IGD: Padres @ Rockies (22 Apr 07)

Sun, Apr 22, 2007Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 12:05 p.m. PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Greg Maddux (1-1, 3.86 ERA) vs Jason Hirsh (1-1, 3.38 ERA)

The Padres look to complete the sweep in Denver behind Greg Maddux. Despite his 6-1 career record at Coors Field, Maddux hasn’t pitched particularly well there, sporting a 5.96 ERA over 48 1/3 innings. He’s also run into trouble with a few of the current Rockies, most notably Garrett Atkins (.600/.600/1.300 in 15 AB), Matt Holliday (.389/.389/1.000 in 18 AB), and — wait for it — Willy Taveras (.500/.529/.750 in 16 AB).

If you need evidence that anything can happen in baseball, there it is: Taveras owns Maddux.

Tribune suggests Cruz leading off today. Anything up with Sledge? Or, is Black just sticking with what’s been hot?

Gameday confirms it - Cruz starting against a RHP. What’s up with Sledge? No more Crudge???

On a different note, I love the BP Adjusted Standings. It has the Padres in first, knocking down the Dodgers RS (basically they have well outperformed their batting line, either clutch or lucky and given up much fewer runs then their pitching line [again, clutch/lucky]). Interesting note is that the Padres on their third order RS (adjusted for the batting line [we've been unlucky in creating runs] and for the quality of pitching faced [we've faced good pitching]) we have 94 runs scored (vs 83 actual ones); what’s interesting about that is that is highest in all of baseball, including the AL. Interestingly, our adjusted runs allowed puts us right in the middle of the pack.

So, this suggests our offense has been excellent, if unlucky and facing good pitching, and our pitching is about right (71 actual RS vs. 72 AEQRA: unlucky on our pitching line [giving up more than the line suggested] and lucky in the quality of opponents faced [lots of SF, I guess])

I love the stuff, and am sure others look at it, but just an update.

    Blum is freaking useless!

  9. Bruce Says:

Where’s Oscar Robles when we need him? He’s off to a .327/.362/.500 start for the Beavers. I’d rather have him available to start for Giles and Greene when they need a break than Blum. Branyan can spot the IF corners. Blum can be replaced by P-Mac.

How many DPs has Blum initiated this year? His percentage of GIDP per AB has got to lead the majors.

Including today, it looks like de’s already grounded into 3 this year. Blum grounded into 5 each of the previous two seasons.

I am not in San Diego so I have to watch the games on MLB Extra Innings on DirecTv. Today they are showing the 4SD feed with Matt & Mud. They are so much better than the local Colorado broadcasters that had the broadcast yesterday. You are lucky if you get to watch 4SD everyday.

The Pads just tied it up 1-1 in the 4th.

I start watching and Cameron strikes out with a runner on second and no outs, and Maddux starts getting hit. Maybe I’ll just go back to bed.

  16. Phantom Says:

Lol, good call Ben. 3 base hits to lead off the 4th for the Rox is not a good thing.

Padres just aren’t swinging the bat today like they have been earlier.

And I’m on MLB.TV so I’m stuck with the Rox announcers.

  26. Marsh Says:

tough to say Maddux is having a bad game - seems by Coors Field standards he has kept us in it, but Hirsch has thrown a helluva game thus far.

  27. Marsh Says:

anyone know KG’s career stats at Coors Field? Seems like he has always jacked the ball here.

  28. Ben B. Says:

26: Yeah, but Maddux got pounded last inning. He was lucky two of the long fly balls were at fielders. Before that he was pretty solid.

Greene continues his inability to hit singles.

  29. jay Says:

Hirsch at 77 pitches through 6; yikes; this is looking like a complete game unless we start getting some hits or purposefully go deep in the counts.

    Go Pads.

Haha. Blum has drounded into a double play, struck out, and popped out. The three feeblest outs possible.

    Blum’s the man!

This is still a winnable game.

  33. Ben B. Says:

Rockies announcers - “Strikes out the side after the home run by Greene. Boy is that impressive.”
Not when you adjust for the quality of competition. Branyan is a good hitter, but strikes out a lot, so it’s not surprising. Blum is an awful hitter. Bowen is a poor hitter. So my spin would be Hirsch gave up a homer to half of the starting quality hitters he faced last inning.

  34. Marsh Says:

such a nice game by Hirsh… okay, so nows the time for us to kill their bullpen…

    Current score: 0
  35. Phantom Says:

Hirsch is out, so this could be our chance. Maddux needs to shut em down this inning and then our top of the order boys need to get it going.

    Current score: 0
  36. Ben B. Says:

Will Maddux show any interest in holding the runner? Stay tuned.

  37. Ben B. Says:

    Answer: No, not really.

    Current score: 0
  38. Ben B. Says:

Actually, Bowen had a shot at Taveras if he had made a perfect throw, so it’s not all on Maddux.

  39. Ben B. Says:

Bonds just homered. Memo to Arizona pitchers: STOP THROWING BALLS RIGHT DOWN THE MIDDLE AND WAIST HIGH WHEN BONDS IS HITTING.

  40. Phantom Says:

Maddux must really be one of those guys that doesn’t buy into the SB mythos either. Can’t argue with his success.

And this Corpas kid has got to give up runs at some point. Today sounds like a good time to do it.

39: At this point, there’s little doubt that he’s going to break the record, which I find abominable.

I think we should start an internet fund to raise money for Roger Clemens. We’ll make a deal with Clemens: For $10 million, your sole responsibility is to throw at Barry’s knees.

I think it would work. Roger likes his money. And he’s a dick.

I’d disagree with that balk call.

  48. Ranger31 Says:

That was just a little cheesy…

I remember 1986, every game that I went to that Doug Harvey umped, there was a balk called. My friends of mine joked about it all the time.

  49. Anthony Says:

That wasn’t even the worst Meredith balk move but they called it. The Rockies probably pointed it out to the umps before the inning.

  57. Ben B. Says:

That’s an unfortunate end. If Atkins isn’t hugging the line to prevent doubles, that’s probably a double down the line. I guess that’s why he was playing there.

  58. Phantom Says:

Damn. Khalil hit that ball hard, just right at Atkins.

  59. Phantom Says:

Dodgers better lose today, damnit. I’m sick of their inability to lose.

I thought the script called for a Khalil homer. Oh well, at least we took the series.

  61. Phantom Says:

I was hoping for a Khalil homer as well. :-(

He had a good offensive series in Colorado, per his norm. It’s just too bad that Hirsh completely shuts us down.

God I hope the Buccos can stop the Dodgers.
