IGD: Padres vs Rockies (8 Apr 07)
Sun, Apr 8, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 1:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (1-0, 0.00 ERA) vs Aaron Cook (0-0, 7.50 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Good to see the Padres get back on the winning track behind a strong effort from David Wells in his 2007 debut, more great bullpen work, and some timely hitting late in the game. This team went down fighting on Thursday and Friday, but it wasn’t quite enough. On Saturday night, it was. Play hard till the last out is recorded; you never know what will happen.
The Padres look to take the series on Sunday afternoon behind Jake Peavy. Happy Easter, everyone! You know what to do…

April 8, 2007 at 1:10 pm
Wow. Don’t see Cameron do that very often.
April 8, 2007 at 1:14 pm
yeah, usually if a ball is to be misjudged by a CF, then it’s a line drive… very rare that a pop up can be that badly misjudged… have to wonder if he was ready on the pitch…
April 8, 2007 at 1:20 pm
Would love to see some early runs for a change.
April 8, 2007 at 1:21 pm
nope
April 8, 2007 at 1:25 pm
Meanwhile, Tiger looks really off. Tourney is there for the taking, and he’s not.
Jake keeps giving up shots to CF…
April 8, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Nice job running that ball down by NOG
April 8, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Excuse me, OG
April 8, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Hey, look what Jake found. Happy Easter!
April 8, 2007 at 1:29 pm
Poll idea:
High socks?
Low socks?
April 8, 2007 at 1:30 pm
High socks. Old school baby
April 8, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Mlb.tv keeps showing angle of pitcher that reveals a lot of empty seats at Petco today… what gives? seems like the perfect day for a ballgame?????
April 8, 2007 at 1:32 pm
2B for shakespeare. Got him in the final round of my NL-only league if you can believe that
April 8, 2007 at 1:33 pm
11: I was just about to post that. I know it’s easter and everything but come on!
April 8, 2007 at 1:34 pm
scratch that last comment, looks like a good crowd.. not sure what is up with that section…
April 8, 2007 at 1:35 pm
bad, bad baserunning by Bard …
April 8, 2007 at 1:37 pm
15: How? He goes to 3rd he’s out by 20 feet.
April 8, 2007 at 1:37 pm
#11: It’s drizzling. You know how we are out here when there’s even a hint of rain.
April 8, 2007 at 1:37 pm
better baserunning by bard, or a better at bat by Cameron and KG picks up the sac fly there (okay, bard’s slow, so it would have been close)…. now is time for Kouz to break out of his funk!
April 8, 2007 at 1:37 pm
Must have been very tempting for Black to go back to Branyan against Cook.
April 8, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Looked like Cameron really tried to pull a 2-0 pitch that he could have easily taken the other way
April 8, 2007 at 1:38 pm
16: no chance. he shouldn’t have broken on the hit, but on the throw.. that’s pretty basic baseball in my book.
April 8, 2007 at 1:39 pm
18: Seriously, the only way Bard gets to 3rd on Cameron’s ground ball is if he’s running before Cameron swings. That’s a Little League mistake.
April 8, 2007 at 1:39 pm
of course, Bard is really, really slow… .
April 8, 2007 at 1:39 pm
where the heck was that pitch to Kouz? Are you kidding me? Hazing the rook I guess…
April 8, 2007 at 1:39 pm
That was incredibly disgusting.
You’ll get ‘em next time Kouz!!!
April 8, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Kouz rung up on a pitch that’s nowhere near the plate. That’s a shame…
April 8, 2007 at 1:41 pm
22: oh well, I deifnitely do not agree. Regardless, would be nice to see Cameron have a better approach.
April 8, 2007 at 1:41 pm
21: What game are you watching? He has to retreat to 2nd to not get the ball thrown behind him, and Helton’s a Gold Glover. That’s exactly why pitchers try to get RH hitters to pull the ball with a man on second.
April 8, 2007 at 1:41 pm
That’s how a slow start becomes a slump, pitches called for 3rd strikes like that
April 8, 2007 at 1:42 pm
A pitch not even terribly close gets Kouzmanoff rung up. Like he needs the aggravation.
April 8, 2007 at 1:43 pm
A better pitch by Peavy is a ball.
April 8, 2007 at 1:44 pm
I still think there should be more people there
April 8, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Nice 10 pitch inning
April 8, 2007 at 1:44 pm
Great k to end the inning - high cheese baby
April 8, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Meanwhile, Tiger loses another stroke, 3 back
April 8, 2007 at 1:47 pm
Is Sledge hurt? This is not Cruz’s strong side.
April 8, 2007 at 1:47 pm
28: Yeah, I think you’re right, particularly with Bard’s wheels.
April 8, 2007 at 1:53 pm
the rockies staff has been pretty impressive this series..
April 8, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Anyone else watching MLB.tv hear Sarah McLachlan’s “Hold On” playing quiety in the background during commercial breaks?
No? No one?
Just me?
Fine.
April 8, 2007 at 1:55 pm
tiger with a couple of incredible shots!
April 8, 2007 at 1:56 pm
39: turn your stereo off….
April 8, 2007 at 1:57 pm
I can’t believe that I’m getting the Padres broadcast on Directv again today…this is like a dream come true..
April 8, 2007 at 1:57 pm
how did Helton’s bat not break there?
April 8, 2007 at 2:00 pm
42: Are you saying in all previous years you never saw the Padres feed? Or is this your first year with DirecTV?
April 8, 2007 at 2:01 pm
The Padres feed was never on Directv. I had the package all last season and I had to always watch the opposing teams telecast. Now I get back to back games with channel 4… I feel like the friends episode where they have free porn…I don’t want to turn my tv off.
April 8, 2007 at 2:16 pm
It’s almost like I’m waiting till the 7th inning until the game really starts.
April 8, 2007 at 2:27 pm
I think our visions of a potent offense after games 1 and 2 in SF were misguided. I hate this crap. No way Aaron freaking Cook should be shutting us down this completey.
Amazing shot by Tiger on 13! Back in the game…
April 8, 2007 at 2:30 pm
After 5 full …
Pitches-strikes - A Cook 62-40; J Peavy 71-50.
Ground balls-fly balls - A Cook 9-4; J Peavy 6-6.
Batters faced - A Cook 16; J Peavy 19.
April 8, 2007 at 2:30 pm
Deja vu from last year when it seemed like every mediocre starter would come into Petco and shut us down.
April 8, 2007 at 2:32 pm
49: well said.
April 8, 2007 at 2:32 pm
After 6 full …
Pitches-strikes - A Cook 77-52; J Peavy 83-59.
Ground balls-fly balls - A Cook 9-5; J Peavy 7-8.
Batters faced - A Cook 20; J Peavy 22.
April 8, 2007 at 2:34 pm
Tiger eagle’s #13 … to get back to T2 … just 2 back of leader …
April 8, 2007 at 2:36 pm
Cla warming up…with our O, Jake needs to strand this guy at 2nd
April 8, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Nice play by Jake - he looks like a gold glover today
April 8, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Um, Jake, we neeeed this batter!
April 8, 2007 at 2:40 pm
Walking the pitcher to load the bases? Yuck.
April 8, 2007 at 2:40 pm
oh c’mon. you’ve got to give that to Jake!
April 8, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Last pitch could have been a strike, but you can’t go 3-2 on Cook, Jake.
April 8, 2007 at 2:41 pm
Ohdearlordthankyou
April 8, 2007 at 2:41 pm
alright, let’s get some runs so Jake can have a shot a the W!
April 8, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Zito, another ugly start for SF
April 8, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Still don’t understand Cruz being in there over Sledge, Branyan, or McAnulty. I guess Branyan has looked bad in the OF, but Cruz doesn’t hit righties well enough.
April 8, 2007 at 2:44 pm
61 … are you “Jonathan” from pdxbeavers.com? If so, what’s up (ie. down) with pdxbeavers.com?
April 8, 2007 at 2:44 pm
Steve: okay, I’m back with you again - there are a lot of seats open down the right field line
April 8, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Steve Finley, still The Adjuster.
April 8, 2007 at 2:45 pm
Carillo gettin’ knocked around in first 2 innings for Portland Beavers … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_freaaa_1
April 8, 2007 at 2:46 pm
Aaron Freaking Cook?!?!?!
I mean, come ON!!!
April 8, 2007 at 2:47 pm
Even when Cook gets a pitch up we’re beating it into the ground.
April 8, 2007 at 2:47 pm
No, I live in Oakland. That is why I use the “S”, to avoid confusion
April 8, 2007 at 2:49 pm
Thru 7 full …
Pitches-strikes - A Cook 82-55; J Peavy 103-67.
Ground balls-fly balls - A Cook 12-5; J Peavy 10-8.
Batters faced - A Cook 23; J Peavy 28.
April 8, 2007 at 2:55 pm
Here’s my new idea for how to play Padres baseball.
-1st inning… swing away like normal. If the pitcher isn’t on his game then we take advantage of that soon
-2nd inning on… if nothing happened in the 1st, just play foul ball baseball. On all 2 strike counts foul it off, foul it off, foul it off.
-Once the starting pitcher’s count gets around 100 start swinging away again.
-Get the starting pitcher out of there.
-Seal the deal against the relief pitchers.
April 8, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Time for some late game heroics again?
April 8, 2007 at 2:58 pm
Cheap but it still counts!
April 8, 2007 at 2:59 pm
See, that’s where lefties need to hit the ball.
April 8, 2007 at 2:59 pm
THANK GOD!!!!!
WE’RE PLAYING BASEBALL NOW!!!!
April 8, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuz!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He may look like a little leaguer w/ those stirrups, but we’re on the board!
April 8, 2007 at 2:59 pm
Oh, THAT’S why Cruz is in the game.
April 8, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Apparently Jeffrey Maier at the game today
April 8, 2007 at 3:00 pm
The stirrups are awesome, I hope he wears them all season.
Fan should have made that catch, that was a weak attempt.
April 8, 2007 at 3:00 pm
The Crudge platoon comes through again
April 8, 2007 at 3:00 pm
Wow!
April 8, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Crudge. Awesome.
April 8, 2007 at 3:02 pm
For a second there I thought Branyan went back to back…
April 8, 2007 at 3:02 pm
Man, I thought Branyan had that one. We’re finally getting some loft. Let’s make this a battle of the bullpens again.
April 8, 2007 at 3:02 pm
79: see also..
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn.....ortCat=mlb
April 8, 2007 at 3:04 pm
Hey Jose, 1970 called and want their stirrups back
April 8, 2007 at 3:04 pm
80: love that nickname. nicely done.
April 8, 2007 at 3:05 pm
Uhhh… I hope we’re not pushing our luck by putting Trevor in there.
April 8, 2007 at 3:05 pm
We got Cook up to 95 pitches after 8 innings …
Pitches-strikes - A Cook 95-64; J Peavy 103-67; C Meredith 10-7.
Ground balls-fly balls - A Cook 14-6; J Peavy 10-8; C Meredith 2-1.
Batters faced - A Cook 27; J Peavy 28; C Meredith 3.
April 8, 2007 at 3:06 pm
80&87: Yes, muchos kudos. “Crudge in left”. I love it.
Giants are about to lose 8 straight at home to the Dodgers. Pathetic.
April 8, 2007 at 3:07 pm
Nice makeup call for the Kouz strikeout way back when.
April 8, 2007 at 3:07 pm
91 - you got that right
April 8, 2007 at 3:08 pm
awesome. Let’s put in the tape from last night and play it again, Sam.
April 8, 2007 at 3:09 pm
oh, I love the way that this is shaping up… another El Hombre! winner could even get us some coverage with the east coast media!
April 8, 2007 at 3:11 pm
Love the Crudge nickname. On a related note, I’ve found a potential problem with “El Hombre!” for Adrian:
http://www.cafepress.com/elhombre
D’oh!
April 8, 2007 at 3:11 pm
okay, as for the masters, I’d love to see Tiger turn the hat backwards and go “over the top” on these last three holes…
April 8, 2007 at 3:12 pm
clutch base knock by OG. Have to mention since I rail on him when he hits the weak grounders to 2B
April 8, 2007 at 3:13 pm
oh yeah, let’s do this!
April 8, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Hombre!!!!! OK ’speare, little fly ball and let’s go home
April 8, 2007 at 3:13 pm
I love seeing the side view of El Hombre’s! swing!!!!
April 8, 2007 at 3:13 pm
Tiger misses the birdie on 16, Zach Johnson will be your Masters champion
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
95 … that’s why *OUR* El Hombre! has the exclamation point!!!
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
nonono… No more girlie swings like that Bardo
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Ack, so much for that.
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
101: not so fast… still two holes to play for tiger… and, Justin Rose isn’t dead yet, is he?
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
100 … I think that should read … El Hombre!’s swing
April 8, 2007 at 3:15 pm
Josh, Josh, Josh…the ONE thing you could NOT do there is GIDP
April 8, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Wow, that slide into first was almost as ugly as when Piazza did it last year. It doesn’t look good when the guy hits the dirt 3 feet from the bag and the first baseman already has the ball.
April 8, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Justin Rose is dead. He’s going to post a 7 on 17
April 8, 2007 at 3:16 pm
106: very true, I couldnt figure that one out…
Too bad on Bard, he’s usually really clutch.
April 8, 2007 at 3:16 pm
Cook gets thru 9 with 103 pitches …
Pitches-strikes - A Cook 103-70; J Peavy 103-67; C Meredith 10-7;
