According to the U-T and padres.com, Williams threw two knuckleballs yesterday — one produced a strikeout and the other resulted in a weak foul.

BP wrote something on Tim Stauffer in “Future Shock” talking about make or break prospects from the 2003 draft

“Tim Stauffer, rhp, Padres (No. 4, $750,000)

While he was the fourth overall pick in the draft, we need to judge him more as a second-round pick, as Stauffer admitted to a shoulder problem after being selected and agreed to a bonus roughly one quarter of what he would have received if healthy. While he didn’t need surgery, he’s never shown the same stuff as he did in college at Richmond, and he’s gotten worse across the board at each higher level:

    Level IP ERA H/9 W/9 K/9
    Hi A 35.1 1.78 7.1 2.3 7.7
    AA 51.1 2.63 9.8 2.3 5.8
    AAA 156.2 4.32 9.9 2.5 6.5
    MLB 81.0 5.33 10.2 3.2 5.4

His 15-game stint in the big leagues last year earned him a return engagement at Triple-A Portland. He’s one of those guys who is going to get plenty of looks and chances because of what he once was, and he could still be shuttling back and forth between Triple-A and the majors ten years from now if he wanted to. Sounds like John Wasdin. “

Would Woody have wafted more wobblers without so much wind? The breeze was whipping, that can’t be too good for a knuckleball.

Alliteration aside, we went from having one of the best outfield defenses to one of the worst with a single pulled muscle. I like Sledge, but he doesn’t look comfortable in LF. Young was terrible. Roberts is badly miscast in CF.

I thought wind was a good thing for a knuckleball — the more the wind whips, the more it moves. Of course, I suppose it depends on which way the wind was whipping . . . wow.

He only threw 68 pitches . . . maybe if we’ll see more knucklers if he gets up in the 90-100 range.

It seems like high wind would tend to knock a knuckleball off-target a long way from the plate. Instead of being fooled at the last second, the batter never thinks it’s anywhere near the strike zone. The ball doesn’t have the velocity or rotation to fight through the breeze. But I could be totally wrong.

How does Mike Jacobs steal 2 bases in one inning? Is Young just not paying attention to him, or is Piazza’s arm really that bad?

  14. Bruce
    Posted April 12, 2006 at 10:51 am | Permalink

My guess is that it is a combination of both Piazza’s poor arm and Young being slower to the plate.

Bruce, I’ll have to review my Tivo for ideas on how well Young is throwing. It’s a lineup with so many young kids. He seems to have gone deep in some counts.

Whassup with Piazza still being in the game? Why are we carrying 3 catchers if not to get him some rest when the game is out of reach?

Young’s done for the day, leaving up 7-0. Of course his replacement, Brian Sweeney immediately starts the 7th with two straight hits and a run aided by Sledge’s error. 7-1. Is it too early to panic with our bullpen? :)

TW, yeah I don’t want to get carried away about Young since he is effectively facing a AAA lineup, but he’s been solid in his two starts. I guess we will know more about FLA tomorrow when Braz takes the hill. If he shuts them down, they we can temper our enthusiasm, or get wildly carried away.
