Should it bother me that Brian Giles is ranked 75th in the NL in ISO among 90 qualifiers, behind the likes of Jamey Carroll and Jack Wilson? Yeah, maybe. But I think I’ll just focus on the fact that, for the second season in a row, the Padres will head to the All-Star break leading the division. Imagine how well they’ll be doing when Giles gets on a roll.
Fire up a pot of coffee and enjoy the first-half finale, as the Padres go for the sweep in the nation’s capital. Rock on!

Giles is still solid, just not what he used to be. I know for the traditionalist Bochy this would never happen, but I move Giles up in the order. So it would look something like:
Giles (383/363) OBP/SLG
Roberts (361/417)
Piazza/Bard (346/489; 437/611)
Gonzalez (315/456)
Cameron (346/435)
Greene (323/425)
3B
2B
This team is not so hot on OBP (only the Cubs have a lower team OBP in the NL), so might as well get the best guys at it up top, and get more power in 3 spot.

Don’t forget Wimbleton, WC final, and Padres all this morning and still leaving time for the beach with the kids. That is great scheduling.
Giles is your classic declining vet. Two years from now we wonder how the hell KT ever signed the guy, a la Klesko. But right now, I agree, he’s solid.

Guys look up giles stats in April of 05, he had a down month and then bounced back, if giles continues to slump into aug then you may have a case but let the guy try to work through his slump.

Jay
I agree the pads shuld move giles up in the order but not to leadoff, just into the # 2 hole.
Robers
Giles
Piazza/Bard
Gonzalez
Cameron
Geene
3B Please not Vinny
Barfield

So does this mean there is no way that Zito becomes a Padre?

Bellhorn at third again today. Woo-hoo!
July 9, 2006 at 10:10 am
Now, that is a nice start!
July 9, 2006 at 10:13 am
Three batters, three hits, one run. The home crowd is already booing.
July 9, 2006 at 10:21 am
On the 24th pitch of the game, Patterson records his first out. Gonzalez isn’t doing anything with runners on base this year.
July 9, 2006 at 10:21 am
Federer wins pretty handily, now on to the second sports treat this morning, padre baseball and already a run in. Go Pads!
Check out this article about a female ump ib double A. Hope it works out for her. I guess pro umps make $357 a game but have to pay their on hotel. That bits. Umps probably know every cheap hotel in every major league city.

Khalil hits a weak popup. Two down. Don’t tell me we’re going to let yet another pitcher off the hook here.
July 9, 2006 at 10:25 am
Ugg! 3 LOBs.
July 9, 2006 at 10:25 am
back to the LAT saduko.
July 9, 2006 at 10:25 am
Nothing. We had bases loaded, nobody out and couldn’t push a run across against a guy who was visibly struggling (the pitching coach came out and they had someone warming up in the bullpen). That is just terrible.
July 9, 2006 at 10:31 am
And Hensley serves up a three-run jack to Nick Johnson. If we lose this one, you can pretty much pin it on the offense’s complete inability to execute with runners in scoring position.
July 9, 2006 at 10:45 am
Patterson out already. Must be injured. Lets hope Clay settles down.
July 9, 2006 at 10:53 am
Did matty V just say woody and Ballsley in a sentance? Somebody pointed to the fact that the Nationals have Go Nats in large letters at the entrance to RFK. Go Nats, Woody, Balsly, it is a manly game.

I am watching on MLB Innings, so have the WDC broadcast. Their announcers are pretty good, though they keep having kids do the announcers. It would be cute if the Padres were winning.
3 pop ups with the bases loaded. Interesting move with Bray. With the ASB coming, you can use starters or most of the staff, point made by the announcers.
July 9, 2006 at 11:08 am
Fr already leading 1 nothing on a PK.
July 9, 2006 at 11:14 am
Clay just had a nice inning. Nats already have guys warming up; looks like they will do 2-3 innings a pitcher or so, unless someone is in the groove.
July 9, 2006 at 11:44 am
Tremendous play by Bard to grab that wild pitch and throw out Vidro at first on the strikeout.
July 9, 2006 at 11:49 am
Damn. Should’ve put ‘em away when we had the chance. Not the best way to go into the ASB.
July 9, 2006 at 11:53 am
Looks like the Padres are taking another Sunday off.
July 9, 2006 at 11:56 am
On the bright side, Khalil has his BA up to .242 with that hit.
July 9, 2006 at 12:02 pm
Not dead yet. Blummer with a two-run double to right-center.
July 9, 2006 at 12:25 pm
Klesko’s in the broadcast booth. He’s been taking batting practice for a couple of weeks and just started taking grounders and making throws. Today he threw pain-free for the first time. Klesko says he’s hoping to be back later this month.
July 9, 2006 at 12:26 pm
Gonzalez may be the slowest man in baseball. Stanton has him picked off first, Johnson drops the ball and still throws him out at second.
July 9, 2006 at 12:27 pm
And Khalil promptly singles. Of course.
July 9, 2006 at 12:49 pm
Cordero in for the 2-inning save opportunity. Barfield leads off with a double to left-center. He’s 13-for-22 on the current road trip.
July 9, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Standup triple for Roberts. Down 7-6, still only one out. Cordero’s the best they’ve got. C’mon, guys.
July 9, 2006 at 12:56 pm
Terrible at-bat for Cameron. Chasing sliders all over the place.
July 9, 2006 at 12:57 pm
I believe that a K is usually not worse than other kinds of outs, but there are times, Mike, when you’ve got to shorten up and put the XXXXXX ball in play.
July 9, 2006 at 1:00 pm
Good news is that Cordero threw 29 pitches that inning and he still has to work the ninth. Still, so many missed opportunities…
July 9, 2006 at 1:02 pm
Then again, with Cassidy in the game, it may not matter.
July 9, 2006 at 1:06 pm
It’s going to be hard to decide what hurt the worst if we lose this game. Having 3 consecutive bad at-bats in the first with the bases loaded, Clay continuing to hang pitches, Gonzalez, of all men in the world, being picked off, or Cameron’s inability to even make contact in the 8th.
Or Cassidy giving back the runs. After getting ahead 0-2.
July 9, 2006 at 1:15 pm
Dear Mr. Cordero:
Don’t go there.
Regards,
Khalil Greene
July 9, 2006 at 1:15 pm
UNNNH!
July 9, 2006 at 1:19 pm
Piazza pinch hits. First pitch from Cordero will be #50 for him.
July 9, 2006 at 1:20 pm
That’s so GD awesome.
July 9, 2006 at 1:20 pm
And pitch #51 is absolutely crushed. Despite our best efforts, we’ve got the lead, 10-9.
July 9, 2006 at 1:21 pm
The game is on TV downstairs, but I daren’t leave my computer and Gamecast.
July 9, 2006 at 1:23 pm
I know Frank Robinson doesn’t have much to work with this year and his guys have been worked very hard of late, but his bullpen usage confuses the heck out of me. Not that I’m complaining.
July 9, 2006 at 1:30 pm
Linebrink on to close. Looking for his second career save.
July 9, 2006 at 1:33 pm
Scotty carves ‘em up for the save. Wicked! Awesome, awesome game. What a great way to end the first half!
July 9, 2006 at 2:47 pm
Amazing to give up 9 runs, two three run jacks AND a two run jack and still win. I don’t get sticking with Cordero after he was getting beaten up. The long 8th killed him. We could have scored 16 runs today, but scored just enough. St Louis has a WP of .547, the Padres .545, battling for the second best mark in the NL. I just hope they keep it going. I don’t care if the national media ignores us, just keep winning.
July 9, 2006 at 2:49 pm
The main dark cloud on the horizon is Bellhorn 0-4 and a few shots past him at third. If Bochy was looking for a reason to go back to Vinny, today was that day. Hopefully Sandy has told Bochy he HAS to sit Vinny for a while. Maybe Bochy just wanted Vinny to crack .600 on the OPS for pride’s sake.
July 9, 2006 at 3:22 pm
What a great win! Down 7-2 and they came back! Pads go into the ASB 8 games over.
Isn’t Piazza great? I love having that guy on the team — it’s like instant credibility. And him or Bard coming off the bench to PH — either one is a great option.
July 9, 2006 at 5:16 pm
Record and standings at ASB:
2006: 48-40, 2.0
2005: 47-41, 5.5
2004: 47-41, 2.0 out
2003: 35-61, 23.0 out
2002: 35-53, 19.0 out
2001: 41-47, 10.5 out
2000: 38-49, 12.5 out
Very consistent over the last three years; let’s hope we have a more solid second half than in ‘04 and ‘05.
