Ducksnorts Radio Episode 1
Mon, Aug 8, 2005by Geoff Young
One of the founding principles of Ducksnorts is the willingness to experiment. The phrase I repeat to myself constantly is, “Try stuff, it might work.” So in that spirit, I present to you the first episode of Ducksnorts Radio:
- Ducksnorts Radio Episode 1: Aug. 7, 2005 (17:47, 6.1MB)
Today’s episode includes a look at the Padres’ upcoming homestand against the Mets and Phillies, how the club stacks up against the rest of a weak NL West in terms of schedule over the next few weeks, and what kind of help might be available down on the farm. Thanks for joining us, and enjoy!
Apparently you can download this thing into your iPod and listen to it on the go. That’s kinda cool. I made my wife listen to the podcast, and she compares it to Wayne’s World (without the humor or sweet mullet).
A few comments after the fact:
- Although the show is just under 18 minutes long, it took about 10 hours to produce, mainly because I had no idea what I was doing. Also, between trying to get all the equipment I needed, actually making it work, and trying to say something quasi-intelligent, I found words coming out of my mouth that I’d forgotten I knew. I won’t repeat those here.
- Much, much respect to guys who broadcast for a living. For instance, I’ll no longer give grief to anyone on air for saying “uh,” “um,” or “y’know.” It’s a lot harder than it looks.
- At one point in the broadcast, I refer to Pads’ minor leaguer Adam Bourassa as a former teammate of Tim Stauffer in the Cape Cod League. That is incorrect. They played in the CCL together but on different teams. And the name of the book is The Last Best League.
- The music is all me, but none of it is original material. That may change in the future, assuming I do another one of these.
So give it a listen, let me know what you think. Is this anything? Does it have potential? Or do you need to pull me aside and slap me upside the head?
Finally, if you’re not into the whole podcasting thing and you’d rather just read something, I’ve busted out a look at Game 5 of the 2001 World Series that originally ran in November 2001. Enjoy!
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

I’ve downloaded it to my iPod and I’ll listen to it tomorrow. Cool idea.

I don’t have an ipod, but it plays on my puter at work.
Interesting stuff, pretty cool. You sound a lot younger and taller then I thought.
Need the bumper at the end of the show as well.
And about those bumpers, maybe something that says baseball is fun, rather then they baseball is dark and ominous…just a thought.
Very cool duckman. You must be an early adapter to put up with 10 hours of production time. And your wife is a saint.
Yes, guys on the radio do a lot of work to make it sound good.
One small suggestion. Interject your own opinion into the pcast, its why we show up at DSs, it hear your take on things.
Go Padres!

Thanks, Mike. Mostly I’m very stubborn, and once I start something, I need to finish it. I will work on more “fun” musical bits between segments.
Also, the Ducksnorts theme song is supposed to be at the beginning and end of the show but I ran into some technical issues. I thought about throwing something onto the end, but after 10 hours I’d reached my limit.
Good point about the opinions. I’ll be sure to include more of those next time. Still feeling my way around this thing. Thanks again for listening and for the feedback.

Oh, and my wife *is* a saint. And I would say that even if she didn’t read the comments.

I’m a bit bored by the talk of steriods, but …
In this column … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/ne.....;type=lgns … Dave Kindred (SportingNews) says “The use of most steroids without a doctor’s prescription has been illegal in the United States since 1991. … Anyone who used steroids without a prescription after 1991 was committing a criminal act.”
I’m not sure I’ve heard/read it that clearly before … do you understand his statements to be true?
August 8, 2005 at 3:32 pm
Yes, LM, steroids were made Schedule III drugs, which makes their use without a prescription, iirc, a felony, or at the very least “a criminal act.” Basically, they’re on a par with heroin, cocaine and other illegal drugs.

Not all substances banned by MLB are illegal w/o prescription, though some are.

On another note, Peavy was named NL Player of the Week:

Great stuff for my MP3 player. Keep it up.

Thanks, Jeremy. Much appreciated!
Shifting gears, Peter Handrinos has posted an interview with Ted Giannoulas (SD Chicken):

Good stuff.

Great Podcast. You stole my idea.
One thing that I can think of that would make it better would be to have someone else with you doing the show.
Mabye get different people together and have each person concentrate on a certain portion of the show (ie one person does minor league report etc.)
Thanks

I think it was very impressive for a first effort. I agree with the person who suggested more opinion instead of info, but for the first crack at something experimental, I think you did the right thing in being conservative with the content. So one person suggested more opinion, another suggested getting another person–combine the two and get some argument, beef, a little spice. Would be very fun to listen to.

Great job, Geoff. But I do agree that you need someone to argue with. Get two people together who like each other, but also love to argue with each other, and it’s ratings gold. It worked with “Moonlighting.” It worked with “PTI.” It will work here, damnit.

Great suggestions, all. Keep ‘em coming!
“Moonlighting” - I miss that show.

Geoff, I’ll be more than happy to volunteer my arguing services prior to the Braves series. I’m still bitter about that series in May.

Coolness. Just don’t mention J.D. Drew.
