In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Mariners (20 May 2005)

first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (3-0, 2.57 ERA) vs Ryan Franklin (2-4, 4.20 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | SI

Padres, on the heels of a six-game homestand sweep, head to the Pacific Northwest and hope that they can continue their success on the road. The Mariners, despite the off-season signings of high-profile free agents Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson, aren’t doing too well so far.

                            AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current Mariners 52 .212 .268 .288
Franklin vs current Padres 54 .204 .306 .389

For the M’s, Beltre (.250/.318/.400 in 20 AB) has the only homer off Peavy. Another former NL West guy, Sexson, has singled in 10 at-bats, with four strikeouts. Peavy is destroying right-handed hitters in 2005, holding them to .194/.230/.290 in the early going.

On the other side, the first thing that jumps out in Franklin’s line is the 3.28 K/9. Opponents are hitting just .223 against him this year, but that’s a ton of balls in play. He serves up fly balls and allows a fair number of home runs (8 so far this year, 30+ each of the past two seasons). Franklin seems like the type of pitcher against whom the Pads should do well. Ramon Hernandez (.067/.125/.067 in 15 AB) has seen Franklin the most and has done absolutely nothing against him. Robert Fick, Phil Nevin, and Sean Burroughs all have homers. Might be a good time to give Fick a start behind the plate. Presumably Mark Sweeney will serve as DH.

Ten Reasons the Seattle/San Diego Rivalry Is Huge

  1. Both have the I-5 running through town
  2. Both are near the Pacific Ocean
  3. Both are near the border of a very large country
  4. Both start with the letter “S”
  5. Eddie Vedder
  6. Neither has an NHL team
  7. Both are charter cities
  8. Rich Aurilia, Jeff Cirillo, Ben Davis, Wiki Gonzalez, Dave Hansen, Kevin Jarvis, Ramon Vazquez
  9. Old school: Al Martin, Marc Newfield, Scott Sanders, Ron Villone
  10. Three words: Peoria Sports Complex

Cubs/White Sox? Please. Marlins/Devil Rays? I don’t think so. Yankees/Mets. Fuggedaboutit. Mariners/Padres. That, my friends, is a rivalry. Because MLB says so, that’s why.

You da man. TV announcers talking about how old the M’s got last year. They probably shouldn’t use 28-year-old Freddy Garcia as an example.

Beltre isn’t right. Peavy falls behind 3-0 and comes back to strike him out.

Pads have won six straight series. First time they’ve done that since 1996.

Geoff – A question out of nowhere for you: Would you deal Nady for a good starting pitcher, like say, Roger Clemens? Purely hypothetical — I’m not starting or reporting any rumors. Just asking you to put on your GM hat.

  8. Posted May 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm | Permalink

I’d be willing to consider it, yes.

And on that note, I have to duck out to L&L for some Hawaiian barbecue. Be back in about an hour.

    Go Pads!

Interesting to hear, Mark and Geoff. Do your comments indicate that you feel, as I do, that the Padres rotation could still stand a little bolstering? And I’m not talking about the back end of the rotation. Clemens was probably a little too aggressive (wishful?) though.

I think we could use a guy like Kevin Brown was for us in 1998. Jake is on his way to being that guy..but we could use a guy who’s been there before and I don’t consider Woody to be that guy.

I’ve heard on the radio talk of Clemens going to the Yanks … so it would seem he’s “available” … to go to a “team in contention” …

Alternate thought: instead of Nady, how about trading Nevin? I don’t have a feel for his relative “market value” … I suppose any team we’d be trading with would be looking more to the future than a guy like Nevin would fit … ie. any team that’d want Nevin would also prefer the pitcher we’d get for him … part of my idea for trading Nevin is wishful thinking that Tagg Bozied could come up and play 1B for us later this season …

    Hi Lynch,

Good to see you! Nevin won’t go for any trade. I believe he has a no-trade clause (which he exercised in the short-lived deal for Ken Griffey, Jr.). Also, I seem to recall him expressing an interest in staying close to his daughter, who lives in the San Diego area.

Besides Barfield, I’d guess Nady may be one of the most desirable assets the Padres have for a potential trade.

  20. Mark

I really don’t see Nevin being traded. I don’t think that’s the kind of guy you give up if we’re still in the pennant race.

But I agree that the Padres should make a deal for another starting pitcher … deal Barfield? That’d be tempting … but it seems like his value would be a bit down right now …

    Kottaras? That’s a lot of future …

    Uh oh, Peavy walks M’s #9 hitter … that’s not good …

  23. Brian G.

Agree with you completely, Mark. They’d never deal him in the midst of a pennant race even though he’s left about 3,000,002 men on base already this year.

With that, I’m going to throw out some names from teams who are struggling (and are likely to continue to struggle up to and beyond the deadline). Let’s start with Barry Zito. Interested?

Factors in favor of a Zito trade: He’s from San Diego, he’s left-handed, he’s got big game experience, the Padres have made big deals with Oakland before, Oakland is the kind of organization that would be interested in a Nady-like player.

Against: He’s been a .500 pitcher for the past two years. Contract.

    - K. Ginter hit sacrifice fly into double play right to shortstop to second, E. Chavez scored, B. Kielty to third, S. Hatteberg out at second

I’m just trying to picture a scenario that would lead to that play…bases loaded, high fly to deep left. All runners tag because the ball is so high (or perhaps foul?) that it makes no sense to go half-way. It had to be a long throw back to the infield because it was relayed back in by the shortstop.

I’m hoping the description has omitted a few important details.

Eight in a row. I don’t necessarily like seeing our 23 y/o staff ace throwing 111 pitches in a blow-out, though.

That was fun to watch. Nothing too flashy, but worked walks, got hits. Good pitching. It is almost like they are waking up to say “Hey, we are a good team.” and are starting to play like it.

Now, if Arizona would just go away.

On the rivalry, yes it is arbitrary, but cannot think of a better option. Angels/Dodgers is obvious, same with Oakland/SF. Doesn’t leave much. At least we did not end up with Detroit (is that Arizona’s rival?).

And, as arbitrary as it is, how great were those two grand slams in the 9th by Rondell White? And the Pads are leading the series, despite many of those years Seattle had a better record.

    Works for me.

why the Pads don’t show up on ESPN Sports Center more often. Has to do with the fact that Channel 4 isn’t available on satellite. (What you mean by this…I don’t get channel 4 on satellite and wish they had a padres station on there) Anyway I would not trade Barfield or Nady…If anyone is going to be traded I think it will be Giles or Roberts…they are both on the last year of there contract and while the Pads would love to deal Nevin, his no trade clause will not allow that to happen…we could trade Giles to ATL for some prospect pitching and put Nady in Right Field…as far as “trade bait” goes…I see Burroughs as the only one I would trade for young pitching.

Hey SDPf … seems like you might be stuck in “wait ’till next year”-mode … it’s not the time for the Padres to be trading for “young pitching” … we’re talking about trading for an established veteran … somebody who can/will win some games in the #5 (or even higher) slot in our rotation. So the Padres are (need to be :-) thinking about what players will be better in the future that they can trade for a player that will be better this year (and hence get the Padres to the post-season … even the World Series … ah, that sounds so sweet to even hear me type :-) … now is not the time for the Padres to be trading for prospects, but rather trading a prospect for help NOW … aka “the future is NOW” :-)
