Opening Day is finally here. Sorry, I’m too busy savoring the moment to offer actual analysis. Talk it up, y’all; these games count. Play ball!

Last year, with visions of Vinny dancing in my head, I put the Pads over/under at 75 and said I might take the under. For this and all my sins, I am truly sorry.
This year I’m putting it at 88 and might take the over - along with a third straight division title.
Go get ‘em, boys!
April 3, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Continuing the predictions from the last thread, I’m saying 91 wins and an NL West title. I think the main competition will be Arizona and that the Dodgers will underachieve.
And, oh yeah, WOOOOOOOOOOO, it’s opening day for the Padres!
April 3, 2007 at 1:30 pm
dprat … i like your style!
let’s go!
wasn’t game time supposed to be 1:05? ug, now i see it’s 1:35 … i’m ready!
April 3, 2007 at 1:32 pm
What a terrible day to be at work! I’ve got PADRES BASEBALL on the mind!
April 3, 2007 at 1:33 pm
mother scratcher! mlb.com has the Giants feed! already, I’m pissed the giants.. GO PADS!
April 3, 2007 at 1:34 pm
yup, that should read “I’m pissed AT the giants”… not sure what the alternative means…
April 3, 2007 at 1:37 pm
first pitch?
April 3, 2007 at 1:38 pm
OG!!!
April 3, 2007 at 1:38 pm
Padres baseball…on TV…it counts…All is right with the world!
April 3, 2007 at 1:38 pm
alright alright
April 3, 2007 at 1:39 pm
I’m surprised at seeing Cameron in the 3-slot. I’m really not sure his average warrants being in the 3-slot… oh well… Go Superglow-Giles!
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Gotta love the RBI…way to go with that pitch
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
wooohooo that was quick!
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
no chance Doc’s arm is going to get Superglow! Nice!
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Gotta love Roberts in CF. Keep hitting it there.
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
now that’s what I call immediate return on investment.
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
First run of the season!!!!!
April 3, 2007 at 1:41 pm
Zito-who?
April 3, 2007 at 1:45 pm
Giants announcers good enough to inform us that Gonzalez didn’t steal a base last year. They didn’t follow it up by letting us know that Gonzalez is the slowest runner in the majors (or second slowest behind Piazza).
Good first inning. We’re on pace to score ~1380 runs (162*9-81, since we’ll win every home game after 8.5 innings).
April 3, 2007 at 1:46 pm
Funny…I loved having Doc on our team, but was certainly not one of the ones crying about his leaving.
It is good to know that if there is going to be a play at the plate, the odds are good that we will end up with the run.
April 3, 2007 at 1:47 pm
OK Jake…calm down a bit. Take a deep breath. Play catch. Doc can’t take you deep. He can’t hurt you that much. Go right after him.
April 3, 2007 at 1:49 pm
21: yeah, it’s funny that in panning Peavy at the end of last year for getting too amped up in big games (and I was one of the complainers), I guess we forgot about his solidy opening day performance in both the WBC and regular season. Let’s hope we see the “non-playoff” Peavy today…. (wait, too early to Peavy bash?.. .truthfully, I’m a big fan, but I just want so badly for him to be “the man” consistently)
April 3, 2007 at 1:50 pm
It’s like Welcome Back Day at DS. It’s great to see everyone again. Pads score in the first. Life is good.
April 3, 2007 at 1:50 pm
peavy with a “Monica Seles” like grunt on the 0-2 pitch to bonds…
April 3, 2007 at 1:51 pm
For the office bound, bandwidth resricted (yes they monitor and report BW to your manager), please post the score and the highlights. Apparently, OG knocked somebody in.
Aw, baseball is back, like a old freind you see everyday in the park, its a welcome sight.
April 3, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Too bad, that was a nice pitch by Peavy.
April 3, 2007 at 1:51 pm
23: Agreed!
Bonds - hit it with his purse…. (sorry Padres Gal).
April 3, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Stop nibbling, Jake.
April 3, 2007 at 1:52 pm
25: 1-0 Pads. Bonds on first, Durham up. 2-outs.
April 3, 2007 at 1:53 pm
And Peavy forgets Bonds is on first. Stolen base.
April 3, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Bonds stole second. Blame the pitcher on that one.
April 3, 2007 at 1:53 pm
Greene bounces the throw to first, Bonds tried to score (feeling froggy after the SB) and was out by a mile.
April 3, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Bonds stole off of Peavy? I am in Charlotte, so am only listening, but that’s nuts. Ah, Bonds is slow enough to get nailed at home anyway.
April 3, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Tom…glad I was not the only one thinking he was nibbling…
That play was unusual. How often does AGon drop that throw?
April 3, 2007 at 1:54 pm
Greene wasn’t close with that throw. Good thing Barry got greedy.
April 3, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Well that was exciting, but ultimately no harm done. Great hurried throw home by Gonzalez. Jake looked really good that inning, hitting most of his spots really well, and getting three easy ground balls and the K.
April 3, 2007 at 1:55 pm
Bonds getting nailed at the plate was classic. He forgot who he was for a moment…
April 3, 2007 at 1:55 pm
crazy.. durham sharply hit ground ball to KG sliding towards the bag.. KG’s throw is in the dirt, squibs away from AGon… Bonds tries to score.. Agon throws to Bard, who applies the tag to Bonds leg as Bonds elects to “not get dirty” at homeplate….three outs. Pads win their first innning of the year… Hooray!
Now then, anyone with a replay want to confirm that Bonds, in all his laziness, didn’t get his foot in prior to the tag? It looked close to me…
April 3, 2007 at 1:56 pm
A lot of pitches for Peavy, though.
April 3, 2007 at 1:57 pm
Are you surprised Greg?
April 3, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Greene with the shot to the warning track in dead center.
April 3, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Nope. I guess I had been hopeful.
April 3, 2007 at 1:58 pm
Interesting.. major league baseball has received rave reviews for expanding its revenue base considerably through its mlb.tv package…. yet, they haven’t figured out how to put advertising content between innings?? stunner…
April 3, 2007 at 2:00 pm
Marsh - it’s only a matter of time.
and speaking of advertising content between innings, the Toyota “I want my MPG” radio spot is already driving me insane, and it’s the middle of the 2nd inning of the first game of the season.
if anyone from the ad buying side of XPRS is reading this…please make it stop…
April 3, 2007 at 2:01 pm
Hi, all! Sorry I’ve been missing since I’ve returned from Spring Training. The work “In Box” took me several days just to unbury myself. But I’m here! Scouting for the Padre to replace Josh Barfield in my quest to produce a Padres baby. (just/kidding)
Nice to see Adrian has started where he left off. Being a run producing machine and saving our butts at first base!
April 3, 2007 at 2:02 pm
44: worse yet, currently mlb.tv is airing a slow “pong-like” bit…. you’d have to experience it to believe it, but only because it is so annoying did I notice that mlb.tv was forfeiting potential ad revenue….
April 3, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Jake is pounding that outside corner.
The Giants announcers are pointing out that the ball seems to be really carrying today.
April 3, 2007 at 2:03 pm
Bonds’ out at the plate was ALL on Flannery
April 3, 2007 at 2:03 pm
That wind is blowing hard. Balls off the end of the bat are going to the track.
Jake’s into the free-swinging part of their lineup. If he can get through this quick, mid-20s pitches for 2 innings isn’t bad.
April 3, 2007 at 2:05 pm
So far Jake 2007 looks like Jake 2006. Ahead in the count, trouble finishing the deal.
April 3, 2007 at 2:05 pm
Geez, how many pitches was that to Feliz — eight? Yuck.
April 3, 2007 at 2:06 pm
48: LOL.
April 3, 2007 at 2:08 pm
At the end of 2:
Picther: Pitches (strikes)
Peavy: 34 (22)
Zito: 23 (16)
April 3, 2007 at 2:10 pm
NOG not even giving Jake a chance to get a drink of Gatorade.
April 3, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Anyone else catching the Giants feed? Are they actually paying Cammy Blackstone girl for that crap?
April 3, 2007 at 2:10 pm
Peavy with a much, much better at bat than NOG.
April 3, 2007 at 2:11 pm
Another 6 pitches from Zito….
April 3, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Nice breaking ball to get Winn.
April 3, 2007 at 2:14 pm
Hey I just thought of something.. isn’t Flan the Giants 3B coach? Blame him for that Bonds debacle.
April 3, 2007 at 2:15 pm
59: see 48. Timing is everything…..
April 3, 2007 at 2:15 pm
2 up, 2 Ks.
April 3, 2007 at 2:16 pm
By having Peavy in the 9th spot in our lineup instead of Zito, we probably gain 200 points of OPS!
April 3, 2007 at 2:16 pm
It looks like Roberts can hardly keep from smiling as he flails at Jake’s pitches.
April 3, 2007 at 2:17 pm
Damn. Jake has to make that play.
April 3, 2007 at 2:18 pm
Man, the Giants have just been crushing the ball for their hits.
April 3, 2007 at 2:19 pm
For the benefit of those not watching, that was sarcasm.
April 3, 2007 at 2:21 pm
Pitches thru 3: Jake 52; Zito 32
April 3, 2007 at 2:21 pm
67 … here’s more details …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 52-34; B Zito 32-24.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 3-2; B Zito 4-5.
Batters faced - J Peavy 11; B Zito 11.
April 3, 2007 at 2:22 pm
When Cameron was in egypt’s land….
April 3, 2007 at 2:24 pm
…. let my Cameron go…… (Ferris Buehlers day off)
April 3, 2007 at 2:25 pm
I hate to say it, but that was a hell of a play by Durham.
April 3, 2007 at 2:25 pm
Terrific play by Durham to his left to rob Adrian.
April 3, 2007 at 2:25 pm
No worries. Bard takes care of business.
April 3, 2007 at 2:26 pm
Shakespeare!
April 3, 2007 at 2:26 pm
crap. I’ve got a significant delay here. I read Geoff’s quote, then checked back and watched Bard deliver..
April 3, 2007 at 2:28 pm
I like Matty V.’s idea for a Channel 4 slogan: “New team, same tired act.”
April 3, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Nice clank by Pete Happy
April 3, 2007 at 2:29 pm
Feliz makes the Padres fans happy!
April 3, 2007 at 2:30 pm
#76: Just to clarify, that’s in reference to their shtick, not the Padres.
April 3, 2007 at 2:31 pm
What’s the over-under on career games played by Kouzmanoff before they stop mentioning every at bat that he homered on his first major league pitch? Gotta be at least 200.
April 3, 2007 at 2:32 pm
nice having bonds in left
April 3, 2007 at 2:32 pm
There’s a fly ball by Kouz that any other left fielder in baseball catches.
April 3, 2007 at 2:32 pm
ROY!!!
April 3, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Great at bat by the mashin’ Macedonian. Fouls off a bunch of pitches then drives one he likes for the single.
April 3, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Good approach against Zito this inning. Make him work.
April 3, 2007 at 2:33 pm
I wish I could be watching this game! Sounds like Bonds did a little slippy-side on the grass.
April 3, 2007 at 2:33 pm
80 … that’s because it was a GRAND SLAM!
April 3, 2007 at 2:33 pm
Boch will probably put in Klesko as a late inning defensive replacement!
April 3, 2007 at 2:34 pm
One more reason for SF fans to boo Cruz. Nice at-bat.
April 3, 2007 at 2:35 pm
88: I was thinking the same thing earlier, and it’s not a joke. That’s like using Piazza as a pinch runner.
April 3, 2007 at 2:35 pm
Why are Giants fans booing Cruz? He played for them, yes. Did he leave on bad terms? Really suck for them?
April 3, 2007 at 2:36 pm
I’m hoping Peavy keeps his bat on his shoulder…oh wait, darn it, now there are two strikes..
April 3, 2007 at 2:37 pm
Rough inning for Zito, so far. They’ve already got Hennessy warming in the pen.
Jake’s battling at-bat.
April 3, 2007 at 2:37 pm
way to fight Jake!
April 3, 2007 at 2:37 pm
91 … Cruz went .250/.366/.414 in 2003 for the Gi’nts in 158 games (539 ABs) …
April 3, 2007 at 2:38 pm
if my calculations are correct, that was a 37 pitch inning for Zit-o.
April 3, 2007 at 2:38 pm
Really wished Jake could have drawn another walk.
April 3, 2007 at 2:39 pm
96 … yup … after top of 4th …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 52-34; B Zito 69-46.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 3-2; B Zito 7-5.
Batters faced - J Peavy 11; B Zito 18.
April 3, 2007 at 2:39 pm
91: I don’t think they’re booing him… after all, a 366 OBP ain’t bad. More likely it’s Cruuuuuuuuuuuuuz that you’re hearing.
April 3, 2007 at 2:40 pm
#91: Read paragraph 6 here:
http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.....article=41
April 3, 2007 at 2:40 pm
97 … or kept the bat on his shoulder, as Marsh suggested …
April 3, 2007 at 2:40 pm
97: Now I go back to wishing Jake would have just kept his bat on his shoulder and taken strike 3…
April 3, 2007 at 2:40 pm
#97: I’d have settled for a strikeout.
April 3, 2007 at 2:41 pm
100: Okay, maybe I’m out in left field… just like Cruz.
April 3, 2007 at 2:42 pm
Why walk Barry when he stole a base? Jake better keep his eye on him this time around.
April 3, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Another nice backdoor slider from Jake.
April 3, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Barry really didn’t get walked-the strike zone kind of went away during the AB
April 3, 2007 at 2:43 pm
37 pitch inning for Zito!
April 3, 2007 at 2:43 pm
