IGD: Padres vs Nationals (30 Apr 07)
Mon, Apr 30, 2007by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (3-0, 1.67 ERA) vs John Patterson (0-4, 7.71 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com
Reasons to Be Positive
- The Nationals are in town.
- Jake Peavy is on the mound.
- Regardless the outcome of Monday night’s game, the Pads will have a better April record than they had in 2005 (11-13) or 2006 (9-15), when they won the NL West.
Reasons to Be Negative
Plenty, but I’m tired of whining about them and it doesn’t really help. These guys are better than they’ve shown. They just need to get off their butts and prove it.
Go Padres!

another positive, and maybe someone can dig up the stats on this and despite the last 7 innngs of yesterday’s fun; we are hitting better and that makes for more entertaining baseball. Or as a friend pointed out, when you are hitting well, you are never out of it. The last 7 innings yesterday reminded me of the no-nitting padres of the last two years, boring and frustrating. Despite losing to the dogbones, those where intense games. Go Padres.
April 30, 2007 at 7:09 pm
It was a rough series, but all three of those games were close. Tough to lose 2 of 3, but it could have easily gone the other way.
April 30, 2007 at 7:14 pm
So what’s the word on NOG? Is he on the DL now?
April 30, 2007 at 7:14 pm
RE: Ichiro at 3rd base, anyone think it’s crazy to go hit OG some fungoes at 3rd? He would block a good portion of the infield just standing still…
April 30, 2007 at 7:18 pm
Adrian just grounded out on ball four.
April 30, 2007 at 7:19 pm
Peavy strikes out the side in the first.
I wrote in Jose Cruz on my All-Star ballot.
April 30, 2007 at 7:19 pm
I’m relatively concerned that they won’t take this series seriously enough.
April 30, 2007 at 7:25 pm
big mistake letting church get that double..he’s the only guy on the team that can hit..
April 30, 2007 at 7:26 pm
8: That’s not quite true. Lopez, Zimmerman, and Kearns can also hit.
April 30, 2007 at 7:27 pm
If he is the only hitter, then the rest of the batters will make outs.
April 30, 2007 at 7:27 pm
I love Jake’s competitiveness…but this is not the night for him to be barking at the ump…we need innings from him…lots of them..
April 30, 2007 at 7:27 pm
And Jake is doing his best effort to piss off the ump.
April 30, 2007 at 7:28 pm
why was Jake pissing off the ump?
April 30, 2007 at 7:28 pm
If they were that good of hitters wouldn’t the “nats” have more than 8 wins?
April 30, 2007 at 7:28 pm
I don’t think Jake is going to get the ‘respect’ calls for the rest of the night.
April 30, 2007 at 7:30 pm
#13: It got a little animated there, but as Jake was coming off, he and the ump appeared to patch things up. Reading lips, it looked like Peavy just wanted to know where a particular pitch had missed.
April 30, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Very nice KG…
April 30, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Nice shot KG
April 30, 2007 at 7:31 pm
Another XBH for Khalil. I love seeing him go to the opposite field like that.
April 30, 2007 at 7:32 pm
Geoff, were you at that marathon game yesterday?
April 30, 2007 at 7:33 pm
Greeney continues to take the ball the opposite way to utterly stun ptichers and outfield Ds.
C’mon Cameron, do something mildly productive here.
April 30, 2007 at 7:33 pm
“Singles are for wusses”
~Khalil Greene
April 30, 2007 at 7:34 pm
22: Did anyone else hear the story that Nevin told on the radio where Khalil told some mascot to “Fu** off”?
I personally think that it woulde be the single greatest thing to see Khalil Greene go crazy on a mascot.
Way to help out KG Cameron, you too Kouz.
April 30, 2007 at 7:35 pm
okay, that was a completely pathetic at bat by Cameron
April 30, 2007 at 7:35 pm
We seriously cannot strand base runners like this all game. We need to hit em fast and hard. We cannot lose to the Nats.
April 30, 2007 at 7:35 pm
#20: Yessir; all 17 innings. Arrived just before noon, left around 6 p.m.
April 30, 2007 at 7:35 pm
I would say it was only mildly pathetic. He did go to a full count before striking out.
April 30, 2007 at 7:36 pm
26: I was there as well, actually had front row section 302 seats that were nice. I ended up watching half a game up there (9 innings) and half a game down by my parents in 109 (8 innings).
Great game to go to, but made for a long trek home.
April 30, 2007 at 7:37 pm
For those not watching, Patterson also expressed a little displeasure at a low pitch that wasn’t called a strike. Looks like both pitchers will need to make an adjustment.
April 30, 2007 at 7:37 pm
25: Why not? Teams are going to lose to them 50 times this year. It’s baseball; any one game is not the end of the world.
April 30, 2007 at 7:39 pm
John Patterson is the most ridiculous looking person ever.
April 30, 2007 at 7:40 pm
26 & 28: You guys are troopers. I’ve got tix for tommorow night in section G, row 16, but I’ll be damned if I would stay until 2AM.
April 30, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Crudge!
April 30, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Crudge!
April 30, 2007 at 7:46 pm
C R U D G E !!!!!!
Feel it!
April 30, 2007 at 7:46 pm
Damn you Geoff. Just a couple of seconds too slow.
April 30, 2007 at 7:46 pm
We’re going to hit this guy tonight. Robles almost took him yard on a similar pitch.
April 30, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Nice throw by OG.
April 30, 2007 at 7:50 pm
Nice job by OG there to hold Belliard to a single.
April 30, 2007 at 7:52 pm
I almost forgot how much I hate Ronnie Belliard….
April 30, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Wow, great concentration by Peavy.
April 30, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Big DP and reaction by Jake & KG.
April 30, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Hey, field your position Jake! Nice one
April 30, 2007 at 7:53 pm
Peavy has played some excellent defense this year.
April 30, 2007 at 7:53 pm
You know Jake didn’t want that.
April 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Well, you don’t see that everyday. Peavy just pitched out of the windup with Church on first. Needless to say, Church stole second without a throw.
April 30, 2007 at 7:54 pm
Uh, did Jake forget he had a man on first?
April 30, 2007 at 7:55 pm
Jake really needs to focus here.
April 30, 2007 at 7:55 pm
….and there’s a run. How the heck did that just happen?
April 30, 2007 at 7:55 pm
We all have our moments.
April 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
is this really happening? are we really down 2 runs???
April 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
correction… 1 run… yikes.
April 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
#47: Apparently. That was bizarre. No further damage.
April 30, 2007 at 7:56 pm
51 - 1 run. see 33-35
April 30, 2007 at 8:00 pm
Matty V. just used the word ‘pretty’ in describing Adrian’s knock which is in clear violation of Man Law.
April 30, 2007 at 8:00 pm
54: see 52.. geesh, so quick to point out a mistake!
April 30, 2007 at 8:02 pm
The Padres continue to crush the ball.
April 30, 2007 at 8:03 pm
#57: …and have very little to show for it.
April 30, 2007 at 8:04 pm
Cesar Ramos tossed a three-hit shutout at San Antonio:

April 30, 2007 at 8:08 pm
I feel like we’re in the bizarro world. Coming into the season the one thing we knew was Kouzmanoff could hit. What we didn’t know was whether he could really field the position. One month in, and he looks extremely comfortable at 3B and can’t hit his way out of a paper bag.
April 30, 2007 at 8:17 pm
They showed a stat earlier I believe that said that Patterson hadn’t gotten out of the 5th in any of his starts this year.
As always, if you’re a pitcher it seems the cure for whatever ails ya is coming to Petco and pitching against the Pads. (sigh)
April 30, 2007 at 8:21 pm
#60: And he promptly makes another circus play.
April 30, 2007 at 8:21 pm
Great hand eye coordination there by Kouz.
April 30, 2007 at 8:27 pm
Next time Blum and Peavy start on the same game, I’d be inclined to hit Peavy 8th and Blum 9th. That way Blum can sacrifice Peavy over to second.
April 30, 2007 at 8:34 pm
Bases loaded with Josh at the plate. Pray for no DP.
April 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Let’s go KG!
April 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
Clayton - further evidence that the blind shall have sight when pitching against us in Petco: Rudy Seanez shut us down for 2 innings yesterday….
April 30, 2007 at 8:35 pm
There’s something almost as bad.
April 30, 2007 at 8:36 pm
A grand slam would be nice.
April 30, 2007 at 8:36 pm
DAMN!
April 30, 2007 at 8:36 pm
A ground ball to third, not so much…
April 30, 2007 at 8:39 pm
This inning is off to a great start. If they push that third run across this game is over.
April 30, 2007 at 8:41 pm
Thing is, Patterson doesn’t even look very sharp.
Sigh.
April 30, 2007 at 8:42 pm
So, Sheffield was hit by a pitch tonight, was restrained from charging the mound, and then smacked a 408 ft homer two innings later off the same pitcher that hit him. Does anyone remember the pirates game back at Jack Murphy when Sheffield was brushed back by a pitch (possibly by Zane Smith?), then got off the dirt without dusting himself off, and then promptly hit one of the few 2nd deck homers to left field in the history of the Murph??? Moral of this story: don’t mess with Sheff. He’s a baaaaad man.
April 30, 2007 at 8:43 pm
How do you groove a pitch to a rookie?
April 30, 2007 at 8:46 pm
I see this as being a very bad inning for us.
April 30, 2007 at 8:49 pm
When was the last time Jake walked a run in?
April 30, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Man, I hate to admit it, but that was a pretty impressive escape job.
April 30, 2007 at 8:54 pm
Good work by Jake to get out of his own mess. Now let’s go to work against this bullpen. We have 6 outs to tie the game. Otherwise it’s Cordero time.
April 30, 2007 at 8:55 pm
Also, for a guy that was griping about the strike zone earlier in the game, Jake is getting some generous calls on the outer half.
April 30, 2007 at 8:56 pm
Yeah, but at what cost to his arm? I’m a little worried about Jake’s pitch count rising to 120 the past two games - especially this early in the season.
April 30, 2007 at 8:56 pm
That slider on Lopez looked low and outside to me, but I am not complaining.
April 30, 2007 at 8:58 pm
That’s definitely Mike’s best shot of the year.
April 30, 2007 at 8:59 pm
if I were the nats, I’d intentionally walk Kouz….
April 30, 2007 at 9:03 pm
blum’s on deck… great……….
April 30, 2007 at 9:04 pm
Ah Oscar why did you have to go set up Blum for a GIDP? *knock on wood*
April 30, 2007 at 9:05 pm
Runners at the corners… but after last inning? I’m almost expecting the double play when we come back.
April 30, 2007 at 9:08 pm
That was nothing more than a pathetic AB, very Kouzmanoff-like.
April 30, 2007 at 9:08 pm
Okay, Blum only struck out.
April 30, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Buddy black is turning into a Blum Fool…
April 30, 2007 at 9:09 pm
Why is Cruz batting now, with two outs? I’d rather have seen him bat for Blum when King came in.
April 30, 2007 at 9:10 pm
If I sucked at my job as bad as Blum sucks at his I would be freaking homeless!!! What a “Blummer”.
April 30, 2007 at 9:11 pm
Wow - just saw on Sportscenter that Church stole second earlier (and therefore got into scoring position) when Peavy f’d up and pitched from the windup…..
April 30, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Wow, we didn’t convert there. I’m shocked.
April 30, 2007 at 9:12 pm
When did Bochy come back to manage? Blum pinch hitting and then taking Sledge out for Cruz…
April 30, 2007 at 9:12 pm
Blum’s numbers now are .091/.184/.152 … perhaps that gives KK some hope/confidence???
April 30, 2007 at 9:13 pm
i don’t see how Blum is the first option off the bench…
April 30, 2007 at 9:13 pm
This team really just knows how to inspire, to grab a bull by the horns.
April 30, 2007 at 9:14 pm
98 … me thinks they are grabing bull alright …
April 30, 2007 at 9:15 pm
59 … in addition to Ramos’ gem for San Antonio … Chase Headley with HR #5 …
April 30, 2007 at 9:16 pm
I hate to sound like leader of the knee-jerk crowd, but I’m so close to saying I am done with this. Still 3-1?!? Good corn.
April 30, 2007 at 9:16 pm
Nevin said on the radio he could be game ready in a couple weeks…I bet he could hit more than .110 and play 3B
April 30, 2007 at 9:17 pm
Any chance that the Padres suck it up and replace Blum with Padres’ pre-game show favorite Phil Nevin in order to get a RH bat?
April 30, 2007 at 9:18 pm
Goodgadalmightee… I was so pleased to have Bud Black replace Boch. But if Nady ran over Bochy’s dog or screwed his wife or vice versa, what is the 180 degree backwards relationship between Blum and Black? I shudder to think what could possibly explain these maddeningly delusional decisions.
April 30, 2007 at 9:18 pm
102 … ouch … now *that* is a low blow …
April 30, 2007 at 9:19 pm
I’m pretty convinced at this point that there is nothing Blum can do to lose his spot on the roster.
April 30, 2007 at 9:19 pm
104: made it worse when I heard the Nats announcers say that they heard that NOG was available to pinch hit…
April 30, 2007 at 9:20 pm
106: Where is Jeff Gilouly (or however you spell it) when we need him…
April 30, 2007 at 9:22 pm
Did you know … that KK has more HRs than David Wright? Look it up!
April 30, 2007 at 9:23 pm
why is that not a surprise
April 30, 2007 at 9:24 pm
This is just not our night. This team has been in a funk ever since Trevor blew Peavy’s 16K gem last week.
April 30, 2007 at 9:25 pm
Nice shot Bard, but it’s an AB too late!
April 30, 2007 at 9:25 pm
and then a solo shot just to keep us interested
April 30, 2007 at 9:26 pm
That was a no doubt shot… now if Khalil can do something with the fresh meat we can maybe get Jakkkkkkkkkke off the hook at least.
April 30, 2007 at 9:26 pm
A lot of well-struck balls tonight have found gloves. We could easily have 5 or 6 runs on the board right now.
April 30, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Good news: Blum can *not* PH in the 9th!!!
April 30, 2007 at 9:31 pm
Dodgers solution to a depleted pen…. they are using Tomko right now in relief.
April 30, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Ring’s looking a little erratic.
I’m excited about Cordero coming in, he’s struggled mightily this year.
April 30, 2007 at 9:35 pm
Our solution … Royce Ring … hmmm … seems like a high-enough leverage situation to go with Liney …
April 30, 2007 at 9:36 pm
Is it sad that I get home from softball and the first thing I do is read through the IGD that I missed?
April 30, 2007 at 9:39 pm
Ring is just nervous.
April 30, 2007 at 9:39 pm
120: only if you consider it sad that I read the IGD from g ames i didn’t watch..
April 30, 2007 at 9:40 pm
120 & 122: Face it, we are all baseball geeks in here. Nothing wrong with that.
April 30, 2007 at 9:41 pm
Cameron, Kouz, and Robles in the ninth. Plenty of opportunities for redemption here…
April 30, 2007 at 9:42 pm
Cameron & Kouz together don’t inspire a lot of excitement.
April 30, 2007 at 9:43 pm
123 … Amen!
ps. Welcome to the Padre bullpen, Royce!
April 30, 2007 at 9:43 pm
That was clearly ball four.
