IGD: Padres vs Giants (2 Jul 2005)
Sat, Jul 2, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Woody Williams (3-5, 4.24 ERA) vs Jeff Fassero (1-5, 4.02 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | Padres.com
The games are becoming increasingly difficult to watch. Brian Giles thrown out trying to steal third with nobody out and a lefty at the plate? Sean Burroughs again being asked to lay down a sacrifice and still not being able to do so? Various infielders flinging the ball wide of the mark? If the Padres are trying to win the division, they’re doing a fine job of disguising that fact.
No disrespect to Kevin Correia, but let’s be serious. As Eric noted in the comments last night, “I wonder if the baseball gods are making up for Darrell May vs. Johan Santana.” I think Eric may be onto something.
AB BA OBP SLG
Williams vs current Giants 242 .269 .337 .405
Fassero vs current Padres 152 .283 .337 .414
For the Giants, Omar Vizquel (.450/.542/.600 in 20 AB) and Ray Durham (.421/.450/.579 in 19 AB) are the chief culprits. On the other side, it’s all about Giles (.389/.476/.611 in 18 AB) and Eric Young (.414/.433/.483 in 29 AB). Young is coming off the DL today (more below); it’ll be good to see him back in there against lefties.
Roster Shuffle
Speaking of May, he and Tim Redding have been traded to the Yankees along with “an unspecified amount of cash” in exchange for Paul Quantrill. The Pads are also activating Eric Young and recalling Brian Falkenborg from Portland. Also, Dave Roberts could be headed to the DL and Adam Eaton isn’t quite ready to come off, which could mean a start for recently signed Pedro “More Right Handed Than Darrell May and Less a Marlin Than Ismael Valdez” Astacio (note to self: need to work on a better monicker for Astacio).
So to summarize:
| In | Out |
|---|---|
| Paul Quantrill | Darrell May |
| Brian Falkenborg | Tim Redding |
| Eric Young | Dave Roberts (?) |
Different? Certainly. Better? We’ll see.
Also, U-T writer Tim Sullivan notes that the Padres may not be done dealing. As usual, there’s just a lot of talk and speculation at this point. Whether anything actually gets done remains to be seen.
Draft Update
First-round pick Cesar Carrillo has signed and will report to Lake Elsinore this Monday. Second-rounders Chase Headley and Nicholas Hundley, third-rounder Joshua Greer, and 10th-rounder Joshua Alley also have inked deals, which means the Friars have signed 10 of their top 12 picks from the June draft.
Enjoy the game. I’ll be out watching the Surf Dawgs tonight. I haven’t lost my faith; I just need to take a little break from the NL West giveaway.

Funny…such a pitiful game last night and you are right, unwatchable…and frankly…unblogable. This team is stuggling with its identity big time. Our Karma has gotten messed up somewhere.
Soooooo Frustrating!!!

I haven’t read yesterday’s comments … but I feel it necessary to state my stance on the decision to PH for Peavy yesterday … the article in the UT this morning said “the Padres were forced to pinch hit for Peavy in a 2-2 tie” … now I’m as big a fan of the PH as anybody … you’ll see me advocating for a PH pretty frequently … BUT I disagree’d with this one as it was happening … because the “force” was created by having Khilil bunt … in other words, I’d have MUCH prefered to take my chances with Khalil swinging away with runners on base …
I think the REAL problem is having Burroughs above the 8-hole in the lineup … he’s not long for being in the line-up at all …
And DJ’s lost whatever mo he had a week ago … easy come … easy go … whassup with that?

Chris Hammond is the second-best reliever in baseball according to Baseball Prospectus via Peter Gammons latest column.
July 2, 2005 at 6:08 pm
Good point about Burroughs batting ahead of Greene. Why not bat him 8th so he’ll at least get a few walks? He shouldn’t be in the lineup at all really but Greene would be more effective if he was moved up in the order.
Has anybody figured out the Quantrill deal? It kind of makes sense if the Padres are clearing out some roster space for a big trade. And what’s in it for the Yankees? Did they just feel they needed to get something in return for Quantrill?
July 2, 2005 at 6:15 pm
I think the Yankees wanted to get a little younger with those two pitchers. I think the Padres think they can get something out of Quantrill now for this season’s pennant race.
July 2, 2005 at 6:43 pm
Younger? Somebody should tell George that younger doesn’t help if they can’t get anybody out.
July 2, 2005 at 6:44 pm
Tonight’s lineup:
2B Young
SS Greene
CF Giles
1B Nady
C Fick
RF Johnson
3B Burroughs
LF Jackson
P Williams
It’s certainly creative.
July 2, 2005 at 7:11 pm
Nady fed Woody well on that put out at first
July 2, 2005 at 7:12 pm
1st is where I see Nady long term, not third…
July 2, 2005 at 7:18 pm
bloopers…geeeesh..
wouldnt have been a problem if we didnt walk alou
July 2, 2005 at 7:18 pm
c’mon! what, we got Lawrence Olivier up there playing Zeus and blowing balls just out of reach?
July 2, 2005 at 7:19 pm
that was the right approach with Alou…don’t let the guy who has been their best beat you…
July 2, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Just got in from doing yard work… how’d the Giants score?
July 2, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Nice pick by X. Seems like he may be an improvement over Nevin in the field, too.
July 2, 2005 at 7:33 pm
typically…in the most frustrating way possible.
That was a nice stretch by X…
July 2, 2005 at 7:35 pm
Interesting choice by Fick to try to drag bunt…
July 2, 2005 at 7:38 pm
That was a really great AB by Fick.
Nice analysis by Gwynn, too…
July 2, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Fick slides into second base real hard.
July 2, 2005 at 7:40 pm
Anyone know if there’s a reason Klesko isn’t starting?
July 2, 2005 at 7:42 pm
easy Richard, we might start having suspicions if you keep proppin Nady that way..lol
July 2, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Yankees were going to lose 3 million that was owed to Quantril anyway. They had waived him so he was already gone and gonna get paid anyway. Getting a couple of pitchers that might possibly help and not paying the whole 3 million is a plus for them.
July 2, 2005 at 7:55 pm
RBI single for Greeney.
July 2, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Now runners on first and second with only one out. Giles and Nady coming up…
July 2, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Bases juiced for the team’s leading slugger and only one out.
July 2, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Fick with his second great PA of the night. RBI walk. Well done.
July 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Ben Johnson with a big 2-RBI double!
July 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Way to go Rook!
July 2, 2005 at 8:13 pm
amazing, a rally that didnt die with the sacks full and no runs scored..
great beginning for Ben Johnson..
to think they were writing him off just a year ago..
July 2, 2005 at 8:15 pm
looks like Woody has settled down.. another 1, 2, 3 inning…
lots of things to smile about today..
July 2, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Eric Young has picked up right where he left off.
July 2, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Think we can get Woody to give some lessons to the position players?
…and welcome back EY!
July 2, 2005 at 8:20 pm
I was looking at Johnson’s stats and I still can’t figure out why Johnson had been written off by anyone.
July 2, 2005 at 8:32 pm
look back beyond last year..
2004 .251/.334/.480 23 hrs and 136k’s(mobile)
2003 .181/.252/.244 1hr and 36k’s(mobile)
2003 .266/.354/.446 8hr and 49k’s(LakeElsinore)
those 2004 numbers are a little misleading because half way through the year he seemed to figure it out and start producing. consequently he finished real strong and got the invitation to the big league camp because of it.

I swear Hammond should have been pitching back in New York when there were like 18 daily newspapers. Somebody would have come up with a great name for that changeup…
July 2, 2005 at 8:59 pm
hank,

July 2, 2005 at 9:00 pm
EY is 3 for 4, now? He’s probably batting about .500 for the season with that…
July 2, 2005 at 9:01 pm
Make that .571 for the year. heh
July 2, 2005 at 9:03 pm
Taschner’s pretty impressive…
July 2, 2005 at 9:10 pm
That has to be E-5 doesn’t it … that was hit RIGHT AT Burroughs … and he leaped out of the way!!!
July 2, 2005 at 9:11 pm
I just got in from “Land of the Dead.” I’m not talking about North Carolina. I saw the movie. Good to see we are doing well.
July 2, 2005 at 9:16 pm
Did everyone see Luis Gonzalez go into the bleachers at Dodger Stadium to rob Jason Phillips of a 2-run, game-tying home run earlier today? It was pretty nice.
July 2, 2005 at 9:17 pm
Big, big strikeout by Aki for the second out of the eighth.
July 2, 2005 at 9:18 pm
Aki looked excellent tonight.
July 2, 2005 at 9:19 pm
G’night all.
July 2, 2005 at 9:19 pm
Aki’s strike 3 to Durham was just diving into the dirt … nice split finger!!!
July 2, 2005 at 9:20 pm
Hammond’s ERA is down to 1.55. I think he should be an All-Star. Who’s with me?
July 2, 2005 at 9:20 pm
great job by AKI!!!
July 2, 2005 at 9:21 pm
I’m sorry, Hammond’s ERA went up to 1.77. I still think he should be an All-Star.
July 2, 2005 at 9:28 pm
Cue AC/DC …
July 2, 2005 at 9:31 pm
One out (Death).
July 2, 2005 at 9:32 pm
And I contend that Hammond’s ERA should have gone DOWN tonight … they shoulda given Burroughs an error on the “double” by Vizquel … the ball was hit RIGHT AT Burroughs!
July 2, 2005 at 9:36 pm
I didn’t see it, but if it helps Hammond, I’m wiht it.
July 2, 2005 at 9:36 pm
Change is good. Two outs (Taxes).
July 2, 2005 at 9:38 pm
Farm Report: Sean Thompson with good start @ Mobile tonight … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_msbaax_1 …

July 2, 2005 at 9:40 pm

good win and nice to see the rookie make a positive impression..
July 2, 2005 at 9:41 pm
’twas good to see DJ putting good wood on the ball again … he look’d lost last night … then 3-for-4 tonight …
July 2, 2005 at 10:05 pm
Farm Report: Headley (1-for-5, 1 RBI), Hundley (3 walks, 3 Rs), Ramos (2.2 IP with 0 ERs) … big W for Eugene …
July 2, 2005 at 10:52 pm
Nice game. It would have been nice to see them bury the Giants, but a W is as W. Tough match up tomorrow, except the Padres seem to hit Schmidt well.
What’s up with Fick? I keep thinking that they should at least give starts to Migi against LHP (Fick has horrid splits) but the dude keeps getting hits. I mean you give Migi a start in right but won’t start him at his base position against LHP?
No idea was Klesko was out, but DJ put up Klesko numbers (on a good night).
Greene looks lost. His hit was almost a ducksnort.
And cannot Sean make an adjustment? He generally swings at strikes, takes balls, which is good. But he has mastered the flare-pop to left. Maybe that is all he can do with an up an in heater, so the keep giving it to him.
I liked the EY pick up, and was bummed to see him go down. Good to see him back.
