IGD: Padres @ Cubs (17 Jun 07)

Game #68
time: 11:20 a.m. PT
tv: 4SD
sp: Greg Maddux (5-3, 3.86) vs Rich Hill (5-4, 2.81)
pre: Padres.com, SI.com

I’m messing around with a Ducksnorts Glossary. People are jumping onboard all the time, and I thought it might be good to give ‘em an easy way to get up to speed. This is kind of just off the top of my head, so let me know what you think and if there’s anything we need to add.

Happy Father’s Day, and go Padres!

    A few suggestions for entries into the Ducksnorts glossary:

    OG = Orange Giles (Brian)
    NOG = Non-orange Giles (Marcus)
    Girly Mouth/Small Mouht = Bocachica
    Pepe Negro = Black
    Silent L = B(l)um
    DS = Ducksnorts
    PPR = Padres Prospect Report

    That’s all I got for now.

    What’s the general thoughts regarding another fracas for today’s game? Anyone think that something will happen? Would Maddux intentionally throw at Lee for over-reacting yesterday?

    Perhaps lost in yesterday’s fracas (best part of baseball brawls is getting to use words like melee and fracas) was the news that OG took a step forward in his rehab. He said he felt like he was turning the corner in his rehab, so hopefully we’ll have him back soon.

    I doubt Maddux would do anything dumb. The Cubs probably feel they were victimized twice (Peavy and Wells’ comments, Lee’s beaning) and Lou Piniella may order retaliation. I have no doubt that he was using the Padre comments to fire up his team before the game yesterday and will try to rally the troops today. I think there’s a very good chance they’ll throw at Adrian today.

    3: If they do throw at Adrian, does Maddux have an obligation to throw back?

    I can’t imagine that the Padres will instigate anything, but this year’s version of the Cubs seem to be a bit volatile, so who knows what will happen. I’ll also predict that Soriano’s behavior is going to cost his team at some point during the season.

    #5: I agree about this Cub’s team being too volitile this year. The fans have become more agressive as well. Back in the day when I was a Cub’s fan living in the mid-west, we were probably the most mellowist fans. Not sure what happened since.

    #54: I think so. There was no shortage of stupidity going around yesterday, but I like the way our guys responded. CY is one of the most mild-mannered players I’ve seen but he wasn’t going to back down from a pretty intimidating figure in Lee. And I love the way NOG went out to protect his pitcher. Brawls are a shame because they make everyone look like an idiot. That said, it’s good to see our guys stick together.

    74. Tradition only goes so far.. if a dude does what that blonde did, he gets punched.

    For those not watching TV, Bowen’s homer was being kept by the fan… until the crowd pressured him too much. A woman came up, argued with him and took his hat off his head and threw it.
    I like respecting tradition… but I think it is more important to respect our fellow man.

    111: Did you see the link in 2? It sounds like he’s getting pretty close. I’d like to see Hampson sent down when OG comes off the DL and retain Headley to be the right handed bench bat. I could see arguments that that would be bad for his development and that he should be sent down to get regular playing time, but if we just focus on this year I think that gives us the best roster possible. What will probably happen is Headley going back down.

    Lending credence to the argument that we haven’t really started firing on all cylinders is the Predicted OPS stat from the hardball times. It predicts what OPS for a player should be given his batted ball types and his walk, strikeout, and home run rates. Most of the Padres are underperforming their expected lines by a decent amount. Cruz, Adrian, and Bowen are the only guys with significant playing time overperforming.

    Today the Padres showed Soriano five times how to react to hitting a HR. I don’t like to be overly sensitive type but that was pretty bush and I think Soriano’s defense in the papers was pretty lame. “I’ve always done that,” to paraphrase. Doesn’t mean it’s suddenly become offensive to some players. Does anyone else do that – backpedal?

    I would like to narrow the pitching staff down to 11 as well.

    I think that the only way to justify keeping Headley at the Major league level is to, at the very least, platoon him at third. Otherwise, I think he deserves to be at the AA All-star game.

    How about trading Brocail for a prospect?

    112: I think that we’ve got to send Headley back down and take the long-term perspective. If he’s not going to play everyday, he’s not going to get better. If you’d like to talk about putting him in LF full time, that’s a conversation that I’d entertain.

    117: I’m pretty sure that Brocail isn’t going to be worth much of a prospect…

    By the way, did anyone see Prince Fielder hit the inside-the-park HR tonight? Wow, that big man can move.
