first pitch: 10:05 a.m., PT
television: ESPN
matchup: Jake Peavy vs Chris Carpenter
preview: Yahoo!
The moment we have all been waiting for is finally upon us. For the first time since October 21, 1998, the Padres are playing a post-season game. And thanks to the brilliant minds that run our national pasttime, it will be broadcast live on local television at 10 o’clock on a Tuesday morning.
Whether you are a Cardinals fan checking out Ducksnorts to get the dirt on your team’s playoff opponent, or your team’s season has come to an end and you’re curious to find out what all the fuss is about this baseball team that some feel is not playoff worthy, or you’ve been suffering all year long (and, in some cases, much longer) with these Padres of San Diego, I bid you welcome. And I promise that that last sentence was as pretentious as it ever gets around these parts.
As we do every game, we’ll be chatting about the contest and anything else that comes to mind. The structure is pretty loose. Add something if you feel like it, don’t if you don’t. Thanks for stopping by, and enjoy your stay.
Okay, so if you work weird hours and are near a TV for this one, maybe tell us what’s happening. The pitching matchup for Game 1 has the potential to be brilliant:
Peavy vs Carpenter
Here’s how the two staff aces compare over all their starts this season.
| Pitcher | IP/GS | ERA | H/9 | BB/9 | SO/9 | HR/9 | #P/IP | GSc |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peavy | 6.77 | 2.88 | 7.18 | 2.22 | 9.58 | 0.80 | 15.6 | 61.4 |
| Carpenter | 7.32 | 2.83 | 7.61 | 1.90 | 7.95 | 0.67 | 14.1 | 61.4 |
Peavy is more of a power pitcher, which means he can be very dominant but also that he isn’t as efficient as Carpenter nor does he go as deep into games. Interesting that their average game scores are identical.
How about their best and worst starts of the season? Here is the composite of the top 10 game scores for each this year:
| Pitcher | IP/GS | ERA | H/9 | BB/9 | SO/9 | HR/9 | #P/IP | GSc |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peavy | 7.90 | 0.45 | 4.20 | 1.48 | 9.32 | 0.00 | 13.8 | 79.1 |
| Carpenter | 8.42 | 0.53 | 3.95 | 1.28 | 8.87 | 0.43 | 12.8 | 81.4 |
These are just sick numbers. Peavy’s best start of the season came June 20 at home against the Dodgers (8 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 13 SO); Carpenter’s came less than a week before (June 14) at Toronto (9 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO). If both guys are on their game, this could be a classic postseason pitchers duel. Slight advantage to Carpenter.
And their 10 worst starts?
| Pitcher | IP/GS | ERA | H/9 | BB/9 | SO/9 | HR/9 | #P/IP | GSc |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peavy | 5.80 | 6.57 | 10.80 | 2.82 | 9.23 | 1.72 | 17.9 | 42.5 |
| Carpenter | 5.65 | 7.33 | 12.42 | 3.66 | 7.96 | 1.27 | 16.8 | 38.1 |
When these guys explode, each does it in his own way. Peavy maintains his high strikeout numbers but becomes susceptible to the gopher ball. Carpenter, on the other hand, becomes eminently hittable and loses his control. Peavy’s lows aren’t quite as low as Carpenter’s.
Peavy’s worst start: July 21 at the Mets (5 IP, 7 H, 7 R, 2 BB, 4 SO); Carpenter’s worst: April 10 at the Phillies (3.1 IP, 10 H, 8 R, 2 BB, 2 SO).
Pitchers vs Hitters
Peavy has held current Cardinals hitters to a .230/.309/.391 line over 70 at-bats. Mark Grudzielanek (.455/.455/.727 in 11 AB) and Albert Pujols (.556/.667/1.000 in 9 AB) have done the bulk of the damage.
Current Padres hitters sport a line of .255/.297/.396 against Carpenter over 149 at-bats. Joe Randa (.281/.281/.563 in 32 AB) and Brian Giles (.313/.353/.500 in 16 AB) have had marginal success, as have Mark Sweeney and Robert Fick in very small samples.
Umpire
Ed Montague will call balls and strikes in Game 1. I don’t know what stock anyone puts into umpire stats (thanks to dprat for providing the link), but here are Montague’s numbers for the year:
G Inn RA BA OBP SLG Str%
Montague 33 597.1 5.48 .281 .342 .452 .630
Montague’s run total is highest among the 61 umpires who worked 30 or more games behind the plate in 2005. The batting average and SLG are also tops, while OBP checks in at #4. The percentage of pitches that were strikes is about middle of the pack. Like I said, I don’t know how much this really comes into play, but there it is.
Numbers Don’t Lie; People Who Use Numbers Lie
Thanks to Brian G. for updating us on the status of Dave Roberts, Winning Machine, in yesterday’s comments. If you missed it (and what’s your excuse?), here’s the deal: “The Padres are 58-43 (.574) when Dave Roberts starts.” Indications are that Roberts will be in the lineup Tuesday morning. Sweet.
Handy Stuff at Padres.com
I’m trying to pack a lot of info in here today, so not much commentary on these.
- Padres facts and figures
- Padres monthly recap. Winning months were May, August, and September.
- Cardinals-Padres: Quick hits. Likes the Cards in four.
- Cards, Padres reach expectations
- Peavy ready for Game 1 assignment. I’m very excited for Peavy. I don’t think people around the country have a clue how good this guy is. If he brings his A game to the table (and he usually does), folks are in for a real treat.
Cardinals Takes
Several Cardinals bloggers have gotten together and posted a roundtable discussion of their first-round playoff series against the Padres:
- Part 1 (Viva El Birdos)
- Part 2 (CardNilly)
- Part 3 (bellyitcher)
- Part 4 (Get Up, Baby!)
- Part 5 (The Birdwatcher)
- Part 6 (Cardinals Diaspora)
Two take-home lessons: First, there is some really well-considered discussion here. Second, we need more Padres bloggers.
And of course, a Padres win this morning is mandatory. So grab a cup of coffee and hang out with us. These are good times.

From Buster Olney:
Division Series: Boston beats the White Sox, 3 games to 2; Angels beat the Yankees, 3 games to 1; Houston over Atlanta, 3 games to 2; Padres over St. Louis, 3 games to 2.
Championship Series: Angels over Boston in six games, Houston over San Diego in five games.
World Series: The Angels over the Astros in six games. The Most Valuable Player: John Lackey.
ONLY 3.5 hours ’til gametime!!!!! There’s no way I’m going to be completely focused at work today.
Thanks for the link, Geoff. D’Albenzio says “EVEN” at 2b and SS. That’s very interesting. Every other analysis I’ve read gives the Cards the edge at those positions. I think I would give the Cards edge at SS for the following reasons:
1) Eckstein: proven commodity in the playoffs, consisten performer during the season. He’s a .300 hitter in 80 postseason ABs.
2) Eckstein had a better season then Greene, plain and simple — he hit .294 and struck out only 44 times in 630 ABs. He scored 90 runs and drove in 61.
I love KG, and I really hope he comes through, but at this point, Eckstein is a better SS.
Woody, not Eaton, gets Game 3:
http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2005/10/04/sports/professional/padres/10305200201.txt
10 am start. There has got to be a TV that gets ESPN around this building somewhere. Maybe in a lab somewhere. Time to start hunting.
Remember in 98, watching the Pads beat the Atl in a Lab at Qualcomm. Tiny little TV and about 50 Eng geeks trying not to make too much noise. Ah, the salad days.
in 84, remember watching every pitch at Montys at SDSU, another early game, with a beer or five in my hand. Thats when Montys served beer. (PS, i did manage to graduate)
My daughter’s math teacher has promised to have the game on TV. Bless his heart.
Of course, my wife, and probably yours, is oblivious to this important moment in SD sports history and she’s at home with two TVs.
I feel a sore throat coming on, Cough, cough.
PM – you must be contageous … cough, cough … I think I can hang on for about another hour and 40 minutes … cough … cough
Woody is starting game 3? We have four-five better starters than Williams…
Crap, the TVs in the meeting rooms don’t get anything. Don’t the Eexecs at corporate headquarters understand whats going on? Oh, wait, they are in Ohio and thier teams didn’t make the playoff, although the Indians came close.
Is there a sports bar in RB? Oh right, next to the shuffle board courts.
The pisser is I’m facing north and can’t get radio either. Guess its Gameday and IGD. Love the IGD, but want to see the Pads introduced. At least I have a computer.
Less than 90 minutes… sorry to hear about you guys that can’t see the game. One of the joys of self-employment…I’m really busy with “meetings” from 10am till at least 1 pm today. My Thursday is looking quite crowded in the afternoon as well.
Let’s go boys…it’s time to shock the world and show that we belong.
Anybody taping the game for later use?
Keep us informed Mark, love to hear how the announcers trash the Padres, which I’m sure they will. Just like the Chargers at no chance in NE. Ha!!!
Tho’ I cursed my fate at the time, working some weekends on a project last month is now paying off BIG TIME! I’m walking outta the office in 45 minutes, driving home, and sitting my ass down in front of the TV at home – alone – no interruptions (gotta be back by 1:30, so no extra innings today, please). Damn, is it time yet? I got me them playoff butterflies…LET’S GO!
Dayn Perry at BP (one of their best writers, by the way, and also a huge Cardinal fan) has an analysis of the Padres/Cardinals series today. Here’s the last paragraph:
“Prediction
The presence of Jake Peavy, the extra day of rest and the downward spiraling of Chris Carpenter mean this is very much a series. The Pads take both of Peavy’s starts, but the other San Diego starters and that porous defense can’t keep runs off the board. St. Louis in five.”
Can I go see the game with you, Dprat?
Man, lucky you. Enjoy!
Let us know if the announcers are being down on the Padres.
I’m a bit worried about the defense. Here’s hoping Ben Johnson gets in the game. And X coming off the bench to mash the winning run in.
Getting goosebumps, already. Let’s go Padres!
Heard the cafateria has cable TV. Hurray!!! Snack time coming up. Also heard of a secret watering hole here in RB. Might be eating lunch out today.
Gee drat, must be nice. Could have easily called in sick today, didn’t cross my small mind though. Shows the rut I’m in:). Go Padres!
BTW, how pathetic is the once mighty Dodger organization? Plasche rips them a new one in the LATimes today. What happened to that once classy baseball org? Where have you gone Mr. O’Malley?
My favorite place to “vote” for individual honors (MVP, Cy Young, ROY) is at BP … here’s a pointer …
Baseball Prospectus is once again proud to host the Internet Baseball Awards.

Man…I can’t wait for this game to start. As for the prediction of Dayn Perry…I think that’s at least a fair prediction as opposed to the ones who are saying Cards in 3 games. I still think that people are overlooking how well Astacio has pitched and we very well could win both games in St. Louis.
Surprisingly…Morgan and Miller..keeping it pretty balanced in the preview..
The best broadcaster in his price-range. Joe Morgan, OTOH, well, he’s a baseball elitest so I guess he as a right to be arrogant.
Snack Time!
Okay, I’ve got the coffee fired up and a bowl of corn flakes ready to go. Bring on the baseball.
I’m glad we get Morgan and Miller. A lot of statheads give Morgan grief but I really enjoy listening to those two.
Kruk and Reynolds on baseball tonight both picking the Padres to win today.
Pads: Roberts cf, Klesko lf, Loretta 2b, Giles rf, Sweeney 1b, Hernandez c, Greene ss, Randa 3b, Peavy p
Cards: Eckstein ss, Edmonds cf, Pujols 1b, Walker rf, Sanders lf, Grudz 2b, Nunez 3b, Molina c, Carpenter p
Give Bochy credit for keeping Klesko in the #2 hole. Also, I believe this is the first time the Padres have used this particular lineup all year.
I can’t stand Morgan.
But anyway, I’m watching the game here in D.C. It’s 1 p.m., I work night, plus I’m off today anyway. But I had a wreck this morning, so I need something good to do now.
I don’t know how much I will come downstairs to give updates. Maybe Richard or dprat can carry the load.
Let’s go, Jake.
I’ll be here as well for updates..
Joe Morgan saying that he believes that the Padres do have a chance to win this series.
Morgan: “Jake Peavy is capable of cutting down on any lineup.” Damn straight he is.
Wow, a new lineup for the playoff.
Indeed, this is a new day.
Let’s play ball!
I’m at home watching, BTW. I’ll be here all morning.
Man…is there anything cooler than watching your team in the playoffs?
Well, the past couple weeks is the first time the team has all been healthy, so the lineup looks good. If the Padres do win the series, everyone will say it’s a huge upset, but this is a 90-win team that had a bunch of injuries.
Let’s get it on…
Damn, caf TV doesn’t get ESPN, its off to the watering hole, no beer, I promise. Go PAdres!
Why is Lo batting 3rd?
Roberts lines sharply to Walker in right on a breaking ball. Good swing, but one out.
I’m going to try to avoid following over here, because I’m still working on my playoff preview. But I’m one of the few writers… probably anywhere… that’s picking you guys to upset the Cardinals. So don’t make me look bad and get it done! Go Pads.
Joe Morgan– the curveball isnt’ as sharp as it should be
Joe Morgan– the curveball isnt’ as sharp as it should be
Carpenter looks beatable. His curve ball isn’t moving, and he’s missing with location.
Walk to Klesko..
Klesko walks.
C’mon boys..lets get one in the first..
Wow. How is Loretta looking in the box?
Morgan talking about Carpenter’s effect on the running game. Of course, Pads don’t run.
He doesn’t look very comfortable…his swing looks bad
Zone’s a little tight considering there’s a Cy Young candidate on the mound. That’s encouraging.
Well, if you can’t hit the ball anymore, walk. Right on Klesko!
Zone is very tight…
Easy fly to center. Loretta battled. Let’s go Gilly.
Loretta doesn’t belong in the top 3 of the batting order. Boch is a little off.
If nothing else…Carpenter has thrown a boat load of pitches here in the first
That one did break… Nothing in the first.
generous strike 3 call on Giles..considering Carpenter was all over the park with his control in that inning..
Interesting call on strike three to Giles. Looked a little low to me. Carpenter gets through the first with 23 pitches.
Giles struck out looking? How can that be?
The irony of the walk leader caught looking at ta third strike. Ouch.
Let’s go, Jake!
2 pitches..1 out…fly ball to Klesko
Anyone else wearing ‘98 gear today? I’ve got the NL Champions shirt working.
Mike, that’s because Giles generally doesn’t swing at balls out of the zone.
That last pitch to Giles was definitely low.
Geez, how did that get out? Come to Petco sometime.
Damn. A HR!
Edmonds HR to left..1-0 Cards
OUCH!!!
Good news is that Peavy looks good other than the 1 pitch..
No panic. Peavy made one bad pitch and Edmonds hammered it. Peavy has the good stuff going today. He got Pujols on a weak grounder to short and abused Walker to end the inning.
The good news is then, the Padres will be able to hit HR as well.
10 pitches, 1 HR, no balls. What did Edmond hit, a fastball? Was it a mistake pitch.
Peavy didn’t throw a ball in that inning, did he…
Looked like a fastball out over the plate and Edmonds hammered it to left..
Not sure what type of pitch, but it was pretty much down the middle and didn’t move.
C’mon Albert, keep jawing. Get tossed.
Sweeney beats out a grounder to first… looked to me like he was out.
Not over the plate…it was low & outside…a strike, but on the edge…give Edmonds credit.
Carpender is up to 27 pitches, 15 strikes, 12 balls. Glad to see us working the pitch count.
Sweeney was quite out.
Sweeney beats out a grounder to first… looked to me like he was out.
Yep, I think we caught a break there.
And we just caught another. Let’s take advantage.
Sweeney was definitely out…but good break for Ramon as Eckstein misses a line drive.. 2 on …no one out
How bout Randa playing the role of Jim Leyritz from ‘98 this year..
Carpenter seems to be finding his curve ball.
Admin note: There is, understandably, a longer than normal lag time on comments. Hang tight.
Pitching round Randa, how’s jake at the plate?
6-4-3 double play.. damn
Damn, does Randa do *anything* other than hit into DPs?
Hate to say, but that is three LOBs already. Crap!
He plays a roughly average third base.
Did Greene swing at the first pitch?
That only took Carp 12 pitches.
yes…I think Greene did swing at the first pitch.
Khalil did swing at the first pitch. I was fooled by the swing, thought it had a chance to find the gap.
Man…Peavy looks good..
Wow, Jake has yet to throw a ball. Impressive.
Book on Sanders hasn’t changed in 14 years.
Jake is on. We won’t need to score many, but we will need some.
Greene’s plate discipline has been a disappointment this year.
Peavy sounds like he’s on. Nunez just got a hit. C’mon Jake, shut ‘em down!
Nunez hit a good pitch…just slapped it through the 5.5 hole..
Greene’s number is the equivalent of Phil’s earlier in the season.
Hope he gets to look at more pitches next AB.
Greene boxes it on the ground ball but recovers to throw out the slow catcher..
Greenie bobbbles but still gets Molina. Inning over.
Efficient inning from Jake.
Ok..im switching chairs for this 1/2 inning… see if that helps us get a run.
Is there ever a reason to swing at the first pitch? Greene might be gripping under that relaxed exterior. wish he’d lighten up a bit. Not celebrating the other night really put me off.
.I just switched hats.
Roberts with another solid line drive, this one to right. He is seeing Carpenter very well.
nice line shot single for Roberts
Ok, I’ll use the mouse with my left hand.
Did I hear Miller correctly, that Carpenter has allowed just one stolen base over the past two years? Wow.
Klesko singles to right.
Another big chance..two on, 1 out.
Let’s go, Giles!
you mean Loretta
C’mon Loretta, get a hit!
I just switched to decaf.
A walk is fine . . .
Gotta love the Cardinals fans…every pitch should be called a strike.
Mark’s hanging in there
Loretta just fouled off ball four.
& ball 5.
Man, Gameday can be tedideous. Chickened out on the watering hole, but might reconsider. Keep fouling them Loretta!
Hey, another double play. We are so predictable.
god that’s sux – 53 DP
That’s why you bat Giles #3 and not the 7th best hitter in the lineup.
A freaking 5-5-3???? Crap.
Damn it. Another GiDP!
5 Lobs. that really hurts!
Man..does that suck… Loretta smokes it to 3rd and it turns into a DP. We’re going to score some runs today..we’re hitting the ball to well.
BTW..yes I do believe that switching chairs actually works…if it gets later in the game i might even change clothes.
I don’t know what’s worse, Greene batting in the third spot, Loretta, or Young. Felipe Alou is the same way with Bonds. Why would you not want your best hitter third. LaRussa gets it.
Was the runners in motion at all?
Okay, then, I’m changing hats. Whatever it takes.
Loretta fouled off ball four a couple times and then stopped our best hitter from getting a plate appearance in the inning.
I’ll give Loretta this…he hit it hard. But swinging at bad pitches prevented Giles from coming up with bases loaded, 1 out. Timne for a different hat.
Shoot, I’m going to the loo. Been holding this piss since first pitch.
Loretta battled and hit the ball hard. I can’t really get on him too much for that.
The runners were going on every 3-2 of the at bat..
single for Eckstein with 1 out..
I’m not really blaming Loretta. It’s not his fault Bochy is a dumbass.
ducksnort, dammit
Bloop double down the left field line…I don’t know how Klesko doesn’t get to this ball. 2nd and 3rd with only 1 out..
So Peavy makes a good pitch to Edmonds, and he dunks one into left field. Damn.
Look out, walker up base juiced!
WP scores one
And here come the wheels. This sucks.
Wild pitch, whose fault was that TV watchers?
This makes throwing runs away with a stupid batting order look even better.
why pitch to Walker here with 1B open?
WP was Jake, he slipped in his follow thru…bounced 4 feet in front of the plate
It’s not the batting order, it’s failure to execute.
Granted, but Bochy is the one who refused to put his players in a position where they might succeed.
Defense,defense.defense…achilles heel
How does Sanders even hit that ball? This still sucks.
unfrickinbelievable…
Damn, not looking good. Have we ever overcome a 4 run lead?
I don’t want to say it’s lucky…but The Cardinals get a bloop double and a ball off the bag at first and end up scoring 3 runs..we hit the ball on a rope with runners on and have nothing to show for it..
This sucks..
DP gets us out of the inning..a disaster.
Peavy has pitched well, but the defense behind him has not played well at all.
Point taken, Richard. OTOH, Loretta might have poked it through the left side to drive home the run.
Okay, this is going to be a little tricky. Time to score some runs and get back in the game.
All of those guys in the dugout need to be as pissed as we are and take it out on Carpenter who looks very hittable.
Giles hits a weak grounder back through the middle that Eckstein fields. Cards had the shift on.
That’s true. Still, he’s less likely to succeed than other players in the lineup and yet he’s batting 3rd.
Miller: “A real top notch first baseman would’ve gotten that ball.” You think? Yeah, I think.
Have switched again…getting desperate…it’s a Padres brown floppy hat now.
If we didn’t have bad luck..we would have no luck at all..
I hope this doesn’t sound too much like sour grapes, but Carpenter isn’t impressing me at all.
Switching to a new hat…
Yikes, down 3 runs and we stop working the count. Come on guys concentrate, battle. Agree about that cardinal luck thing, but putting the ball in play like they do, makes them lucky.
It goes without saying that our hitters are impressing me even less.
We need to stop putting guys on base. They just turn into freakin’ double plays.
Hernandez grounds into more double plays than anyone has a right to…
damn…back to the hatrack
Ramon GIDP’s 19.5% of the time he’s given the opportunity.
3 DPs, 6 LOBs. If this where a poker game, I’d leave the table. But its BB and there is time.
I wonder if non-padre fans can objectively see how unlucky the Padres have been so far in this game.
I’m running out of chairs to sit in when we bat
What’s bad luck about having fielders with poor range and hitters who hit a lot of groundballs?
OK, guys. Stop moving around. Get back to your original seats/settings. The hitters will work the count again.
I was thinking that maybe it’s time to make some hot dogs for lunch…I think the captain might be turning off the no drinking sign soon if this doesn’t change.
OK Peavy back on track, now lets work the count and get some fricking clutch hitting.
LaRussa is smiling, joking with Miller & Morgan….and Khalil swings again first pitch!
Greene has seen 2 pitches in 2 at bats.. good god almighty..
Khalil flies to center on the first pitch. Again.
Khalil swung at first pitch again. Shoot!
What is that kid smokin! Christ almighty!
Randa with a walk…Peavy with the double hit on the first bunt attempt
Why bunt here? Peavy is not a bad hitter.
Great preview of the series in this morning’s U-T (may have to jump through some hoops to access):
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20051004/83.html
Sanders plays a good left field, Klesko not so much.
That ball DR hit was in basically the same spot Edmonds hit his pop up. DR’s was actually falling and was caught.
well..theres the difference between a real left fielder and Klesko…Roberts bloops it down the line and Sanders runs it down easily to end the inning..if Klesko is in left..it’s a double and a run scored for the Padres
Damm it. 11 pitch inning for Carpenter.
I think its we are seeing a good preview here through the fifth, unfortunately.
Peavy looks bad on first two bunt attempts, so Boch keeps it on! Aaaarghhh! One run down, maybe…but four? That’s it, give away those outs…you get as many as you want in this game, don’t ya?
Ok..well staying in my original chair didn’t help…now what do i do?
7 LObs
Get a beer and start drinking.
The lineup chart here is pretty telling (PDF):
http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20051004/images/playoffs_dt.pdf
You can see just how infrequently the projected batting order for this season was actually used.
Still 12 more outs to go. Let’s hope Bochy use them wisely.
turn chair around, use mirror
Not a bad idea…I think food will help.
Greene is not a patient hitter. We knew that before the game.
Maybe stand on your head, Mark. Just kidding. Guess we are a little testy this moring. Christ, a single.
Was that in infield single?
Death by paper cuts. Is it too early to start talking about Astacio on Thursday?
But couldn’t anybody have told Greene to take one strike?
Edmonds hit a grounder back to the box that Peavy couldn’t handle. Now watch what good hitters do with RISP.
Get Klesko out of there.
Need a DP here.
Morgan: “The Padres bullpen is very, very good.” Yes, but they’re better when they have a lead.
Let’s go, Jake!
Miller says bullpen is up…maybe if Cards score any more, you get Jake out now so he can return on short rest?
OK, bar is open.
Well..this was fun while it lasted..
Grand Slam. OK. Next game!
Oh, boy that can’t be good. Time for Yoga.
Grand slam Sanders. Third time in 107 big-league starts Peavy has allowed eight or more runs in a game, first since August 18, 2002 at Montreal.
Nothing left to see here. I’m going back to work.
Yeah, time for my run.
Ug
Im going to try a whole different location for Thursday’s game…maybe that will help
Morgan is cooing about LaRussa allowing Sanders to swing 3-0. But with a 4-0 lead and the good power Sanders has shown this year, isn’t that a no-brainer? No, now it’s a veteran manager trusting his veteran player. Pleeez.
Carpenter threw 91 pitches already.
Loretta saw 26 of those and made 3 outs.
Khalil 2 pitches and 2 outs.
The rest made 3 GiDP already!
Ugh. Ugly.
What? No double switch for the pitcher’s spot?
Well, here’s some OT news that’s cheered me up a bit … a friend of mine had a baby this morning … she’s a Padres’ fan … so when I learned that she named her new son “Kahlil”, I just had to check to see if it was misspelled … indeed not … the padre loves his literature … http://www.columbia.edu/~gm84/gibtable.html … but it’s close enough to make me smile
Greene brings in Sweeney with the SF. Whoo Hoo! No more shutout. Hey, ya gotta take what positives you can from a game like this.
Friendly reminder: Game 1, 1984: Cubs 13, Padres 0.
Just in:
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter left the game due to an injured hand/wrist.
Gee, think a LF might play Jim Edmonds a little deeper than Dave Roberts? Teams have been cheating against Roberts all year.
Why not let Lawrence pitch 2 innings/more?
Nice one, Brian! Gotta love 84!
Bochy outmanuvered LaRussa on that one … got to use Burroughs in a spot where he could help the club but not make an out
I’ll take comfort where I can at the moment, so thanks, Brian G. Still… what we are seeing today is no different than what has frustrated us all year – failure to convert scoring opportunities, shoddy defense, then getting behind, and immediately forgetting about plate discipline.
EY HR!!
EY goes yard… well, it’s something.
Yup, remember how down you/we were on Oct. 2, 1984 … http://www.baseball-reference.com/postseason/1984_NLCS.shtml …
I was at the Murph for Games 4 & 5 …
CAN DO!!!
Well, this isn’t very good at all.
Ask Geoff — I’m not a ‘Glass is half-full’ kind of guy when it comes to this team. But I figured now wasn’t the time to bring up the many failings of the ‘05 Padres yet again.
You’re right, again, Brian. I’ll shut up now and finish this drink quickly before heading back to work. It’s a double.
OK, guys. This is one loss in a 5 game series.
I’ll be better in Game 2.
The team will be better in Game 2 as well.
We better hope so Didi, I don’t like the idea of having to depend on Woody to bring us a game 3 win only so we can get back to Peavy in game 4.
Do we know the pitching rotation already?
I thought, we don’t even know who’s pitching game 2.
Heck, can be worst than Game 1, Bruce.
Sorry, DP. It wasn’t a dis at you. I blame the early start for me not being able to summon the usual anger and bile while listening to a game that’s 8-0 in the 5th and we’ve already hit into three DPs…
I sure hope Fick will be at 1B in game 2.
Big Ben at the outfield corner.
I’ll vouch for BG not being a ‘half-full’ kinda guy.
I think it is a known given that Astacio is going Thursday in Game 2. The Union Trib said this morning that Woody will get the call in 3 and that Eaton will go in 5 if needed. That contradicts what we knew before though when Eaton was thought to be the Game 3 starter.
Yahoo’s box score is saying this about Carpenter …
ST. LOUIS PITCHER CHRIS CARPENTER LEFT THE GAME AFTER SIX INNINGS WITH RIGHT HAND CRAMPS DUE TO DEHYDRATION.
… so doesn’t sound bad …
Thank you, Geoff.
Hey! Wait a minute…! ;>)
RALLY! RALLY! RALLY!
So far in 9th …
- K. Greene doubled to left
- J. Randa flied out to deep right
- D. Jackson hit for S. Linebrink
- D. Jackson singled to left, K. Greene to third
Tying run at the plate?!?
8-5 Padres, bases loaded. Go Padres!!
and then …
- J. Isringhausen relieved C. Eldred
- D. Jackson stole second
- E. Young grounded out to third, K. Greene scored
- R. Klesko singled to right, D. Jackson to third
- M. Loretta singled to center, D. Jackson scored, R. Klesko to second
- B. Giles singled to center, R. Klesko scored, M. Loretta to second
RALLY! Tieing run at the plate!!!
Winning run at the plate?!?
- R. Fick singled to right, M. Loretta to third, B. Giles to second
C’mon RAMON!!!!
8-5 Final. Great work to make it close and set the tone for Thursday. Go get ‘em Pedro!
Well, at least he couldn’t hit into a game-ending DP.
That was the worst at bat I saw all game.. WTF was that. And while we’re at it…what is with Piccilo holding Loretta when Walker is down on one knee picking up the ball and Loretta is rounding 3rd base…what game is he watching?
Ra.Hernandez struck out
Nice comeback..at least they made it competitive and it was fun watching the crowd get nervous watching that 9th inning. There’s nothing wrong with hearing a home crowd boo it’s closer
Ramon swings at balls 1, 2 & 3 without making contact to end the game. You’d think he might want wait for a pitch mildly close to the strike zone…
Was Ramon’s AB as bad as it looked on gamecast?
It was horrible…he waved at 3 pitches out of the zone.
Izzy with 15 pitches … probably not a factor … but I’m glad they showed a pulse!
Well, we came back a bit, but Poppy swinging. At least he swung. damn Padres just can’t hit with RISP. But they will come back, they always do. Just when you want to hate the most, the next day they play well and win. Like I said all season, the padres are like a bad girlfriend/boyfriend, they break your heart but come back the next day and make you a nice ckicken dinner.
Mmmm….chicken.
Hey, Goff, 261 comments, is that a new record. They should start paying you, man.
Naw, we were at 400+ during a game earlier in the season.
Disappointing loss, but at least they went down fighting.
Heck! I turned the game away and the tying run came to the plate?
I’m staying away from Game 2. Maybe they’ll score more runs.

Cardinals W today is a testimony to the power of power … the grandslam was the difference … # of Padres’ XBH with runners on base: ZERO. Final LOB talley: 10 … with 22 if you count them individually …
Well, back to politics. This new SCOTUS nominee is an “interesting” choice. See you all Thursday.
mty 1090 reports Jake Peavy went to the hospital for an MRI on his ribcage.
Brian,
I didn’t take it as a dis… you are absolutely right, hope is the better road while we’re still playing… plenty of time to tear this team a new one in the off-season, even if they are WS champs!
That AB by Ramon was absolutely THE WOR… never mind… GO PEDRO! (Damn, this team brings out the bipolar in me.)
ESPN says about Peavy:
“He pitched with a rib injury that worsened in the third and was taken to a hospital after lasting only 4 1-3 innings.
A Padres spokesman said X-rays showed no break, and an MRI exam was planned at Barnes-Jewish Hospital.”
When did he get a rib injury???
ESPN now reporting that Peavy has sustained a fracture of his eigth rib and possible his ninth. Done for the season, out 4-6 weeks. Rally for Jake!
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs2005/news/story?id=2181056
Dang it! I know Jake’s a gamer and all of that, but going out to pitch with broken ribs doesn’t help the team, it hurts the team. Of course management and the training staff should have reined him in if he couldn’t rein himself in. That’s terribly disappointing!
Bochy is quoted on the Pads site saying Jake didn’t let anyone know about the injury, so unless he’s throwing him under the bus, this is all on Jake. I love his competitiveness and intensity, but this was a mistake.
The talk radio rumor is that Jake broke his ribs in the postgame celebration when the Padres clinched. No confirmation anywhere reliable… yet.
This looks like Kevin Brown and Game 1 of the WS all over again. I too admire Jake’s toughness and determination, but I can’t admire any stubborness on his part if in fact his ribs were broken before the game even started. No doubt he wanted to, and thought he could go, but the team needed a good start and didn’t get one because he wasn’t 100%
dprat, that same information about the post game celebration is also in the article on the Pads site. I consider that reliable confirmation. Gotta watch those dogpiles.
Ya, the concept of “gamer” is not obvious to me … http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=nen … I guess it’s not obvious to anyone that a pitcher is “too hurt” until it’s “too late” …
Ironic that we could have one this game if Peavy hadn’t pitched. All our other pitchers shut them down today, and we ended up scoring 5 runs.
*won this game
OT: AFL started today … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/app/milb/stats/stats.jsp?sid=l119&did=l119&t=g_box&gid=2005_10_04_gcrwin_perwin_1 … Michael Johnson went 2-for-4 … but it’s my understanding that he’s very much a non-prospect …
