Nice improbably 4 game run. Neither the Twins or Dodgers are exactly on their games right now, but wins are wins.

I didn’t see the game, but read the box and re-cap and in-game arguments, I mean discussions. So it prefaced Nevin’s injury with “Padres received more bad news”, and of all the bad news to receive, I liked that news the best. If this does not lead to more Nady PA’s, I don’t know what will. Playing Sweeney against Lowe makes sense, but it almost looks like Bochy is out to squelch Nady out of personal animosity.

Here’s to hoping for Adam’s quick recovery.

Note to Geoff: I agree Nevin’s situation is complicated. Decent player with power and good history, not tradeable but not the best option at 1B and expensive. This does create an incentive for Bochy to play him and kind of hope his performance reaches his prior levels and his salary. But, at some point, you have to realize that is not working and start to use him more selectively (vs. LHP, against good historical match-ups).

If doing that is going to rile up Nevin, that is the manager’s job, to manage that. I really think baseball managers are more personality management than baseball strategy. Biases can lead to value-destroying baseball decisions, but, generally, the managers do OK. Too many bunts, steals, LIDR’s, but, generally, not destroying the team. But when a personality is between you and obvious strategy shift, you have to work through it. That’s your job.

You must give Nady time to see if he develops. Sweeny is a nice player but shown himself to be a good bench guy.

Hopefully, both will be out the minimum. Not much faith, despite some encouraging recent results, in either May or Redding as the 5th starter. And fun as it’s been to watch Fick, he’s overdue for a return to Planet Earth.

On the Jeckyll & Hyde Padres:
Current ytd OPS: .737 – 15th in NL
But in MAY: .801 – 1st in NL
And now JUNE: .646 – dead last and a shocking 55 pts behind next to last Mets’ .701

    Greetings, gents.

    Burroughs in the 6-hole?

Interesting numbers on tonight’s Dodger pitcher DJ Houton: 45H (+ 16BB) in 34IP. Add in the 4 HBP and you’ve got a healthy 1.9 baserunners per inning.

  25. Lance

I think Boch is a quality manager. He doesn’t have the in-game and skills of a Billy Martin, nor the roster-making intuition of Dick Williams,
but his people-managing talents are above reproach. Ultimately, this will determine a manager’s long-term fate with an organization.

Matt and Mud can’t think of any reason other than Kent not batting in front of Bonds for why his numbers this year aren’t as good as they were in 2000. I’ll have to check, but I’m pretty sure he was five years younger five years ago. Just a guess.

If the Padres manage to come back, the win would be completely in spite of Bochy.

Pinch-hitting with McAnulty instead of Nady.

Having Dennys Reyes instead of anyone else pitch the ninth.

Now he’s bringing in Linebrink. WHY IN THE HELL didn’t he bring in Linebrink to start the ninth if he hadn’t conceded the game?

  220. LynchMob

John Sickels posted this comment on his blog (www.minorleagueball.com) on Tuesday …

OF Paul McAnulty at Double-A Mobile in the San Diego system. Hitting .300/.372/.490 with 10 homers, 26 walks, and 57 strikeouts in 66 games, 253 at-bats. McAnulty is the opposite of guys like Dukes or Francoeur. He isn’t a great athlete, was just a 12th-round pick (out of Long Beach State in 2002), and is already 24 years old. But he hit well in A-ball, and has made a successful transition to Double-A this year. His walk rate is down compared to what he did in the low minors (he drew 88 walks last year but is on course for just over half that this year). Isolated Discipline is .072, compared to .107 last year. But Mobile isn’t an easy place to hit, so overall I think the Padres have to be pleased. His defensive limitations and lack of speed are a limiting factor in his ability to get playing time, but I can see him becoming a successful “have bat, will travel” guy.

I keep expecting to see that Barfield has started to draw walks and/or hit for power… Maybe one day.
