  1. Connery Says:

Astacio??? Do the Pads know Germano is coming off a complete game shut out???
Wonder if you heard about the news- Joe Randa for Germano and Travis Chick. Good move for this year, I think Germano’s better than Stauffer though, and I think he will prove it by next year. Not too many will agree with that, but I think it will show when they both get a year’s worth of work in the starting rotation next year. We will have to see how this one plays out.

  2. Padre Mike Says:

Yes, indeed. Off to the beach.

  3. Kevin Says:

BIG NEWS: The Baltimore Orioles on Saturday agreed to trade right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson to San Diego for first baseman Phil Nevin.

Nevin has a limited no-trade clause and had yet to approve the deal, ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reports, and according to Nevin’s clause, he can veto a trade to the Orioles.

  4. Brian G. Says:

It’s not a done deal though.

  5. Kevin Says:

Right, it says Nevin has to approve it.

  6. Kevin Says:

Here is another one: Intent on holding onto the NL West lead, the Padres on Saturday acquired third baseman Joe Randa from the Cincinnati Reds for Double-A pitcher Justin Germano and another minor leaguer, ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reports.

  7. Kevin Says:

If the Nevin trade goes through, the Padres plan to use Randa at third and Xavier Nady at first base.

  8. Brian G. Says:

I guess what I’m saying is that if Nevin didn’t want to leave before, why would he now, leaving his home area and a team that (inbelievably) will likely make the postseason to go all the way across the country to play for a team that will most likely finish behind the Yankees and Red Sox (again)?

  9. Kevin Says:

I’m sure why he would, but here’s hoping. He should know that he’s not wanted and not producing for a division winner.

  10. hank Says:

Nevin may not be wanted by the management, but I am sure he is wanted by the players. He refused 2 mil in incentives to give up his no trade powers, why would he do it now.. its not happening.

  11. Kevin Says:

He is starting at first today, so it’s not happening any time soon.

  12. Jeff Says:

Conspiracy theory: Did Towers make the Nevin move knowing (or pretty certain) that Phil would veto a trade to Baltimore? After all, now the fingerpointing that happened last year (no moves to strengthen the team) that happened at the deadline will be lessened; Towers can say, “We tried”, etc. Of course, the Randa deal does show them doing something this year. Just throwing this out there.

  13. Richard B. Wade Says:

If he scraps the trade, I think he should be booed every time he comes to the plate or takes the field at PetCo.

  14. hank Says:

Why? He has the right to play in San Diego if he wants. He has a signed contract giving him that right.

If you live in San Diego, would you take a job in Baltimore? Leave your house and all your family in San Diego? Not hardly unless there were overwhelming incentives..eh?

  15. Geoff Young Says:

Randa for Chick and Germano is confirmed:

    http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/.....p;c_id=cin

Kudos to Connery for breaking it. This is a horrible, horrible trade for the Padres. Randa is a free agent at the end of the season. Somebody hit the panic button.

  16. Rich Campbell Says:

I personally fear that Nevin will veto the Baltimore deal, even if they actually got the Orioles to go for it. But I like the trade for Randa. He is a proven commodity in the Major’s and we are in a pennant race. We are risking some backfire, but I still like it. And even if Nevin veto’s the trade, perhaps the situation drives him to prove himself for the rest of the year? Not much negative there…

  17. Geoff Young Says:

    Nevin deal remains on hold:

    http://msnbc.msn.com/id/8680418/

Ponson basically has had one good season in seven. He’s expensive and not real great. But he throws innings and he does free Xavier Nady. All things considered, this would be a good move for the Padres despite Ponson’s general mediocrity. At least our bad contract would be in a greater position of need. When all else fails, lower your standards.

Is anyone watching the game? I can’t bring myself to turn on the TV.

  18. Geoff Young Says:

Good call, Rich, on Nevin. I don’t think there’s ever a downside to at least attempting to move the guy.

  19. hank Says:

Astacio has been terrific today. I dont think anyone can be disappointed with only the 1 run on 2 hits in 4 innings. The only problem is, the offense is dormant again.

  20. Lance Says:

My usual not-so-in-depth thoughts on the Nevin/Poson deal are up at Friar Faithful. I hate to see Richard get his hopes up.

I bet Nevin would okay the deal if Bochy started having him bunt every time he comes to the plate with runners aboard.
Come to think of it, that doesn’t sound so far-fetched.

  21. Richard B. Wade Says:

“Why? He has the right to play in San Diego if he wants. He has a signed contract giving him that right.” - hank

Why? Because it hurts the team, Hank. That’s why. What else shoud Padre fans be worrying about?

  22. Geoff Young Says:

I couldn’t bear it; I had to turn on the TV. But the sound is off. We have a guy on second with nobody out in the seventh and Blum at the plate.

  23. Lance Says:

The “Winning Machine” kills the inning by grounding into a double play. I hear he’s a really nice guy, however.

  24. Geoff Young Says:

Now I really can’t bear it. Roberts grounds into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners. Still 2-0. Sorry, I’m turning off the TV. The Padres are embarrassing themselves right now.

  25. hank Says:

how is Nevin hurting the team? he is hitting about as well as anyone else is right now. He has pulled off some really nice plays defensively.

  26. Lance Says:

Nevin is hurting the team more by his displacement of a younger, cheaper, and better player in the lineup (Nady) than with poor play.
Although he HAS generally played poorly this season.

  27. hank Says:

he HAS NOT played poorly. His hitting has been below the standard that Nevin has set for himself, that is true.

  28. Geoff Young Says:

There are currently 28 first baseman in MLB who have at least 250 PA this year. Phil is #28 in OPS:

    http://tinyurl.com/cllcq

He is not the best offensive *or* defensive first baseman on the Padres.

  29. Lance Says:

Nevin was not a good hitter LAST year, either.
He cleared 100 RBI (barely), but a good hitter drives in 130+ hitting behind Loretta and Giles.
He’s 34, so if you’re waiting for him to “come out of his slump” it ain’t gonna happen.

  30. Lance Says:

Another loss, BTW. This horseshit team is STILL gonna end up in the postseason, where anything can happen. I just hope they don’t embarrass themselves on the national stage the way they are currently embarrassing themselves.

  31. Geoff Young Says:

I’m not so sure about the division. Unbelievably there are still three teams within seven games of the Padres. We’re now 28-42 in months other than May. That’s an even .400 winning percentage.

  32. Richard B. Wade Says:

Nevin hasn’t merely been below his normal standards. He has been lousy. He has a negative MLVr. He has a Rate2 below 100. That means he’s been a below average hitter and a below average defensive first baseman. The latter is reasonable because some of the first basemen have to be below average, but no first baseman should be a below average hitter. That’s ****.

  33. Lance Says:

    Richard and Nevin,
    Kissin in a tree,
    K-I-S-S-I-N-G!!!

My enthusiasm for Ponson ain’t so much, but I’m still hoping the deal happens.

  34. Kevin Says:

Yeah, Nevin has sucked. I don’t see how anyone can say he hasn’t.

Ponson sucks too. But this deal is all about getting rid of Nevin and giving his time to Nady.
