IGD: Padres @ Devil Rays (13 Jun 07)

| sp: | Jake Peavy (7-1, 1.97) vs Edwin Jackson (0-7, 7.39) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
The good news is that despite losing four straight, the Padres still own a share of first place in the NL West. The better news is that Jake Peavy gets the start Wednesday evening.
A four-game slide doesn’t break a season any more than the preceding five-game winning streak made it. By my count, the Padres have 99 games remaining on their schedule. Single footsteps and what-not…
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Congrats on 6 years + a day, GY, whew, I wasn’t sure we’d make it past yesterday
June 13, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Rationale? Calm demeanor?
You can’t possibly be a baseball fan! Don’t you know that you have to have gratuitously visceral reactions to every game!??!
GY, your approach to the Padres is one of the reasons that I left the message board at Padres.com. I much prefer logical debates regarding the team I love rather than the ridiculous burtsts of emotional distress you saw there.
June 13, 2007 at 3:24 pm
Thanks, guys! Glad you’re enjoying it, Phantom. There are more important things in the world to be distressed about than the performance of any baseball team. We watch this sport to escape those things, no?
Not that it doesn’t drive us crazy sometimes.
June 13, 2007 at 3:27 pm
Yeah, can you imagine what the Mets fans are like now? Their lead in the NL East is cut down to 2 after going 2-9 in June. Let’s hope they win their third game this month against the Dodgers.
June 13, 2007 at 3:29 pm
Nice article:

June 13, 2007 at 3:34 pm
TW posted a link reminding me that Colt Morton got put on the minor league DL at the start of the season … I forget the details … prolly doesn’t matter … just checkin’ to see if anyone remembers?
The info at that link reminded me about Todd Greene who is also on DL … latest ’sighting’ is from a month-and-a-half-ago … http://www.nctimes.com/article....._26_07.txt … which didn’t sound good …
And LaForest is hitting low-.200s at AAA … albeit with some pop …
Sigh …
June 13, 2007 at 3:41 pm
All right, Geoff, you got me. How do single footsteps and what-not relate to the Padres and their 99 remaining games?
June 13, 2007 at 3:41 pm
RE 2 & 3:
Simply put, I always try to react more like I was playing the games than watching them. Meaning that I take that longer view still. The “marathon not a sprint” mindset. Although we all can react strongly, it’s also true that the great majority here maintain a fairly even keel on the big picture side.

#7: It’s an allusion to Lao-Tzu’s Tao Te Ching: “A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single footstep.”
I really need to get off this philosophy kick.
June 13, 2007 at 4:03 pm
Aha. Thanks. However, aren’t the Padres already 350 miles or so into their 1000 mile journey?
June 13, 2007 at 4:06 pm
#9: Sounds like you are waxing with it today. LOL
June 13, 2007 at 4:08 pm
Just heard good news. According to the Rays announcers, Jackson has not had consistent good outings all year. He gave up 4 earnies last start over 6 - 7 innings.
This bodes well for us, right? Because that last start would be considered good?
June 13, 2007 at 4:11 pm
OT … The rosters for the All-Star Futures Game will be announced Thursday, June 21, at 2 p.m. ET and will be unveiled live on the MLB All-Star Futures Selection Show on MLB.TV …
I’m interested to see if Headley makes this team … or LeBlanc …
June 13, 2007 at 4:11 pm
NOG gets on to start the game. That’s a way to get it going.
June 13, 2007 at 4:13 pm
Way to go NOG!
June 13, 2007 at 4:14 pm
Here’s hoping Adrian can rip a double to plate 2 here. Nice AB by Sledge (from what I can hear).
June 13, 2007 at 4:16 pm
Adrian in a hole quickly at 0-2. It seems like he’s done that a lot this year.
June 13, 2007 at 4:17 pm
12.
Or that just means that miraculously he turns into Cy Young against us. Weird how pitchers always have their best games against our bats huh?
June 13, 2007 at 4:17 pm
18: I don’t know what you’re implying, sir.
June 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
YEAH!!!! A-GONE!!!!!!!!!
June 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
A-GONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whoa! Crushed it.
June 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
Adrian dominated that at-bat.
June 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
19.
HAHAHAHA OR NOT!!!!!
June 13, 2007 at 4:18 pm
What a fantabulous AB by Adrian. Worked an 0-2 count for a 3 run job on a 3-2 pitch. Great work there Adrian. That’s a good way to start snapping the losing streak.
June 13, 2007 at 4:19 pm
12 … nice call, Phantom!
June 13, 2007 at 4:19 pm
That’ll do Adrian, that’ll do.
June 13, 2007 at 4:19 pm
26.
Nice Steve!
June 13, 2007 at 4:20 pm
Damn, I can’t wait to watch that AB once I get home to see how Adrian worked that.
The boys need to take some pitches. 23 pitches into the inning and Jackson only has 1 out.
June 13, 2007 at 4:21 pm
17: He’s also not afraid to be behind 0-2 and working the count to full a lot this season. Of course, El Hombre tattooed that one.
A good start to today’s game. Go Go Padres!
June 13, 2007 at 4:21 pm
Cammy flying down to 1st to beat out the throw. Nice.
June 13, 2007 at 4:21 pm
I’ll take a Kouz missile here to put Jake up by 5. I’d feel real good about a 5 run lead for Jacob.
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
Let’s go Kouz!
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
I called it!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!
Ahem,
I’ll take a 8 run lead for Jake…
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
It’s a Kouz Missile!!! Happy 6th Geoff!
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
31.
DOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice call!
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
YES!
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
31: Just keep calling it!
June 13, 2007 at 4:23 pm
KOUZ!!!!!!! Sheesh, what the hell did Buddy say to these guys after last night’s disaster?
June 13, 2007 at 4:24 pm
That’ll do Kouz, that’ll do.
June 13, 2007 at 4:24 pm
Jackson appears to be pitching with a lot of fear.
June 13, 2007 at 4:24 pm
35: Phantom called it first. Good one!
June 13, 2007 at 4:25 pm
40: This game is not going to cure his ailment.
June 13, 2007 at 4:25 pm
I don’t want to wear out my new prognostication abilities so early into the year, but I hope we quickly make this a laugher.
Jackson is likely gone.
June 13, 2007 at 4:26 pm
38.
He said… “Alright guys if we loose to Edwin Stinking Jackson I’m going to go OG around the clubhouse until we win!”
June 13, 2007 at 4:26 pm
Jackson is up to 40 pitches.
June 13, 2007 at 4:27 pm
40 pitches with only one out? Ouch!
June 13, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Come on, Khalil! Just a hit! No swinging outside the zone.
June 13, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Jeez. 41 pitches and 1 out. Wow.
June 13, 2007 at 4:27 pm
Wow Jackson’s stuff is so bad, that even Greene can lay off it
June 13, 2007 at 4:28 pm
No! Leave him in!
Nice job by Khalil to not chase the pitches. Of course, I’m going by radio, so I have no idea if they were ever close…
June 13, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Wow. Back to back walk! Sweet. Let’s get them in, boys!
June 13, 2007 at 4:28 pm
Wow. It’s rare that I feel bad for an opponent, but I feel bad for that kid. He was not ready to compete tonight.
June 13, 2007 at 4:29 pm
I gotta drive home now. Catch you kids in about 40 minutes.
June 13, 2007 at 4:29 pm
Poor guy… gettin’ booed be his own fans. We’d never do that Padres fans, would we?
June 13, 2007 at 4:30 pm
#52: To clarify, I’ll take it. I just wonder how much longer he’ll stay with the big club. And if you’re a pitcher that can’t make it in Tampa Bay…
June 13, 2007 at 4:31 pm
#52: I totally agree and really think he belongs down in the Minors.
June 13, 2007 at 4:33 pm
Alright, remember this post. I’m calling it now. Someone hits the cycle tonight.
June 13, 2007 at 4:33 pm
I feel bad for McAnulty … hitting 9th … gets screwed by not getting an AB off Jackson … at least they didn’t bring in a LHP … how’d his AB look?
June 13, 2007 at 4:34 pm
52: He was that bad, huh? Was he like Dewon Brazelton bad? Unfortunately, my desire for a Padres’ win overcome my sympathy for the kid. So, Padres, keep scoring runs, please. If not for us fans, for your own teammate Kevin Cameron and Justin Hampson. They need to pitch, lest their butts getting flatter and flatter from sitting so much.
June 13, 2007 at 4:35 pm
At least we haven’t seen the Designated Hoover so far.
June 13, 2007 at 4:36 pm
Dewon is a good comp for his performance tonight. Stuff looked the same to me.
June 13, 2007 at 4:38 pm
60: You just jinx it. Bad MOJO!
June 13, 2007 at 4:40 pm
Nice and quick for Jake. A 9-pitch first inning.
June 13, 2007 at 4:43 pm
Wow. El Hombre got fooled, striking out on 3 pitches. Was it that bad?
June 13, 2007 at 4:46 pm
57: A Padres player, right? In this game? Who do you like?
June 13, 2007 at 4:47 pm
61: That’s pretty bad. Both are product of the Devil Rays. Hmm….
June 13, 2007 at 4:47 pm
57 … otoh … we may have seen our last hit for the night … not that there’s anything wrong with that … whacha say glass-half-dude?
June 13, 2007 at 4:48 pm
Wrapping up. Going home.
GO PADRES!!
June 13, 2007 at 4:49 pm
D-backs vs Yanks @ 1-1 thru 2 …
June 13, 2007 at 4:51 pm
Thru 2 …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 19-14; E Jackson 42-23; J Hammel 20-13.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 3-1; E Jackson 0-0; J Hammel 0-3.
Batters faced - J Peavy 6; E Jackson 8; J Hammel 5.
… I gotta step out for a while … youse guyse hold down the fort!
June 13, 2007 at 4:56 pm
Kouz warming it up some more.
June 13, 2007 at 4:57 pm
57: Kouz just needs a triple and single now. (just a triple. ha-ha)
June 13, 2007 at 4:58 pm
Another nice drive to RCF by Kouz. I’m not impressed with what I’ve seen from Delmon defensively so far. If he starts in the right direction, he catches that.
June 13, 2007 at 4:59 pm
67 … otoh … KK might be your man!
June 13, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Khalil clears the bases. If this is how the team responds to a four-game losing streak, we’re in good shape.
June 13, 2007 at 5:00 pm
Does anyone else find it weird that Crawford is not in center?
June 13, 2007 at 5:00 pm
3 run double for Kahlil. I thought it was gone when it popped off the bat.
June 13, 2007 at 5:01 pm
That’s my boy! Way to go Khalil.
June 13, 2007 at 5:02 pm
58 … still not feelin’ good for McAnulty …
P. McAnulty popped out to shallow left
… sigh …
June 13, 2007 at 5:06 pm
I got my 8 run lead. I really hope they continue the offense since I just got home and haven’t seen anything yet
June 13, 2007 at 5:08 pm
Damn, I thought that was two more from Adrian.
June 13, 2007 at 5:16 pm
Nice break for Josh.
June 13, 2007 at 5:16 pm
That should be an out.
June 13, 2007 at 5:17 pm
I can’t believe they scored that as a base hit. It was in his glove and he dropped it! Oh, well. Better for Bard.
June 13, 2007 at 5:19 pm
84: There has been some some significantly bizarre scoring calls this series.
June 13, 2007 at 5:21 pm
#85: You think?
June 13, 2007 at 5:22 pm
So what’s the deal with Hamel? Is he a long reliever or a potential starter?
June 13, 2007 at 5:25 pm
87: He started pretty much exclusively at Durham and flamed out pretty badly in a starting gig in 2006 in Tampa Bay. They’re looking to have him compete for a spot in the rotation now because Jackson is so terrible.
The organization is still ostensibly pretty high on him.
June 13, 2007 at 5:29 pm
How are Jake’s pitches moving tonite? I know Anthony pointed out decreased movement on pitches last week so I’m hoping he’s got it back.
June 13, 2007 at 5:30 pm
88: Thanks for the information. I’m hoping several of the Padres hitters can get some confidence going at the dish tonite.
June 13, 2007 at 5:32 pm
Peavy doing his best Verlander impression!
June 13, 2007 at 5:32 pm
The Rays still have a couple zeroes on their line…
June 13, 2007 at 5:33 pm
I’m *thinking* it. But, mojo-wise I won’t say it. How’s that Didi?
June 13, 2007 at 5:34 pm
#92: Shhhh
June 13, 2007 at 5:34 pm
Damn, Khalil is retired for the first time tonite.
June 13, 2007 at 5:35 pm
I’ve seen a lot of rabid defense of P-Mac on here…anyone willing to admit that the experiment with him just isn’t going to work?
June 13, 2007 at 5:37 pm
96: Based on what, inconsistent starting opportunities and scant PH opportunities?
If anything, I’d say the Sledge experiment isn’t working. I’m more than willing to give PMac more regular playing time.
June 13, 2007 at 5:37 pm
Looks like the hitters like watching Jake pitch just as much as we do. I wonder if not having to hit is doing anything for Jake.
June 13, 2007 at 5:38 pm
#96: Not until he gets an extended shot.
June 13, 2007 at 5:39 pm
97: Based on the fact that his bat is slow and he doesn’t really have a defensive position.
I’m with you on Sledge, but I’m not convinced that P-Mac is that much better of an option. I know the Ducksnorts community loves him, but I find it mostly misplaced.
June 13, 2007 at 5:40 pm
So much for a no-no.
June 13, 2007 at 5:40 pm
F!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 13, 2007 at 5:40 pm
99: At the expense of whom? The only player he even comes close to outclassing at this point is Sledge.
It’s just weird that the organization would be more apt to keep (and give multiple shots to) a guy like McAnulty than one like George Kottaras (and yes, I know that getting Wells was key).
June 13, 2007 at 5:41 pm
#100: Can’t speak for anyone else, but I love P-Mac in a Mark Sweeney kind of way, not in starting gig kind of way. He should have value to a big-league club, though it may not be the Padres.
June 13, 2007 at 5:42 pm
Oh well, Jake can still throw a CG shut-out.
June 13, 2007 at 5:42 pm
#103: One of the relievers who never gets to pitch.
June 13, 2007 at 5:44 pm
