IGD: Padres vs Astros (23 Aug 2005)
Tue, Aug 23, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (10-6, 3.14 ERA) vs Roger Clemens (11-5, 1.53 ERA)
The Padres lost the opener against Houston Monday night. Roy Oswalt wasn’t at his sharpest, but then, neither were the Friars. The good news, if you want to call it that, is that the Snakes and Dodgers also lost, thus remaining four and five games back, respectively.
Brilliant matchup Tuesday night. Last year’s MLB ERA leader vs this year’s. This year’s strikeout leader vs one of the all-time strikeout leaders. The future vs the past (although the past isn’t here yet for Clemens, not even close).
| AB | BA | OBP | SLG | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Peavy vs current Astros | 110 | .264 | .354 | .382 |
| Clemens vs current Padres | 133 | .256 | .306 | .444 |
Craig Biggio (.389/.476/.444 in 18 AB) and Jose Vizcaino (.500/.500/1.000 in 12 AB) have had the most success against Peavy. Vizcaino and Morgan Ensberg have the only homers.
Joe Randa (.293/.302/.561 in 41 AB) and Robert Fick (.188/.316/.563 in 16 AB) are the only Padres who have hit Clemens at all. Fick’s batting average isn’t good but two of his three his have left the yard, and he’s drawn some walks.
Overall, opponents are hitting .187/.246/.261 against Clemens this year. To put that in perspective, Arizona pitcher Russ Ortiz is hitting .210/.262/.299 for his career. That’s right, Clemens is turning hitters into a poor man’s Russ Ortiz at the plate. Yikes. If it makes you feel any better, Peavy turns hitters into a poor man’s Cristian Guzman.
A lineup full of Ortizes and Guzmans? That should be fun. You know I’ll be out the park for this one, so chat away and enjoy the game. Go Pads!

Padres right-hander Adam Eaton is scheduled to come off the disabled list on Friday and start against the Colorado Rockies.
Eaton has been on the DL twice since straining a tendon in his right middle finger in his last start, against the Detroit Tigers on June 15.
He was on the DL from June 16 to July 31, came off and made two appearances in relief and then went back on the DL in order to make three rehab starts in the minors.
“The finger’s great,” Eaton said Tuesday. “It feels like nothing has happened. There are still some times where it’s a little stiff, but I was able to get through all three starts in the minor leagues, and in between its gotten better and better since then. I feel comfortable throwing all my pitches.”
Not only will the Padres have to clear a roster spot for Eaton, but one starter will get knocked out of the rotation and into the bullpen.
Pedro Astacio could be pushed back because he felt something under his right arm in his last start.

I’d be there too if I didn’t live in Oakland. Bummed that it’s not on ESPN.

Poor first AB by Nady. Swung right through two piped fast balls at 2-1 and 2-2. Those will probably be the easiest pitches to hit he will see all night.
1-0 Pads after 2.
5-0 Mets over AZ, top of 3.

Couple of things:
Jake looks good tonight.
X made a very good play to gun down the lead runner on the sac. bunt.
The second base umpire blew what was a very, very easy call that fortunately didn’t bite the Padres in this inning, though it did make Jake throw more pitches.

Peavy: 47 pitches through four innings.
August 23, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Peavy: 59 pitches in 5 innings. 1 hit, 1 BB, 3 Ks.
August 23, 2005 at 8:09 pm
Shouldn’t Tavares be out there, the way Roberts was the other night? Or was the throw too wild? Tavares was in the baseline and not the box on the right of it.
August 23, 2005 at 8:20 pm
The Astros guys said Olivo came off the plate on that throw home for the second out. I don’t know, but I know the Padres are up 1-0.
Peavy: 6 IP, 80 piches, 3 hits, 2 BB, 3 Ks.

August 23, 2005 at 8:59 pm
Wow, great game by Peavy. Not always dominate, but that made it more impressive. He got out of jams, made great pitches when he had to.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Peavy outdueled boyhood idol Roger Clemens, throwing a four-hitter for his third shutout this season and the San Diego Padres beat the Houston Astros 2-0 on Tuesday night.
Peavy (11-6) also had a single off Clemens with one out in the eighth, one of five hits allowed by the seven-time Cy Young Award winner. Clemens threw his first complete game since July 30, 2003, at Anaheim, and the 118th of his career.

Game was unbelievable. Yes, Brian, I believe it was the best at Petco so far. I’ll have pix up in a few.
August 23, 2005 at 10:08 pm
Padres are up 5 on LA and Arizona. That lead is even bigger in this division, I think.

Truly a great game, and special in its own right, but I’d have a tough time saying it was better than opening night 2004. Tremendous buzz in the stadium all night due to it being the first ever regular season game at Petco. Pads fall behind but come back, only to see Trevor blow the save, yet still win in extra innings. I won’t aruge too much if y’all want to go with last night though.
