In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Dodgers (22 Jun 2005)
Wed, Jun 22, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Tim Stauffer (1-2, 4.10 ERA) vs D.J. Houlton (2-1, 5.77 ERA)
I’m pressed for time right now, so here’s your condensed analysis: Winning rocks.
Picking up where last year's version left off, the Ducksnorts 2008 Baseball Annual provides in-depth analysis of and commentary on the San Diego Padres. Get your copy today.

Nice improbably 4 game run. Neither the Twins or Dodgers are exactly on their games right now, but wins are wins.
I didn’t see the game, but read the box and re-cap and in-game arguments, I mean discussions. So it prefaced Nevin’s injury with “Padres received more bad news”, and of all the bad news to receive, I liked that news the best. If this does not lead to more Nady PA’s, I don’t know what will. Playing Sweeney against Lowe makes sense, but it almost looks like Bochy is out to squelch Nady out of personal animosity.
Here’s to hoping for Adam’s quick recovery.

Note to Geoff: I agree Nevin’s situation is complicated. Decent player with power and good history, not tradeable but not the best option at 1B and expensive. This does create an incentive for Bochy to play him and kind of hope his performance reaches his prior levels and his salary. But, at some point, you have to realize that is not working and start to use him more selectively (vs. LHP, against good historical match-ups).
If doing that is going to rile up Nevin, that is the manager’s job, to manage that. I really think baseball managers are more personality management than baseball strategy. Biases can lead to value-destroying baseball decisions, but, generally, the managers do OK. Too many bunts, steals, LIDR’s, but, generally, not destroying the team. But when a personality is between you and obvious strategy shift, you have to work through it. That’s your job.

Klesko at first, Nady in left…repeat

Klesko at first, Nady in left…repeat
You must give Nady time to see if he develops. Sweeny is a nice player but shown himself to be a good bench guy.
Klesko at first, Nady in left…repeat

Eaton, Hernandez to DL; Redding, McAnulty promoted:
http://www.signonsandiego.com/.....abled.html
June 22, 2005 at 4:04 pm
Hopefully, both will be out the minimum. Not much faith, despite some encouraging recent results, in either May or Redding as the 5th starter. And fun as it’s been to watch Fick, he’s overdue for a return to Planet Earth.
On the Jeckyll & Hyde Padres:
Current ytd OPS: .737 - 15th in NL
But in MAY: .801 - 1st in NL
And now JUNE: .646 - dead last and a shocking 55 pts behind next to last Mets’ .701
June 22, 2005 at 4:06 pm
sorry… that’s Jekyll
June 22, 2005 at 4:41 pm
WOW … McAnulty promoted! He’s been my favorite prospect since I saw him playing for the Storm at the end of last season … he puts hard wood on the ball! I hope he gets an AB on Friday night!
June 22, 2005 at 6:56 pm
Greetings, gents.
Burroughs in the 6-hole?
Interesting numbers on tonight’s Dodger pitcher DJ Houton: 45H (+ 16BB) in 34IP. Add in the 4 HBP and you’ve got a healthy 1.9 baserunners per inning.
June 22, 2005 at 7:14 pm
DR must think he’s Rickey Henderson.
June 22, 2005 at 7:17 pm
Fick’s double went further than DR’s home run.
June 22, 2005 at 7:18 pm
That’s 12 in a row for Gilly.
June 22, 2005 at 7:19 pm
Maybe they really were worried about Bochy’s contract situation.
June 22, 2005 at 7:20 pm
Richard, what do you mean?
June 22, 2005 at 7:20 pm
And the man with the 12th best OBP on the club, Sean, steps to the dish with two on and one out.
June 22, 2005 at 7:20 pm
Make that 6th best.
They announced before the game that Bochy had agreed to a 2 year extension.
June 22, 2005 at 7:21 pm
Damn Sean. Fielder’s Choice leaves us with first and third and two away. C’mon Greeney.
June 22, 2005 at 7:21 pm
It seems Nady will not sniff PT while Nevin is out. And I think Sweeney would be a better candidate for the two hole swapping out with Fick.
June 22, 2005 at 7:23 pm
I’d bat Fick cleanup…
June 22, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Thanks Richard, had not heard that. Good news I suppose. As much as I have trouble with Bochy, I just don’t know who would replace him that would be any different/better.
Plus it is fun to ***** about him.
June 22, 2005 at 7:31 pm
Anybody know what time the Feed is?
June 22, 2005 at 7:34 pm
Timmy is up in the zone today. Where’s the Stauffer from two starts ago?
June 22, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Whatz the infield single to third garbage? Sean, stop waving to Daddy and play the damn bag!
June 22, 2005 at 7:41 pm
What exactly is your complaint, Iced?
June 22, 2005 at 7:42 pm
I think Boch is a quality manager. He doesn’t have the in-game and skills of a Billy Martin, nor the roster-making intuition of **** Williams,
but his people-managing talents are above reproach. Ultimately, this will determine a manager’s long-term fate with an organization.
June 22, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Random: Sean has more fielding win shares than he does batting.
June 22, 2005 at 7:44 pm
Delete the “and” in the Billy martin part…
June 22, 2005 at 7:44 pm
Richard, nothing fancy. Just pitchers getting cheap infield singles in front of a chronically underachieving, often lazy third baseman really pisses me off.
Otherwise, no fancy complaints this evening.
And yourself?
June 22, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Did even Brooks Robinson ever accomplsh (?) that in a full season at 3B?
June 22, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Dave ran out of the box on tonight’s home run.
June 22, 2005 at 7:46 pm
I’l bet that Ken Reitz or Aurelio Rodriguez matched that at 3B. Richard?
June 22, 2005 at 7:48 pm
I doubt it, but Clete Boyer may have.
June 22, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Sean has almost four times as many FRAR than BRAR…
June 22, 2005 at 7:51 pm
Clete Boyer had more Fielding Runs than Batting Runs ever year but one and he played in 1725 games over his career.
June 22, 2005 at 7:52 pm
That should say “every.”
June 22, 2005 at 7:53 pm
To all Pizza (NOT!!) Feed attendees:
Hook up prior to the supposed Feed at The Field (http://www.thefieldirishpub.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/events.woa/wa/default.
It’s at 544 Fifth, with good eats, cold Guiness and Newcastle, and an all-ages policy. After the game, The Imperial House would appear to be the destination, according to David at Davidblizerblog.
Hope to meet many of you Friday night!
June 22, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Matt and Mud can’t think of any reason other than Kent not batting in front of Bonds for why his numbers this year aren’t as good as they were in 2000. I’ll have to check, but I’m pretty sure he was five years younger five years ago. Just a guess.
June 22, 2005 at 7:55 pm
How much faith do you have in those fielding numbers, Richard? I’m not saying they’re wrong, I’m just wondering from whence these metrics come. I’ll be honest, I hate to sift through defensive stats.
June 22, 2005 at 7:56 pm
How much faith? Not much. Fielding Stats suck.
June 22, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Damn, Kent’s numbers look good to me. At his age, and playing at Chavez Ravine, I’m guessing his stats are of historic relevence for a middle infielder.
June 22, 2005 at 7:58 pm
At last, the REAL Richard shows his face.
June 22, 2005 at 8:00 pm
Base hit Klesko. If we can’t beat a Rule 5 guy…
and Giles extended his streak to 12 straight times on base.
June 22, 2005 at 8:01 pm
3-1 count to Gilly…
June 22, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Giles hit that real hard. RBI triple for Giles!
June 22, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Giles has now reached in 13 consecutive plate appearances. He’s two away from the Major League record.
And you almost have to try not to score with a runner on third and less than two away.
June 22, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Giles really got around that one quickly. Just rocketed it out to right.
June 22, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Sweeney’s fouled off about four pitches, now…
June 22, 2005 at 8:07 pm
3-1 to Sean. It’d be nice if he could turn on one.
June 22, 2005 at 8:08 pm
Or a walk. That’s just as good.
June 22, 2005 at 8:12 pm
DJ needs to come through here. I’ll be surprised if he does.
June 22, 2005 at 8:13 pm
Wrong DJ came through.
June 22, 2005 at 8:15 pm
Houlton: 3.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR (71 pitches, 65% strikes)
Stauffer: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 0 HR (53 pitches, 66% strikes)
June 22, 2005 at 8:16 pm
At this rate, Houlton should only be good for one more inning. Stauffer ought to be good for 2-3 more…
June 22, 2005 at 8:18 pm
Has Choi taken a pitch tonight?
June 22, 2005 at 8:19 pm
Choi swung at six of the seven pitches he saw that AB.
June 22, 2005 at 8:21 pm
Seven in a row retired by Stauffer.
June 22, 2005 at 8:23 pm
Richard, you are carrying the group tonight. Unfortunately, I’m at work.
June 22, 2005 at 8:23 pm
Houlton can’t seem to find the strike zone tonight…
June 22, 2005 at 8:29 pm
Well, he IS a Rule 5 guy…
June 22, 2005 at 8:31 pm
Stauffer has already surpassed his 60th Percentile PECOTA Projection for VORP…
June 22, 2005 at 8:31 pm
Richard, your 3-2 prediction may yet come to fruition…
June 22, 2005 at 8:32 pm
If it does, I think we can all agree that Thursday is a lock for 4-3.
June 22, 2005 at 8:32 pm
I always thought it was nice that they named a projection system for a utility guy like Bill Pecota.
June 22, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Giants lead D-Backs 1-0. Do we know who we want to win that game???
June 22, 2005 at 8:36 pm
Stauffer: 5.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 0 HR, (83 pitches, 67% strikes)
June 22, 2005 at 8:37 pm
I’d like to see the Diamondbacks beat up on the Giants.
June 22, 2005 at 8:38 pm
Arizona will eventually go away, but I want San Francisco out of it and fast.
June 22, 2005 at 8:39 pm
Stauffer is second among NL rookies in VORP.
June 22, 2005 at 8:40 pm
Ryno hit that ball very hard. Nothing to show for it…
June 22, 2005 at 8:41 pm
Damn. Giles fails to reach base for the first time this series.
June 22, 2005 at 8:42 pm
I’m THINK I agree with that assessment, but I’m not sure the Giants have a prayer.
Better be careful what I say.
June 22, 2005 at 8:43 pm
“I’m think…”???
damn, I meant “I think”
June 22, 2005 at 8:44 pm
Sweeney looks like he belongs in the California League, tonight at least…
June 22, 2005 at 8:45 pm
Sweeney has caught Nevin-itis over at 1B.
June 22, 2005 at 8:46 pm
Nobody home but you and me, Richard.
Where’d they all go?!?
June 22, 2005 at 8:46 pm
I hate Werth.
June 22, 2005 at 8:47 pm
Werth for his career has a .038 HR/AB…
June 22, 2005 at 8:48 pm
Manager Bruce Bochy agreed to a two-year contract extension. His deal had been set to expire at season’s end. … The Padres placed RHP Adam Eaton and C Ramon Hernandez on the 15-day DL. To take their roster spots, activated RHP Tim Redding and recalled OF-INF Paul McAnulty from Double-A Mobile. … 1B Phil Nevin is expected to be out four to five days with a strained oblique muscle.
June 22, 2005 at 8:48 pm
Klesko almost had that ball. Wow.
June 22, 2005 at 8:49 pm
I think they should put Phil on the DL.
June 22, 2005 at 8:49 pm
Oh, ****.
According to Coleman:
“That’s hit way back… and that ball is… (long pause)
No..(pause) Yeah.
(uncomfortably long pause)… a home run.”
Well, he’s really old.
June 22, 2005 at 8:51 pm
Lance, that was unquestionably the worst home run call of all time.
“And ‘boom’ goes the dynamite” would have been better.
June 22, 2005 at 8:51 pm
Richard, putting Nevin on the DL would not put his salary on the DL.
Is Eaton’s DL stay retroactive to a particular date?
If nobody knows, Lee Sinins or Transaction Guy will.
June 22, 2005 at 8:52 pm
He broadcasts like old people f—: slow and sloppy.
June 22, 2005 at 8:52 pm
Sweeney removed for Ojeda…
June 22, 2005 at 8:53 pm
Brian, I am originator of the BEST home run call: DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!DONG!!!
I love Jerry, and forgive him his naps.
June 22, 2005 at 8:54 pm
Great play by Chris Hammond. I didn’t know he could throw that hard!
June 22, 2005 at 8:55 pm
What did the ump say to Kent?
June 22, 2005 at 8:55 pm
Kevin, old people may **** slow, but it’s generally with great precision. After all, it may be their last time.
I’d throw Kent out of the game just for his mustache, personally.
June 22, 2005 at 8:57 pm
Jeff Kent has been “phased out” as George Carlin would say.
June 22, 2005 at 8:58 pm
Jeff Kent should be thrown out of baseball. Barry Bonds is more likeable.
June 22, 2005 at 8:59 pm
Sorry, Lance. He’s horrid.
June 22, 2005 at 8:59 pm
DJ screws up a double-play, but Khalil salvaged one out. How did he do that? Wow.
June 22, 2005 at 9:01 pm
DJ must die. Seriously, let the fans stone him to death in the midle of the field. And the inning ends.
DJ, you misshapen little troll!
June 22, 2005 at 9:01 pm
Jeff Kent was obviously safe, btw. The fact that he got run was just a bonus…
June 22, 2005 at 9:02 pm
Damian Jackson will probably win this game.
June 22, 2005 at 9:02 pm
“you gotta see it” - that’s what he said…
June 22, 2005 at 9:03 pm
Yeah, Brian, he’s become imcompetant.
If the sane happened to your father, would you replace him with a NEW dad?!?
I’ve been listening to Coleman for over 30 years, and it’s hard to let go.
June 22, 2005 at 9:05 pm
The same, the saMe!!!
damn.
June 22, 2005 at 9:05 pm
Jerry Coleman is your father?
June 22, 2005 at 9:05 pm
No, it might be ’sane’ — you’ve never met my Dad.
June 22, 2005 at 9:05 pm
I really don’t understand why Miguel Ojeda is in the game…
June 22, 2005 at 9:05 pm
DR is a WINNING MACHINE, I am a TYPO MACHINE.
June 22, 2005 at 9:06 pm
Sane and Coleman should not be in the same sentence.
June 22, 2005 at 9:06 pm
MLB GameDay is half an inning behind…
June 22, 2005 at 9:07 pm
What I’ve never understood is why they let the incredibly capable Bob Chandler go and are still holding on to Coleman.
June 22, 2005 at 9:08 pm
No, Jerry is not my father, and I’ll start praying for the sanity of fathers everywhere.
4-3. And boy, am I PISSED…
June 22, 2005 at 9:08 pm
MLB Gameday struugles when unusual events (like an ejection) happen.
June 22, 2005 at 9:09 pm
Matty V. called a 5-3 play a “groundout to second.”
June 22, 2005 at 9:09 pm
Kevin and Brian, do not dis the sage wisdom of the Jerry.
June 22, 2005 at 9:09 pm
I am a father and, trust me, having children is not the expressway to sanity.
June 22, 2005 at 9:09 pm
Pizza (not) Feed starts when the gates open @ 5pm … email from Paul Swayden just went out @ 820pm this evening …
June 22, 2005 at 9:10 pm
Matt got it right, sort of… it WAS to an infielder.
June 22, 2005 at 9:14 pm
Wow I like what Bochy’s done with the lineup since I have been gone. If he needed a right handed bat to replace Sweeney at first, why not Nady? *Sigh*
June 22, 2005 at 9:14 pm
Ojeda is in the No. 9 spot. Can we get him lower?
June 22, 2005 at 9:14 pm
I really wonder what Nady did to offend Boch.
June 22, 2005 at 9:15 pm
I’d prefer he play left end.
June 22, 2005 at 9:15 pm
That’s left end of the bench, of course…
June 22, 2005 at 9:16 pm
Nady is probably upset about the two-year extension Bochy got.
June 22, 2005 at 9:17 pm
We really have no excuse not to come back against this bunch. The Dodgers current lineup is pathetic.
June 22, 2005 at 9:18 pm
But then again so is Bochy’s irrational love for Ojeda.
June 22, 2005 at 9:18 pm
Miguel Ojeda is now batting .141 according to ESPN…
June 22, 2005 at 9:18 pm
Ojeda should never swing until there are two strikes.
June 22, 2005 at 9:19 pm
Done! Friday at The Field (544 Fifth Ave) anytime after 3:00. Then onward to the Supposed Feed. By then we should have f
