IGD: Padres vs Rockies (7 Apr 07)
Sat, Apr 7, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: David Wells (3-5, 4.42 ERA) vs Josh Fogg (11-9, 5.49 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Analysis? Naw, it’s a Saturday. Let me just say that I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Josh Fogg due to his involvement in last season’s game of the year (as featured in the Ducksnorts 2007 Baseball Annual).
For the Padres, David Wells makes his season debut. With luck, he’ll get a little more offensive support than Greg Maddux received Friday night and the Padres can notch another win.
Due to circumstances beyond my control, I will not be able to join this evening’s festivities. Be good to one another; there’s beer in the fridge (yours, not mine). Go Padres!
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Geoff… I have a suggestion for a new poll.
In honor of keeping positive about Kouz, I suggest a poll being like…
“How many game winning home runs/RBI’s will Kouz hit this year?”
(Oh, and I realize most of what I say here is completely not serious at all - but this time I totally am)
April 7, 2007 at 7:32 pm
David looks just fine so far…
April 7, 2007 at 7:34 pm
wow - just tuned in… the “camo-forms” are horrible looking…
April 7, 2007 at 7:42 pm
are those two runs my fault or Mattie’s for saying he was pleased to see Carroll’s name in the lineup?
April 7, 2007 at 8:01 pm
Russell B!!!!
April 7, 2007 at 8:21 pm
I’m a little tired of this happening.
April 7, 2007 at 8:28 pm
Awesome throw by Bowen!!!
At least we know now we got a guy on our team that can do that.
April 7, 2007 at 8:32 pm
Good evening… little late to tonight’s affair. Greene, Branyan, Sledge coming up. Isn’t that basically our Murderer’s Row so far in this young season? Now about some runs, boys?
April 7, 2007 at 8:37 pm
More like suicide row :’(
April 7, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Ouch, this seems like a high-leverage spot worth using a better pitcher than Brocail …
April 7, 2007 at 8:53 pm
But he got Iannetta … so does the end justify the means?
April 7, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Surprised we didn’t see Meredith there. Black may be a little more flexible in his pen usage than Bochy.
April 7, 2007 at 8:55 pm
And manages (barely) to keep the streak alive.
April 7, 2007 at 9:00 pm
Finally, get that stud Fogg out of there so we can score some runs.
April 7, 2007 at 9:04 pm
SWEEEEET
I’ll take a sac fly
April 7, 2007 at 9:08 pm
El Hombre!
April 7, 2007 at 9:11 pm
TW - if you’re out there … I watched the movie “Hombre” last night … recommendable … and I can see where the book is likely better/deeper … and I like the symbolism our “Hombre” (Adrian Gonzalez) making a “sacrifice”
April 7, 2007 at 9:11 pm
crap, that’s the KG that I remember from last year…..
April 7, 2007 at 9:13 pm
2 questions …
April 7, 2007 at 9:14 pm
(ouch, how/why did that post prematurely?)
1. Do we send up Bard to hit next inning?
2. Who is our 3rd string catcher?
April 7, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Wow, that 8th inning sure looked easy on Yahoo … 11 pitches … 1-2-3 for Linebrink …
April 7, 2007 at 9:20 pm
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 7, 2007 at 9:23 pm
Hmmm, it’s not lookin’ like Bud reads Ducksnorts …
April 7, 2007 at 9:23 pm
I would rather have seen Linebrink bat than Geoff Blum’s feeble effort.
April 7, 2007 at 9:24 pm
He sent Blum out to bat vs a RHP … late in a tie game … I don’t get it …
April 7, 2007 at 9:29 pm
I started to feel bad too for knocking Blum when they were talking about him having a great spring.
But nope. He looked just as awkward as ever.
April 7, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Well, let’s see if Bud learn that Hoffy doesn’t do well in non-Save situations …
April 7, 2007 at 9:34 pm
VERY SWEET DOUBLE PLAY!!!!!
April 7, 2007 at 9:34 pm
there is zero chance that Josh “the lob” Barfield turns that…
April 7, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Phew! All I could think of was late July last year when the Pads blew that huge lead in Colorado and Hoffy blew the save…
April 7, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Sweet … I guess I’m the one stuck on past perceptions … now let’s go get Hoffy a W!
April 7, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Awesome pen.
April 7, 2007 at 9:36 pm
Alrighty, now let’s have the Bro-Giles end this!
April 7, 2007 at 9:37 pm
Great start! Does NOG sac now?
April 7, 2007 at 9:37 pm
For your between inning entertainment … a farm report … Portland Beavers got blitzed by Tim Linececum tonight … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_freaaa_1 … wonder whassup with Stauffer pitching in relief? … Jack Cust still hitless …
April 7, 2007 at 9:38 pm

April 7, 2007 at 9:39 pm

April 7, 2007 at 9:40 pm

April 7, 2007 at 9:42 pm
One more time … EL HOMBRE!
April 7, 2007 at 9:44 pm
Nice!
LM,
I don’t think they allow betting at the ballpark.
April 7, 2007 at 9:45 pm
Odd we didn’t see Fuentes there … 24 pitches yesterday … but hadnt pitched for a couple of days before that …
Also seemed odd to IBB OG …
W … in the books!
April 7, 2007 at 9:46 pm
Man, it sure is nice to have a bullpen that can hold a lead.
April 7, 2007 at 9:47 pm
44 … oops … wouldja believe “… be at …” ?
Wouldn’t it have been grand to have been there …
April 7, 2007 at 9:47 pm
46 … and a tie …
April 7, 2007 at 9:50 pm
A tie is a lead when you have Trevor
April 7, 2007 at 9:55 pm
And had we gone into extra innings still had Meredith and Bell in the wings…
April 7, 2007 at 9:57 pm
And Kevin Cameron, who looked great the other night.
April 7, 2007 at 10:03 pm
At AA San Antonio … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_tulaax_1 … Tim Brown wins it with a PH HR in the 9th …
April 7, 2007 at 11:07 pm
I was sitting in the left field bleachers, 1st row for that game, so El Hombre’s hit landed right in front of us. What a great win! I guess baseball strategy says to walk the batter to put the double play in effect, but I really don’t know if I would have walked Giles to get to Gonzales. I’m glad they did, though!
April 7, 2007 at 11:59 pm
53 - I’m *way* jealous … and similarly glad they walked OG …
April 8, 2007 at 12:20 am
I was similarly at the game, in the left field bleachers, and the place was definitely rocking.
It was interesting to see the two sides of OG at the plate: good OG turned on two inside pitches and hit line drive singles to right, one of them against a lefty. Bad OG hit two pop ups to left. Let’s hope we see more good OG this year.
April 8, 2007 at 7:47 am
One out, man on second, one run wins it. you’re pretty much going to have to face Adrian, might as well walk OG, put the douple play in effect and take your chances with Adrian and strikeout prone Cameron instead of OG and Adrian. pitching around OG would have risked a wild pitch and NOG on third with only one out. overall, i think it was a pretty shrewd move that thankfully didn’t work out. yo, adrian
April 8, 2007 at 9:12 am
anyone in San Diego able to explain how for the first time ever, the MLB package on Directv had the Padres feed of the game? It was great getting to hear Matty V. and Mark Grant do the game. Got the pregame and post game show as well. I’m hoping that it wasn’t just a 1 night tease and that it will happen more often this year.
April 8, 2007 at 9:18 am
Awesome. Great to see Adrian return to the opposite field after a very bried hiatus (games 3-4). Lot of singles, lots of base runners with leads to a lot of guys left out there, but good pitching and good defense kept us in it.
I kind of like that Branyan is producing. Arguably, this takes some pressure off Kouz, he can come in a bit slower. Yes, it creates more competition for the spot, but it also means Kouz does not have to hit right away. Whatever that’s worth.
Brocail definitely made me nervous, but I love how he came right after Ianneta after the walk.
Just to officially curse our pen:
13.1 IP, 7H, 0ER, 0R, 0hr, 2BB, 10SO
April 8, 2007 at 9:23 am
I cannot find how to get the opponents relief line against us (without adding up box scores). So far, our LF platoon has an OPS of 1.067.
Give him a little more time, but I could see Termel’s plate discipline get him into lead off, dropping M Giles down a bit, but in more RBI situations.
April 8, 2007 at 9:30 am
My stats where before last night; Relief streak to 15.1 innings…
