I’ve given this at least 10 seconds of thought and I have a few half-baked observations based on extremely small sample sizes:

  • The bullpen is working a lot harder away from Petco Park.
  • Peavy is a stud no matter where he pitches.
  • CY has done a surprisingly good job of keeping the ball in the park, both home and away.
  • Boomer’s splits are Hitchcock ‘98 scary; what’s up with that road walk rate?

Just something to ponder while we enjoy the game…

Through the first four hitters that have come to the plate, this game has been a resounding success.

First four pitches are balls. Padres need to go after this guy early. I don’t think he’ll stay in past the 4th.

Maddux’s pitch economy is insane. I guess teams just figure hey, swinging away against Maddux is our best chance to win this game, since there’s no advantage to wearing him out and getting the bullpen in the game. Thus, 27 pitches to get through 3 innings.

The only downside to Silent L’s hitting is that he’s cementing his role in Black’s mind as the number one pinch hitter.

Is it better to suffer with him leaving RISP now or know that we’ll now see him in every high leverage situation for the rest of the season, including the playoffs (anyone remember the DS game 1 vs. the Cardinals)?

    Great throw from Cruz, but…

Now, I live in Boston so I only get to watch about half the Padres’ home games, but this is at least the third time this season I’ve seen the ball get tangled up in the left field corner against the foul pole, turning doubles into triples. Does this happen as often as it seems to me? And if so, maybe the outfielders need to practice the angles the way the Red Sox do at Fenway (believe it or not, Manny does a great job of playing the wall).

74 … the key word in what you said TD is “if” … studies have been done that show that that doesn’t happen predictably … ie. pitchers can not “get the better to hit to your fielders” … that’s the theory of BABIP = Batting Average on Balls In Play … which says that pitchers have no control over BABIP … so the more K’s they get (thus avoiding a BIP) the better …

#100 John and Becky Moores are sitting on the field instead of in the owner’s suit for tonight’s game.

I just flipped to ESPN hoping that we might get a live look at the first ever save #500. No love.

They are now doing a live retrospect of his Padre career on the big screen.

Matty said that last night’s post game show got higher ratings than the news. Probably be even more so tonight.

    Dude,

I just got caught up. Seems I missed a very unusual game. Unusual in that Geoff Blum single handedly powered us to victory, though the “job in jeopardy” reference
    by Turbine.

Thanks for the splits, Geoff! Nice analysis.

#119: Very unusual in the fact that yes, Silent L came through uncharacteristacally of him. However, don’t give all the credit to him. Maddux pitched a superior outing with some really good DPs by our 5-4-3 plays and catches in the outfield.

What was the reason Bob Scanlon quit playing?

Just got back from the game. What a great night! The Padres did a nice job with the #500. The flare-colored flaming 500 rose out of the batter’s eye. A banner with Hoffman in his typical throwing motion was unfurled in right field, with the number 500 on it. A retrospect was shown on the screen. It was really nicely done. After the game, there were Pad Squad members with special “500″ stamps for your tickets.

Pads do go all out when a milestone is hit. I remember when Moores decided that we needed to build more of a history. Between Hoffy and Gwynn, we’re getting there.

Anyone else concerned about the crowd of 31,541 at Petco Park? Seems light to me … even for a Wednesday night … one potential spin: not many Dodger fans expecting to see anything they want to be a part of :-)

Hmmm, this note at the bottom of the AP game story …

Padres LHP David Wells bruised his left thumb when he was jammed in batting practice. He said he’ll be OK to make his scheduled start Saturday night against the Seattle Mariners.

… something to watch for on Saturday … I hate a hand bruise …

    #38: They’ve got Cust, but we’ve got Bocachica. :-)

#51: I cannot believe Blum came through for us twice in the same game from his weaker side.

#59: Oh, I was whining plenty.

#75: Absolutely; Maddux pitched a gem.

#86: I was good either way; I love our bullpen.

#107: I haven’t watched the replay yet, but I believe the final strike to Martin came on a fastball.

#129: First was a solid line drive to left; can’t remember the second.

#130: Not really. The Mighty Ducks were busy winning the Stanley Cup; gotta believe some Dodgers fans were watching that.

Also, I’ve posted some photos from tonight:

107: It was a fastball that Martin took for strike three. And it was probably a bit off of the plate. Martin’s got to know the situation there, the umpires going to give Trevor the corners when he’s going for save #500.

  135. Posted June 6, 2007 at 11:59 pm | Permalink

#59: Okay, I’ve watched Cameron’s attempted steal of third on replay and the umpire missed the call. Umpire was behind the bag and saw the throw beat Cammy, but didn’t see Cammy’s hand touch before Abreu applied the tag.

#129: Just saw the other Kouz knock; it was another solid line drive to left.
