In-Game Discussion: Padres vs Rockies (2 May 2005)
Mon, May 2, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Adam Eaton (2-1, 2.93 ERA) vs Jeff Francis (1-0, 4.37 ERA)
game previews: ESPN | CBS SportsLine | SI | Padres.com
And in come the Rockies. SI shows the Padres starting an outfield of Miguel Ojeda in LF, Adam Hyzdu in CF, and Xavier Nady in RF. Hyzdu is leading off. If this is a joke, it’s not funny; if it isn’t a joke, it’s even less funny.
AB BA OBP SLG
Eaton vs current Rockies 136 .301 .361 .485
Francis vs current Padres 29 .276 .364 .586
Todd Helton (.333/.453/.595 in 42 AB) is the killer; big shock there. Todd Greene (.400/.455/.600 in 10 AB) and Clint Barmes (.500/.500/1.000 in 6 AB) also have had success in more limited duty.
Francis is making just his 12th big-league start. None of the current Padres has more than six at-bats against him. The injured Khalil Greene has the only two homers. Inexplicably, Francis has been much more effective at Coors (2.55 ERA) than away from it (6.49 ERA) throughout his brief career.
I’ll be at Petco tonight, in some pretty sweet seats courtesy of my wife’s company. Pix tomorrow or shortly thereafter. Gotta run…

Bochy has finally lost it.
Tonight’s lineup:
Hyzdu, CF
Loretta, 2B
Nevin, 1B
Hernandez, C
Ojeda, LF
Nady, RF
Burroughs, 3B
Garcia, SS
Eaton, P
May 2, 2005 at 6:33 pm
Hyzdu has a career OBP of .314 and he’s leading off.
May 2, 2005 at 6:34 pm
Also, Hyzdu’s OBP over the last three years against LHPs is .310 or .023 points lower than against RHPs.
May 2, 2005 at 6:40 pm
Btw, even if the Padres win, that would not make Bochy right. It would make him lucky.
May 2, 2005 at 7:07 pm
Eaton, after only one batter, looks to have good stuff.
May 2, 2005 at 7:08 pm
Went to 0-2 against the first two batters.
May 2, 2005 at 7:09 pm
3-0 to Helton. Just walk him.
May 2, 2005 at 7:10 pm
That should be labeled an IBB. He gave him nothing (and rightfully so).
May 2, 2005 at 7:10 pm
The lineup is a joke. I can’t believe Ojeda is playing left. Ryno is not that bad against lefties. Plus his defense is not bad enough to justify starting Ojeda in place of him. I fear Bochy is outsmarting himself.
May 2, 2005 at 7:11 pm
Eaton started each of the three hitters he intended to pitch to with a strike.
May 2, 2005 at 7:13 pm
Eaton’s been a pleasant surprise so far this season. I am hoping he can build on his solid start.
May 2, 2005 at 7:21 pm
Odd: Francis allows a higher OBP to lefties.
May 2, 2005 at 7:26 pm
Eaton’s got himself in a bit a trouble. It’ll be interesting to see if he can get out of it.
May 2, 2005 at 7:27 pm
Four pitch walk. He got squeezed, but still.
May 2, 2005 at 7:28 pm
Six straight balls, now.
May 2, 2005 at 7:29 pm
DOUBLE PLAY! No?! Damnit!
May 2, 2005 at 7:31 pm
That was an out and an OBVIOUS one. That was a horrible, horrible call. It cost the Padres one run just now and who knows how many more. Damnit!
May 2, 2005 at 7:39 pm
That blown call cost the Padres 2 runs and seven pitches.
May 2, 2005 at 7:42 pm
All in favor of tarring and feathering Jim Reynolds?
Ay!
I’d also consider a public flogging.
May 2, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Nice hit by Ojeda, especially after the 0-2 count. Well done.
May 2, 2005 at 7:43 pm
Too bad Ramon Hernandez runs like a catcher.
May 2, 2005 at 7:45 pm
Nady needs to put the ball in play.
May 2, 2005 at 7:46 pm
Sacks are loaded after Francis walks Nady with none out.
May 2, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Is there anyone you’d rather see up with RISP than Sean right now?
May 2, 2005 at 7:47 pm
No, Richard, there really isn’t. And look they scored. It wasn’t pretty but it was effective.
May 2, 2005 at 7:48 pm
Francis is erratic. Garcia can’t give in. Make him throw strikes.
May 2, 2005 at 7:49 pm
They gave the intentional pass to Garcia. I’d rather have Eaton up than Garcia.
May 2, 2005 at 7:51 pm
2-2 to Eaton. Nice job checking his swing there.
May 2, 2005 at 7:51 pm
I think I’d rather have Eaton lead off than Hyzdu.
May 2, 2005 at 7:52 pm
Hyzdu has three career Grand Slams in 17 chances. That’s half of his hits with the sacks loaded.
May 2, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Just out in front and he just missed #4.
May 2, 2005 at 7:54 pm
Bases clearing double! You are one lucky man, Bruce Bochy!
May 2, 2005 at 8:00 pm
Just got here. Maybe Bochy tried the old Billy Martin trick where he pulled the lineup out of a hat — literally.
May 2, 2005 at 8:01 pm
Nice conversation, Richard
Any chance Klesko and/or Roberts are hurt (which would explain Ojeda in LF and Hyzdu in CF)?
Still wouldn’t explain Hyzdu in the leadoff spot … that is BAD / WRONG … and Bochy is looking lucky …
But stop dis’ing Garcia … I saw him a couple of times @ Peoria and he put good wood on the ball every AB …
We just found out why Eaton didn’t pitch to Helton the first time …
May 2, 2005 at 8:03 pm
Why did the Padres decide to pitch to Helton this time? I’ve never understood their refusal to take the bat out of a guy’s hands completely.
May 2, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Thanks, LM. Boch just wanted as many right-handed bats as he could fit in the lineup.
May 2, 2005 at 8:04 pm
I like the fact that he shook up the lineup. They haven’t been hitting at all.
May 2, 2005 at 8:04 pm
Garcia has looked horrendous since being called up. Small sample size and whatnot, but color me unimpressed.
May 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm
Richard, you might be on to an “organizational philosophy” (ie. don’t ‘take the bat out of a guy’s hands completely’) … what your comment reminded me of is that I seem to recall that Barry Bonds has the most HRs vs Padres …
May 2, 2005 at 8:05 pm
I like the idea of a shake-up, but consider putting Ojeda in left and Hyzdu in center nuts. That being said, they both had big doubles in the second inning.
May 2, 2005 at 8:07 pm
Only Loretta, Burroughs and Eaton have failed to reach base following the Nevin single.
May 2, 2005 at 8:08 pm
I would not only walk Bonds every time he comes up to bat, if I thought I could get away with it, I’d plunk him every fifth time.
May 2, 2005 at 8:10 pm
Ejections: San Diego Padres Manager Bruce Bochy ejected by 1B umpire Jim Reynolds.
Umpires: HP: Brian Runge, 1B: Charlie Reliford, 2B: Angel Hernandez, 3B: Greg Gibson.
Hey, where’d Reynolds go?
May 2, 2005 at 8:11 pm
Nady just missed a 2-run home run foul. “just missed” = “by ten feet”
Just thought I’d clarify.
May 2, 2005 at 8:12 pm
Yeah, and Burroughs and Loretta are regulars. Maybe they need to grab some bench.
May 2, 2005 at 8:12 pm
Maybe Reynolds was summarily executed and I missed it. One can hope.
May 2, 2005 at 8:12 pm
Burroughs drove in a run on his ground ball, at least.
May 2, 2005 at 8:13 pm
I’d really appreciate it if the Padres could put this game out of reach before 9pm. I would hate to miss 24.
May 2, 2005 at 8:13 pm
It’s encouraging to see Nady taking walks.
May 2, 2005 at 8:15 pm
Geez, Nady almost got himself thrown out…
How do you swing at the first pitch after the way Francis pitched that inning? Damnit, Garcia…
May 2, 2005 at 8:16 pm
What was Bochy ejected for?
May 2, 2005 at 8:16 pm
Both teams have more runs than hits. Wow.
May 2, 2005 at 8:17 pm
He was ejected after the first base umpire gave the Rockies two runs and forced Eaton to throw an extra seven pitches. Bochy took issue with that.
May 2, 2005 at 8:18 pm
I see. Probably didn’t hurt to try to light a fire under the team either.
May 2, 2005 at 8:19 pm
1st and 3rd with no outs. Crap.
May 2, 2005 at 8:21 pm
1st and 3rd with one out and the pitcher up. This might not be so bad.
May 2, 2005 at 8:21 pm
‘Course, it looks like Adam wants to walk him.
May 2, 2005 at 8:23 pm
Observation: both Vasgersian and Grant are considerably better broadcasters when the other is not there.
May 2, 2005 at 8:24 pm
Looks like Francis didn’t want to take a walk. He bunted at ball four and swung at ball five.
May 2, 2005 at 8:25 pm
Nice job by Eaton to get out of that inning unscathed.
May 2, 2005 at 8:25 pm
Baseball America’s Daily Dish has this tidbit today …
Look out, but 2004 No. 1 overall pick Matt Bush may be getting into a bit of a groove. Bush hit his second home run of the year in low Class A Fort Wayne’s 5-3 win against Beloit and is hitting .310 in his last eight games with eight runs scored.
May 2, 2005 at 8:26 pm
Somewhat unscathed, he’s now thrown 77 pitches in only four innings.
May 2, 2005 at 8:27 pm
Runs scored and batting average are the stats Baseball America offers when discussing a player in Low-A ball? Geez…
May 2, 2005 at 8:28 pm
His low walk total and ugly BB:K ratio are what bother me about Bush.
May 2, 2005 at 8:31 pm
Speaking of the minors, I wonder if Alderson will instate his rule from when he was with the A’s: “no player was eligible for minor league awards, or was allowed to move up in the system, unless he had at least one walk in every ten at-bats.”
May 2, 2005 at 8:32 pm
I believe he should and I hope that he will.
May 2, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Eaton should consider not giving up doubles to the hitter leading off each inning.
May 2, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Yeah, I look forward to Alderson doing whatever it is he does.
May 2, 2005 at 8:34 pm
I’m OK with what I think is their primary point … he was sucking at the plate … and now he’s hitting the ball … to the tune of a .310 BA with 2 HR’s in the past 8 games … note that they also didn’t mention his error count … which is a worrisome number last time I saw a box score … ack, he 0-for-5′d tonight … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_peoafx_1
May 2, 2005 at 8:35 pm
He pitched to Helton again, damnit. Why?
Also, Garcia absolutely botched the relay. He cost the Padres a run. I’m sick of this guy.
May 2, 2005 at 8:37 pm
I can’t believe Bush has only walked five times in over 80 ABs.
May 2, 2005 at 8:37 pm
Also, just to piss Geoff off, I’m going to point out the K-Rob has 2 more SBs tonight (now with 14 on the season … hitting .299) … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1
Also seems noteworthy to point out that Damian Jackson is hitting .367 … ouch!
May 2, 2005 at 8:38 pm
And your BA snippet only says one HR in the last eight games.
May 2, 2005 at 8:38 pm
Ball four, maybe we can turn a DP.
May 2, 2005 at 8:39 pm
K-Rob is a bum. Four walks in over 90 ABs against AAA pitching?! That’s pathetic.
May 2, 2005 at 8:41 pm
Damian Jackson is playing outstanding, though. .483 OBP and .681 SLG. Almost half of his hits have been for extra bases. He is approaching a 2:1 BB:K ratio. Those are impressive numbers.
May 2, 2005 at 8:42 pm
I’m not sure what “snippet” you’re refering to … when I read it, it says “second home run”???
May 2, 2005 at 8:42 pm
31 y/o players should dominate at AAA, though.
May 2, 2005 at 8:43 pm
Second home run of the season.
May 2, 2005 at 8:43 pm
Gotta run … keep up the conversation, Richard … I like reading the in-game comments even the next day
May 2, 2005 at 8:45 pm
Infield single or E6?
May 2, 2005 at 8:46 pm
Later, LM.
May 2, 2005 at 8:46 pm
Ramon crushed that ball.
May 2, 2005 at 8:49 pm
Big, red Budweiser sign invisible to Padre broadcasters. heh
May 2, 2005 at 8:50 pm
Nice play by Holliday to keep that ball from getting past him.
May 2, 2005 at 8:50 pm
Nady took the cover off that ball and it was looking for Francis. Whoa.
May 2, 2005 at 8:51 pm
Burroughs is getting another look with the bases loaded. He needs to come through because Garcia is a bleeping bum.
May 2, 2005 at 8:52 pm
If that’s a swing, Phil Nevin’s foot came off the bag. Crappy “umpiring” by the idiots manning the corners.
May 2, 2005 at 8:53 pm
Son of a - maybe we should have let Phil try for home.
May 2, 2005 at 8:53 pm
I gotta go. Bye, Rick. Bye, Richard. Bye, Ricky. Later, Dick.
May 3, 2005 at 12:17 am
Anyone know where (if anywhere) I can find pitch-by-pitch information about a game?
May 3, 2005 at 12:30 am
Here you go:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....amp;full=1
May 3, 2005 at 1:55 pm
Thanks, but I had already found what I was looking for at sandiego.padres.mlb.com. It was nice.
