I think David Wells is starting for the Padres, but there’s no way to be sure. Well, there probably is, but I can’t find it.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Wells is starting and getting pounded. Branyan is playing left field and looks a bit confused out there.

In any other park, Konerko has two homers today. He hit a double in his first at-bat that went high off the batter’s eye in deep CF. Wells has allowed seven runs and recorded four outs. Ugly…

Holy smokes. Adrian just cleared the batter’s eye in CF!

Bud Selig is in the TV booth with Matt and Mud. Selig is talking about what great shape the game is in right now in terms of popularity.

Not a good start for Wells!
March 18, 2007 at 1:51 pm
Peter Gammons is now in the booth.
March 18, 2007 at 1:52 pm
Gammons has nice things to say about Bud Black. Calls the NL West race very tight.

Branyan kicks another ball in LF. I miss Ryan Klesko.

Mud was talking about Branyon playing today because someone was scratched from left. Who was scratched?
March 18, 2007 at 2:20 pm
Not sure who was scratched. On another note, Kouzmanoff just crushed a ball to dead center.
March 18, 2007 at 3:41 pm
Two things that won’t show up in the boxscore:
1. Kouzmanoff made a real nice play at third on a bunt attempt by Pablo Ozuna.
2. Cla’s line looks ugly, but none of those runs should have scored. The shortstop dropped the throw on a ball hit by Robert Valido. I believe it was ruled a double, but it should have been the first out of the eighth inning and the guys who ended up doing all the damage never should have batted.

Ugly looking day; Yahoo doesn’t have the full box yet, but not looking forward to it. I am not too worried about Meredith, but Wells has not had a good spring, but somehow that does not bother me either. He does seem like the type of guy who goes out the tweaks things, but knows how to really focus when the game gets going. Wishful thinking perhaps. But it is pretty cool that he is probably our #5. I don’t want to jinx Hensley, but if Young, Peavy and Hensley do what they did last season (or near it), that is a tough top 3.

#12: FYI padres.com has the current box score updated throughout the game

9 - guess it wasn’t McAnulty because he came in the game and got 2 ABs … box score shows he played LF after replacing Branyan in the lineup …

This is troublesome … in more ways than one …
Padres manager Bud Black revealed Sunday morning, hours before the Padres lost, 14-7, to the White Sox at Peoria Stadium, that Stauffer has been shut down for five to seven days because of a muscle strain near his right biceps.

9 … they were probably refering to Cruz … here’s info …
Jose Cruz Jr. is day-to-day with a slightly strained left hamstring also sustained in Saturday’s game. Cruz went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer, his third of the spring. He’s hitting .308 (8-for-26) in nine Cactus League games. Black said that holding out Cruz on Sunday was just a precautionary measure and the club would continue to monitor it during the next few days.
