According to the U-T and padres.com, Williams threw two knuckleballs yesterday — one produced a strikeout and the other resulted in a weak foul.

BP wrote something on Tim Stauffer in “Future Shock” talking about make or break prospects from the 2003 draft
“Tim Stauffer, rhp, Padres (No. 4, $750,000)
While he was the fourth overall pick in the draft, we need to judge him more as a second-round pick, as Stauffer admitted to a shoulder problem after being selected and agreed to a bonus roughly one quarter of what he would have received if healthy. While he didn’t need surgery, he’s never shown the same stuff as he did in college at Richmond, and he’s gotten worse across the board at each higher level:
Level IP ERA H/9 W/9 K/9
Hi A 35.1 1.78 7.1 2.3 7.7
AA 51.1 2.63 9.8 2.3 5.8
AAA 156.2 4.32 9.9 2.5 6.5
MLB 81.0 5.33 10.2 3.2 5.4
His 15-game stint in the big leagues last year earned him a return engagement at Triple-A Portland. He’s one of those guys who is going to get plenty of looks and chances because of what he once was, and he could still be shuttling back and forth between Triple-A and the majors ten years from now if he wanted to. Sounds like John Wasdin. ”

Would Woody have wafted more wobblers without so much wind? The breeze was whipping, that can’t be too good for a knuckleball.
Alliteration aside, we went from having one of the best outfield defenses to one of the worst with a single pulled muscle. I like Sledge, but he doesn’t look comfortable in LF. Young was terrible. Roberts is badly miscast in CF.
April 12, 2006 at 9:00 am
ouch that’s a slap in the face… anyonne.. look at mlb.com on the rotating front part of it.. there’s a picture of Ramon Hernandez in a SD uniform.. c”mon find a current padre to put on that board
April 12, 2006 at 9:44 am
I thought wind was a good thing for a knuckleball — the more the wind whips, the more it moves. Of course, I suppose it depends on which way the wind was whipping . . . wow.
He only threw 68 pitches . . . maybe if we’ll see more knucklers if he gets up in the 90-100 range.
April 12, 2006 at 10:08 am
It seems like high wind would tend to knock a knuckleball off-target a long way from the plate. Instead of being fooled at the last second, the batter never thinks it’s anywhere near the strike zone. The ball doesn’t have the velocity or rotation to fight through the breeze. But I could be totally wrong.
April 12, 2006 at 10:11 am
Double for Sledge. Nice.
I love Gameday . . .I’m not going to get any work done the rest of the day.
April 12, 2006 at 10:11 am
Sounds like Giles was robbed.
April 12, 2006 at 10:12 am
looks like it — gameday has the ball at the 410 mark in CF
April 12, 2006 at 10:20 am
Yup, not much work done for me either this morning.
April 12, 2006 at 10:25 am
I think we can probably say now . . . Kahlil Greene . . . en fuego
April 12, 2006 at 10:43 am
Greetings all!
Leave it to me to start watching when we walk the first two hitters in an inning…
April 12, 2006 at 10:48 am
How does Mike Jacobs steal 2 bases in one inning? Is Young just not paying attention to him, or is Piazza’s arm really that bad?
April 12, 2006 at 10:51 am
My guess is that it is a combination of both Piazza’s poor arm and Young being slower to the plate.
April 12, 2006 at 11:14 am
Marlins radio announcers said Jacobs stole third off Young.
April 12, 2006 at 11:22 am
Hey Piazza threw someone out!
April 12, 2006 at 11:33 am
That (Piazza throwing out Uggla) will stop the impunity …

April 12, 2006 at 12:20 pm
AGon’s having quite a game. I do hope the kid keeps this up, it will take some of the sting off of our pitching. Anyone watching, has CYoung looked as good as his numbers?
April 12, 2006 at 12:21 pm
Whassup with Piazza doing his Sweeney impersonation (ie. getting thrown out on the bases / at the plate)???
April 12, 2006 at 12:25 pm
Bruce, I’ll have to review my Tivo for ideas on how well Young is throwing. It’s a lineup with so many young kids. He seems to have gone deep in some counts.
Whassup with Piazza still being in the game? Why are we carrying 3 catchers if not to get him some rest when the game is out of reach?
April 12, 2006 at 12:27 pm
I’m really surprised that Piazza is still in there.
April 12, 2006 at 12:27 pm
Young’s done for the day, leaving up 7-0. Of course his replacement, Brian Sweeney immediately starts the 7th with two straight hits and a run aided by Sledge’s error. 7-1. Is it too early to panic with our bullpen?
April 12, 2006 at 12:27 pm
TW - agree! Put in a pinch-runner for him … even if it’s Mirabelli or Bowen!
April 12, 2006 at 12:32 pm
TW, yeah I don’t want to get carried away about Young since he is effectively facing a AAA lineup, but he’s been solid in his two starts. I guess we will know more about FLA tomorrow when Braz takes the hill. If he shuts them down, they we can temper our enthusiasm, or get wildly carried away.
April 12, 2006 at 12:38 pm
Has Trevor pitched at all yet?
April 12, 2006 at 12:41 pm
No Trevor sightings yet.
April 12, 2006 at 12:44 pm
Nick - No.
Until the sixth inning of today’s game, the Padres had committed just one error. Since then, they’ve made one error in the 6th, 7th and 8th. Weird, eh?
April 12, 2006 at 12:45 pm
Meant to say “committed one error all season”.
April 12, 2006 at 12:58 pm
Current Marlins pitcher’s last name is Resop, which spelled backwards is Poser.
Geoff, don’t say I never add anything of value to these conversations…
April 12, 2006 at 12:59 pm
Great … Piazza gets one inning of rest … eh, better than nuthin’, I s’pose …
April 12, 2006 at 1:00 pm
BG - well done! Who knew? What’s it mean?
April 12, 2006 at 1:04 pm
Any chance Linebrink is under orders to create a “save situation” for Trevor???
April 12, 2006 at 1:06 pm
Trevor paid Scottie a hundred bucks to put some runners on so he could get a save. lol
April 12, 2006 at 1:12 pm
That’s a wrap … 7-2 … Linebrink with 20 pitches in 9th (2 hits) … nice game for Adrian Gonzalez (4 hits, 2 Rs, 2 RsBI) …
April 12, 2006 at 2:07 pm
It turns out Trevor has pitched. He pitched an inning late in Saturday’s game giving up a run on 2 hits, striking out 1. No one was watching at that point so it was easy to miss.
April 12, 2006 at 3:57 pm
Wow, another win on the road. YooHoo!
April 12, 2006 at 4:25 pm
Say what you will about the Marlins, but I’ll be suprised if they finish last in the NL East.
April 12, 2006 at 5:13 pm
Well, had tickets to either giants game (tue and wed) while I’m up here and both rained out. Be nice to see the sun again in SD soon.
April 12, 2006 at 5:21 pm
As bad as our starting pitching has been (not counting yesterday and today), I’m still glad we didn’t trade for Wells … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/boxscore?gid=260412102 …

Thanks for the update LM. I, for one, cannot wait to see Carrillo. Hope he’s as good as advertised . .
Worthy of note — Kottaras hitting .375 at Mobile.
Also, Matt Bush is on LE’s roster, hasn’t played a game. I don’t know if he’s hurt or something . . .
April 13, 2006 at 8:13 am
Nick: Yes, Bush is hurt — fractured tibia will keep him out 6-8 weeks:
