IGD: Padres vs Nationals (1 May 07)

Tue, May 1, 2007Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Chris Young (2-2, 4.33 ERA) vs Shawn Hill (2-2, 2.76 ERA)
preview: SI.com

With the usual small-sample caveats, it’s worth noting that Chris Young has had trouble putting batters away this year:

Chris Young after 1-2 Count, 2006 vs 2007
Year PA BA OBP SLG
Stats courtesy of Baseball-Reference.
2006 239 .164 .246 .352
2007 45 .366 .409 .610

You have to figure this will correct itself at some point. Still, that is ugly…

Funny to hear Nevin on th 1090 pregame show rag on Petco and I think he is absolutely right. Petco is bigger the the Q, yet its right on the water with the heavy air. Coupla blasts last night died, and I know that works both ways, but not on the bottom of the ninth.

  2. LynchMob Says:

Nice game going on at Ft. Wayne tonight … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_belafx_1 … Cedric (The Great) in the thick of things with a coupla hits.

  3. LynchMob Says:

And Chase Headley continues to be ON FIRE at San Antonio … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....x_friaax_1 … perhaps give him a few ABs on the big club? Naaa … but …

  4. LynchMob Says:

Nice mention of USD Toreros at BA … http://www.baseballamerica.com/blog/college/?p=92 … “they can dream of being a No. 1 seed for the NCAA regionals” … heady stuff!

  5. Marsh Says:

    Geoff - great stats!

  6. Phantom Says:

Nice quick inning for CY. I’m hoping he can make a night of it.

  7. Marsh Says:

1st inning reminded me of Chris Young from last year.. finished the 0-2 effectively and got to deep fly balls… also noticed some high fastballs freezing batters…

  8. Marsh Says:

damn, that was supposed to read “two deep fly balls”

  9. Phantom Says:

Crudge with another deep blast. Yearg, some of those have got to start falling.

  10. Marsh Says:

CY got squeezed on two pitches, then put one over the middle and got ripped.

  11. Marsh Says:

Kouz just needs some luck, damnit! Baseball Gods - cut the kid a break wouldya?!??

  12. LynchMob Says:

    After 2 …

    Pitches-strikes - S Hill 27-15; C Young 20-11.

    Ground balls-fly balls - S Hill 1-4; C Young 0-4.

    Batters faced - S Hill 7; C Young 7.

  13. Marsh Says:

    Hold the foul tip BARD!

  14. Phantom Says:

CY’s locked in, but the offense has got to pick him up.

  15. LynchMob Says:

    Thru 3 …

    Pitches-strikes - S Hill 38-22; C Young 36-20.

    Ground balls-fly balls - S Hill 3-4; C Young 1-5.

    Batters faced - S Hill 10; C Young 11.

  16. Marsh Says:

Question: Has anyone watched pregame batting practice at Petco? I’m curious to know if Brian Giles still has the power to knock one out??

  17. LynchMob Says:

Zoom, zoom, zoom … easy top o’ 4th … as far as I could tell …

  18. LynchMob Says:

Lead-off man on (OG with single) … heads-up … this constitutes a rally!

  19. Marsh Says:

    Boo-ya!

  20. Phantom Says:

    OMG! We scored!

  21. LynchMob Says:

    mijo!

  22. Phantom Says:

C’mon Greeney, deep fly ball for a run here.

  23. Marsh Says:

Wait?!? Did we just advance a runner with a ground ball to the right side?? Wait, this is the padres half of the inning, right?

  24. Phantom Says:

Damnit! We cannot do that with a man on!

This guy is owning Khalil tonite.

  25. Marsh Says:

Oh, yeah, striking out with a man on third when all we have to do is put the ball in play to somewhere other than the pitcher’s mound or 3rd base???? Yup, that’s our Padres!!! Phew, I was worried that I didn’t know them anymore…

  26. Marsh Says:

    ****!

  27. Phantom Says:

25: Agreed. Greneey was trying way too hard to get something to hit and chased two bad sliders.

  28. Phantom Says:

Whew. I was concerned with that ball of the bat to center. I don’t take anything Cameron does for granted anymore.

  29. Marsh Says:

    28: Seems reasonable to me.

  30. Marsh Says:

alright, Kouz needs just a little luck.. come on…. come on….

  31. LynchMob Says:

Is it bad luck to fall behind 0-2?

  32. Marsh Says:

****! good looking swing on that one… seriously though, I’ve stopped being angry at KK and now I’m simply pulling for him…

  33. Phantom Says:

Damnit Kearns, go back to Cincinatti!

  34. Marsh Says:

i have to think that it is enormously hard (relatively) to walk someone the size of CY - I mean, his strikezone must be HUGE…

  35. LynchMob Says:

    Thru 5 …

    Pitches-strikes - S Hill 73-40; C Young 59-36.

    Ground balls-fly balls - S Hill 6-5; C Young 1-9.

    Batters faced - S Hill 19; C Young 18.

… that is a nice pitch count by Young so far tonight!

  36. Phantom Says:

C’mon CY, lets go the distance!

  37. Marsh Says:

i guess we shouldn’t be surprised that that was belliard’s first stolen base….

  38. Phantom Says:

CY is rolling tonite. That inning took a little more out of him though. The offense really needs to step it up.

  39. Marsh Says:

it’s nice to see CY from last year back again!!!

  40. LynchMob Says:

    Thru 6 …

    Pitches-strikes - S Hill 86-48; C Young 77-47.

    Ground balls-fly balls - S Hill 8-5; C Young 2-10.

    Batters faced - S Hill 22; C Young 22.

  41. Anthony Says:

That clip of Bud Black talking about Chris Young looked like it was from his job interview when they asked him what he knew about the players.

  42. Phantom Says:

I’m really hoping that people in the West aren’t watching what Hill is doing to Khalil tonite, or else I see a very difficult future of sliders.

  43. LynchMob Says:

Whew, KK gets head with ball-one this time up …

  44. Anthony Says:

42: I think the league already knows it. We’ve seen him wave at a lot of sliders for strike three this year.

    Finally some luck for Kouz!

  45. LynchMob Says:

    KK … whew …

  46. Marsh Says:

    KOUZ! KOUZ!! KOUZ!!!

  47. Marsh Says:

Wow - awesome! I only wish that had gotten out, but hey, beggars can’t be choosers!

  48. Phantom Says:

44: His K rate is actually down quite a bit. Slider-man (White) is just owning him tonite.

Nice shot by Kouz, glad to see one of those finally avoided a glove.

  49. Daniel Says:

That was great timing by Kouz

  50. Marsh Says:

    A Squeeeeeeeze!!! AWESOME!

  51. Daniel Says:

I am going to rewatch that to hear Matty say “in de face”

  52. LynchMob Says:

Give Mr Robles an RBI …

  53. Phantom Says:

Just great to see us score some men on base. Great call by Buddy, totally got them off guard.

  54. LynchMob Says:

    Thru 7 …

    Pitches-strikes - S Hill 99-54; M Bowie 5-4; C Young 88-54.

    Ground balls-fly balls - S Hill 8-5; M Bowie 1-0; C Young 2-12.

    Batters faced - S Hill 25; M Bowie 2; C Young 25.

    … so, 1 more IP for Young, I s’pose …

  55. Marsh Says:

okay, definitely getting worried about CY now…

  56. Phantom Says:

CY is definitely laboring now, if he puts on another runner, its time to yank him.

  57. Marsh Says:

    re 55: um, nevermind.

  58. Marsh Says:

okay, I say give him a shot at the shutout. it’s good for his confidence… give him 20 pitches or 2 baserunners…

  59. LynchMob Says:

    OT … former Padres have 4 RsBI for the Gi’nts tonight … and they’re still losin’ … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=270501126 … 8-6 after 4.

  60. LynchMob Says:

    58 … I think his confidence is just fine … he’s at 106 pitches … that’s ‘nuf … bang the bell!

  61. Anthony Says:

58: I vote for Trevor time

  62. Marsh Says:

yeah, yeah, yeah… the bells are great.. but, I want a headline on ESPN!

  63. Anthony Says:

Padres scored 3 runs in Petco, that’s headline worthy

  64. Marsh Says:

    oh well….

  65. Marsh Says:

    63: LOL

  66. Phantom Says:

CY went 8 innings of 3-hit ball. That’s headline worthy.

  67. Marsh Says:

66: not on the east coast.. :)

  68. Anthony Says:

Gee I guess Trevor’s not washed up after all

  69. Phantom Says:

Would Trevor be as effective outside of Petco?

  70. LynchMob Says:

How about this headline … Trevor Hoffman establishes new MLB record for Saves in a career … we’ll, it’s true, ain’t it?

  71. Marsh Says:

I’m out fellas. Strangely small crowd tonight, but i had fun. Thanks..

  72. Phantom Says:

I hate to say it, but I’m pulling for the Dodgers to win tonite.

  73. LynchMob Says:

69 … he’s had 2 bad outings, one at home, one on the road … I don’t think “park factor” applies any more or less to Trevor than anyone else … if/when he’s off, he’s gonna get hammered in any park in the bigs …

  74. LynchMob Says:

    Germano with a gem for Portland tonight … http://web.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1 … 8 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 5 Ks … McAnulty played 3B :-)

  75. LynchMob Says:

Today’s AP game story says this …

It was another night when hits were hard to come by at spacious Petco Park.

… what does “spacious” have to do with “hits were hard to come by”? If anything, I’d think “spacious” would enhance the # of hits, right?

I’m not arguing that hits are not hard to come by … http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....eason=2007 … says Petco is 29th in MLB (Atlanta is 30th) … just that the reason isn’t “spacious”ness … I wonder if AP-guy thinks that walks are hard to come by due to “spacious”ness?

  76. Geoff Young Says:

Sounds like a fun one tonight. I just got back from Elsinore and am watching the replay now. I’m so glad to hear that Kouz came through with a big hit.
