In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Tigers (16 Jun 2005)

Thu, Jun 16, 2005Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 10:05 a.m., PT
television: none
matchup: Woody Williams (2-4, 4.56 ERA) vs Jeremy Bonderman (7-4, 4.05 ERA)

The city of Toronto continues to impress. Excellent dim sum in the afternoon, exquisite sushi in the evening. Another ballgame, this time with the roof open for the first couple of innings. Rogers Centre is a much nicer venue with the roof open; unfortunately the enjoyment was fleeting, as the weather had other ideas. Good game, though, as the home team took the final stanza of their series against St. Louis, 5-2.

We’re off to Niagara Falls today, so again you’re on your own. Thursday’s game is real early and not on TV. I stink at faking enthusiasm so I won’t bother. Here’s hoping for better days soon.

Afraid of Dim Sum? The best part is not having any idea what you are eating.

Oh. I think I see your point.

Safe to assume that Cooperstown (a couple hours’ drive from Niagara Falls) is your next destination? If not, shame on you.

cannot figure out how to columnize here but the reasons for the June swoon are a lot simpler to explain than long charts. Just look at the basic stats for June and tell me how many of the Padres are even close to their career averages? Klesko or maybe Sweeney? Certainly no one else.

    Batting Statistics
    JUNE

    Khalil Greene .224 .224 .286 .510
    R. Hernandez .229 .229 .333 .563
    Phil Nevin .233 .298 .326 .623
    Geoff Blum .214 .250 .238 .488
    Brian Giles .175 .283 .350 .633
    Ryan Klesko .306 .405 .417 .821
    S. Burroughs .278 .333 .389 .722
    D. Jackson .192 .185 .192 .377
    Dave Roberts .250 .308 .250 .558
    Xavier Nady .208 .269 .375 .644
    Mark Sweeney .250 .368 .500 .868

    its pretty self explanatory.

I got my game tickets for the BP Pizza Feed next Friday (6/24) … who’s gonna be there?

I haven’t gotten a reply asking for details about where/when the time with Towers will be … anybody know?

Game time is 7pm … figure event with Towers to be ~6ish? Might there be a place for a Ducksnorts-pre-BP-Pizza-Feed gathering?

I’m flying in @ 2pm … and I might just walk to Petco from the airport … figure I could get there by 4ish …

Lookin’ forward to it … surely things will turn around by then …

BTW, whatever happened to the shillelagh?

I have been traveling for work, so a bit less connected to the games, but I love that we can play like a AAA team and still be a over game in first. This team’s offense is not stellar, but it is a lot better than the first half of June, so I am hoping we can pull it out.

Just a completely random idea, but I would argue that the Padre performance has thus far tracked Jay Payton’s performance last year as a Padre:

OPS by Month for Payton in 2004

April: .674 (not very good, kind of slow start)
May: .969 (Towers looking like a genius)
    June: .430 (absurdly abmissmal)

So, what does the rest of the year hold in store for us?

    July: .523 (horrid)
    August: .583 (plain awful)
Sep/Oct: .930 (great; where’ve you been all season?)

And, in keeping with my new awareness of Bochy’s fondness of running out poor performing players despite their bad hitting, just guess which month Payton had the most PA’s? Good guess: June.

Lance, we had dim sum here:
    http://www.metropolitan.com/lwh/

Pretty insane praise from good sources so we went for it. All dim sum is ordered from a menu; there are no carts, so you know exactly what you are getting ahead of time.

Brian, no I didn’t make it to Cooperstown. We were on a bus tour that only went as far as Niagara. Besides, I’m waiting until a certain former Padre is in the HOF before visiting again. ;-)

    Lynchmob,

Last year for the “pizza feed” we went in as soon as the gates opened and the event was on a patio, I think up on the third deck. I believe this year weekend games open up 2.5 hours early, so we’ll probably go in about 4:35. I haven’t heard yet where in the park it will be, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was in the same venue. Are your tickets on the third deck?

  19. LynchMob Says:

My tickets are Section 302, Row 15.

    The tickets give seat#s (4,5,6,7) … and also a “Seat Location” (10) … what’s a “Seat Location”? What is Seat Location #10?

ps. My print-from-home ticket has an ad for a “tour of PETCO Park” … anyone done that? How much does it cost? Is it worth it? Thanks for comments …

OK, I found info on the web about the PETCO tour … http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com....._tours.jsp … still interested in any feedback from any of you that have done the tour …

  21. Pat Says:

I took the tour last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. From what I gather it can vary somewhat. For example, we saw the clubhouse, but someone else told me they did not get to see it on their tour. I’d say it’s well worth it to see the park behind the scenes. Highlights or our tour: clubhouse, on the field and in the Pads dugout, and the press box.
