IGD: Padres @ Giants (1 May 06)
Mon, May 1, 2006by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:15 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4SD
matchup: Jake Peavy (1-3, 5.17 ERA) vs Jamey Wright (2-1, 3.34 ERA)
previews: Padres.com | SI.com | ESPN
The Padres play the first of two against the Giants at Phone Company Park. Time to feign enthusiasm for Barry Bonds’ pursuit of history. Does anyone outside of San Francisco even care if the guy passes Babe Ruth or Hank Aaron at this point?

I am sooooooo jonesing from a Padre win tonight. A well played game with hitting and Jake on his game, culminating in victory! Come on Pads, erase a bad April with some good baseball.

Phone Company Park, thats a good one, Jeff.
God, lord in heaven, less then 6 hours away from National Pray Day, please don’t have Barry tie or break Ruth’s HR tonight.
Didn’t bonds break Mark M, record against the Padres?
May 1, 2006 at 6:49 pm
Ok, we are safe, I see that Barry would have to hit at least six more HRs tonight to break Ruths (714) record.
Bonds didn’t break McGwire’s record of 70 HRs against the Padres, thank God. We did serve up number 69 from Chuck Mc Elroy who was pitching for the Padres at the time, although I can’t remember him.
Bonds broke McGwire’s HR record against none other then CHP who was in the employ of the Dodgers at the time.
Woody gave up the first HR to Barry that 2001 season and Schilling gave up number 23 and 24 playing for the Snakes.
Little did we know Barry was on the juice, but still he can hit.

Is it wrong to enjoy seeing Barry get drilled like that? As far as I’m concerned, if you hold your hands in the strike zone you’re asking for it.
May 1, 2006 at 8:06 pm
Not sure if it’s wrong, but it’s wrong to throw at Giles when Barry just got clipped by a guy working inside. That’s complete BS. Peavy ought to get his money’s worth next time.
May 1, 2006 at 8:15 pm
All I know is, Wright has pretty much fallen apart since nailing Giles.
May 1, 2006 at 8:16 pm
Doesn’t Rob Bowen look like actor Liev Schreiber?? (he was in The Manchurian Candidate) and a few other movies
May 1, 2006 at 8:18 pm
Hmmm…hit Giles..give up 7 runs… I bet Giles will take getting hit every game…
May 1, 2006 at 8:18 pm
I love it. We don’t even need to retaliate for hitting Giles, 7 runs is payback enough.
May 1, 2006 at 8:20 pm
Geoff!
I told you not to panic, dude! It’s May! It’s May!
May 1, 2006 at 8:22 pm
Way to go Alou! Throw at a guy for a totally bogus reason and start a 7 run rally.
May 1, 2006 at 8:23 pm
Cool, seven runs. When was that last time that happened. Didn’t see Bonds get plunked or Giles, but hell, this is fun. Now lets see how Peavy pitches with a lead.
BTW, what happened to Matt Vascursion and who is that Steve guy working Padre channel 4?
May 1, 2006 at 8:34 pm
Yikes, I hope Khalil didn’t break anything on that play at the plate.
May 1, 2006 at 8:35 pm
He got a pretty good shot on the catcher with that slide…
May 1, 2006 at 8:36 pm
Bowen looking good. I’m guessing he’ll get the playing time now that Mirabelli is gone and Bard will be the third guy?
May 1, 2006 at 8:48 pm
I think Bard is more of a defensive guy so he’ll probably be the late inning guy.
Nice to see the offense continuing to hit. Are they really that happy to get out of Petco? Or is Wright just this bad?
May 1, 2006 at 8:57 pm
Geez, Cameron made that look almost routine.
May 1, 2006 at 9:38 pm
I meant what I said in the comments section yesterday…Cameron is an awesome defender, truly…and he just has that “other gear”, where you think he is going full speed and then he accelerates. If only he didn’t K so much…
May 1, 2006 at 9:49 pm
Rich, you nailed it. I don’t think I’ve had this much fun watching a guy play the outfield in a Pads uni since Finley left.

Kotsay rocked; I never liked the trade, but that was a while ago. Nice win.
May 1, 2006 at 10:32 pm
Good call, Jay, Kotsay did rock.
May 2, 2006 at 6:27 am
I loved Kotsay too — thought he was a gamer.
Here’s BA’s review of the Mirabelli trade.

A couple of Boston stories on the Mirabelli thing. Not really anything juicy (other than the fact Mirabelli requested a trade last week), but they’re interesting.

I listened to WEEI briefly on the way home from work last night. Had the opportunity to hear a few Sox fans call in — they are excited about getting Mirabelli back.
Almost as excited as I am about getting rid of him. Glad the Pads were able to get what could be a serviceable reliever (Meredith). I’m also happy that the Yanks stepped in and drove up the price a little.
May 2, 2006 at 8:31 am
Boston can’t even get Clay Hensley’s name correctly. How hard is it to double check that fact?
Nice to see Jake claimed the inside off Bonds. Step back, Mister.
Go Padres for the sweep.

Didi
Thanks for pointing that out — I was wondering who that article was talking about!
