IGD: Padres @ Cubs (16 Jun 07)
Sat, Jun 16, 2007by Geoff Young
| time: | 10:05 a.m. PT |
| tv: | 4SD |
| sp: | Chris Young (6-3, 2.34) vs Carlos Zambrano (7-5, 4.89) |
| pre: | Padres.com, SI.com |
Don’t look now, but Chris Young is becoming more efficient with his pitches and working deeper into games. The home run rate is just an added bonus:
| Age | Yr | IP/GS | P/PA | P/IP | HR/9 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stats are through games of June 15, 2007, and are courtesy of Baseball-Reference. | |||||
| 26 | 05 | 5.31 | 4.08 | 17.33 | 1.04 |
| 27 | 06 | 5.78 | 4.11 | 16.86 | 1.41 |
| 28 | 07 | 6.21 | 3.96 | 16.34 | 0.33 |
Young still could work a little more efficiently, but this is a big improvement on last season. He’s getting one more out a start without exerting any extra effort. Is this the influence of Greg Maddux or just a young pitcher maturing? Doesn’t really matter, does it. Go Padres!

Jack Cust HR’d in a game the Portland Beavers played yesterday … find out how/why here … http://padres.scout.com/2/652113.html
The best part of this article is at the end … “dominant outings from Andrew Brown and Scott Cassidy” … that’s always nice to see!
June 16, 2007 at 8:31 am
Nice tease! Incidentally, Cust last homered on May 19 and is batting .190/.311/.254 in 74 PA since then.
June 16, 2007 at 9:05 am
2 … take the Hiram and run, baby, run!
June 16, 2007 at 9:47 am
This guy was just featured on the pre-game “extra” show:
http://www.baseballcardart.com/
Pretty cool…
June 16, 2007 at 9:53 am
Lovely. MLB is blacking out ALL of today’s day games.
June 16, 2007 at 9:57 am
4: I remember seeing a feature on that guy once before - really cool work, although a bit pricey for my budget for sure.
5: I’m getting the MLB.tv feed so far. Or at least the pre-game preview.
June 16, 2007 at 10:00 am
5: Apparently the inland empire is Cubs territory.
June 16, 2007 at 10:08 am
Wow, that’s quite the inexperienced outfield…
Is Cameron just getting a day off or is there an issue I haven’t heard about?
June 16, 2007 at 10:20 am
So glad I’m not working this weekend. I’ve been jonesing for baseball all week.
June 16, 2007 at 10:28 am
I don’t get WGN
This is the worst day of my life.
June 16, 2007 at 10:29 am
Zambrano looks sharp. He really jammed Headley on that 2-1 pitch.
June 16, 2007 at 10:36 am
So much for efficiency. Also, it really looked like Bowen should have caught the 1-2 pitch to Fontenot.
June 16, 2007 at 10:41 am
12: Agreed. On both accounts, but especially the latter. He was also a little slow in getting to the ball after the fact. But - no run scores so no harm done.
June 16, 2007 at 10:50 am
Here’s the Soriano article Quis referenced:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....adres.html
And some outstanding effort by Soriano on the wicked ground ball in front of the plate. Hard to reach first base when you just stand there.
June 16, 2007 at 10:52 am
Filthy breaking ball to get Pie. CY did not have that pitch last year.
June 16, 2007 at 11:02 am
Wow, haven’t seen a full-on brawl in a while.
June 16, 2007 at 11:03 am
CY popped Derrek Lee pretty good. NOG actually had to come in and tackle his own guy.
June 16, 2007 at 11:04 am
Was Zambrano taking his belt off? Chump move
June 16, 2007 at 11:06 am
Baseball players are so stupid. Why would CY want to hit Lee on a 1-2 count? (Speaking as someone who can’t actually see the video, though.)
June 16, 2007 at 11:07 am
Young looked like he was trying to explain himself to Lee and the guy starts throwing punches. Lee needs to pull his head out of his butt if he thinks that Young’s throwing at him with a 1-2 count. Just stupid
June 16, 2007 at 11:08 am
Why would CY get 86′d? Should have been Lee.
June 16, 2007 at 11:08 am
What worries me is that it did look like it was Peavy who was on Lee’s back…
June 16, 2007 at 11:09 am
CY has been tossed.
June 16, 2007 at 11:09 am
Seriously hating Derek Lee. Thanks for taking our pitcher out of the game.
June 16, 2007 at 11:10 am
Enter Justin Hampson. I’m still not convinced that CY’s pitch didn’t hit Lee’s bat.
June 16, 2007 at 11:10 am
Re 21: Young pushed Lee’s left arm off of him as Lee was about to throw a punch. Young then went throwing punches too. He’ll probably get a suspension for throwing punches.
Re 22: That was Jake on that got in there.
June 16, 2007 at 11:10 am
HAMPSON?????? Who is this? I thought it was just a joke when people said we had a 12-person bullpen.
Love that the Cubs announcers just mentioned that there are no hits in this game.
June 16, 2007 at 11:11 am
Lee fired the first shot; he should be gone.
June 16, 2007 at 11:11 am
And Lee has been tossed.
June 16, 2007 at 11:12 am
I’m calling bullshit on this.
#19: Exactly! Why would one of the best pitchers in the MLB who has never intentionally hit a batter go after Derick Lee when he’s already got him down 1-2 on the count? Lee should have been the only one tossed.
June 16, 2007 at 11:12 am
Hopefully Zambrano is dumb enough to retaliate next inning.
June 16, 2007 at 11:13 am
Cubs fans are throwing stuff onto the field. Pure class.
June 16, 2007 at 11:13 am
Zambrano was ready to rumble. I don’t think he will be able to resist.
June 16, 2007 at 11:14 am
Okay, so maybe we’ll play baseball now.
June 16, 2007 at 11:15 am
Peavy also tossed. Hilarious.
June 16, 2007 at 11:15 am
Peavy got tossed too.
June 16, 2007 at 11:16 am
Nice DP.
Geoff, remember I’m only a Cub’s fan when they are NOT playing the Padres.
June 16, 2007 at 11:19 am
Peavy was holding back Lee, so that’s why he got tossed. I guess you can only hold back your own teammates and not a hot head asshole that threw a suckerpunch at your starting pitcher.
June 16, 2007 at 11:20 am
Nice job by Hampson to restore order and render my latest poll utterly meaningless.
June 16, 2007 at 11:22 am
Nice hustle by Bochachica. I didn’t think he had a chance to get two.
June 16, 2007 at 11:23 am
Good hustle by Hiram.
June 16, 2007 at 11:24 am
Good to see the Cubs get mixed up in stupidity two weekends in a row and three of the last four.
As for their fans…for all the talk I hear about Cub fans and how great they are for the game, there’s no way in hell I’d buy that now.
It figures that I turned the thing on after the brawl had happened. Derrek Lee deserves to get the hell beaten out of him for charging without provocation.
June 16, 2007 at 11:25 am
Nice AB by Headley for his first big-league walk.
June 16, 2007 at 11:28 am
That pitch by CY clearly was just a fastball that got away. If he’s going to intentionally hit a guy he’s going to throw at his ribs or his butt, no one is crazy enough to throw at a guy’s face. Except maybe Pedro.
Even if it was unintentional I like it, it obviously got in their heads. Zambrano is looking like all the adrenaline got him amped up, he can’t find the strike zone.
What sucks is CY will probably get suspended for throwing a punch when he was just protecting himself.
June 16, 2007 at 11:28 am
Come on, Black, we have a 12 man pitching staff so you can pinch hit for Hampson here.
June 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
Hampson isn’t very fast
June 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
That’s terrible…..if we have 12 pitchers there is NO WAY Hampson should be hitting with the bases loaded.
June 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
You’re a big man Carlos, way to get that pitcher to ground into a double play. That’s why they pay you the big money!
June 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
Or let Hampson ground into a DP. Oh well, Blum probably would have done the same.
June 16, 2007 at 11:29 am
44: He’ll definitely get suspended. At most, he’ll miss one start. Pitchers’ suspensions are never bad.
Even still, he doesn’t deserve to pay just because Lee is a moron.
June 16, 2007 at 11:31 am
Black’s approach to his pitching staff has already hurt us this season, and letting Hampson hit was absolutely stupid. Win the game TODAY.
June 16, 2007 at 11:33 am
Damn Sledge, stick a fork in that one.
June 16, 2007 at 11:33 am
Sledge always makes things interesting in the outfield.
June 16, 2007 at 11:33 am
Yeah I have to agree, I am puzzled why Hampson was allowed to bat there. You have an off day on Monday, why not burn some guys? It’s what happens when your starter gets tossed. You have a chance to take a lead and you let a replaceable pitcher bat?
June 16, 2007 at 11:33 am
Quis can be annoying but he’s pretty good today… He’s not trying to be Matty V. And he was right on w/ Hamson not swinging.
June 16, 2007 at 11:35 am
Great play by Headley to save the run.
June 16, 2007 at 11:35 am
If Black wanted Hampson as the long guy he should have brought in Brocail or Cameron to replace Young, then pinch hit for him. I’ll cut him a little slack due to all the excitement but at the very least he should have told Hampson to not swing the bat.
June 16, 2007 at 11:36 am
Hiram’s defense has really been a pleasant surprise.
June 16, 2007 at 11:36 am
Man, beautiful throw by Bocachica. No soup for you!
June 16, 2007 at 11:36 am
OMG he got him!!
June 16, 2007 at 11:36 am
Nice!
June 16, 2007 at 11:37 am
And he bails Buddy out there too I might add.
June 16, 2007 at 11:37 am
Jeez, Sledge needs to back off there. Bocachica has a much better arm. I was hoping for a collision and more immaturity from the Cubs.
June 16, 2007 at 11:38 am
Wow, Cub fans are delusional.
I’m reading around some of the other boards, and the “how can you hit D Lee on purpose, he’s the class of the league” and the screams of CY intentionally hitting him are all over the place.
Hey Cub fans, there’s always next yea…wait…decad…no, not that either. Maybe next century.
June 16, 2007 at 11:38 am
#55: Always good to hear from Les Nessman
How you doin’ Peter…
June 16, 2007 at 11:38 am
I’m very happy that Bocachica decided to take charge and make that throw in place of Sledge. The play really wasn’t even that close.
Nice toss Boca!
June 16, 2007 at 11:39 am
Sledge always needs to back off. He is a frightening outfielder by any standard.
June 16, 2007 at 11:41 am
They could’ve painted the right side line with that hit. Nice double w/E.
June 16, 2007 at 11:43 am
geoff, check your e-mail
June 16, 2007 at 11:44 am
ugh
June 16, 2007 at 11:45 am
Unfortunately, Branyan just did a Silent L.
June 16, 2007 at 12:16 pm
A fitting end to the no-no. Let’s get some runs…
June 16, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Hey (tap tap), is this thing on?
June 16, 2007 at 12:16 pm
Eat it Zambrano.
June 16, 2007 at 12:17 pm
Okay, we’ve mastered the GIDP. Maybe try something different next time?
June 16, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Unfortunately it was also a fittingly end to the Padres rally…
June 16, 2007 at 12:18 pm
Ahead in the count, ground into DP.
We’re awesome right now.
June 16, 2007 at 12:18 pm
G, get my e-mail?
June 16, 2007 at 12:20 pm
Well at least we broke up the no-hitter. Cruz’s failure to get the bunt down there changed the inning.
June 16, 2007 at 12:22 pm
TW, Geoff told me you’re in the ATL area… I didn’t know that. I was hoping to meet you when we went to the Lake Elsinore game.
June 16, 2007 at 12:25 pm
Zambrano looked like a schmuck in that at bat
June 16, 2007 at 12:25 pm
I was going to post this earlier, but in one of the inning-beginning replays Channel 4 plays I could read Chris’ lips: “I wasn’t trying to hit…” And before he could finish the sentence, Lee right hand comes in.
June 16, 2007 at 12:30 pm
#78: Yep, thanks.
#80: Er, um, guilty as charged.
June 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Russ Branyan is very strong
June 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm
Home run Branyan. Very nice.
June 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm
He DOES NOT NEED to swing hard.
June 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm
We’ll take it, but it’d have been cooler half an hour ago.
June 16, 2007 at 12:31 pm
#84: You think? That was a good pitch.
June 16, 2007 at 12:32 pm
BRANYAN!!!!!!!!!!!
June 16, 2007 at 12:32 pm
The Padres now have two basehits. That seems to spell good things for our Padres.
June 16, 2007 at 12:38 pm
83: I warned about the black helicopters! How do we know PF isn’t a jack-booted thug out to get me!
82: I tried to shoot you an email when I saw you’d be in Atlanta earlier this year, but it either got caught in your spam filter or justifiably ignored. Tom Waits isn’t anything like my actual name. Geez, I sound like a cast member from Cats.
June 16, 2007 at 12:39 pm
I didn’t see anything due to MLB.tv blackout, but methinks if Lee got plunked on the wrist\hand, he’d be a tad sensitive about it given that he’s been injured there before.
I’m not being a Lee apologist by any means, but just sayin’.
Also, I had a sneaking suspicion Zambrano would be left in too long.
June 16, 2007 at 12:40 pm
Dang, sorry, I didn’t get it…
Thug, maybe…
Jack-booted, no…
June 16, 2007 at 12:41 pm
Muy satisfecho.
June 16, 2007 at 12:42 pm
AND A WIN!
That one feels GOOOOD.
Now let’s hope the repercussion with regards to suspensions isn’t to hard to take.
June 16, 2007 at 12:46 pm
93: A joke I had with GY when Ducksnorts was holding all my comments for moderation. I didn’t want the Internets collecting too much accurate information about me. He finally broke me and now I use a real email address. Now he’s willy-nilly handing out detailed information about the massive metropolitan area I live in.
95: The Commissioner’s Office could choose not to suspend Young. He didn’t deserve an ejection, and it might not have happened in a city that doesn’t pride itself on stupidity like Chicago. The umps didn’t want to deal with a shower of trash all game long.
June 16, 2007 at 12:49 pm
#96: Best not to mention the helicopters…
June 16, 2007 at 12:50 pm
Player of the game for me = Hampson. Yea, Branyan’s hit was key and the game winner, but to have Hampson come out of the pen and pitch those 3 1/3 (I think that was how long he pitched) solid shutout innings was HUGE. Especially since he’d only pitched 1 or so other innings this month.
(I’m placing all of the blame for the bases loaded GIDP on Pepe Negro, because I can.)
June 16, 2007 at 7:34 pm
For all the talk of the abysmal Padre offense, they actually have the 16th best EQA in baseball It’s better than every other NL West team, and it’s 7th in the NL. Branyan leads the team in EQA with .310, right ahead of Adrian’s .308. Germano actually leads the team with his .316 EQA in 10 PA.
These stats were before today’s game.
June 16, 2007 at 8:22 pm
Things still feel like they are little out of whack, right? Someone or another is in a slump, some reliever gets rocked a bit, Bud makes some head scratching moves…; yet here we are, the best record in the NL.
Maybe this is the way it will be all season (if our winning percentage held up, that would be great), but I keep waiting for all cylinders to kick. Maybe it is equally likely for all the wheels to spin off, so should hope for our continued good fortune, but it would be awesome to see the offense find a groove and have our pitching keep spinning its magic. That would be a very fun stretch to watch.
June 16, 2007 at 10:35 pm
Uh-oh … LeBlanc only goes 4?
http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_lesafa_1
June 17, 2007 at 3:47 am
No worries, they are keeping him for the Cal All-Star game:
http://www.nctimes.com/article....._16_07.txt
June 17, 2007 at 8:43 am
Whew, thanks!
June 17, 2007 at 9:31 am
#102: We were at the game, and that’s what I guessed, but thanks for confirming. Speaking of LeBlanc, dude has some filthy off-speed stuff.
