The Padres go for a sweep of the Phillies Wednesday afternoon and try to salvage a split of the current homestand. Four more home runs were hit in Tuesday night’s 10-6 victory, bringing the season total at Petco Park this year to 120. That surprasses last season’s total of 118, with 29 home dates remaining. We’ll keep tracking that over in the sidebar.
Mike Thompson, recalled from Triple-A Portland to replace the injured Chris Young, makes his 10th start of the season. Thompson did a solid job earlier in the year while Woody Williams was on the shelf. As for Young, he’s expected to miss just one start due to a “strain to the top of his right foot.”
The Phils counter with Jon Lieber. Like most of their rotation, Lieber has an ERA on the wrong side of 5.00.
Now leading the division by 3 1/2 games, the Padres have a chance to extend their lead before spending the rest of the month doing battle on the road with key NL West rivals. They’ve had double-digit hits in each of the past seven games. Time to keep ‘em coming and finish the homestand on an up note.
Go Padres!

Who did the Padres send down to bring up Thompson?
July 19, 2006 at 9:04 am
I heard that they designated Cassidy for assignment a few days ago but I have no clue if that’s true or not. If so Thompson might be taking his roster spot until Johnson comes off the DL.
July 19, 2006 at 9:06 am
So are we all missing something?? Maybe, just maybe, the pitching park status at Petco has more to do with the weak offense the Pads have been trotting out the last couple of years coupled with a decent pitching staff…I think a lot of extreme numbers can be explained away by that.
We certainly have not been running out the likes of ARod, Manny, or even Jorge Cantu…instead it has been Burroughs, Payton, Vazquez. Not exactly a powerful middle of the line-up no matter where you hit.
July 19, 2006 at 9:17 am
CM - I can’t say that I’ve worked thru the “park factor” math, but it’s my understanding that it adjusts for “weak offense” by comparing what happens “on the road” to what happens “at home”. If a “weak offense” does well in road games but not in home games, then that still qualifies the home park as a “pitcher’s park”.
July 19, 2006 at 9:20 am
1. Cassidy was optioned to Portland, not designated.
2. Ramon Vazquez never played in Petco.
3. Buildings have gone up, it’s hot, the fence came in. But we have not had a lot of power, that’s true. I’ve noticed fewer demands for us to recreate the 1985 St. Louis Cardinals, which is nice.
July 19, 2006 at 9:20 am
Here’s a link the Portland Beavers game story from yesterday … http://tinyurl.com/pqpm3 … Tucson’s 3B, Brian Barden, was 4-for-4 and has batted at a .532 clip in July with five homers and 16 RBIs in 12 games to raise his average to .314. He has hit safely in his last nine contests with seven straight multi-hit games. The 2002 sixth-round draft pick has scored in 13 straight dating back to June 30.
Good pic of him at the link
He’s my nominee for who the Padres should trade for!
July 19, 2006 at 9:22 am
Cassidy pitched an inning and got a save yesterday for the Portland Beavers … http://tinyurl.com/rlsn2
July 19, 2006 at 9:36 am
They sent Cassidy down to open a spot for Brocail, Im guessing they may send sweeny or Adkins down to make rrom for Thompson.
July 19, 2006 at 9:38 am
Nice suggestion LynchMob! I’d love a young prospect at 3rd.
July 19, 2006 at 9:41 am
the Marlins have a good 3B prospect in AAA (Mike Kinkade) as well, with Cabrera moving to 3B maybe they would be willing to part with him.

woh he’s 33 n/m
July 19, 2006 at 9:44 am
did not realize it was this Mike Kinkade

Its got to be the weather, been hot and muggy lately, which may help the ball travel v. the cool ocean air off the bay which may slow the ball down. Could be a coincidence, but since its been hot, the Pads offense has been hot. Of course, Merv seems to be making an impact as well. I wonder if the Padres keep track of the type of weather, the micro-climate if you will, at Petco for each game? Be interesting to run those numbers with the offensive numbers and see if soemthing pops up. No doubt, Philly and ATL pitching have helped. But, OTOH, no doubt balls are going further.
BTW, if Mike had caught that ball in center last night, would have been the highlight of the year. And he nearly had it. Certainly laid our for it.
BTW2, I’m learning not to count the Pads out in late innnings.
BTW3, Can’t help but think Linebrink is a little rattled by all the trade talks. Maybe esplains why he’s struggling a bit.
July 19, 2006 at 10:18 am
I’m tiered of ESPN and their blatant east coast bias. Every where the padres are mentioned on ESPN.com it mentions that they are leading a crappy division, well lets put that theory to the test.
The NL east is comprised of 5 teams and has a total of 224 wins on average that’s 44.8 wins per team.
The NL central comprised 6 teams and has a total of 261 wins on average that’s 43.5 wins per team.
The NL west is comprised of 5 teams and has a total 235 wins on average that’s 47 wins per team.
Since interdivision win’s and losses will cancel each other out the extra wins must come from non divisional opponents, and all NL teams did poorly in inter-league play, so how ever you want to slice it the NL west is the best in senior circuit.
So id like to add to more letters to that famous east coast sports outlet FU ESPN.
P.S. Ill still watch baseball tonight when i get home (its like crack)
July 19, 2006 at 10:26 am
Linebrink’s been giving up the gopherball all year, long before trade talks. He was due to regress this year, as his previous campaigns were too good to be true (there’s also a mathematical explanation for his regression - though the league’s still around .200 against him - but I don’t remember where I ready it).
Lynch - kinda thinking the likelihood of getting a prospect from Tuscon (the Arizona Diamondbacks AAA affiliate) is a bit unlikely. It would be sweet, though. The White Sox have a pretty good looking 3B at AAA whose blocked by Crede (Josh Fields .327/.405/.553. They are also pretty willing trade partners (Kenny Williams is aggressive, anyway).
I say, put CY on the DL. Lets make sure we nip this thing in the bud. Give Thompson 2-3 starts and call it a day. He’s got plenty of options, right?
July 19, 2006 at 10:27 am
After watching Brocail and Embree give up 3 runs without recording an out last night, they better demand a mint for Linebrink.
July 19, 2006 at 10:32 am
I wonder what it will take to get Fields, maybe the sox will take Pmac and one other prospect (they need a CF but we dont have one to offer)
July 19, 2006 at 10:33 am
ESPN does have a bias toward the east coast, but I am also a little tired of myopic west coasters truly believing that the NL West is great. Is there a team in the NL West that can play with the Mets? Can the Padres match up with the Braves? Yes, as a whole, the NL West is the most competitive, but that doesn’t mean there’s parity. “Average” and “parity” aren’t the same thing. There are a bunch of average teams in the NL West who are trying to nudge ahead of each other, despite themselves. The Pads are my team, so I support them, but come on…Woody Williams? Chan Ho Park? Clay Hensley? We just don’t match up…especially when Peavy is 4-8. Let’s hope KT can work some magic.
July 19, 2006 at 10:38 am
PMac and a prospect for Fields? To get Fields, it would need to look more like: Kottaras, Carrillo, and Ekstrom. Fields is one of the best looking prospects in milb. He’s 23, plays a power position and actually hits for power, has 17 SB, only 9 errors. Those three might not even be enough…throw in Linebrink and Khalil.
July 19, 2006 at 10:39 am
More splits on the Div
NL West
50-54 vs NL East (because the Mets are 13-7 and the Plillies are 16-12 vs the NL west, Padres are 2-2 vs the mets and 4-1 vs the Phillies)
62-50 vs the NL Central
35-40 vs the AL
NL Central
50-62 vs the NL West
57-55 vs the NL East
31-62 vs AL
NL East
54-50 vs NL West (see notes above)
55-57 vs NL Central
32-52 vs AL
thats all my nerd stats for the day
July 19, 2006 at 10:41 am
Useless information: Padres are 11-3 on Wednesdays this season (though all three losses have come at home).
July 19, 2006 at 10:41 am
Shoot, we probably have a better shot at Crede in the off season than Fields now.
July 19, 2006 at 10:42 am
the pads are 2-2 vs the Mets this year, so yes I would say that they have hung in with them, the Braves have killed the pads this year but I don’t think they will have to worry about the braves in the playoffs.
Its true that the NL west does not have a team like the mets this year but then again they do not have a team like the nationals or marlins either.
July 19, 2006 at 10:49 am
The Mets are 56-37, which is six games better than the Padres and they also have record of 23-12 against other NL east opponents all of which have sub .500 records. Now if the Mets were in the NL west where every team except one has a record of .500 or better do you think they would still be 56-37?
July 19, 2006 at 10:51 am
I know the Sox would not just take Pmac for fields, my point was that they need a CF and we do not have one besides Cameron to offer them therefore i dont think they could get a deal done.
July 19, 2006 at 10:53 am
steve -
You’re right. In a 5 or 7 game series I’m sure the Pads will undoubtedly beat up on the Mets. When the pressure of the post-season is on, I’m sure Peavy (yet to pitch meaningful post-season innings), Woody, Chan Ho, and Chris Young will hold up well against Pedro, Glavine, El Duque, and Trachsel. I’m sure we’ll feel much more comfy with Hoffy (post-season stud) at 82mph than the Mets will with Billy Wagner. Getting to the post-season is all we can hope for, because rest assured, if we played in the East or Central, we’d be at or near the basement.
Also, honestly, I would trade rosters with the Marlins right now in a heartbeat. That team is going to be awesome for years to come (not to mention they are stocked with great young talent on the way, which have very little of).
July 19, 2006 at 10:56 am
Steve-
The other teams in the East have sub .500 records substantially because they play the Mets! If the Mets were in the West and the Pads were in the East, the east teams would all have a lot more wins and the West would be top heavy.
July 19, 2006 at 11:06 am
ask the phillies, and nationals and marlins how the pads would do in the East. The pads have actualy done better this season against the NL East than the NL West.
July 19, 2006 at 11:13 am
“Give Thompson 2-3 starts and call it a day. He’s got plenty of options, right?”
Options aren’t relevant. When a team uses an option to play a 40-man guy in the minors, that option applies for the whole *year*. You can send a guy up and down as much as you want within that year.
July 19, 2006 at 11:14 am
So I’m agreeing with Jesse (I’m not sure if it came across that way). Just saying it doesn’t cost the team anything to send Thompson up and down.
July 19, 2006 at 11:16 am
Glavin is 12-15 with and ERA of 3.44 in the post season
Wagner is 1-0 with and ERA of 9.64 in the post season
That just screams dominance
Pedro has good post season #’s but will he be healthy enough to pitch?
Hernadez also has good post season #’s but he is a shell of hid former self.
Trachsel has never been in the play offs
July 19, 2006 at 11:47 am
Two starters can win you a 5 or 7 game series, and Peavy/Young are a pretty good 1-2 punch. Hensley is middle relief in the playoffs.
July 19, 2006 at 11:48 am
Boch just siad on 1090 that Castilla has been relased
July 19, 2006 at 12:07 pm
Great news about Vinny. I wonder if this means a deal for a 3B is in the works as I doubt a Bellhorn/Blum platoon will be long-lasting. Now if only we can drop EY when Johnson is ready to come off the DL.
July 19, 2006 at 12:13 pm
Nothing at mlb.com about VinnyC … yet … the anticipation is killing me!!! Oh please, oh please!
July 19, 2006 at 12:15 pm
I’d guess that something would be in the works for them to axe Vinny that way.
They must be really confident that Young can make his next start or else I’d think they would DL him retroactively. That way he’d only miss this start and one more his minimum DL time was up…sounds like Thompson is one and done.
July 19, 2006 at 12:16 pm
Bellhorn appears to be in today’s lineup @ 3B … so perhaps they released VinnyC to make room for Thompson?
July 19, 2006 at 12:18 pm
How ironic is this … in the padres.com preview (link’d by GY above), it says this …
Player to watch
Vinny Castilla is a lifetime .313 hitter against Lieber (15-for-48) with two doubles, two home runs and three RBIs.
July 19, 2006 at 12:23 pm
Padres record to date: 50-43
Padres vs. NL West . . .15-16
Padres vs. NL Central . 14-6
Padres vs. NL East . . . 14-13
Padres vs. AL . . . . . . . .7-8
Padres have yet to play Cincinnati and Houston.
Padres have winning records vs:
LAD (+2), SF (+2), Phi (+3), Wsh (+3), StL (+1), ChiC (+7), & Pitt (+1)
Padres have losing records vs:
Az (-4), CO (-1), Atl (-5), Mil (-1) & the AL (-1)
Padres have split with:
NYM & Fla
July 19, 2006 at 12:24 pm
Here’s a VinnyC departure preview … http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....notes.html … must read!
July 19, 2006 at 12:27 pm
Yes that’s my read, Vinny cut to make room for Thompson. I am sure it came down to either EY of Vinny, but EY is our only other OF at the moment. With our bullpen currently like Forrest’s box of chocolates, I can see why they did not want to send down another pitcher.
July 19, 2006 at 12:28 pm
WOW!!! That’s some crazy news. I never thought the Pad’s would actually have the stones to actually release Vinny. Now if only they would do the same with EY.
Do you think there is a deal in the works or are they going to platoon Blum and Bellhorn?
July 19, 2006 at 12:29 pm
An article at mlb.com says …
Outfielder Ben Johnson will head to Portland for some rehab starts beginning Wednesday.
Johnson has been out since being placed on the DL on July 5 with an injured left shoulder. Johnson suffered the injury on July 1 in the last out of the day portion of a doubleheader with the Giants. Playing left field, he and Mike Cameron tangled and then ran into the wall.
http://tinyurl.com/q5y32 … which that previous link (in comment #40) implies is the beginning of the end for EY also … it’s an exciting day!
(note: sorry to be crass about VinnyC’s and EY’s status … I do appreciate their contribution and their character and their “clubhouse presence” … truely … but … no, AND, it’s time for the Padres to move on!)
July 19, 2006 at 12:33 pm
An interesting look back at recent “July trades” that Padres have made … http://tinyurl.com/n6ffa
July 19, 2006 at 12:45 pm
Steve -
Way to break the Vinny news. Best thing I’ve heard all year. Interesting to see what will happen. I just kind of hope this doesn’t mean Linebrink is on his way elsewhere for a 3B. I would think a deal is imminent, since releasing Vinny kind of tells everyone, “Hey, we really really really need a 3B now.”
July 19, 2006 at 12:47 pm
Here’s a nice list to be on …
BP’s STAT OF THE DAY
Top 5 NL Playoff Contenders
Team, Average Wins, Postseason Odds
New York Mets, 96.0, 98.81%
St. Louis Cardinals, 88.4, 77.12%
San Diego Padres, 85.4, 54.07%
Cincinnati Reds, 84.4, 44.04%
Los Angeles Dodgers, 83.2, 35.71%
July 19, 2006 at 12:49 pm
Geez… Thompson and Lieber both give up lead off BB.
Grounds crew must have lowered the mound overnight.
July 19, 2006 at 12:52 pm
The third order win percentages of the divisions are .478 (East), .448 (Central) and .497 (West). That would tend to support the assertion that the West is is the strongest division in the NL. Of course, if you’d prefer to ignore the numbers, you could always just go by what the geniuses at ESPN have to say on the subject.
July 19, 2006 at 12:52 pm
Bard just hit a 3 run shot
July 19, 2006 at 12:52 pm
Catchers who hit 4th RULE!!!!!!!!
July 19, 2006 at 12:53 pm
BARD!!!
July 19, 2006 at 12:53 pm
I guess it’s pretty obvious I grew up in Boston, eh? It’s Ok, you can pile on. We’re up 3-1 and Vinny’s out the door.
July 19, 2006 at 12:54 pm
I don’t know what Bard has done to become the player he is this year, but I do hope he continues. Every day I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop, but he keeps producing. Good work Josh!
July 19, 2006 at 12:55 pm
I called a friend of mine down there to confirm the VinnyC release … he said they’d been talking a lot about it on the radio broadcast … and that the players aren’t happy about it … wow, I like it when they get unhappy like this … 3-1 Padres and the bottom of the 1st ain’t over yet!
July 19, 2006 at 12:57 pm
It’s obvious to me that the Petco-anti-humidor was used again today
July 19, 2006 at 12:58 pm
This year…
Padres/Opponents have .033 HR/AB at PetCo.
Padres/Opponents have .030 HR/AB on the Road.
July 19, 2006 at 12:58 pm
If they do trade Linebrink for a 3B, what about using Embree for the 7th and Meredith for the 8th to set up Hoffman? I think going lefty then side-arm before Trevor would throw the hitters off a little bit in the late innings. I’d also let Brocail go because, with the exception of the first inning he pitched, he’s been pissing gasoline on a fire.
July 19, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Were the players going to be upset when he was replaced by trade? It’s a business and he wasn’t producing for a first-place club. Are they going to strike when their other BFF is released in the next week?
July 19, 2006 at 1:00 pm
Jesse - Do not even thinkof trading Ekstrom, he’s my nephew (OK, by marriage, but I’m claiming him) and when he makes it to the show, I want it to be in a Pad’s uni
July 19, 2006 at 1:01 pm
Castilla - gone!
Now trade EY and Bellhorn for a 3rd baseman
Or just let Blum play every day (and bring Ben Johnson back up)
If they want a local guy, I expect that Ty WIggington would be cheap.
July 19, 2006 at 1:01 pm
Castilla was released, Cassidy still has options so he can go back and forth between the big club and AAA I believe without having to clear waivers.
Maybe this also means a move for a 3b man is upcoming in the next few days.
July 19, 2006 at 1:03 pm
to some rumors about Josh Fields, forget it, he’s going to stick with the Sox.. you got a better chance of trading for Crede now and letting the Sox put Fields at 3B.. he can rake with the best of them..
I’m surprised that Castilla lasted longer than EY, but it was time for him to go.
July 19, 2006 at 1:04 pm
Just a note: Press notes for Today’s games say nothing more than…
“Prior to today’s game the Padres recalled RHP Mike Thompson to start this afternoon and released third baseman Vinny Castilla…”
and then gave Castilla’s stats…nothing else even hinted at in the official notes.
July 19, 2006 at 1:13 pm
Nothing would normally be hinted in there because that’s all official stuff. I was thinking you might see a news story or two on Castilla’s release..
Also funny that the story on Castilla “tutoring” Gonzalez came out for todays paper…
July 19, 2006 at 1:14 pm
Milwaukee 3 - Giants 1 2nd inn.
Is it too early to scoreboard watch?
July 19, 2006 at 1:18 pm
Thoughts on a rumor I heard on ESPN radio this morning. The Padres are apparently so enamored with the job of Bard/Bowen, they may be willing to listen to trade discussions from interested AL teams like Anaheim and Toronto.
July 19, 2006 at 1:19 pm
I heard the same rumor about shopping Kottaras for help, not PIazza.
July 19, 2006 at 1:20 pm
For Piazza, I mean. Important part of the rumor.
July 19, 2006 at 1:22 pm
Nice at bat for cameron
July 19, 2006 at 1:24 pm
Well said, Richard, on the NL West. No one is arguing the Padres are better than the Mets or that they are a serious World Series contender, but the NL West doesn’t have any awful teams. None. The NL Central has two. The NL East has one.
I don’t think I would take the Marlins roster over the Padres, because they won’t be able to afford them in a few years, and some of their rookies are over-achieving. They are not that good.
July 19, 2006 at 1:28 pm
I still don’t think Bard/Bowen will hit as well as Piazza for the rest of the year, so Piazza should only be traded for an equally potent and equally discounted 3rd base bat. I don’t see it happening.
Castilla tutoring - the real reason for gonzo’s increased power and decreased patience?
July 19, 2006 at 1:30 pm
6-1 Milwaukee now. Morris getting pounded for the Giants.
Colorado lost earlier today. They had the bases loaded in the 9th but could not tie the game.
July 19, 2006 at 1:35 pm
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Third baseman Vinny Castilla was released by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday, an unpopular move in the clubhouse and one that likely will hasten the NL West leaders’ search for a replacement before the trading deadline.
http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns
July 19, 2006 at 1:35 pm
If you haven’t read Chris Coste’s story, it’d be worth a Google search and read … he’s a real-life long-shot!
Anyway, the thought to post this was kinda enjoying the sequence of his HBP and then an HR next time up
July 19, 2006 at 1:40 pm
Thanks for the link, Kevin … and I really like the last sentence in the article …
He is the all-time major league leader by a Mexican-born player in homers, RBIs, hits (1,880), doubles (349) and runs scored (900).
… that’s a decent bottom line for Vinny Castilla … and if it’s fair to say that his legacy on the Padres is Adrian Gonzalez, well, then, it’s obvious that us Padre fans have a lot to be appreciative of as well!
July 19, 2006 at 1:42 pm
Is that because Fernando Valenzuela didn’t get enough at-bats or play in Coors?
July 19, 2006 at 1:48 pm
Trade rumored to be complete pending MLB offices approval:
Joe Crede to San Diego Padres in exchange for Dave Roberts and two minor league pitchers, RHP Jared Wells and RHP Chris Jaile
July 19, 2006 at 1:50 pm
Wow, Roberts has been really valuable this season. We would not have a leadoff hitter, if that trade is made.
July 19, 2006 at 1:50 pm
That rumor can’t be true. I can’t imagine the White sox promoting a rookie in the middle of a playoff drive. Besides, Dave Roberts showed last year that LF is his best position and chicago is looking more for a ture CF, right?
July 19, 2006 at 1:51 pm
EY can be our leadoff man (JK)
Yeah, that rumor doesn’t have the ring of truth to me. Anyone else heard that anywhere?
July 19, 2006 at 1:51 pm
They are looking for a true CF, but playing CF in their park is easier than Petco, and they are kind of desperate for a CF. Just throwing that out there. I have no idea if the rumor is true or not.
July 19, 2006 at 1:52 pm
Interesting trade rumor for Crede - who the Jimmy would play LF then, at least until Johnson is back?
P Mac or Knott???
July 19, 2006 at 1:53 pm
I am not sure what to make of that rumor. I like cashing in on Roberts while his value is high, same with Wells, but what bugs me besides the leadoff issue, is that Crede is a FA after the season, isn’t he? How much of a shot would we have to resign him? I would either bat Giles or Barfield leadoff if this deal happens.
July 19, 2006 at 1:55 pm
My guess is that if it happens then we will see a Sledge/Johnson or a PMac/Johnson platoon.
July 19, 2006 at 1:56 pm
Forgot about Sledge. Knott’s been really hot recently in portalnd. 21 home runs now for him
July 19, 2006 at 2:02 pm
If a deal was done (Awaiting league approval) Wouldn’t Roberts be sitting instead of playing?
July 19, 2006 at 2:02 pm
See … Mike shoulda never plunked that guy! 3-3 tie in top o’ 6th.
July 19, 2006 at 2:03 pm
Wow, lively message board this afternoon. Like Vinny, but glad to see his go. Shows Padres are committed, at least somewhat. I wonder who has to tell him, KT or Boch. Hard job. You gotta keep the doctor and linebrink. Moving them is messing with good team chem. Vanilla Mike, you got to give him credit, going up and down and doing the job. Can’t somebody find a sopt for this guy?
July 19, 2006 at 2:04 pm
I agree Lurker, but stranger things have happened. If we see EY in the game all of a sudden with no explanation, then something may be up.
July 19, 2006 at 2:05 pm
After 5 1/2 innings, here’s the pitching details …
Pitches-strikes - J Lieber 85-55; M Thompson 88-47.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Lieber 6-7; M Thompson 8-7.
Batters faced - J Lieber 20; M Thompson 28.
… not a *great* outing by Thompson, but very credible!
July 19, 2006 at 2:05 pm
Wow…
I really like the thought of Crede at 3rd but I’m just not sure I would get rid of Roberts yet. I mean I know he isn’t a franchise player or anything but he is such a spark plug. I’m not his biggest fan or anything but that seems like an awful big part to take off of a playoff team.
