IGD: Padres @ Cubs (12 May 06)
Fri, May 12, 2006by Geoff Young
first pitch: 11:20 a.m., PT
television: none
matchup: Woody Williams (3-1, 3.12 ERA) vs Angel Guzman (0-2, 7.20 ERA)
previews: Padres.com
Good to see the real Jake Peavy finally arrive on Thursday. In case you missed it, he fanned a career high 13 batters against Milwaukee, en route to an 8-5 victory to close the homestand. San Diego is now just a game out of first place in the NL West, with a 19-16 record — same as last season after 35 games.
The Padres kick off a nine-game road trip through Chicago, Arizona, and Seattle with a Friday morning affair against the Cubs. Woody Williams looks to continue his hot start, and the Pads hope to keep the May magic alive. They have won 32 of their last 38 games played in the month dating back to last year.
Winning is so much more fun than losing.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Jimmy Wynn, the Toy Cannon. A great, yet frequently overlooked and underrated ballplayer. I love arguing with Garvey fans who like to point out the Garv’s MVP award as evidence of his greatness, whereupon I promptly roll out the Toy Cannon’s numbers that year which show him to be much better than Garvey even before you factor in the defensive difference between 1B and CF. Here’s to Jimmy Wynn!
May 12, 2006 at 11:10 am
The Padres have been on a roll ever since… I went up there with the Congress…and solved that thing.
And yes, Jimmy Wynn was a terrific player. One of the “next Willie Mays” types who’s underrated due to the comparison to Willie.
May 12, 2006 at 11:19 am
Thanks, Lance, for helping Congress solve that thing. It’s been bugging me for a while now.
May 12, 2006 at 11:41 am
Jimmy Wynn was great. But Steve Garvey hit the biggest home run in Padres history. Advantage: Gavey.
May 12, 2006 at 11:45 am
Okay, I know that if Greene had only done what Vinny managed, we’d have another run. But right now I’m violently anti-Vinny. At most he should be facing LHP.
May 12, 2006 at 11:52 am
Does this no television on day games business irritate you guys as much as it does me? I’m fortunate enough to be able to watch TV at work but they never show the day games. The worst part is I work for Cox so I have no one else to blame.
May 12, 2006 at 11:53 am
Kevin - are you in DS#2?
Jimmy Wynn … http://www.baseball-reference.com/w/wynnji01.shtml … career .366 OBP + .436 SLG (= .802 OPS) … 436 + .507 = .943
Steve Garvey … http://www.baseball-reference......st01.shtml … career .329 OBP + .446 SLG (= .775 OPS) … best season = .353 + .499 = .852
… Advantage: Wynn.
We have *GOT* to get Garvey’s name off that wall!!!
May 12, 2006 at 11:55 am
TW - I’m with ya! At least get Vinny out of the #6 spot! He’s makin’ too many outs with too little pop … down, if not out!
May 12, 2006 at 11:56 am
Lance … I’m curious what this “Congress” thing is … any chance you can do something about Garvey’s name on the OF wall???
(GY - I’ve got a comment posted in need of “moderation”)
May 12, 2006 at 11:57 am
Woody shows the hitters how it’s done, one day after Peavy does the same.
May 12, 2006 at 11:59 am
Woody is hurt running the bases.
May 12, 2006 at 12:03 pm
Bochy was upset that it was ruled a ground rule double too early because the outfielder found the ball in the ivy. If the ump had not called it a ground rule double, Williams would have scored easily, even though he was hobbling. So we should have had a run.
May 12, 2006 at 12:04 pm
this will be interesting to see what the PAdres do. they might need an extra arm and somone should go down (bench?/Brazelton) to make room for one?
May 12, 2006 at 12:06 pm
The Cubs announcers have clarified the rule: If the ball is the ivy, even if it is visible, the OF’er can call the play dead and it’s a double.
May 12, 2006 at 12:07 pm
Brazelton was already sent down . .. How badly is Woody hurt? All I have is Gameday . . . Is it a hammy or something?
May 12, 2006 at 12:08 pm
Is the game on WGN today or on the MLB extra innings package?
May 12, 2006 at 12:08 pm
LM: Sorry dude, I don’t have the ability to get your comment out of moderation right now; maybe I need to adjust the number of links folks can include in their comments? Seems like spam hasn’t been much of an issue.
That stinks about Woody. Hopefully it’s nothing too serious.
May 12, 2006 at 12:12 pm
Mark O.
I don’t think the game is on WGN today, but Sunday’s game definitely is. I’ve got my calendar marked!
May 12, 2006 at 12:15 pm
I’m following on ESPN.com so would also appreciate a Woody update when someone gets it…
May 12, 2006 at 12:18 pm
I’m following on yahoo stat tracker…was going to go home and eat lunch and watch the game..but if isn’t on…

Just checked on http://www.cubs.com
Today’s game — CSN Chicago
Tomorrow — CSN Chicago & MLB TV
Sunday — WGN, MLB TV
May 12, 2006 at 12:24 pm
That means it’s probably on the baseball package for directtv…
May 12, 2006 at 12:28 pm
Youtube has to be one of the best things ever. That was great.
That’s the type of stuff that never happens in NY or Boston. Sutcliffe is totally hysterical.
May 12, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Hey..Vinny got an RBI..
May 12, 2006 at 12:30 pm
Piazza 2-2. That’s nice . . .
May 12, 2006 at 12:34 pm
How about Dave Roberts nearly hitting .300 for the season so far?
May 12, 2006 at 12:39 pm
check out the Padres site:
http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com.....sp?c_id=sd
and the first picture of Woody. Is that his knuckle ball grip? Looks like it.
May 12, 2006 at 12:40 pm
I’m watching on extra innings package. But I have to go to work soon.
May 12, 2006 at 12:41 pm
certainly looks like it would be..
May 12, 2006 at 12:47 pm
loretta doesnt touch that ball I bet..
May 12, 2006 at 12:53 pm
Gameday just gave an update:
“San Diego Padres pitcher Woody Williams left the game due to an injured leg. “
May 12, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Piazza 3-3 with another RBI..
May 12, 2006 at 12:54 pm
Piazza!!!
May 12, 2006 at 12:56 pm
Man there are showers all over Chicago, I hope this game goes less than 9 especially if we hold the lead.
May 12, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Wynn was only a dodger for two years, Garvey was a dodger for 14. Big, BIG advantage to Wynn. I was at the game when Garvey hit that ball, too, and I guess I should be more grateful, but I just despise him, the same way I despise the dodgers. He’s inextricably linked to them in my mind, despite 1984. ymmv.
May 12, 2006 at 1:04 pm
RE: the Garvinator… I’m with you, Pat. I’ve already volunteered to Geoff to particpate in a wee-hours covert action to remove that #6 from Petco.
Oh, damn, bet the NSA is making a note of this.
May 12, 2006 at 1:06 pm
Chicago guy live blogging the game says Williams left due to a “strained left calf”:
http://tinyurl.com/qjuey
May 12, 2006 at 1:08 pm
I’m in with you guys who want to form a late night team to remove the 6 from Petco…
May 12, 2006 at 1:11 pm
For those of you who just felt the shock of seeing Jon Adkins warming up.. there were transactions today:
“Placed C Rob Bowen on the 15-day disabled list with a left thumb sprain and recalled OF/1B Paul McAnulty from Triple-A Portland; Outrighted RHP Dewon Brazelton to Triple-A Portland and recalled RHP Jon Adkins from Portland.” Padres.com
May 12, 2006 at 1:20 pm
I would also talk the talk Michael Barrett (even though I have you on a fantasy team) when you’re down big to dave roberts
May 12, 2006 at 1:27 pm
Did I mention how much I like May?
May 12, 2006 at 1:33 pm
Pat … my mileage does *NOT* vary … well said … I, too, saw *the* HR … it was a *GREAT* moment … HOF’s and retired jersey’s are for more than just great moments … Garvey is BLUE!!!
I’ll say it again … I’m convinced that it can be done … and I think that the best way to get it done is via Garvey himself … he needs to declare himself a Dodger and demand that the Padres remove his number from their OF wall … I think he could be convinced of the win-win nature of a such a move!
May 12, 2006 at 1:38 pm
Maybe we could agree to just retire his name and # combo. “No other Steve Garvey’s will ever wear #6 for the Padres”
May 12, 2006 at 1:43 pm
dprat: Thanks for the support. And I’d like to add I have no knowledge whatsoever of any attempts past, present or future to remove anyone’s number from Petco.
LM: Right on, Brother. Garvey is as Blue as they come. I like your idea. I’ve never liked the idea of the Padres taking it down; it would show a lack of character to renege on something like that, but if Garvey asks for it. Perhaps we should start a letter writing campaign to him.
May 12, 2006 at 1:50 pm
Can’t say that I am impressed with Adkins, 4 hits now in 1.1 innings. Why wasn’t Sikorski brought up again? It’s not like we didn’t have a 40-man spot open.
May 12, 2006 at 1:57 pm
Adkins has pitch’d well enough to get a W
Bleh … it’s not obvious that the “Win” stat is much better than the “Hold” stat … but I’m pretty sure you have to get an out to get a “Win” (note that I did not say you have to retire a batter … which would be a good caveat to add the “W” scoring criteria, if you ask me!)
May 12, 2006 at 2:07 pm
This is funny enough to pass along … http://www.saintsbaseball.com/news/?id=4387 … I got it from WC @ BP …
May 12, 2006 at 2:20 pm
Adrian Gonzalez … HR #2 … Yahoo says “deep right” … and following a Vinny double … in my face!
May 12, 2006 at 2:23 pm
According to radio….Gonzalez ball hit in the seats in right and bounced out onto the street… Vinny got a double on bloop down the line that hit off the end of the outfielders glove.
May 12, 2006 at 2:26 pm
from that Chicago Tribune guy…
For the love of George Clooney, I have to agree with some on the board who wondered what Sutcliffe was apologizing for. You notice they cut his microphone only when he implied that the San Diego market was too small for Matt Vasgersian. It’s not like he said he wanted to kiss Mud Grant.
ummm, yeah…in SD, we aren’t used to people being on the air drunk, that’s all…
May 12, 2006 at 2:27 pm
MO - whew, thanks … all’s right with the world … even Vinny is experiencing May Magic … a wonderful thing!
May 12, 2006 at 2:31 pm
Why PH for Cassidy … versus leave him in to close out the 9th?
May 12, 2006 at 2:39 pm
Padres about to set an ALL-TIME Major League record today
http://www.baseball-almanac.co.....ords.shtml
May 12, 2006 at 2:45 pm
how many have they left on? Thats one of those finite possible records…max possible in a nine inning affair being 27…so a record of 18 is exactly 2/3 of the possible max
May 12, 2006 at 2:49 pm
The Padres have only left 11 on base…the record is 18 for a team…
May 12, 2006 at 2:50 pm
Nick,
Team LOB is NOT the sum of individual LOB. So altho’ the Padres individually have combined for 22 LOB, they are only credited with a TEAM LOB of 11, far short of the record of 20.
May 12, 2006 at 2:51 pm
Nick - they are not breaking the LOB record.
If they load the bases with no out, and the next three hitters all strike out, then each of them gets 3 LOB next to their name in the boxscore, which adds up to 9 LOB, but as a team they only left 3 on base.
May 12, 2006 at 2:52 pm
he beat me to it
May 12, 2006 at 2:52 pm
May day … May day … put up another W!
Adkins will get the W … but I sure wish more scorekeepers would exercise their option and give the W to Sweeney!
May 12, 2006 at 2:55 pm
According to Yahoo, Sweeney has been credited with the W. Good for the official scorer! (And how often do you get to say that?)
May 12, 2006 at 2:55 pm
Eric,
you explained it better
May 12, 2006 at 2:57 pm
I hope that is official…Sweeney deserves that W.
This could be a costly victory depending on Woody’s situation…*crossing fingers*
May 12, 2006 at 2:59 pm
11-1 in May. You’re right Geoff, winning is so much more fun than losing!
May 12, 2006 at 3:23 pm
Here’s somebody faster than Freddy Guzman … http://tinyurl.com/osylg … 9.76 for the 100m … way cool!
May 12, 2006 at 3:47 pm
Nice win, but am confused why they did not bring up another pitcher. The only rested relievers are Hoffman and Linebrink; kind of spent the pen in this one (pitches):
Sweeney: 49
Adkins: 38
Cassidy: 36
Embree: 23
So, let’s say CY has a tough game tomorrow (even when he is good, he throws a lot of pitches), how are we going to get to the 9th? Maybe magic May will get CY into the 8th or 9th, but ought you count on that? Is this a basic roster management thing that they just screwed up?
I don’t fully understand the option system, but there must be someone at the AAA level that could be brought up for this road trip without burning too many options. I would have even kept Dewon around; sure he got hit hard by Milwaukee, but he had been decent otherwise since being in the bullpen. If this costs us a game, I think someone should be smacked. Seems needlessly stupid.
May 12, 2006 at 3:59 pm
BTW, as long as we are planning clandestine activities, I think it would be a good idea to get into the clubhouse and change every calendar to read “May” for every month.
May 12, 2006 at 5:26 pm
No more June 1st … it will become May 32nd … I love it!
May 12, 2006 at 5:32 pm
According to Padres.com Woody has a torn calf muscle and is out indefinitely.
May 12, 2006 at 5:42 pm
Jonathan, at pdxbeavers.com, posted this link … http://www.newbergreport.com/Reports.aspx?ID=77 … a Rangers web site, with “A look back at John Hudgins and Vincent Sinisi” … good intro to the new members of the Padres’ org.
May 12, 2006 at 5:46 pm
I s’pose Mike Thompson is the most deserving of the Beaver’s starters to get a callup to fill in for Woody … perhaps a reach to Carillo? Eh, that feels premature … hence dangerous.
What’s the lates on Estes?
Go with a 4-man rotation?
May 12, 2006 at 6:07 pm
A couple of interesting notes out of Philly … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260512117 … Shane Victorino is 5-for-5 since Rowand busted his nose … and Cole Hamels had an interesting MLB debut … he’s a guy we’ll be hearing a bunch about!
May 12, 2006 at 6:39 pm
Embedded in the Newberg Report (link above) is this nugget … http://www.dickiethon.com/ecza.....ldiary.htm … a look inside the AFL from John Hudgins’ viewpoint … a very worthwhile read!

That really sucks, because he is such a likeable player, and you had to love the season he was putting together. I apologize to all the fans. This morning, when scanning the “Under the knife” section on BP, I was thinking “Gee, the Pads have been pretty lucky with the injuries.” Yes Cameron and Klesko, but nothing horrid. Then this.
