In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Dodgers (20 Jun 2005)
Mon, Jun 20, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (5-2, 2.79 ERA) vs Brad Penny (3-3, 4.02 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | Padres.com
So. Where were you when Dave Roberts homered off Johan Santana? And what the heck got into Darrell May? I don’t know how it all happened, but the Padres managed to win the series at Minnesota. Here are the pitching lines in the rubber game, which I sheepishly admit I’d conceded before it even began:
IP H R ER HR BB SO
May 6.0 3 1 1 1 0 4
Santana 6.2 5 4 4 1 3 4
Santana, it seems, may have been distracted by what he and Twins manager Ron Gardenhire considered an inconsistent strike zone. Funny, I don’t remember hearing any complaints from May. It could be me, but I’m thinking if a journeyman pitcher can live with the plate umpire’s calls, then so can the defending Cy Young Award winner.
Anyway, the Padres return home leading the NL West by 3 1/2 games. For as bad a road trip as the Friars had, they didn’t really lose any ground. The Dodgers come to town for four games starting Monday night. The first game features two right-handers who can bring the heat. Peavy looks to break a personal two-game losing streak, while the oft-injured Penny makes his second start for the Dodgers since signing a 3-year, $25M contract extension.
AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current Dodgers 75 .187 .238 .267
Penny vs current Padres 109 .376 .453 .606
Phil Nevin (.500/.500/1.083 in 12 AB) and Ryan Klesko (.471/.550/.765 in 17 AB) are leading the charge against Penny. Several additional Padres have had success in more limited playing time. Penny also has one of the more extreme reverse platoon splits you’ll see:
AB BA OBP SLG
vs LHB 135 .215 .248 .259
vs RHB 141 .340 .356 .553
That split hasn’t been there in the past, so who knows. For the record, Xavier Nady bats right handed. I’m just saying.
On the other side, Jeff Kent (.273/.333/.545 in 11 AB) and Cesar Izturis (.333/.400/.444 in 18 AB) are the only Dodgers who have done anything against Peavy. So far Bruce Bochy’s decision to move Peavy back a day is looking pretty good.
This is going to be a crucial series against the Dodgers, who still appear to be more of a threat than Arizona. Here’s hoping the Pads can build off the momentum of those final two games in Minnesota and firmly re-establish themselves as the team to beat in the NL West.

Perhaps May is used to not getting borderline calls and being forced to adjust whereas the defending Cy Young Award winner expects everything within a foot of the zone to be called a strike?
June 20, 2005 at 10:53 am
are you kidding, Goff, terrible month on june yet it hasn’t hurt us. This makes me believe this is a lucky season for us. Now, trade that whining hacker Phil Nevin, stick Nady in left and K at first and lets get on with the show…

Dodgers are injury-ravaged and not getting timely hitting. The only good thing they have going for them now is the starters they do have operable are starting to turn it around a bit (Weaver got his ERA below 5.00 for the first time since April). But the bullpen has been atrocious, and the random garbage appearing at short since Izturis was injured is simply inadequate defensively.
June 20, 2005 at 2:58 pm
From one who was at the game on Sunday (Twins vs Padres)…
I wasn’t sitting behind home plate second guessing the umpire, but from what I could see, Santana and the rest of the Twins organization had every right to be fed up with the home plate ump.
I’d guess that the reason May didn’t complain was either the ump was calling consistently for 1/2 the innings or he was just as fed up, but saw the benefit of making a jab at Santana.
To Richard, the first poster, perhaps you’ve not seen the game. It’s not a matter of being within the zone or outside the zone. The borders of the zone were changing and as someone who makes a living on those borders, Santana got burned by the ump. I watched, as over two and 2/3 innings, the zone got narrower and narrower.
As another side note, Santana probably had more nerves going for him on Sunday too… his father was in attendance for Father’s Day.

Watching the game on tv, it appeared that Santana was getting squeezed. He’s not used to that and it rattled him. It happens to guys like May all the time.
June 20, 2005 at 6:38 pm
Fick behind the plate, Nady on the bench.
June 20, 2005 at 6:44 pm
At least Fick is behind the plate.
June 20, 2005 at 6:45 pm
Ideally Fick, Sweeney, Giles, Klesko, Roberts, Nady, Greene & Blum would start each night (based on those currently available to play).
June 20, 2005 at 6:46 pm
Fick’s DT line is .421/.470/.711. How long until he regresses?
June 20, 2005 at 6:48 pm
Sweeney’s is the next best at .287/.425/.497.
June 20, 2005 at 7:08 pm
That was a real nice catch by Ryno.
June 20, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Peavy is being very careful with Drew.
June 20, 2005 at 7:09 pm
Three up, three down.
June 20, 2005 at 7:12 pm
Klesko made a couple nice plays out there, although the first was thanks in part to the Burroughs shift they had working for Izturis.
June 20, 2005 at 7:13 pm
Looks like Penny may get out of the first as easily as Peavy did.
June 20, 2005 at 7:14 pm
The line is even on this game. What a joke.
June 20, 2005 at 7:14 pm
Quick 1st inning…game will be over by 8:30 at this pace..
June 20, 2005 at 7:16 pm
Here’s is my batting order complaint, sponsored by Richard. Giles, Klesko and Nevin should always be in that order. It’s a small thing, but you want Giles getting the most at-bats of the three, then Klesko, then Nevin.
June 20, 2005 at 7:17 pm
You’d actually rather Nevin get even fewer PA’s, but he’s had success in the past against Penny.
June 20, 2005 at 7:18 pm
Penny should be good for 12 innings at the rate he’s going.
June 20, 2005 at 7:18 pm
That ball traveled further than I expected.
June 20, 2005 at 7:18 pm
wow..nice catch by Giles…
June 20, 2005 at 7:19 pm
Peavy got a little cute there against Kent, and it almost cost him. Both pitchers look very good so far.
June 20, 2005 at 7:19 pm
That’s why I had Nevin third in that order. I know Bochy will not move him lower than fifth.
June 20, 2005 at 7:20 pm
Another K for Peavy.
June 20, 2005 at 7:20 pm
Pure filth. That pitch is unhittable.
June 20, 2005 at 7:21 pm
Richard … what ball? Some of us aren’t watching the game …
June 20, 2005 at 7:22 pm
3 K’s.
June 20, 2005 at 7:22 pm
OMG, Peavy has it going. Great pitch to finish off Choi.
June 20, 2005 at 7:22 pm
The “deep fly ball to right field.”
June 20, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Peavy only threw Choi one strike that AB.
June 20, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Peavy has it going. As much as I don’t like the Dodgers, I think Vin Scully should broadcast every baseball game. Forever.
June 20, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Channel 4 has Peavy’s fastball at 92-95 mph. It’s moving pretty good tonight.
June 20, 2005 at 7:23 pm
Definitely looks like Peavy has it going on tonight…
June 20, 2005 at 7:24 pm
Numbers looking good thru top of 2nd …
Pitches-strikes - B Penny 8-7; J Peavy 28-17.
Ground balls-fly balls - B Penny 2-1; J Peavy 0-3.
Batters faced - B Penny 3; J Peavy 6.
June 20, 2005 at 7:24 pm
14 pitches per inning for Peavy. Ought to be good for 7-8 innings at that rate.
June 20, 2005 at 7:24 pm
Kevin, agreed on Scully. He’s the best I’ve ever heard calling any sport.
June 20, 2005 at 7:25 pm
Even better than Matt Vasgersian?
June 20, 2005 at 7:26 pm
Agree with you there Kevin about Scully. He sure makes most announcers sound like amateurs.
June 20, 2005 at 7:26 pm
Base hit Giles and that AB almost matched Penny’s first inning pitch total.
June 20, 2005 at 7:27 pm
Penny’s first inning pitch total has been surpassed here in the second before recording an out.
June 20, 2005 at 7:28 pm
Penny challenged Nevin and got the swinging strikeout.
June 20, 2005 at 7:29 pm
Scully seems to know more about the opposing team than that team’s announcers.
June 20, 2005 at 7:30 pm
Nice plate appearance by Burroughs so far.
June 20, 2005 at 7:31 pm
Plus Scully rarely if ever has anything negative to say about either team.
June 20, 2005 at 7:31 pm
RISP for Greene w/2 outs…
June 20, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Vin has the knack of making every single pitch sound as dramatic as the 9th inning of the 7th game of the World Series
June 20, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Just tuned in to see the Choi SO and as I opened the comments box, there were already 41 comments… - Nice! Way to represent!
June 20, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Greene has never seen Penny before.
June 20, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Penny demonstrating how *not* to field a ground ball hit back up the middle.
June 20, 2005 at 7:33 pm
Well guys, I’ll peak back later, but I have to get ready for tomorrow… - Man - tip the cap Greene. Could be a short night…
June 20, 2005 at 7:33 pm
I disagree, Geoff. Dodger pitchers should always try to catch the ball with their bare hand.
June 20, 2005 at 7:33 pm
Now he has. And it was not fun for him.
June 20, 2005 at 7:34 pm
They made Penny throw more than twice as many pitches that inning. He’s now on the same pace as Peavy.
June 20, 2005 at 7:34 pm
Thanks, Peter, for stopping by. Catch ya later!
June 20, 2005 at 7:35 pm
Is it my imagination or has Peavy had a lot of 1-0 counts?
June 20, 2005 at 7:36 pm
4th K.
June 20, 2005 at 7:36 pm
Peavy has started 4 of 8 with a ball.
June 20, 2005 at 7:38 pm
That’s five, now.
June 20, 2005 at 7:38 pm
Nasty. Just nasty.
June 20, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Both K’s and batters started with a ball.
June 20, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Todays’ Channel 4 poll: “Which AL team caught your attention during interleague play?”
http://www.4sd.com/poll_today.php
White Sox have a commanding lead so far. They forgot the obvious choice: “None; interleague games stink.”
June 20, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Now if only we can nick some runs off of Penny. Otherwise this is going to come down to the 8th and 9th.
June 20, 2005 at 7:40 pm
Down to 13 pitches per inning.
June 20, 2005 at 7:40 pm
Yeah, the novelty of interleague wore off on me a LONG time ago, as soon as they announced that Seattle was our “natural” rival.
June 20, 2005 at 7:41 pm
Did anybody punch ballots with the Mighty 1090?
June 20, 2005 at 7:41 pm
DJ got robbed.
June 20, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Damn. That’s a fine catch by Drew.
June 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm
Interleague play stinks on two levels. First, it just stinks. Second, the Padres are no good at it.
June 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm
Scully just said we play the Dodgers 7 of the next 10. Wow.
June 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm
Penny has thrown first-pitch strikes to 9 of 10.
June 20, 2005 at 7:44 pm
That was an interesting strike two call.
June 20, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Roberts is making him work a bit.
June 20, 2005 at 7:47 pm
A nine pitch at-bat. If you’re going to make an out. Make it like that.
June 20, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Penny and Peavy both pitched in the MWL at age 19 (different years):
IP H/9 BB/9 SO/9 ERA
Penny 118.2 6.90 3.26 8.80 2.73
Peavy 133.2 7.20 3.57 11.04 2.90
June 20, 2005 at 7:49 pm
Geoff, what was the Padres record with the virus and without it?
June 20, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Izturis is being a nuisance.
June 20, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Six K’s.
June 20, 2005 at 7:50 pm
Holy smokes, he got Izturis to swing at that? Yikes.
June 20, 2005 at 7:51 pm
When you swing at a pitch that ends up behind you…
June 20, 2005 at 7:51 pm
Repko dropping down a bunt? What in the Bob Brenly is going on here?
June 20, 2005 at 7:52 pm
That’s seven.
June 20, 2005 at 7:52 pm
At least Repko isn’t the catcher?
June 20, 2005 at 7:52 pm
That wasn’t a question.
June 20, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Jake’s about to lose the perfect game…
June 20, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Kevin, I’m not sure about virus/no virus. I think it started right around the beginning of the month but I can’f remember the exact date.
June 20, 2005 at 7:53 pm
3-1 breaking ball.
June 20, 2005 at 7:54 pm
No way! EIGHT Punch Outs!
June 20, 2005 at 7:54 pm
Not yet. Eight strikeouts through four. Peavy is back.
June 20, 2005 at 7:54 pm
It was the day after Peavy’s first loss.
June 20, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Peavy is amazing. I am glad he’s back. He gives the whole team a shot of confidence.
June 20, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Peavy is pitching a gem. Holy Hershiser!
June 20, 2005 at 7:56 pm
I still think, even though he would never admit it, that Peavy was under the weather that loss against the Brewers. There is no other explanation for his meltdown.
June 20, 2005 at 7:56 pm
Peav needs some run support and now.
June 20, 2005 at 7:57 pm
93 posts now…
4.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 SO 56 pitches
dare we hope? - if someone jinxes this is - I’ll personally find a VooDoo doctor to put a hex on you!
June 20, 2005 at 7:57 pm
I agree, Bruce. It had to be affecting him.
June 20, 2005 at 7:57 pm
No hexes.
June 20, 2005 at 7:58 pm
Bob!
June 20, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Man, I love the Fick signing. He is one of those good, cheap guys that teams like the Pads need.
June 20, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Klesko makes up for Fick’s solid AB with an ugly one.
June 20, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Fick is batting .378 in 45 at-bats.
June 20, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Just got here, just started listening to the radio broadcast.
June 20, 2005 at 8:02 pm
That’ll score Fick!
June 20, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Welcome, Lance. 1-0 Friars. That should be enough.
June 20, 2005 at 8:02 pm
Finally, a hit and run I can get behind.
June 20, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Giles drives Fick home!!!
And Tim Flannery WILL NOT TELL ME THE ******* SCORE!!!!!!
June 20, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Giles has had two real nice at-bats against Penny. And the chants of “Beat LA” begin.
June 20, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Great AB by Giles. Scores Fick from first because the runner was going. Bochy risks the strike-em-out-throw-em-out DP, and it pays off.
June 20, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Sorry ’bout the language, but STILL NO SCORE!!!!
June 20, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Great play by Choi.
June 20, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Choi clanks one. Runners at the corners, one out. Let’s get some more runs.
June 20, 2005 at 8:04 pm

They’re socring that a hit? Ah, it’s good to be home.
