IGD: Padres @ Nationals (7 Aug 2005)

first pitch: 10:05 a.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (9-4, 3.31 ERA) vs Esteban Loaiza (6-7, 3.62 ERA)
preview: Padres.com

Wouldn’t Loaiza be a useful guy to have on the team right about now? I know, I shouldn’t be so catty after the Padres won their second straight series and assured themselves of a winning road trip.

But I am.

Pedro Astacio picked up his first victory for the Friars, who returned to .500 and extended their lead over Arizona to three games. As we know about the NL West, nobody wants it, somebody has to take it. Might as well be the Pads, right?

Peavy toes the slab Sunday morning as the Friars go for the sweep. He’s battling a finger problem (uh-oh), but it doesn’t appear to be too serious. Go get ‘em, Jake!

Loiza would be very nice; did we have a chance to get him and passed?

Also, Nady may, once again, sit. Nady’s splits are more skewed than I thought (OPS): .947/.736, though he has 8 of his 11 HR’s against RHP. So, that could suggest he sit against RHP. But Young and his .624 vs. RHP gets starts. And, by sticking to the logic, Bochy has no problem starting Klesko vs. LHP (.605).

Perhaps he keeps his players happy, and that is why he is considered a good manager. Not so happy about his use of players.

There was some talk of Loaiza, but I don’t know how serious it was.

Nady is in the lineup today, batting sixth. EY gets the start in left and bats third (!).

Did anyone just hear what the deal with the yellow ribbons and stuff is today?

I did a check on EY; career .911 OPS vs. Estaban, so maybe Bochy is secretly pounding the numbers. Is Randa becoming the next Nevin? The guy is slumping. I would have prefered Sweeney at 1B, EY in left and Nady at 3B. But then I remembered that the world will split open and eye-eating bats will pour forth from the core of the earth if Nady ever plays 3B. Silly me.

I think it was hank that pointed out that Nady isn’t even being platooned. If he were, he would have batted in place of Sweeney yesterday when they brought in the lefty.

And I felt sitting Randa was a good idea even before his GIDP. OK, so why having him second? Loretta is a high OBP, low power guy, so why not have him back in the second spot?

It would be great TV/Internet if Bochy would justify his logic on his line up card before every game. There could be some logic there that I just don’t see.

  7. Posted August 7, 2005 at 10:18 am | Permalink

It’s kind of tough, because Sweeney is the hottest hitter on the team (.444/.500/.611 since ASB).

Still, with Randa doing his best Sean Burroughs impersonation, a spot start for Nady at 3B every now and then wouldn’t hurt.

I cannot believe that Baerga a) is still in the big leagus and b) is only 6 months older than me.

That’s a heckuva play by Jake to end the inning.

dang I wish we had tv coverage. was that throw bad enough to pull Nady off the bag?

  11. Posted August 7, 2005 at 10:38 am | Permalink

Hank, the throw wouldn’t have beat him anyway. Ball wasn’t hit hard enough. I’m actually surprised Loretta bothered to throw. Nady did a nice job to come off the bag since he didn’t have a play.

Wow, that is some horrible baserunning by Loaiza to get picked off second with two on and nobody out.

speaking of Loaiza, he is making this look too easy..

    tks for the update geoff..

these guys provide so much color on the broadcast that there is hardly any time to describe the play.

Cepicky gave that one a good ride. Just got under it. Peavy is not at his best today, but I’ll take his second best over most guys’ best.

I am afraid that Jake’s habit of “gutting it out”
is going to cause him a serious injury one of these days.

He is such a good kid and a tough competitor

dang, Jake was hitting 1.667 ops coming into today, now he is adding on to that, we are gonna have to start playing him regular..lol

that ops was just for the road trip..

  18. Posted August 7, 2005 at 11:22 am | Permalink

You’re right, Jake is a tough competitor. They walked Olivo to get to Peavy, and Loaiza quickly jumped ahead 0-2. Jake choked up on the bat, took a ball, fouled another off, and then slapped one right back through the box. Very solid.

Okay, I guess Bochy knew what he was doing batting EY third today. That was a bomb.

actually, looking at the numbers, ey has the most ab’s and rbi on the road trip and .915ops (i think)

TV guys are talking to Alderson now. They had Winfield on earlier. No great insights yet.

X hits one out to dead center. How many guys on this team can hit the ball out to that part of the park? He went down to get that one.

GET THE DAMN GUY INTO THE GAME, EVERY SINGLE DAY!

Sorry, it’s a constant sore point for me.

you are not alone, geoff. This kid needs to be somewhere on the field everyday. I dont know what Bochy has against him. He is now the only right handed power bat the Padres have(unless they go get Johnson or Knott)

Peavy is at 99 pitches through 7 innings. Eaton is up in the bullpen. Not sure I’d go to him, but I guess we’ll see.

Ten punchouts for Peavy. Fifth time he’s reached double digits this year. Peavy entered the game leading MLB in K/9 with 10.07:

I think he has jumped back ahead of Pedro for the strikeout lead. at least until Pedro pitches again. they have been passing the lead back and forth..

Peavy is at 111 pitches. Looks like they’re going to let him go for the shutout. Not sure that’s the best move, but good luck trying to take him out of the game.

One out. Peavy’s at 113 pitches.

As Geoff said, good luck getting Peavy outta that game. Nice economical ninth too!

  32. Posted August 7, 2005 at 12:23 pm | Permalink

Game over. Second shutout of season for Peavy, 119 pitches. Let the guy go out for the ninth after 111 pitches and he finishes ‘em of on 8 more. It’s like hitting on a 17 and getting a 4. Not necessarily the best move but it worked. More importantly, we swept the Nats and went 5-1 on the road trip. Nice.

I gotta go grill some steaks. Good chatting with you, Hank.

With 10 strikeouts Sunday — his sixth time in 2005 with at least that many — RHP Jake Peavy moved into the major league lead with 165 Ks. … Peavy’s single in the fifth inning gave him his second RBI of the season on his seventh hit. “I’m not going to go ahead and call myself Willie Mays, just yet,” he said. … Peavy hurt the middle finger on his throwing hand Friday, and manager Bruce Bochy said before Sunday’s game that he would keep a close eye on his starter. Peavy got ready to bat in the top of the ninth without seeing whether Bochy was considering lifting him. “He didn’t even look at me when he went on deck,” Bochy said. “I said, ‘Jake, how you doing?’ He said, ‘Fine!’” … On the six-game road trip that ended Sunday, Eric Young went 9-for-20 (.450) with two homers and six RBIs.

Also amazing, imo, is that Jake was apparently pitching with only his fastball and change.
