I’m tired of looking at numbers. I have no angle for this one. Another win would be good…

I don’t know if it was the *best* game they played last night but it was definatley one of the most entertaining.

GY, here are some simple numbers. Most likely small sample size, but DW has some audacious Home/Road splits. If it is not sample, but accurate, he needs the big park and our outfield defense in a bad way:

    ERA
    Total: 5.40
    Home: 3.04
    Away: 8.84

Not just Wells, but our entire staff – Home ERA = 2.03; Road ERA = 4.06. Greg Maddux is equally helped by the home park HERA = 2.30; RERA = 6.00.

Jake Peavy OTOH has given up a single run on 9 hits in 27 innings for a microscopic 0.33 RERA. 9 road walks though – he stinks.

I’m going to try to carry over the Ichiro! vs Andruw thread from previous comment string …

re: Ichiro! vs Andruw … the bottom for both of them does scare me … it’s going to be risky for whatever teams signs them to their next contract … when Bonds first signed his mega-contract, it was clear to me that he was worth it … same for the last contract Vlad signed … but, you know what, “worth it” may not be the right term … because it’s not obvious that teams that carry contracts like that can win …

I’m a believer in “team depth” … and that seems hard to create in today’s free agent environment where every free agent seems to sign a contract that prohibits enough spending on the rest of the team for the team to be a winner … what a Catch-22 …

So then the focus becomes the draft … how do you find “the next stud”? And do that in the context of winning enough to keep fans happy, which means doing it with first-round pics in the 20+ range?

One approach is to do what it takes to get *a lot* of picks … hey, that’s what the Padres have done … we’ve got many extra picks this year … cool … let’s “spray and pray” … by that I mean that I hope they use a lot of the pics on “high upside” players … looking for “the first guy from this year’s draft to make an All-Star team” … hey, that sounds like an interesting metric: how many and how soon do players from each draft make an All-Star team? I sorta wish I had the patience to do that analysis … I’ll bet the data is avialable “on the web” …

Can’t the Pads just sign both Jones and Ichiro and move Giles to LF for his last season in San Diego.

I *like* that idea! Run the numbers, can it work? Offer them both 1 year contracts … for what? $20 million? So add $40 million to next year’s payroll … see if that gets us a WS … why not?

I think both Jones and Ichiro! are going to get more money than a team like the Padres (mid to low payroll) can get out of them. There’s just no way they’re going to be able to produce what they’re going to make in the final couple of years of their contracts, and a dead $18 million can kill our team.

The name I’m wishing for to fill our center field void next year is Lastings Milledge. It sounds like the Mets are really down on him for reasons other than his talent, and he could be had for much less than his talent would ordinarily command. Of course, this means he does come with some character issues (that I think are overstated, he’s not Elijah Dukes threatening to kill someone). And I also have no idea what it would take to acquire him or who I’d be willing to give up, and I recognize that there is no way this is going to happen.

What is with Piniella and stupid and bizarre pitching changes? Bringing in a LOOGY to pitch to Adrian when he’s OPS-ing 1.033 against lefties this year in 50 AB.

113: That sucks. It only costs about $40 to get to LA on the Amtrak. Maybe we could by Blum a ticket.

  115. Posted May 23, 2007 at 9:26 pm | Permalink

BTW, IMHO Cruz was feeling the presence of the porch. I think OG, who is very comfortable out there and has no fear of contact with walls, may have caught the ball off the bat of DeRosa.

And I’m not saying that to be critical of Cruz. He made a solid effort.

Here’s an out-of-the-box idea for our pitching “rotation” … it’s a 2+4-man rotation … it’s a 20-day rotation … it goes like this … Peavy and Young get their regular starts every 5th game … whilest the other 4 rotate thru the remaining 3 spots … over 20 games, it looks like this …

    1 Peavy
    2 Young
    3 Hensley
    4 Maddux
    5 Germano
    6 Peavy
    7 Young
    8 Wells
    9 Hensley
    10 Maddux
    11 Peavy
    12 Young
    13 Germano
    14 Wells
    15 Hensley
    16 Peavy
    17 Young
    18 Maddux
    19 Germano
    20 Wells

    Variations could include …

    – skipping one of the 4 if an off-day aligns with their start day

    – or just bumping the 4-man part

    – or only letting Wells start at Petco

If we did this, I think the 4 (Hensley, Maddux, Germano, and Wells) would all benefit from the extra rest …

Then I’d not feel so bad having a 12-man pitching staff …

117 … or how about this 8-game rotation … where Jake and Young go every 4th day … and the other 4 go every 8th day …

    1 Peavy
    2 Young
    3 Hensley
    4 Maddux
    5 Peavy
    6 Young
    7 Germano
    8 Wells

Or this 2+3 man rotation 12-game rotation …

    1 Peavy
    2 Young
    3 #3
    4 #4
    5 Peavy
    6 Young
    7 #5
    8 #3
    9 Peavy
    10 Young
    11 #4
    12 #5

… which is what the 2+4-man 8-game rotation would turn into if one of the 4 got hurt …

Update on OG’s health … http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070523&content_id=1981870&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd … Right fielder Brian Giles wasn’t in the starting lineup Wednesday and, based on the way that his right knee was feeling, he might not return anytime soon. Giles did not play for the third consecutive game due to a bone bruise in his knee.

It’s been a while since I’ve checked in on Corey Brock’s blog at mlb.com … I’m not liking that guy’s writing … but it’s who we’ve got there … anyway, he wrote a “quater report card” … and he actually said this …

Only recently has Geoff Blum, the Padres best pinch-hitter, started to find his swing.

… and man, did that set me off! Go read my rant … and chime in … I just don’t think we can/should let a comment like that stand unopposed …

Maroon is a Bugs Bunny term for a dope. Mild insult, and completely appropriate given the overall “quality” of Brock’s “writing”.
