IGD: Padres @ Mets (21 Jul 2005)
Thu, Jul 21, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 9:10 a.m., PT
television: none
matchup: Jake Peavy (8-3, 3.03 ERA) vs Kaz Ishii (2-8, 5.57 ERA)
After Tuesday night’s loss at Shea Stadium, the Padres find their lead over Arizona cut to 4 1/2 games. They also find themselves in danger of being swept by the Mets, which I don’t recall being a waypoint along the road to the playoffs. I’m sure this is all very amusing, but it really is time to start winning.
Wednesday’s contest is a morning affair. Fire up some bacon and eggs, pretend you can watch the game on TV. Oh, isn’t Peavy throwing the ball well. Wow, Xavier Nady hit that one a mile. Ha, ha, ha. I crack myself up. There’s a walk from Ishii. And some other game-like stuff happens. Man, who needs television when we have this?

That was a very depressing game. I was very impressed wtih Xavier’s performance though. He deserves to play more often. After going 3-4 tonight, he’ll probably be benched tomorrow which doesn’t seem fair.
July 21, 2005 at 8:15 am
Getting a little tired of Boche. Its obvious Nady is hitting and N and K are not. But Bcke continurely relies on the old righty-lefty batting lineup. That is crap, get Nady in.
Although Nady did lose that flyball last night.
July 21, 2005 at 8:20 am
Lauren, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, Nady has been very solid all year. But even when he’s carrying the offense we get headlines like this:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....adres.html
To reiterate, Dave Roberts, for all the good he has done for this club, is no great shakes in center. But I’m sure they would have found an excuse for him if he’d been the one to miss that fly ball.
Very irritating.
July 21, 2005 at 8:43 am
That’s a crap article.
The fact that the Padres left the bases loaded twice and ended up only scoring 3 runs wasn’t mentioned (oh, two of those by Nady).
Let’s see Nady hasn’t played in a while and Shea is a big park. Even Roberts admitted to never having a game like he did two days ago. OK, the dropped ball was devastating but the Padres’ bats are just asleep.
I’m going to start calling Phil, K-evin from now on. Isn’t it strange that Klesko can take pitches only from left handers. He pretty much will swing at the first pitch offered by a righty.
OK, enough. Go Hensley.
Sounds like he got a good start.
July 21, 2005 at 8:51 am
Today’s ominous, foreboding Padre stats: They are 5-11 on Wednesdays overall this year, 2-7 in Wed. road games and are outscored 49-62 in Wed. road games.
PS - Wednesdays and Sundays (7-9) are the only two days of the week that they’re sub-.500. Both are often getaway days. Any correlation there?
July 21, 2005 at 8:53 am
Oh, and they’re also on an 85-win pace. Isn’t 83 the all-time low for a division winner?
July 21, 2005 at 9:02 am
Fascinating look at Sean Burroughs’ chances of ever developing power at the big-league level at THT:

I haven’t had a chance to digest it yet, but I love this kind of research.
July 21, 2005 at 9:13 am
And its game on. Lets see how many LOBs the LOBdres get today.
July 21, 2005 at 9:17 am
For those in the office, don’t forget Gameday, available free on padres.com. Its a little icon under the main picture on the main page.
July 21, 2005 at 9:20 am
Cancel your morning meetings, everyone. Game is on.
July 21, 2005 at 9:20 am
One innning, one LOB. This could be a record day.
Of course, if they start winning or even hitting, I’ll stop this angry nonsense, but right now, its cathartic.
July 21, 2005 at 9:29 am
Are you work today, Mike? Where are you watching the game?
July 21, 2005 at 9:33 am
Gameday, a little java applet that provides near realtime updates. Pretty cool. Find it on the padres website.
July 21, 2005 at 9:35 am
Gee, another runner stranded (LOB). The LOBdres are on thier game today.
July 21, 2005 at 9:36 am
Nady shows off the glove on that liner to right. Nice dive.
July 21, 2005 at 9:43 am
Peavy gets it started with a dying quayle.
July 21, 2005 at 9:43 am
Farm Report: Knott with #20 … but I’ll bet we’ve seen the last of Falkenborg … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1
July 21, 2005 at 9:44 am
Eric Young also goes up the middle. first and second. Can we get them in, Mike?
July 21, 2005 at 9:47 am
A bunt there from Loretta is insane.
July 21, 2005 at 9:48 am
P to 3rd to 1st double play? This team is snake bit.
July 21, 2005 at 9:49 am
Yeah, a bunt right at the pitcher.
July 21, 2005 at 9:51 am
Mike,
I did a little research for you. San Diego is 5th overall in LOBs (3rd in the NL) with 716. AZ leads the world with 755. The Padres are 2nd overall in being shutout and 25th overall in Slug %.
Geoff, I wish Richard had been here when they bunted Loretta with two on and no outs…
July 21, 2005 at 9:51 am
LOB: two more.
July 21, 2005 at 9:53 am
I hope Richard is sitting down when he finds out and had no sharp objects in his possession.
July 21, 2005 at 9:53 am
Wow, that is 3 LOBs for Nevin alone, 4 overall. Very Nice!
Thanks BG for the statistical backup to my sarcasm this morning.
BTW, where do you find that info so quick?
July 21, 2005 at 10:01 am
We need to find a way to pin the Padres’ failure to score in third on Nady. Any ideas?
July 21, 2005 at 10:02 am
Believe it or not, I got it through a Canadian site (I used to go there for good hockey coverage when they used to have a league): http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/de.....atting.htm
That’s just the NL but the AL is available too. Pretty good (if basic) info.
July 21, 2005 at 10:14 am
Wow, an inning with no LOBs. Oh, wait, 9-mil wasn’t up that inning.
Yes, Nady as scapegoat…thinking, thinking…he is playing right today thereby putting Giles out of his normal routine. Might be an angle there. I’ll get back to you.
July 21, 2005 at 10:14 am
Dogs go up early 1-0 …
July 21, 2005 at 10:24 am
Peavy gives up his second homer of the day. 3-0, Mets.
July 21, 2005 at 10:27 am
…and walks the pitcher. Must be hot in NY.
July 21, 2005 at 10:31 am
We didn’t show up for this series.
July 21, 2005 at 10:34 am
And now the double steal squeeze play plates a run. Its real hot in NY, like Africa hot.
Hey, anybody going to Del Mar today.
****whistling****
July 21, 2005 at 10:34 am
This got ugly in a hurry.
July 21, 2005 at 10:38 am
Kevin, we haven’t shown up for the month of June or July either. Starting to look like pretenders.
They did win last Sat, a game I took my 10 year old son to. That was nice of them.
Hey, adjusting my expectation downward, ever downward. At least we know.
****more whistling*****
July 21, 2005 at 10:43 am
Nevin strikes out again with men on base. He has been terrible.
July 21, 2005 at 10:43 am
RALLY TIME!
- M. Loretta walked
- B. Giles singled to right, M. Loretta to second
- P. Nevin struck out swinging
… oh, thanks Phil
Go X!
July 21, 2005 at 10:44 am
Nevin should have bunted.
July 21, 2005 at 10:46 am
Nevin bunting…now that is comedy.
July 21, 2005 at 10:46 am
Losing Eaton has been a big blow.
July 21, 2005 at 10:47 am
2 more left on base.
July 21, 2005 at 10:51 am
Two more LOBs. Nice work. That is 6 LOBs in six innings, against an 2-8 , 5.85 ERA pitcher no less.
Porbably throwing bullets though.
****whistling again*****
July 21, 2005 at 10:52 am
X & Khalil bailed on us too …
- X. Nady flied out to deep left
- K. Greene struck out swinging
… we’ve nowhere to turn
You’re right, Padre Mike, it is cathartic …
July 21, 2005 at 10:55 am
Double switch with Nady if Peavy keeps getting shelled?
July 21, 2005 at 10:56 am
No, Greene got pulled.
July 21, 2005 at 10:59 am
Gee 9-mil is still in the game and he’s got three LOBs to his credit, yet they pull Greeny for striking out. Clearly, they are not paying Green enough.
Hope he hasn’t strained an o’bleak muscle.
July 21, 2005 at 11:05 am
Hint: Now would be a good time to stick Nady at 3B. The game is out of hand, why not give him some reps?
July 21, 2005 at 11:08 am
Through 5.1 innings:
Mets’ 5-8 hitters - 5-10, 2 HR, 7 R, 4 RBI
Padres 4-8 hitters - 1-13, 3 Ks
Time for one of legendary coach Bruce Bochy’s legendary post-game tirades to shake them out of this funk?
July 21, 2005 at 11:09 am
Quantrill is looking very Tim Reddingish.
July 21, 2005 at 11:10 am
Good point Geoff, but Bochy would probably never think of it. Plus in a nod to Hank, there probably is no way to pull it off in a double switch since Bochy seems addicted to those at the moment. He puts the human statue at SS to boot.
I am beginning to think that the Padres, even with the division there for the taking, shouldn’t give away the farm trying to upgrade this team. As long as Nevin is here, it is too hard to upgrade the offense, and a more reliable starter is not going to help the bigger problem, an offense with at least 3 underwhelming holes at the moment.
July 21, 2005 at 11:13 am
Our run differential this series is 22-4.
July 21, 2005 at 11:13 am
bochy was jonesing for a doubleswitch and thats why greenie got pulled. boch needed his doubleswitch fix.
July 21, 2005 at 11:15 am
I’m with Padre Mike. This team is getting harder and harder to watch. This is essentially the same team as last year, currently on pace to win 85, and KT in his wisdom thought that, standing almost pat, they could win the division. He was right, as so far this is BY FAR the weakest division in MLB.
But Bochy’s deployment of his resources in terms of who gets PAs and his giving away of precious outs in the hope of “manufacturing runs” have been infuriating. And even threaten to give away a playoff berth, a berth virtually handed to them, if any other team in the division even has a luke-warm stretch.
This is no small thing… with three playoff appearances in 35 years thus far, to see them doing their best to squander this one… well, many of us are tasting the bile!
July 21, 2005 at 11:18 am
!@#$%^&*( I don’t know what to say….
Bunting with Loretta?!!!
I’ll let K-evin bunt…or on the bench.
Urrrggghhh!
July 21, 2005 at 11:18 am
Damn, I see the USAToday BB salary DB has Phil, I’ve got 4 LOBs today, Nevin making 9.6 mil and Klesko making 9.0. Have to change Phils name to 9.6 Mil.
Oh, is there a game on?
OUCH!!! 13-0, sounds like a Charger pregame.
Hey, how bout that rain yesterday?
July 21, 2005 at 11:23 am
“He puts the human statue at SS to boot.” … nice pun, Bruce!
July 21, 2005 at 11:26 am
well, that was fun, not. Gotta go scrape some paint or clean some toilets, anything but this.
Actually, heading to Yoga class; will try to unwind by winding up. Hey, it makes more sense then a Padre game.
I guess LOB count is moot at this point, 6 I think.
Bruce is right with 9.6 mil and 9.0 mil under performing, it will be hard to upgrade and may not be worth it. This is the curse of the mid-market team.
See you all in the city of brotherly love.
July 21, 2005 at 11:27 am
Meanwhile, ODALIS PEREZ is throwing a no-no in Coors Field East.
July 21, 2005 at 11:34 am
I’m going to take a nap.
July 21, 2005 at 11:34 am
Well K-evin is certainly underperforming, Klesko started off very hot, but has cooled off, but I wouldn’t consider him underperforming, maybe by dollar value sure, but not overall. The other two I was referring to, were Burroughs at third and Ramon behind the plate, especially now that he looks to be a shell of his former self because of his wrist and contract issues. For all the good he’s done recently, Bochy sure doesn’t seem to have much faith in DJ at third either since he has been lifted for the great Blum so far in the previous two games and Blum’s start today.
July 21, 2005 at 11:48 am
Nevin with the clutch leadoff single to start the 13-run rally in the 9th!
July 21, 2005 at 11:50 am
FARM REPORT: Chick had a good start … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_mobaax_1 … woulda been interesting if he coulda gone all 19 innings
July 21, 2005 at 5:49 pm
I’m almost glad they got shelled. It at least takes some of the sting out of what was one of the absolute dumbest moves I’ve ever heard of.
A guy bats in the top four of the lineup because he is one of your four best hitters. Why would you take the bat out of the hands of one of your four best hitters? Bochy should have to answer these questions. Why isn’t he held accountable?
