I Will Not Waste Scoring Opportunities

I’m supposed to talk everyone down from the ledge today. Hard to do when the team is playing like crap (with apologies to any crap that may be offended), but if we take a step back from the ledge, a larger picture emerges:

See? It’s not so bad. I mean, it is, but it isn’t; you know?

Now fire up some coffee and sit by the Internet; we’ve got a game to play. Go Padres!

  1. Can’t throw the exact same pitch to a major leaguer twice. Ugh, needed to hit the target on the outside.

  2. Yep, that was a good idea. It’s amazing the Braves didn’t get to Wells earlier. He had nothing today.

  3. That’s on Black for not taking Boomer out

  4. The team has been terrible to watch over the past week

  5. Shoulda pulled Boomer Bud! Unreal. Can’t say I have much faith in us coming up with a 4 runs in our last 9 outs, but keeping fingers crossed.

  6. So Maddux has to come out at 75 pitches but Boomer has to stay in with three baserunners. Brilliant.

    That’s asinine.

  7. Who intentionally walks Willie Harris? Do you think that was his first since Little League? On the bright side, as terrible as they are playing, they are still above .500!

  8. I guess we just don’t really want to win ballgames, eh? Braves get clutch hits when they need em, and we don’t.

There is no reason Boomer should be pitching the sixth though. None at all.

  9. 106: I was thinking the exact same thing. Worst part of it, though, is that Gameday shows the first two pitches to Kelly Johson were THE EXACT SAME – same speed, same spot, same type of pitch, etc… That simply cannot happen. I couldn’t even get away with that in Highschool…

  10. Black’s managerial inexperience is starting to rear its ugly head.

  11. Those runs are entirely on Black. He should have taken Wells out after the hit to right field. Yeah OG got a terrible jump but it was another hard hit ball.

His tendency to leave pitchers in too long has definitely cost the team some games. It’s not second guessing when everyone watching is screaming to take him out.

  12. Ooh look, Blum’s pinch-hitting.

    We’re gonna win now!

  13. Blumdog! Woof!

  14. 111: I couldn’t agree more. If you let someone like Jake work out of a jam, that’s one thing.

If you’re thinking Wells will work out of a jam in the sixth, you’re crazy.

  15. 7 starts into the season, and David Wells has a 6.32 ERA and .331 opp avg . . . sigh

  16. Hey OG, time to make up for the brain fart.

  17. Hey OG – time to prove you can still hit one out of the ball park….

  18. Wait – Crudge first, then OG. My bad.

  19. 111: Of course you can’t really pin full credit for a loss on one move. (Except for Castilla’s release last year, which single-handedly cost the team four games.)

    9 hits. 2 runs.

  20. Nice job there OG. Way to crush it.

  21. 119: True but when a team doesn’t score many runs every mistake is magnified. Leaving a starter in too long or a relief pitcher giving up two runs shouldn’t cost you the game every time but it seems that way with the Padres.

  22. About Wells being terrible, he’s our #5 starter so everyone in here seemed to be ok with it until Hensley got hurt

  23. It’s not surprising that the Pads aren’t scoring much, with Bard, 3B, Cameron and Greene being bad offensively lately….it doesn’t leave many hot bats in the lineup…..OG can’t carry an offense anymore

  24. 124: Name the last year that OG carried the Padres’ offense.

  25. Never said he carried the Padres offense

  26. If we lose, the spin will be 500 on the road.

  27. 124: I apologize, I misread your comment. Given the context of your comment (we’re note getting production from all of these people, then Giles can’t carry an offense), I assumed you were saying that Giles had been carrying the team.

  28. How can Leitner say that Wells pitched well?

  29. 127: I think we’ll still be a game above .500

  30. 127: 3-4 on the road trip.

Sounds like Wells shoulda been pulled, so I ain’t really defending Bud Black.

  31. Yes, 3-4. So you can’t really spin that. We just failed to hit. Today we are hitting a little better, but not great. Frustration City.

  32. Way to see some pitches, Mike, thanks.

  33. 129: I think Wells pitched well for 5 innings, for a 5th starter who once again didn’t have his best stuff. He does a decent job of limiting the damage until he runs out of gas after 5.

I think it’s clear that Wells is good for 5 innings, max. The only time he should go more is with a big lead, and even then he should be pulled as soon as he gives up a hard hit ball.

  34. 134: Agreed, he should not have thrown a single pitch in the sixth. He could have left with five strong innings. Instead, we’re down by 2 facing Atlanta’s closer, again.

  35. Wow, was that as “at the wall” as Gameday makes it look?

  36. Wow, Kouz with another terrific at-bat. He’s hit the ball very hard three times today.

  37. K. Kouzmanoff flied out to deep right … how deep?

  38. 136: yup.. a pretty good blast. about 387′

  39. #136: Yeah, he almost went yard.

  40. Ballgame. No disrespect to the Braves, who have a good team this year, but that was an embarrassing series.

  41. Sigh.

Black really hurt us today with the choice to leave Boomer in. It would be nice if our offense could click together, but I guess that’s asking too much.

    At least Jake’s pitching tomorrow.

  42. Did Kouz break any mirrors in the clubhouse in spring training? Does he own like 13 black cats? How can he keep getting so unlucky?

Ballgame. Ugh. File this whole series away under “Offense Lets Down Mostly Good Pitching” (that file is getting fairly thick).

  43. What more can you ask for from the Padres offense. 3 runs !

  44. 141: Every game on this road trip, we should have won.

At least the Dodgers lost today too, so we’re still only 2 back.

  45. Well, a positive today would be 11 hits. When has that happened? My question is, is this the team we get or will guys get better at the plate?

  46. 142: The decision to stay with Boomer was probably informed by Black’s hasty hook with Maddux the night before. Two aging 6 inning starters back-to-back is a bad idea.

Of course we’re happy if the Padres get a single extra hit Tuesday and Wednesday. So many people wanted Magadan gone.

  47. “So many people wanted Magadan gone.”

When do the calls for Merv’s head come? I’ve heard a certain great hitter isn’t getting the job done as a college coach. ;)

  48. Pads 3 for 22 with RISP in the series.

That looked like a playoff series against the Cardinals …. you pick the year.

  49. Cust hit yet another bomb. That’s three bombs in 15 AB’s –Padres have NO room for him ?
