IGD: Padres @ Nationals (1 Jun 07)

first pitch: 4:05 p.m. PT
television: none
matchup: Jake Peavy (7-1, 1.47 ERA) vs Matt Chico (3-4, 5.13 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com

I should be more fired up about a Jake Peavy start, but with the game not being televised, it’s a little tough. Is this what it’s like to live out of market?

Also, I’m working on the May roundtable that will run on Monday. Those are my lame excuses and I’m sticking to them…

From mlb.com’s Gameday, it looks like Bocachica is taking Robles’ spot on the roster. I might have preferred him taking Blum’s, but other than that it’s a good call. It looks like Sledge is starting against a lefty tonight, meaning Cruz is probably unavailable, so that could have influenced the decision to keep Sledge and McAnulty.

Why not start Bocachica against the lefty?

Bard has been suspended 3 games for bumping the umpire last night. He’s appealing, so he will play in the meantime. I like that Bard can appeal and time his suspension to the best time for the team, but it really undermines the disciplinary effect if he can just take his three games the next time he’s a little banged up.

I think Bard’s suspension had more to do with his full-speed rush towards the umpires rather than the contact itself. That was pretty intense to watch. Looking at it from the league’s point of view, the penalty seems very fair. He was also fined an ‘undisclosed’ amount.

5: It looks like he is starting in right. Sledge is in left. Bizarrely, Branyan’s getting a rare start, but Black waits until we’re facing a lefty to give it to him. The hitter with the lowest OBP, Greene, is hitting second, too. Weird lineup. Maybe gameday is messed up.

Bocacheca fits in nicely with a foul pop out.

Actually, in all fairness, thats a huge foul territory. And it was well worth watching Dimitri Young frantically sprint over there.

Hey, can anybody help me here? I can’t figure out what the current 25-man roster is – from the looks of things the Padres added both Bocachica and Hensley to the roster today, so who’s gone? Thanks.

Part of the problem is the Nats keep getting hits on grounders. Peavy’s getting pretty unlucky. He’s got 4 K’s, only one walk, and is getting quite a few ground balls (from what I can tell from the radio broadcast and gameday).

The Padres announced before Friday’s game in Washington that Hensley was reinstated from the 15-day disabled listed and optioned to Triple-A Portland.

… he must have had an option remaining? Cool … I think he can use the work!

112 … and what I meant by “missed” is that, yes, I read #18 … it just didn’t sink in that that meant he was optioned to AAA (as opposed to you simply stating that he’s on rehab there) …

Hensley certainly needs to find his moxy again, and Portland is a much better place to do it than sitting in the bullpen like Cameron and Hampson. I wish him all the success because we will need a healthy effective Hensley sooner or later.

    KK update …

Rookie third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff wasn’t in the lineup on Friday after fouling a pitch off his left instep in Thursday’s victory over the Pirates. He was walking through the clubhouse on Friday with a slight limp although he is not expected to miss more than a day.

Another great AB by Blum. I would rather see Bowen in there at this point, but we can’t waste our second catcher that way can we? If he gets hit here and pokes across the winning run, who cares if we have no catchers left on the bench?

Meredith seems to have a bit of Maddux’s problem right now. Like Maddux it seems the scouting reports say go after the first pitch. The Claw needs to make an adjustment.

From the info on Gameday, 59% of the balls in play were on the ground, with 23% of them line drives and 18% fly balls. This suggests he should have given up about a .350 BABIP, with few extra base hits because he had such a strong ground ball tendency. Instead, the Nationals hit .476 on balls in play, although Jake did limit them to two extra base hits (doubles) as suggested by his high ground ball rate. He didn’t strike out quite as many batters as a percentage of batters faced, but it wasn’t horribly down. Looking at these numbers, it looks like Jake had a fine, typical outing.

Anthony, it would be really interesting if you could compare this outing to his previous one to see if there’s something noticeably different contributing to the high BABIP this start and the low one from last start. I don’t think RFK has advanced Gameday, though, so that probably ruin that possibility.

Noted sabremetrician MGL has numbers for his defensive system for 2007 so far. Every Padre player checks in at average or above (when I skimmed through it it appeared that way at least), including Termel Sledge as one of the best defensive LFers in baseball. Hmm. Ridiculously small sample size, obviously, making it close to useless, but still fun to look at.

    http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/comments/uzr_2007_complete_list/#comments

That site also had rankings for 2003-2007, which are actually useful because of the large sample size. The system has OG has the second best defender in baseball over that time, behind Adam Everett. Khalil also looks good.

The youngest player on the Beaver AAA Roster, Ray Chang, signed by the Padres at a tryout camp, is hitting .341 in 33 at bats (called up from Lake Elsinore a couple of weeks bacK). Hear a great interview of Chang on Beaver Radio Network – http://www.richburk.com/index/Interviews?PHPSESSID=3b153f4c65fae726d4a5bd7635691d0e
