Winter Cleaning

Longtime reader Eric has given me an excellent gift for the holidays in the form of a new header graphic. I sent him over a few photos I’d taken at Petco Park during the season, and he turned them into something spectacular.

I’m also making a few minor tweaks here and there, so if things look a little different, it’s not you, it’s me.

Anyway, big thanks to Eric for the new header!

Buster Olney is reporting that Alex Rios is available. The Blue Jays are apparently looking for a solid SP for their up-and-coming OF. He’s perhaps the best defensive RF in baseball right now.

I would consider dealing Clay Hensley for Rios and putting Rios in right while shifting Giles to LF. Last year Rios hit .304/.349/.516 and he’s still only 25. It’d be nice to add another athletic and high ceiling guy to the Padres roster.

TOO funny!!! I was literaly ready to post essentially the same comment as Paul and I noticed his post w/ a 2:19 timestamp. I looked up at my clock – 2:20…

Well, Paul and I just got off the phone discussing the above… Our team is in such a good situation: Towers/Alderson have again compiled a solid bullpen whether we have Linebrink or trade him, we the favorites to sign David Wells, and we among finalists to sign Mulder.

Whether we go after Burrell, Baldelli, Rios, or some unidentiied player, there’s not too many teams that can match our offer of Linebrink &/or Hensley (who together make about $2.25mm – we could also add Sledge to a deal).

I just don’t get all the doom-and-gloom’ers who whine about our lack of off-season moves. We HAVE to be considered the faves to threepeat in the NL West.

By the way, great header Eric!

    I like the new header.

If Rios is available, they should hop on that. He is a fantastic player, with a lot of upside. Good speed, emerging power, rocket arm. That would be a great addition.

2: If we’re not the favorites, that’s fine too, maybe the Pads can sneak up on some people. So far this offseason, looks like a series of solid moves. Not spectacular, just solid. That’s fine with me, as long as it yields results.

    Maddux
    Brocail
    Cruz Jr
And the best move of all . . .
    releasing Bellhorn

The new header is really solid.

I’d be interested in Rios…he really seemed to put it together this year.

Perhaps a bit hokey, but Time magazine’s Person of the Year is … US … ie. you … and me … and especially GY :-)

… thanks, GY, for all you do for our Padres community!

I just figured, since Geoff’s writing is ready to go big-time, his blog header should look big-time.

Eric, that was a nice, subtle way of patting yourself on the back (LOL), don’t throw your back out buddy. – JK, seriously though, good job on the header.

Here’s an interesting Bill James interview:

    http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/sports/baseball/16256018.htm?source=rss&channel=philly_baseball

    …w/ a particularly interesting strategy Q&A:

Q: How much does a manager control the outcome of a game or a season with his in-game decisions?

A: Here’s the thing, you can take a strategic situation: Should I intentionally walk somebody? You can study it and study it and study it. But when you get to the end of the day, it’s usually not clear what the right option is even after you study it. Most strategic decisions rest on variations in situations which are so small, so subtle, that you really can’t say with great confidence what the right thing to do is. I have no doubt that there are some managers who are able to interfere with their team’s ability to win, but if I was evaluating a manager, I wouldn’t put much weight in that because I don’t have much confidence in my ability or anybody else’s ability to say for sure whether he made the right decision in a situation.

Eric, just playin’ man, and you’re right, Geoff does an amazing job and his new header (thanks to you) is on par w/ his work.

    From the above article:

“Kouzmanoff is expected to platoon at third with Russell Branyan.”

    …First I’ve heard of that…

Rosenthal assumption? It is conceivable, esp. if Kouzmanoff struggles.

No, I’d bet that Kenny R. is wrong on that unless Kouz struggles a lot initially. We didn’t give up Barfield to get a platoon partner for Branyan.

  18. Posted December 18, 2006 at 12:20 am | Permalink

17: Still, I’d expect Branyan to get a lot of PAs this season (not necessarily all at third, but a hefty portion of them).

Just thought this was interesting — potentially bad news for JD Drew. And the Red Sox.
