I’ve given this at least 10 seconds of thought and I have a few half-baked observations based on extremely small sample sizes:
- The bullpen is working a lot harder away from Petco Park.
- Peavy is a stud no matter where he pitches.
- CY has done a surprisingly good job of keeping the ball in the park, both home and away.
- Boomer’s splits are Hitchcock ‘98 scary; what’s up with that road walk rate?
Just something to ponder while we enjoy the game…

June 6, 2007 at 6:42 pm
We get Silent L again tonight. KG out again.
June 6, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Glad to see Tony G. doing color with Matt V. again.
June 6, 2007 at 7:13 pm
Through the first four hitters that have come to the plate, this game has been a resounding success.
June 6, 2007 at 7:14 pm
First four pitches are balls. Padres need to go after this guy early. I don’t think he’ll stay in past the 4th.
June 6, 2007 at 7:15 pm
Randy Wolf this year has a habit of looking horrible in the first then really settling down. We need to score this inning.
June 6, 2007 at 7:16 pm
Two walks to start the game. Nice. Adrian needs to capitalize on this.
June 6, 2007 at 7:20 pm
After not getting a line drive in last night’s game until the 8th (according to Gameday) we get one on our first ball in play tonight. Too bad it was at someone.
June 6, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Why did all that seem like de jevu’ all over again.
June 6, 2007 at 7:26 pm
If you’re going to let someone reach base, Jeff Kent is the one to let on. At least he won’t steal second (probably).
June 6, 2007 at 7:28 pm
Nice DP by Maddux and the crew.
June 6, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Kouz with a good first pitch bloop to left.
June 6, 2007 at 7:31 pm
And the bats are swinging with the Girlie Mouth double.
June 6, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Uh oh. We need Blum and Maddux to bring in a runner from third with less than two outs. I bet Maddux does it, but not Blum.
June 6, 2007 at 7:32 pm
One word: Blum.
June 6, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Whoa!!!! We’re on fire tonight! Even Blum is hitting.
June 6, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Blind squirrel, there is your nut.
June 6, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Silent L with a two run double? Wait, I’ve only had three beers. This can’t be happening.
June 6, 2007 at 7:33 pm
All right, new strategy. Every time Blum comes up I’m going to post something derogatory.
June 6, 2007 at 7:35 pm
#18: Me too!
June 6, 2007 at 7:40 pm
Maddux’s pitch economy is insane. I guess teams just figure hey, swinging away against Maddux is our best chance to win this game, since there’s no advantage to wearing him out and getting the bullpen in the game. Thus, 27 pitches to get through 3 innings.
June 6, 2007 at 7:41 pm
Maddux is in prime form tonight.
June 6, 2007 at 7:42 pm
Plus, Maddux has serious home-road splits.
June 6, 2007 at 7:45 pm
If they can continue to get these singles and doubles home, we’ll be in good shape.
June 6, 2007 at 7:48 pm
53 pitches in 2 1/2 innings. Re: #4 prediction.
June 6, 2007 at 7:48 pm
24: Sorry almost 3 innings complete.
June 6, 2007 at 7:49 pm
matty v just gave me an idea for a new term for clutch hits.
opportunity knocks.
corny? yes.
will it catch on? hm.
June 6, 2007 at 7:51 pm
Two words: Boca. chica.
June 6, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Too bad Bard didn’t score there. There’s no way Blum will bring him in with two outs.
June 6, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Girlie Mouth is hot tonight! And Silent L with a total of 4 RBIs in one game. Has to be a career record for him!
June 6, 2007 at 7:53 pm
29: 5 is his high.
June 6, 2007 at 7:54 pm
¡Blum esta en fuego!
June 6, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Geoff Blum comes up with another opportunity knock
June 6, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Not sure why but Blum becomes a decent hitter when he starts at shortstop.
June 6, 2007 at 7:55 pm
The only downside to Silent L’s hitting is that he’s cementing his role in Black’s mind as the number one pinch hitter.
Is it better to suffer with him leaving RISP now or know that we’ll now see him in every high leverage situation for the rest of the season, including the playoffs (anyone remember the DS game 1 vs. the Cardinals)?
June 6, 2007 at 7:57 pm
Thru 3 …
Pitches-strikes - R Wolf 67-43; G Maddux 27-20.
Ground balls-fly balls - R Wolf 2-3; G Maddux 5-4.
Batters faced - R Wolf 18; G Maddux 9.
… advantage: Padres. Nice job, guys!
June 6, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Wolf’s already thrown 3 times more pitches than Maddux.
June 6, 2007 at 8:02 pm
36 … 2.48x … but that’s a nit
June 6, 2007 at 8:04 pm
OT … hoping we can root for Cust without any more teeth gnashing … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270606111 … he gets the A’s on the board with a 2-run double …
June 6, 2007 at 8:05 pm
#37: Sheesh. I don’t sleep with a calculator under my pillow.
June 6, 2007 at 8:10 pm
Ump got the call right.
June 6, 2007 at 8:11 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - R Wolf 84-52; G Maddux 36-27.
Ground balls-fly balls - R Wolf 3-4; G Maddux 8-4.
Batters faced - R Wolf 21; G Maddux 12.
… now only 2.33x … boo-ya … but Maddux is struggling as I type …
June 6, 2007 at 8:13 pm
For those of you who didn’t see Boca’s catch, he got up and threw it so hard to home that he damn near did a no handed cartwheel. Basically flipped himself over sideways.
June 6, 2007 at 8:14 pm
39 … no, but the computer you’re typing on right now does!
Meanwhile, down on the farm … Headley with HR #11 … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_friaax_1 … and Hundley with HR #7 …
June 6, 2007 at 8:14 pm
Nice. No run scored on that.
June 6, 2007 at 8:15 pm
#43: I’m not that inclined. Too much else going on.
June 6, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Even though he gave up 2 hits and a run, it still only took Maddux 10 pitches to get through the inning.
June 6, 2007 at 8:17 pm
At Lake Elsinore, they put up a 6-spot to back Wade LeBlanc’s LIGHTS OUT pitching again tonight … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lesafa_1 … 2 H, 0 BB, 8 Ks in 7 IP … so far
June 6, 2007 at 8:18 pm
OT … Matt Morris vs Brandon Webb is a scoreless pitchers dual thru 6 tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270606129 … are they playing @ Petco?
June 6, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Great throw from Cruz, but…
Now, I live in Boston so I only get to watch about half the Padres’ home games, but this is at least the third time this season I’ve seen the ball get tangled up in the left field corner against the foul pole, turning doubles into triples. Does this happen as often as it seems to me? And if so, maybe the outfielders need to practice the angles the way the Red Sox do at Fenway (believe it or not, Manny does a great job of playing the wall).
June 6, 2007 at 8:19 pm
The hit by Abreu and subsequent result killed Gameday. It’s still stuck trying to figure out what exactly happened. Fortunately, I caught what happened on the radio.
June 6, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Headline over at padres.mlb.com right now is …
Blum a one-man wrecking crew vs. Dodgers
… oh no … we’re gonna pay for this for the rest of the season … where’s glass-half-dude when we need him to cheer us up?
June 6, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Again, for my video-less friends: 4SD sync’d up the runner coming into the plate with the tag at 3rd on a split screen. The result: The tag did in fact occur before the runner stepped on home plate.
June 6, 2007 at 8:22 pm
50 … ya, Yahoo is hung also … what did happen?
June 6, 2007 at 8:22 pm
You can’t expect the media to ignore a man with hair like Blummer
June 6, 2007 at 8:23 pm
52 … thanks, TD!
June 6, 2007 at 8:24 pm
Anytime LynchStat!
June 6, 2007 at 8:25 pm
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes - R Wolf 96-60; G Maddux 46-33.
Ground balls-fly balls - R Wolf 4-4; G Maddux 8-6.
Batters faced - R Wolf 25; G Maddux 17.
… I have no idea what happen’d in the bottom of the 5th … it didn’t last long enough for Yahoo or GameDay to recover …
June 6, 2007 at 8:26 pm
Kouz and Cameron got hits, Cameron got caught stealing third, Girly Mouth struck out. Bard grounded out to start the inning.
June 6, 2007 at 8:26 pm
No one whining about this …
M. Cameron caught stealing, catcher to third
… looks like a mega-ouch to me! It prevented B(l)um from getting another RISPy AB!
June 6, 2007 at 8:27 pm
Adrian backhanded that bouncing carpet burner for out #2.
June 6, 2007 at 8:29 pm
Adrian again. That kid is gonna find a Rawlings Gold Glove on his trophy shelf sometime soon in his young career.
June 6, 2007 at 8:29 pm
After Geoff Blum makes an out to start this inning, do we pinch hit for Maddux?
June 6, 2007 at 8:29 pm
The Dodgers did a better job of making Greg throw - 12 pitches to get three outs.
June 6, 2007 at 8:32 pm
OK, I figured out why Silent L has been trying to be so productive tonight…the draft starts tommorow. Hmmm. Job in jeapardy?
June 6, 2007 at 8:32 pm
On a night like this, I want to call Maddux … “Toro” … http://www.toro.com/ … ’cause he’s just mowin’ ‘em down!
After the Top of the 6th …
Pitches-strikes - R Wolf 96-60; G Maddux 58-42.
Ground balls-fly balls - R Wolf 4-4; G Maddux 10-7.
Batters faced - R Wolf 25; G Maddux 20.
… as the Seattle announcers say … My, Oh My!
June 6, 2007 at 8:37 pm
Greg just might finish this game. Damn, he is on.
June 6, 2007 at 8:39 pm
66: Shhh.
June 6, 2007 at 8:39 pm
He crushed that right over the center field wall. At least it was only a solo HR.
June 6, 2007 at 8:40 pm
No problem … just keep throwing strikes …
June 6, 2007 at 8:42 pm
First walk in 7 innings. Not bad.
June 6, 2007 at 8:43 pm
You know what is bad is the 0 strikeouts he has going with that, though.
June 6, 2007 at 8:43 pm
Bell is warming up. and Buddy made the move. Standing ovation for Maddux.
June 6, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Maddux lowered his ERA to 3.70. He may have raised his home ERA.
June 6, 2007 at 8:45 pm
#71: I kinda disagree with that. If our defense really sucked, yeah that would be bad. But, if you can get the batter to hit to your fielders and they produce, it’s a good thing.
June 6, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Yup, that deserves a standing-O …
71 pitches … 49 for strikes … 0 K’s … now that qualifies as “pitching to contact”!
June 6, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Heath Bell is so good, amazing that Meredith has an ERA around 4 and no one has even noticed
June 6, 2007 at 8:46 pm
That was a fine example. A 5-4-3 DP on a grounder to end the inning.
June 6, 2007 at 8:48 pm
Bell, influenced by Maddux, decides not to strike out the two guys he was going to face, but instead to save some pitches and induce the double play grounder.
June 6, 2007 at 8:48 pm
74 … the key word in what you said TD is “if” … studies have been done that show that that doesn’t happen predictably … ie. pitchers can not “get the better to hit to your fielders” … that’s the theory of BABIP = Batting Average on Balls In Play … which says that pitchers have no control over BABIP … so the more K’s they get (thus avoiding a BIP) the better …
June 6, 2007 at 8:50 pm
I appologize to you all who are watching the same 4SD telecast that I am for giving a somewhat play by play or explanation on some plays. I’m doing that for our video-less compadres. Thanks.
June 6, 2007 at 8:51 pm
DRAFT CHAT … the writer at Yahoo mocks the Padres to take Mike Main … which is fine by me … but I don’t think Main gets past LA @ #20 … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
June 6, 2007 at 8:52 pm
80 … I know I appreciate it, thanks … and usually I’m not alone out here in video-less-land …
June 6, 2007 at 8:55 pm
#79: In theory, I agree. However, you leave out BIG statistics in that equation. Each and every fielders percenteges on all plays made along with errors, etal. The BABIP is a bullshit stat.
June 6, 2007 at 8:56 pm
82: Yes, thanks from one more video-less Padre Fan. And B(l)um or not, it’s nice to get this kind of production from the bottom of the order from time to time…
June 6, 2007 at 8:58 pm
There’s a “community mock draft” going on over at Sickles site … http://www.minorleagueball.com.....021/0724#1 … Padres are up now @ #23 … go vote …
June 6, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Hey, anyone else want to see Bell come back out? I did!
June 6, 2007 at 9:01 pm
#86 I did too.
June 6, 2007 at 9:01 pm
Kind of a pointless exercise over there when they have the Royals taking Wieters, whom according to everyone is way too expensive for them
June 6, 2007 at 9:02 pm
Kouz bobled that and threw it past NOG.
June 6, 2007 at 9:06 pm
I’m hoping we’ll see Trevor’s history making 500th save.
June 6, 2007 at 9:10 pm
Looks like they might be saving #500 for tomorrow night
June 6, 2007 at 9:11 pm
I stand corrected
June 6, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Trevor Time!
June 6, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Goddamit! I thought 4SD wasn’t going to cut to commercials when Trevor came out. WTF?
June 6, 2007 at 9:14 pm
OK, they came back as soon as they opened the gate for his entrance.
June 6, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Off the wall in left center that just missed going out for a double.
June 6, 2007 at 9:15 pm
Get it done Trevor!
(OT: Valverde just closed out the Giants… D-Backs 1-0)
June 6, 2007 at 9:16 pm
This could be a hard, “easy” save.
June 6, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Play goes 5-3
June 6, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Haven’t seen Moores at a game in a long time
June 6, 2007 at 9:17 pm
I feel “defensive indifference” coming on…
June 6, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Play goes 4-3 for the 2nd out.
June 6, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Fanned him twice.
June 6, 2007 at 9:18 pm
In the dirt, runner holds at 3rd.
June 6, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Re 101: wrong again…
June 6, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Got him looking for #500!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 6, 2007 at 9:19 pm
103: All change-ups, I assume?
June 6, 2007 at 9:19 pm
Nicely done
June 6, 2007 at 9:20 pm
HOW SWEET IT IS!
June 6, 2007 at 9:20 pm
