IGD: Padres @ Pirates (31 May 07)

first pitch: 4:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Greg Maddux (4-3, 4.20 ERA) vs Shawn Chacon (1-0, 3.38 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com

Greg Maddux has been terrible over his last two starts:

9.1 21 10 10 3 1 6

On the other side, Shawn Chacon has been terrible over, um, a little longer than his last two starts. Among other things, Chacon had one of the most unbelievable seasons in recent memory for the Rockies in 2004, when he saved 35 games despite a 7.11 ERA and 1.942 WHIP.

Not to belittle anything that Trevor Hoffman has accomplished, but if a guy like Chacon can pick up 35 saves in a season, maybe it’s time to rethink how that stat works. Goose Gossage was a great reliever, and he never saved 35 games in a single season.

Anyway, here’s hoping Maddux and Chacon both revert to form this evening. Go Padres!

For those of you hoping for tonight’s game, it’s raining like crazy here in Pittsburgh . . . looks like at least 1 to 2 hour delay to start of game from what we are hearing.

Pads snagged Hiram Bocachica off waivers from the A’s today. Why not take a flyer on the guy if we’re just snagging him off the waiver wire? He is a right-handed outfielder… honestly, I don’t expect much out of him though…

Glad to provide the weather update, sad to have to sit it out here. By the way, Hiram is gonna join the Padres in DC tomorrow, with a corresponding move to be announced then.

Altho’ it’s a nasty little T-cell, good news is that it appears to be moving out of the area very shortly:

Bocachica isn’t a bad little pickup. A couple of +1000 OPS seasons in AAA and the versatility to play all of the OF spots and 3B or 2B in a pinch. This seems like a pretty good short term solution to our RH on the bench issue.

Both Adrian and Kouz have had trouble handling grounders in the first. Should be out of the inning; instead Maddux faces Bay. Wonder if the wet field is playing a part.

Sportsline is charging an earned run to Maddux — how?

    Here’s the sequence:
Jose A. Bautista: Strike looking, Ball, Bautista singled to center.
Chris Duffy: Ball, Duffy grounded out to first, Bautista to second.
Freddy Sanchez: Foul, Ball, Foul, Sanchez safe at first on 3rd baseman Kouzmanoff’s throwing error, Bautista to third.
Jason Bay: Strike looking, Foul, Bay hit sacrifice fly to left, Bautista scored.
Adam A. LaRoche: LaRoche singled to center, Sanchez to third.
Xavier Nady: Strike looking, Strike looking, Foul, Nady struck out looking.

Bautista advanced to 3rd on the error (would have been 2 outs) and scored on a sac fly (should have been 3 outs).

    Anybody? Thanks.

Looks like the humidity is just making the long fly ball drop like rocks. Kinda like the hitting in Petco.
Which begs the question why everyone bags on Petco? On page 32 of the 2K7 Ducksnorts Annual, GY points out that the HR pct. is better at Petco than the Q.

  59. Ben B.
    Posted May 31, 2007 at 7:08 pm | Permalink

Hmm, I have a double switch to make. We’re down by two runs going into the eighth inning, assuming my ace reliever holds the other team here. It’s pretty clear that my rookie third baseman is going to be the guy I switch out; he made the last out, and he’s having a tough day at the plate. Fortunately for me, third base is where my bench overflows. This replacement player will come up third next inning. I want him to have power, because there’s a decent chance he could have the opportunity to tie the game with a homer. I also want him to be able to get on base and start a rally if one hasn’t begun by the time he hits. Or, heck, if I’m really not feeling like analyzing stats and just want to go on the shiny numbers they put on the tv when he comes to the plate, I’ll pick the guy with the better batting average. Oh, and Pittsburgh’s go to guy for the eighth inning, probably the best pitcher in their bullpen, is right handed. Player number 1 is hitting .183/.275/.333. Player 2 is hitting .231/.355/.519. Player 1 is worse in every single category! Pssh, clearly player 2 is the guy I want to go with. But, wait, player 1 has pictures of me with KT’s wife. Plus, he got a hit in the 14th inning one time. All right, Silent L, you’re in.

    Hiram Bocachica-OF- Padres May. 31 – 5:53 pm et

Padres claimed outfielder Hiram Bocachica off waivers from the Athletics.

The Padres aren’t necessarily doing this with the intention of adding him to the major league roster. It’s possible he’ll replace Paul McAnulty, but it seems more likely that he’ll head to Triple-A Portland for now. The 31-year-old Bocachica was hitting .313/.444/.618 with nine homers and eight steals for Sacramento before being called up for two weeks. He was 1-for-17 with a homer while with the A’s.

The Padres like Bocachica’s versatility and the fact that he’s a career .274 hitter against left-handed pitching in his Major League career with the Dodgers, Tigers, Mariners and A’s.

This is what happens when they don’t have a clear demarcation at the top of the fence. The ground rules must say that a runner gets two bases in this situation.

OK, glass half full time (GY). We’re not down 2-0 and we are getting fired up in extra innings.

  148. Posted May 31, 2007 at 7:54 pm | Permalink

West handled the situation well, but Rapuano didn’t. Rapuano took off the mask and yelled “don’t you f###in’ come at me!” at the Padre dugout, which is bush league. Get back out there and do your job and quit agitating players.

That’s my main argument with a lot of umpires these days. If he had said that to me, I would have been on the field like Bard was.

By the way, the one thing Mud got wrong — Bard wasn’t tossed for contact with an umpire. He was gone before he ever got back on the field.

#156: Bard hit what appeared to be a homer to right. After Jim Tracy came out to complain, the umpires gathered together for a very long time and then decided that the ball hit the top railing but didn’t leave yard, putting Bard back on second base.

Bard went ballistic and got tossed. Bud Black came out to argue and also got tossed. Bowen ran for Bard and scored the go-ahead run. With Cruz nursing a bad back, we are out of position players.
