Two years and $12.5 million for Woody. Woody really became one of my favorite players this past season, mostly because he wasn’t a “pitcher” like everyone else on the staff (I played catcher in high school and decided that as a whole, I hate pitchers). He didn’t give away at-bats, fielded his position excellently, and was an all-around gamer. And except for his playoff start, he won every big game we needed in the second half. I really wanted him back. All that said, I’m happy we didn’t give him a two-year deal.

We also get a supplemental pick in the first round of the draft and Houston’s second rounder.

Man, with these prices for hitters, it makes us look stupid for not renewing the option on Mike Piazza’s contract. He’s cheap, short-term, and would have been perfect for continued power from a spot in the order that will now be somewhat of a weakness.

On a side note, Pat Dobson, former Padres pitcher and pitching coach has passed away at age 64. When I heard the news, it brought up fond memories of the great job he did with the 1989 squad.
