first pitch: 4:05 p.m. PT
television: none
matchup: Jake Peavy (7-1, 1.47 ERA) vs Matt Chico (3-4, 5.13 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
I should be more fired up about a Jake Peavy start, but with the game not being televised, it’s a little tough. Is this what it’s like to live out of market?
Also, I’m working on the May roundtable that will run on Monday. Those are my lame excuses and I’m sticking to them…

this seems like an odd game not to be televised
this is one of the few games i get to watch, living on the east coast… and a peavy start is just gravy.
This is OT … but sure seems worth repeating for any new folks that join the IGD … Didi posted this link earlier today … http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/cgi-bin/PrintStory.pl?document_id=2003726909&zsection_id=2003016528&slug=seam30&date=20070530 … and I *love* it … a great “Ode to Bo” …
From mlb.com’s Gameday, it looks like Bocachica is taking Robles’ spot on the roster. I might have preferred him taking Blum’s, but other than that it’s a good call. It looks like Sledge is starting against a lefty tonight, meaning Cruz is probably unavailable, so that could have influenced the decision to keep Sledge and McAnulty.
Why not start Bocachica against the lefty?
Bard has been suspended 3 games for bumping the umpire last night. He’s appealing, so he will play in the meantime. I like that Bard can appeal and time his suspension to the best time for the team, but it really undermines the disciplinary effect if he can just take his three games the next time he’s a little banged up.
I think Bard’s suspension had more to do with his full-speed rush towards the umpires rather than the contact itself. That was pretty intense to watch. Looking at it from the league’s point of view, the penalty seems very fair. He was also fined an ‘undisclosed’ amount.
5: It looks like he is starting in right. Sledge is in left. Bizarrely, Branyan’s getting a rare start, but Black waits until we’re facing a lefty to give it to him. The hitter with the lowest OBP, Greene, is hitting second, too. Weird lineup. Maybe gameday is messed up.
bleh looks like peavy needs to throw 8 innings of shut out ball tonight
Tonite is one of those few times I’m happy to be out of market. Hopefully, I’ll be able to watch Jake spin a beaut tonite.
I’m still baffled by the non-televised thing. Why this game and on a Friday night? I’m also a fan of 1090 AM, so I’ll quit bitching.
2 runs. That could be tough to overcome with this lineup.
12: We’re half way there. Way to go Josh.
Bard’s fired up. It there’s one thing Shakespeare knows about it, it’s revenge!
14: Yes, better that than a comedy of errors.
Bocacheca fits in nicely with a foul pop out.
Actually, in all fairness, thats a huge foul territory. And it was well worth watching Dimitri Young frantically sprint over there.
Hey, can anybody help me here? I can’t figure out what the current 25-man roster is – from the looks of things the Padres added both Bocachica and Hensley to the roster today, so who’s gone? Thanks.
Hensley has gone to Portland; Robles was sent there to clear space for Bocachica.
Thanks. The transaction report I read made it seem as though Clay was with the big-league team. Shame about Robles. I thought he might be a better option than Blum, but doesn’t appear to be able to play short.
Jake is really struggling tonite. Definitely not what we’re used to seeing.

Must be the national media attention this week, better to keep him our secret
Joining late … for your between-innings entertainment, what are you thoughts on the A-Rod snafu? http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AoF_GRpoWEj4KKvmWbqXuqcRvLYF?slug=ap-yankees-rodriguez&prov=ap&type=lgns … I can’t believe he’s catching flack for this! How is yelling “Hey” bush league but drilling a guy in the ribs with a fastball not? Howie Clark shoulda caught the ball … and since he didn’t, it’s pretty silly to get mad …
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 35-21; M Chico 39-22.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 3-1; M Chico 2-3.
Batters faced – J Peavy 10; M Chico 9.
Jake’s throwing a lot of balls tonite, pretty surprising.
Also, for your Draft and/or Mock Draft enthusiasts … here’s a link that has a very quick/brief review of both the Mock Draft and the Real Draft … http://minorleagueball.com/story/2006/6/18/161121/895 … interesting to look back …
This is Jake’s 2nd consecutive start on “only” 4 days rest … is that a factor?
Yeargh, national attention month is killing Jake.
The Nats took the Dogers apart last night and now us. WTF? This is one of the worst clubs in MLB.
Anybody up in the pen? … jk … but barely … it is on my mind …
Part of the problem is the Nats keep getting hits on grounders. Peavy’s getting pretty unlucky. He’s got 4 K’s, only one walk, and is getting quite a few ground balls (from what I can tell from the radio broadcast and gameday).
Bucs up 2-1 on Dogs …
Nationals are 7-11 on balls in play.
31: That’s somewhat encouraging.
Their four singles have all been on ground balls, and their only two line drives were their doubles.
34: Excuse me, their 5 singles have all been on ground balls.
Isn’t it about time for Russel to run into one?
Rally Cap Time!
What the hell was Bard thinking?
Oops, Dogs go up 4-2 in top of 4th …
Damnit Padres, stupid play. C’mon guys, its the freaking Nationals!
38 … did you see it? Tell us what happened?
38: That Sledge is 0-18 against lefties this year.
42: Make that 0-19…
God damn, this is embarassing.
Sledge now 0-for-19 against LHP this year.
The Padres have been ridiculously unlucky thus far (and Bard’s not helping with his stupidity). They have 8 (!) line drives in four innings, but only 5 hits, while the Nats have 2 and 7, with 5 hits on ground balls.
On another note, USD’s first game in the NCAA Regionals will be televised on Channel 4 tonight at 8 p.m. PT.
OT … Hey, Didi … you’re T1 man!
http://games.espn.go.com/flb/standings?leagueId=16639
Khalil makes another spinning strike. He didn’t jump though, so it wasn’t as awesome.
46 … thanks for the reminder … you can follow the games at …
http://www.ncaasports.com/baseball/mens/scoreboard/div1/div1/20070601
47 … never mind … you’ve already slip’d back into 2nd
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 68-44; M Chico 64-40.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 4-3; M Chico 2-6.
Batters faced – J Peavy 19; M Chico 17.
… HEY … didn’t last night teach any of us about “patience”?
46: GY, is that supposed to make me happy about this game not being televised? Because it doesn’t. But then again, you are the ‘glass half dude.’ LOL
-Rick
Khalil drills it to deep center with nothing to show for it.
DBacks won.
Damn, lets hope they can do what they did last nite tonite. They’re gonna need it.
54: What? It’s in the 5th, dbacks up 2-0.
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 80-52; M Chico 78-48.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 7-3; M Chico 2-8.
Batters faced – J Peavy 23; M Chico 20.
… here it comes, boyz, here it comes … a Chico implosion … c’mon!
56 … TD must *really* like Brandon Webb … me too … but I say we make ‘em finish the game … now in the 6th according to Yahoo …
Bucs still makin’ a game of it … now 5-4 Dogs in top of 6th …
Wow, surprised that Adrian could make that.
56/58: My bad. I misheard something on 1090 AM. Sorry to put you guys into a coronary.
Bard’s having a nice nite thus far.
With this game not on T.V., I’ve got 2 PCs up and a Bazzilion windows open and trying to pay attention to Ted and Jerry at the same time.
And now a one run game w/Branyon up!
#60: He doesn’t always score from third on a double.
FYI-For any of you with COX digital cable, 1090 AM is broadcast on channel 960.
“Looks” like Branyan had a nice AB. Maybe the new guy can do something useful here.
66: Sounds like it too, listening to Ted.
Is Chico getting a visit to the mound? The game seems delay’d on the Yahoo ticker …
pitching change
We need to come up with a nickname for Bocachica (sp?), to long to type.
68 … ah, now I see Abreu relieving Chico … full speed ahead boyz, it’s beat-the-bully-time!
Maybe Bocachica just like watching Dmitri Young lumber after pop ups.
how about .058?
TIED ballgame!!!
About damn time we catch a break.
man im glad they put in a righty!
Jake can hit.
Crudge!
Young lumbering around is pretty damn funny
I would have advocated pinch hitting for Jake, but we don’t really have any better hitters on the bench, so might as well let him go another inning, maybe two if he can dispatch them quickly.
At least were back in it, c’mon boys.
66/67: I actually miss listening to Ted & Jerry while watching the game. However, ever since I got HDTV, it hasn’t been feasable. The HD lags real time by about 2-3 seconds and it’s just too weird to hear the play called before you see it.
I wonder if Ted and Jerry can actually tell when Jake has “good stuff”, or if they’re just going by how the Nationals have hit him.
82 … there is a device you can get to lag your radio … invented for just that reason!
OT … 2 former Padres are getting whup’d by Gi’nts tonight … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270601122

Bocachica’s nickname should be Mouth Girl until he gets a hit
Ha! Tony Batista is still in baseball?
84: Yeah, but when I got the Bose home theater sound system, I got rid of the stereo.
86: Why “Mouth Girl?”
Jake’s at 99 pitches. Do we leave him out for 1 more?
Thru 6 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 99-66; M Chico 98-59; W Abreu 9-7.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 9-3; M Chico 2-9; W Abreu 0-1.
Batters faced – J Peavy 27; M Chico 24; W Abreu 3.
… deeper into their pen we go …
#89
Literal translation from Spanish
92: LOL. I speak Spanish and didn’t even think of that! Actually, it would be ‘Girl Mouth.’ Everything is backwards in Spanish.
Man Khalil is still not looking good at the plate.
I think Rivera can get an inside fastball past Cameron … well .. at least I’d like to see him try
95 …
M. Cameron flied out to right
… means they musta stayed away … chickens!
90 … leave him in … with offday on Monday, he’ll have 5 days ’till his next start …
97: I agree.
Thru 7 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 99-66; M Chico 98-59; W Abreu 9-7; S Rivera 12-7.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 9-3; M Chico 2-9; W Abreu 0-1; S Rivera 2-1.
Batters faced – J Peavy 27; M Chico 24; W Abreu 3; S Rivera 4.
Jake’s good for about 120 pitches.
3 up, 3 down. Definately leave him in.
And after all that discussion of how Jake doesn’t have his good stuff, he ends with 7 k’s in 7 IP, one walk, and only two extra base hits allowed.
101: I dunno. We got a legion of bullpen arms to use.
Down on the Farm … Nick Hundley with HR #6 … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_06_01_arkaax_sanaax_1 … I saw him @ Peoria in 2006 … he’s a big kid … I’m hoping he can make it to the bigs …
99 … oops, this is thru 7 …
Pitches-strikes – J Peavy 112-75; M Chico 98-59; W Abreu 9-7; S Rivera 12-7.
Ground balls-fly balls – J Peavy 10-4; M Chico 2-9; W Abreu 0-1; S Rivera 2-1.
Batters faced – J Peavy 30; M Chico 24; W Abreu 3; S Rivera 4.
… nice IP by Jake … now, leave in him? Personally, I hope we PH for him … he’s due up 5th
D’backs now up 5-0 …
106 … OT … 2 notes from that D-backs / Mets game …
Ben Johnson is in the Mets starting lineup … looks like he got a callup a coupla days ago …
A guy older than me stole a base for the Mets … Julio Franco with his 2nd SB of the season … oh, to be young again!
Anyone think Bocachica was the “PTBNL” in the Cust trade? I know he didn’t show up that way, but what if Beane released him as a favor to KT, kinda like Theo Epstein releasing Lou Merloni a few years ago when we needed a utility guy…
Ft Wayne gettin’ a few hits, scoring a few runs, getting enough outs … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_06_01_souafx_ftwafx_1 … a solid game, so far, no interesting details …
- H. Bell relieved J. Peavy
- P. McAnulty in right field
… all right!
Someone should tell Dmitri Young hitting the ball on the ground is not a good strategy for someone of his bulk. Somehow it’s worked out today, though, with 3 ground ball singles for him.
WOW, I missed this …
http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070601&content_id=1999009&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd
The Padres announced before Friday’s game in Washington that Hensley was reinstated from the 15-day disabled listed and optioned to Triple-A Portland.
… he must have had an option remaining? Cool … I think he can use the work!
112 … and what I meant by “missed” is that, yes, I read #18 … it just didn’t sink in that that meant he was optioned to AAA (as opposed to you simply stating that he’s on rehab there) …
Hensley certainly needs to find his moxy again, and Portland is a much better place to do it than sitting in the bullpen like Cameron and Hampson. I wish him all the success because we will need a healthy effective Hensley sooner or later.
KK update …
Rookie third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff wasn’t in the lineup on Friday after fouling a pitch off his left instep in Thursday’s victory over the Pirates. He was walking through the clubhouse on Friday with a slight limp although he is not expected to miss more than a day.
Oh no, they took Bocachica out???
Hiraaaaaaaaaaaaaam!!!
Time for Padre hitters to start lifting some weights. Gotta get those warning track drives over the fence.
3 deep outs in the top of the 9th …
- T. Sledge lined out to deep left
- P. McAnulty fouled out to deep left
- M. Giles singled to right center
- K. Greene flied out to deep center
I just watched the video of Bard’s non-HR … available at mlb.com …

This game is getting exciting and I can’t SEE it!
Extra innings are better than a loss. We capitolized on it last night, let’s hope it’s de jevu’ all over again.
Robert Fick disproves the theory that the Padres can’t throw out anyone trying to steal.
Can someone described what happened to Fick? Yahoo says …
R. Fick caught stealing, pitcher to shortstop
???
Geoff, I just thought of the guy’s name. John Shoffiett.
124: Sorry that was OT.
Nice. 1 and 3 with 1 out.
Guess who’s on deck?
Damn, Silent L is up and A-Gone can’t run. Ack!
He’ll eff this up, I just know it.
See!
Tragic … double-tragic … my, oh, my …
Another great AB by Blum. I would rather see Bowen in there at this point, but we can’t waste our second catcher that way can we? If he gets hit here and pokes across the winning run, who cares if we have no catchers left on the bench?
That was depressingly predictable.
I guess Kouz must really be suffering if he can’t pinch hit.
That fiasco gets pinned on Branyan … and I’m sure he knows it …
133 … vs RHP was not really a spot for KK …
Who’s gonna pitch next?
OK, focus now … we gotta get this game won before the 14th because now Mr. 14th has been burned in the 10th … which isn’t necessarily all bad news, I s’pose …
Silent L is NOT, and I repeat NOT getting a Christmas card from me this year!
Oh, wow … our nemisis up here …
There’s the game. Damn!
138 … http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=nemesis
Meredith seems to have a bit of Maddux’s problem right now. Like Maddux it seems the scouting reports say go after the first pitch. The Claw needs to make an adjustment.
From the info on Gameday, 59% of the balls in play were on the ground, with 23% of them line drives and 18% fly balls. This suggests he should have given up about a .350 BABIP, with few extra base hits because he had such a strong ground ball tendency. Instead, the Nationals hit .476 on balls in play, although Jake did limit them to two extra base hits (doubles) as suggested by his high ground ball rate. He didn’t strike out quite as many batters as a percentage of batters faced, but it wasn’t horribly down. Looking at these numbers, it looks like Jake had a fine, typical outing.
Anthony, it would be really interesting if you could compare this outing to his previous one to see if there’s something noticeably different contributing to the high BABIP this start and the low one from last start. I don’t think RFK has advanced Gameday, though, so that probably ruin that possibility.
Yo! Mark Bellhorn and Manny Alexander are the All-Star ballot … yes, there’s a AAA All-Star ballot …
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070531&content_id=250798&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp
Go vote!
Seriously … at least go vote for JJ Furmaniak!
Here’s an idea …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270601105
… perhaps Detroit could use a relief pitcher … *YOW*!!!
You guys should get jobs as scouts.
Noted sabremetrician MGL has numbers for his defensive system for 2007 so far. Every Padre player checks in at average or above (when I skimmed through it it appeared that way at least), including Termel Sledge as one of the best defensive LFers in baseball. Hmm. Ridiculously small sample size, obviously, making it close to useless, but still fun to look at.
http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/uzr_2007_complete_list/#comments
That site also had rankings for 2003-2007, which are actually useful because of the large sample size. The system has OG has the second best defender in baseball over that time, behind Adam Everett. Khalil also looks good.
At Portland, Vince Sinisi with a coupla hits (including HR #9) and Stansberry with a coupla hits so far … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=milb&t=g_box&gid=2007_06_01_iowaaa_poraaa_1
Heads-up, y’all … Matt LeBlanc is doing well tonight for Lake Elsinore …

re: Storm … you can listen to the game on-line from a link off their home page … http://www.stormbaseball.com/Main.html
FYI, Bard has been suspended 3 games by MLB for his umpire run-in.
The story is here: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2890563
148 … you can read about LeBlanc’s outing here … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070602&content_id=251758&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp …and there’s a great pic of him … I love pictures of the high-leg-kick, the kid gets his knee above his shoulder!
46 … http://www.ncaasports.com/baseball/mens/recaps/d1_0601_550483/2007 … good news for Toreros is that there’s still a road to Omaha for them … the bad news is that it’s now a *long* road, out of the losers bracket …
#152: Yeah, that game sucked. The umpires cost USD an early run, and the announcers were terrible. One guy used “definitely” in every other sentence, and the other couldn’t figure out how to pronounce “Torero.”
The youngest player on the Beaver AAA Roster, Ray Chang, signed by the Padres at a tryout camp, is hitting .341 in 33 at bats (called up from Lake Elsinore a couple of weeks bacK). Hear a great interview of Chang on Beaver Radio Network – http://www.richburk.com/index/Interviews?PHPSESSID=3b153f4c65fae726d4a5bd7635691d0e
