nice job there, as long as Branyan heads to the outfield and Kouz goes to 3rd
June 8, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Sayonara Ichiro!
June 8, 2007 at 9:16 pm
75 Might as well go for the hat trick now.
June 8, 2007 at 9:19 pm
For those video-impaired, did Lopez’ single to left have anything to do with having a marginal 3rd basemanin left field at the moment?
June 8, 2007 at 9:24 pm
No way around it now, Blum will hit second in the 8th
June 8, 2007 at 9:30 pm
82: Correction, should read “will stand at the plate second in the 8th”
June 8, 2007 at 9:30 pm
81: Nope, it was a clean single
June 8, 2007 at 9:32 pm
84: Thanks, good to know…
June 8, 2007 at 9:43 pm
I don’t think I’ve ever seen the third base coach get thrown out of the game like that.
June 8, 2007 at 9:43 pm
Ok, here’s one thing that drives me nuts with Grover. Like the Padres, should be sending out the closer. Shut down, but in Grovers thinking it’s “It’s tied, it’s not a save situation so I’m going to send out White” It amazes me at times, that he’s employed.
June 8, 2007 at 9:45 pm
White, Green..their both colors, I get points for that right?
June 8, 2007 at 9:47 pm
86,87: I’m a little lost, what is this about?
June 8, 2007 at 9:47 pm
Beltre is shaping up to be the goat tonight. Popped up the bunt (why was he bunting anyway?), then he boots the Bocachica grounder.
June 8, 2007 at 9:48 pm
What the hell? Why was Boca trying to steal third?
Replay shows he was safe though…
June 8, 2007 at 9:48 pm
Wow…he was safe.
June 8, 2007 at 9:49 pm
I’m not so sure he was safe, at least clearly so. Stupid cubed.
June 8, 2007 at 9:50 pm
Dodgers just had another blown save (vs. Toronto, this time it was Saito)
June 8, 2007 at 9:51 pm
89: Seattle’s third base coach got thrown out of the game for arguing a called strike. He ran over and yelled at the umpire, who held up two fingers and seemed to say “That’s two times”.
June 8, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Is it me or do the umpires really have an itchy trigger finger with the ejections lately?
June 8, 2007 at 9:58 pm
BoSox Tuned the D-backs 10-3
June 8, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Peavy to pitch hit?
June 8, 2007 at 10:00 pm
87: This would definitely be the time Seattle should bring in their closer
June 8, 2007 at 10:00 pm
whoops, meant “pinch”
June 8, 2007 at 10:04 pm
Forgot there is no rule against using a catcher to pinch hit…
June 8, 2007 at 10:07 pm
99 Yes it would, as any normal thinking baseball person would know. If you and I can figure it out. Why can’t Grover? This is the same guy that would bring in extreme flyball pitcher.
Said pitcher blows it, and Grover goes on with “Well I brought Mateo in to the ground ball, but man (insert your favorite opposing player) crushed it.”
Well of course Mike, you don’t bring in a flyballer to get a ground out. Logic dictates you’re not going to get a groundball from said pitcher.
June 8, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Jeez, what’s with Cla’s gopheritis lately?
June 8, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Sweet DP. We need that run back + 1 !
June 8, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Cla seems to be really struggling right now against lefties.
June 8, 2007 at 10:11 pm
Funny, last year Linebrink was giving up bombs at a pretty alarming rate and Cla was dominant, leading to talk of possibly trading Linebrink for a bat.
The shoe’s on the other foot now, I guess.
June 8, 2007 at 10:13 pm
#103: I’m collecting contributions towards the cure for Gopheritis.
