IGD: Padres @ Giants (26 Jun 07)
Tue, Jun 26, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 7:15 p.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | David Wells (3-5, 4.71) vs Barry Zito (6-8, 4.83) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
I’m starting to wonder if maybe Dex is onto something with his fire sale idea. I’ll take it a step further and recommend that the Padres position the PCL for an immediate transfer to the Triple-A level. I have no doubt that they would completely dominate the competition and bring a championship home to San Diego.
Meanwhile, back on this planet, the Padres and Giants hook up for the second of three at PhoneCo on Tuesday night. Those looking for reasons to be hopeful may wish to recall that David Wells‘ contract isn’t guaranteed through 2013:
| IP/GS | H/9 | HR/9 | BB/9 | K/9 | ERA+ | OPS vs LHB | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stats are through games of June 25, 2007, and are courtesy of Baseball-Reference. | |||||||
| Wells | 5.76 | 11.16 | 1.00 | 2.01 | 5.02 | 85 | 916 |
| Zito | 5.84 | 8.62 | 0.93 | 4.21 | 5.54 | 88 | 923 |
The question isn’t which pitcher has performed better, it’s how can they even be close?

June 26, 2007 at 6:30 pm
Zito has kind of gotten screwed by really poor defense this year.
June 26, 2007 at 6:34 pm
With 4.21 BB/9 against 5.54 K/9, Zito’s been doing a good job of screwing himself.
June 26, 2007 at 7:02 pm
Someone needs to remind Black that the end of the 5th is when we start getting up a reliever tonite. Not a second later.

Clay Hensley completely falling apart this season is a absolute shocker. He has to be hurt, there is no other way to describe his disaster of a season. If in the alternative, it’s all in his head, then he is someone that we don’t want anywhere near the ML roster any time soon.
June 26, 2007 at 7:15 pm
3 … GY, what is Wells’ stat line thru only the first 5 innings of each start? Is there web site that has that?
June 26, 2007 at 7:17 pm
This has got to be there weirdest lineup i’ve ever seen from the Padres this season
June 26, 2007 at 7:18 pm
At least Hensley had 9 k’s against only 1 bb. And I guess he settled down after those horrific first three innings.
June 26, 2007 at 7:20 pm
That article by “dex” is the biggest bunch of crap I’ve ever read. I’m amazed at so called Padres fans who continually spew nothing but negativity. Was he around during the actual “firesale” years when there was nothing to get excited about the Padres other than watching Tony Gwynn hit 4 or 5 times a night?
June 26, 2007 at 7:20 pm
Is anyone else having problems logging into MLB.TV tonite?
June 26, 2007 at 7:20 pm
The gun cannot be right tonight. It has Zito’s fastball in the high-70s.
#9: Good question, LM. Lemme dig around some…
June 26, 2007 at 7:21 pm
Hello? Is this thing on??
June 26, 2007 at 7:22 pm
Does anyone else have MLB.TV? I can’t even access the radio tonite.
June 26, 2007 at 7:23 pm
13: I just finished watching the Braves game on MLB TV and didn’t have a problem.
June 26, 2007 at 7:23 pm
Anything to keep Dave Roberts off the bases.
June 26, 2007 at 7:26 pm
#14: Here we go:
http://www.baseball-reference......;year=2007
Inn 1-5: 258 AB, .295/.331/.453
Inn 6+: 59 AB, .407/.462/.661
June 26, 2007 at 7:29 pm
16 … Phantom’s point (in #3) *EXACTLY*!!! Thanks, GY … can you email those figures to Bud, please?
June 26, 2007 at 7:31 pm
12 - um, i’ll take a shot at this…I read Dex’s piece and after a few WTFs, the sarcasm detector went off. I hope it was accurate…
June 26, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Uh, hold up on that email … Bud’s prolly busy right now … and it may not be necessary
June 26, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Damnit, I cannot access anything on MLB.TV. This seriously suck
And I see Wells has already given up a run. Good times.
June 26, 2007 at 7:33 pm
19 - wow, especially the .295 BA against. Here’s a question - do you bring back Hensley (assuming he gets it together) and plug him in for Wells, instead of Germano?
WTF is going on this inning? The Giants haven’t hit a ball hard yet.
June 26, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Woot. I called MLB.TV and apparently all of them are down. So many happy customers out there.
June 26, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Death by paper cuts. Mud and Matt are right; Adrian has to cover first and let NOG field that ball. How ironic that it happened with Ryan Klesko at bat.
June 26, 2007 at 7:35 pm
#21: I’m pretty sure you’re right.
June 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Nice tie Cammy!
June 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm
It is time for Wells to become the LOOGY he is destined to be (until he retires at age 75) and let someone NOT giving up 300 BAA have a crack at the 5th starter slot.
June 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm
14: ya one of Well’s curves was clocked at 99 haha
WAY TO GO CAM!
June 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm
THe wind is blowing out, indeed - Cameron smokes one to deep left-center. Tied.
June 26, 2007 at 7:37 pm
Mr. Cameron!
June 26, 2007 at 7:38 pm
12/21 … ouch, I missed #12 … ya … Mark O, you need to get your sarcasm detector checked … and Stu, yours needs to be tuned-up a bit as well (ie. made a bit more sensative, save a few WTFs) … the headline was a dead give-away … Dex is a very reasonable person and a very creative writer … just not as serious as most other Padre bloggers … it’s a style that attracts haiku in the comments, which makes the rest of glb tolerable
June 26, 2007 at 7:40 pm
29: 100% agree
June 26, 2007 at 7:41 pm
I wonder why we didn’t get to see this guy pitch for the Bosox in our just completed series …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270626112
June 26, 2007 at 7:41 pm
26: that ball was hit a step to adrians right, its his ball. Wells should had been covering
June 26, 2007 at 7:42 pm
33 - true that, Dex is good and the piece made me laugh - but I did have to read it a second time to figure out where he was going with it. I guess it’s a good sign that losing five of our last seven can inspire Pads fans to bitter protests, rather than apathetic shrugs. We’ve come a long way…
June 26, 2007 at 7:44 pm
#33: I sensed sarcasm throughout that whole article. It was too over the top to be taken seriously.
June 26, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Ah, much better inning from Boomer there.
June 26, 2007 at 7:47 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 36-26; B Zito 19-13.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 2-3; B Zito 3-3.
Batters faced - D Wells 10; B Zito 7.
… 18 x 5 = 90 … it’s gonna be close to get Boomer thru 5 …
June 26, 2007 at 7:49 pm
29, 34: Problem with Wells becoming a LOOGY is he can’t get lefties out. And we already have an awesome one in Royce Ring. How about we just let him be the bullpen coach and pay him all that money to kind of hang out with all the guys and pretend like he’s still contributing?
With that said, it appears he’s pitching much better than his line indicates thus far. I mean, giving up infield singles to Bonds and Klesko?
June 26, 2007 at 7:52 pm
At Eugene tonight …
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_eugasx_1
SS Lance Zawadzki hits a HR in his 1st pro AB … nice!
And Kellen Kulbacki gets on the board with a single …
HR-boy Pickett gets HBP’d following Zawad’s HR and (the other) KK’s single … welcome to the pro’s Justin
June 26, 2007 at 7:53 pm
41: Royce Ring is no LOOGY, as we saw vs the BoSox he gets lefties and righties out. Bullpen coach is a good idea.
June 26, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Dogs go up 5-3 in 4th as D-backs starter implodes …
June 26, 2007 at 7:55 pm
#40: One other thing about Wells. He gets torched once he reaches pitch #76:
2006: .426/.460/.574
2007: .385/.439/.673
Not a huge sample, but yikes…
June 26, 2007 at 7:55 pm
45: So yank him at pitch 75 haha
June 26, 2007 at 7:58 pm
25 pitches left
June 26, 2007 at 7:58 pm
I don’t know what you guys are talking about. The fire sale years were awesome.
June 26, 2007 at 7:59 pm
Ok, I have no tv, but how on earth was that not a double play against Bengie Molina? The guy is the slowest runner in the league (yes, slower than Adrian).
June 26, 2007 at 8:01 pm
49: Marcus saved it from being a run scoring single by making a great play to keep it on the infield. If anyone other than Bonds is on first, his flip to Khalil is not in time.
June 26, 2007 at 8:01 pm
#49: If you are talking about the play NOG made to KG at 2nd, he actually kept a run from scoring. Damn good play and effort on NOG’s part.
June 26, 2007 at 8:02 pm
Thru 3 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 50-35; B Zito 29-21.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 3-5; B Zito 4-4.
Batters faced - D Wells 15; B Zito 10.
… 5’s a bit more likely now …
June 26, 2007 at 8:02 pm
I’ve commented about this before, but whoever is picking the music for Ch 4 as they go to commercial must have a well-stocked iPod. Just tonight I’ve heard Paul Simon’s “Kodachrome” and Tupac’s “California Love”. Eclectic, I’d say.
June 26, 2007 at 8:03 pm
Wells at 51 pitch count
June 26, 2007 at 8:04 pm
50, 51: Ahh, thanks guys. These are the hazards of not being able to watch the game on tv.
June 26, 2007 at 8:09 pm
#55: NOG to a bad hop right in the sternum and was still able to flip it to KG. I bet it leaves a nice fat bruise.
June 26, 2007 at 8:12 pm
We gotta warm the pen in the 5th and put in a reliever in the 6th. Pitch this game smart Bud.
June 26, 2007 at 8:13 pm
OT … our old friend, Buddy, proves once again that he can get AAA guys out …
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270626115
June 26, 2007 at 8:16 pm
Does anybody know offhand Boomer’s normal fast ball speed?
June 26, 2007 at 8:17 pm
58: there are some damn good hitters on that Nat team
June 26, 2007 at 8:17 pm
58: Hey! Get off Buddy…lol He got us a win, and pitched a pretty darn good game really. Though he did get torched for hits early.
June 26, 2007 at 8:17 pm
59: 84-86
June 26, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Shit. How does Khalil not make that play.
June 26, 2007 at 8:18 pm
Whoaaaaa, that pitch says its time to get Wells out
June 26, 2007 at 8:19 pm
wow Durham’s fly ball was terrifying for a second there
June 26, 2007 at 8:19 pm
Thank God that error didn’t come back to bite us in the ass. That ball took a wierd hop and he had no chance at a play. I’m just grateful that it didn’t hurt us.
June 26, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Whew! That could have been really bad.
#59: Thanks. That’s what I though. Geoff is right, that gun is messed up.
#53: Did you just recognize the theme from “Barney Miller” going to commercial this last time?
June 26, 2007 at 8:21 pm
We are lucky to still be tied from what little I have seen of this game. Every time I stick my head in the room to check on the game, there are Giants on the base paths.
June 26, 2007 at 8:23 pm
67 - missed that one, gotta rewind the TiVo
June 26, 2007 at 8:23 pm
Thru 4 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 67-46; B Zito 43-31.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 4-6; B Zito 6-5.
Batters faced - D Wells 21; B Zito 14.
June 26, 2007 at 8:27 pm
60 … I don’t disagree … and I didn’t mean to dis (too bad) either Buddy or the Nats … but both deserve a bit o’ dis’, doncha think? Nat’s OPS = .314 + .367 = .681 … which is less than Padres!
June 26, 2007 at 8:27 pm
Wells gets 8 pitches this inning and someone should be warming right now
June 26, 2007 at 8:30 pm
72 … I hope you’re right, but I don’t believe for a second there’s any way that Bud pulls him until 2-3 runs are in … I’m hoping for a midlin’ inning that makes his struggles clear enough for Bud to get him out after 5 … but that’s not likely to happen either … he’s not due to bat again for a while … ug …
June 26, 2007 at 8:30 pm
Has anybody else noticed the Orange Julius girl sitting in the high dollar seats behind home plate? She’s had the rally cap thing going since the 1st inning.
June 26, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 76-53; B Zito 53-38.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 5-8; B Zito 6-8.
Batters faced - D Wells 24; B Zito 18.
… now would be *perfect* time to replace Wells … but we all know that *ain’t* gonna happen … HEADS UP!
June 26, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Okay, Boomer survived five. Time to bust into that deep bullpen of ours.
June 26, 2007 at 8:33 pm
NOG with a well-struck leadoff single up the middle
June 26, 2007 at 8:34 pm
and Bocachica pops up a bunt attempt on the next pitch for one out. meh.
June 26, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Whoa, Klesko looked a little pissed over that.
June 26, 2007 at 8:34 pm
This is a pathetic inning.
June 26, 2007 at 8:34 pm
STUPID Marcus
June 26, 2007 at 8:35 pm
and NOG gets picked off. shades of my little league days.
June 26, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Failed sac bunt attempt and picked off first on consecutive pitches. This offense is not good enough to overcome poor execution.
June 26, 2007 at 8:36 pm
Well, so much for that.
June 26, 2007 at 8:37 pm
It’s looking like the only thing keeping us out of a seven game losing streak is the Baseball God’s sense of irony…
June 26, 2007 at 8:39 pm
My Gamecenter says that Boomer is at 77 pitches, not 76…
June 26, 2007 at 8:39 pm
Ring up the ‘pen!
June 26, 2007 at 8:39 pm
And right on queue, Boomer walks the leadoff guy.
June 26, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Wow, that’s a great play by Kouz and NOG
June 26, 2007 at 8:40 pm
Walking Feliz on 4 pitches really takes a special effort.
June 26, 2007 at 8:42 pm
#89: Agreed. And we can thank Zito for not being able to lay down the bunt again.
June 26, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Please tell me someone is getting warm in the ‘pen.
June 26, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Yay! Boomer gets through the sixth unscathed. Now we can all look forward to some intelligent managing by Black, who realizes Wells is an old man and has thrown a lot of pitches for him, and is just thankful Wells got us this far only giving up a run, and will thus take Wells out now, right?
Ok, let’s just pray we get to his spot in the lineup this inning, forcing Black to pinch hit.
June 26, 2007 at 8:46 pm
Thru 6 …
Pitches-strikes - D Wells 86-59; B Zito 59-42.
Ground balls-fly balls - D Wells 6-9; B Zito 6-10.
Batters faced - D Wells 28; B Zito 21.
… OK, I’m willing to cut Bud some slack … due up in the 6th was the 7/8/9 hitters … the lead-off walk to Feliz did seem like a *major* red flag (as Bruce said in #90, that’s not a frequent event) … let’s just hope we get to Wells spot this inning … that’d be both good news offensively (he’s due up 6th) and pitching-wise …
June 26, 2007 at 8:47 pm
Shoot, I thought Cammy had another homer there.
June 26, 2007 at 8:48 pm
94: I wonder if your pitch count is correct, or mine… I have Boomer at 87…
June 26, 2007 at 8:48 pm
42 … Kulbacki is 2-for-2 so far tonight in Eugene …
June 26, 2007 at 8:49 pm
attaboy Khalil. I love this Padres team - winning with the long ball
June 26, 2007 at 8:49 pm
KG crushed it. Nice. Maybe I’ll get to bed on time tonight.
June 26, 2007 at 8:50 pm
GREENIE GOES DEEEP!!!!!
June 26, 2007 at 8:50 pm
caught a hanger… same hanger Cameron showed his Warning track power to earlier this inning.
June 26, 2007 at 8:50 pm
But Greene crushes one instead. No doubt this is another one of his hot streaks, and maybe the corresponding cold steak is short lived when it comes.
June 26, 2007 at 8:50 pm
oh, and get Meredith up
June 26, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Gen the ‘pen warming Buddy!
June 26, 2007 at 8:52 pm
C’mon Kouz, break out…
June 26, 2007 at 8:52 pm
Please Kouz, come through here. You not only could drive in the run, you could save some in the field by getting Wells out of there.
June 26, 2007 at 8:53 pm
I can’t believe that we’re not even at the All-Star Break yet and Khalil is only two jacks off his season best.
