In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Mariners (20 May 2005)
Fri, May 20, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 7:05 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (3-0, 2.57 ERA) vs Ryan Franklin (2-4, 4.20 ERA)
previews: ESPN | CBS | SI
Padres, on the heels of a six-game homestand sweep, head to the Pacific Northwest and hope that they can continue their success on the road. The Mariners, despite the off-season signings of high-profile free agents Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson, aren’t doing too well so far.
AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current Mariners 52 .212 .268 .288
Franklin vs current Padres 54 .204 .306 .389
For the M’s, Beltre (.250/.318/.400 in 20 AB) has the only homer off Peavy. Another former NL West guy, Sexson, has singled in 10 at-bats, with four strikeouts. Peavy is destroying right-handed hitters in 2005, holding them to .194/.230/.290 in the early going.
On the other side, the first thing that jumps out in Franklin’s line is the 3.28 K/9. Opponents are hitting just .223 against him this year, but that’s a ton of balls in play. He serves up fly balls and allows a fair number of home runs (8 so far this year, 30+ each of the past two seasons). Franklin seems like the type of pitcher against whom the Pads should do well. Ramon Hernandez (.067/.125/.067 in 15 AB) has seen Franklin the most and has done absolutely nothing against him. Robert Fick, Phil Nevin, and Sean Burroughs all have homers. Might be a good time to give Fick a start behind the plate. Presumably Mark Sweeney will serve as DH.
Ten Reasons the Seattle/San Diego Rivalry Is Huge
- Both have the I-5 running through town
- Both are near the Pacific Ocean
- Both are near the border of a very large country
- Both start with the letter “S”
- Eddie Vedder
- Neither has an NHL team
- Both are charter cities
- Rich Aurilia, Jeff Cirillo, Ben Davis, Wiki Gonzalez, Dave Hansen, Kevin Jarvis, Ramon Vazquez
- Old school: Al Martin, Marc Newfield, Scott Sanders, Ron Villone
- Three words: Peoria Sports Complex
Cubs/White Sox? Please. Marlins/Devil Rays? I don’t think so. Yankees/Mets. Fuggedaboutit. Mariners/Padres. That, my friends, is a rivalry. Because MLB says so, that’s why.

I’m first?
PS - Eddie Vedder is a San Diegan all the way.
May 20, 2005 at 7:15 pm
You da man. TV announcers talking about how old the M’s got last year. They probably shouldn’t use 28-year-old Freddy Garcia as an example.
May 20, 2005 at 7:19 pm
For a 1-2-3 inning, the Pads made Franklin work. He threw 21 pitches.
May 20, 2005 at 7:24 pm
Jake is looking good…nice start
May 20, 2005 at 7:24 pm
Beltre isn’t right. Peavy falls behind 3-0 and comes back to strike him out.
Pads have won six straight series. First time they’ve done that since 1996.
May 20, 2005 at 7:32 pm
Home run Ramon. Ichiro climbs the wall and has his glove a good 3-4 feet above the top. Not close.
May 20, 2005 at 7:40 pm
Geoff - A question out of nowhere for you: Would you deal Nady for a good starting pitcher, like say, Roger Clemens? Purely hypothetical — I’m not starting or reporting any rumors. Just asking you to put on your GM hat.
May 20, 2005 at 7:43 pm
I’d be willing to consider it, yes.
And on that note, I have to duck out to L&L for some Hawaiian barbecue. Be back in about an hour.
Go Pads!
May 20, 2005 at 7:51 pm
I would definitely consider trading Nady as well for a top starting pitcher.
May 20, 2005 at 7:59 pm
Interesting to hear, Mark and Geoff. Do your comments indicate that you feel, as I do, that the Padres rotation could still stand a little bolstering? And I’m not talking about the back end of the rotation. Clemens was probably a little too aggressive (wishful?) though.
May 20, 2005 at 8:01 pm
I think we could use a guy like Kevin Brown was for us in 1998. Jake is on his way to being that guy..but we could use a guy who’s been there before and I don’t consider Woody to be that guy.
May 20, 2005 at 8:15 pm
I’ve heard on the radio talk of Clemens going to the Yanks … so it would seem he’s “available” … to go to a “team in contention” …
Alternate thought: instead of Nady, how about trading Nevin? I don’t have a feel for his relative “market value” … I suppose any team we’d be trading with would be looking more to the future than a guy like Nevin would fit … ie. any team that’d want Nevin would also prefer the pitcher we’d get for him … part of my idea for trading Nevin is wishful thinking that Tagg Bozied could come up and play 1B for us later this season …
May 20, 2005 at 8:16 pm
A little top o’ 5th rally going …
- S. Burroughs walked
- K. Greene hit by pitch, S. Burroughs to second
- G. Blum singled to center, S. Burroughs scored, K. Greene to third
May 20, 2005 at 8:16 pm
Pitching numbers so far (I think thru 4 full) …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 59-42; R Franklin 57-41.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 4-2; R Franklin 1-8.
Batters faced - J Peavy 12; R Franklin 14.
May 20, 2005 at 8:18 pm
Angels just now score 4 on Dogs … up 4-0 in top of 2nd …
D-backs win today … 6-2 over Tigers … Webb now 6-0 … who saw that comin’? I sure didn’t.
May 20, 2005 at 8:22 pm
Peavy now with a 3-0 cushion … top of 5th finished thus …
- R. Hernandez flied out to left center
- S. Burroughs walked
- K. Greene hit by pitch, S. Burroughs to second
- G. Blum singled to center, S. Burroughs scored, K. Greene to third
- D. Roberts hit sacrifice fly to deep right center, K. Greene scored
- M. Sweeney walked, G. Blum to second
- R. Klesko flied out to center
PS. Hensley throwing no-no thru 5 for Portland Beavers … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1
May 20, 2005 at 8:25 pm
Ft Wayne loses team no-no in 9th … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_ftwafx_1 …
It’s a night for no-no’s
May 20, 2005 at 8:33 pm
Make that “near no-no”s … pitching stats thru 5 …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 80-55; R Franklin 75-50.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 4-2; R Franklin 1-11.
Batters faced - J Peavy 17; R Franklin 21.
Peavy now with 9K’s, 0 BBs, 2 Hs … SMOKIN’!
May 20, 2005 at 8:35 pm
Hi Lynch,
Good to see you! Nevin won’t go for any trade. I believe he has a no-trade clause (which he exercised in the short-lived deal for Ken Griffey, Jr.). Also, I seem to recall him expressing an interest in staying close to his daughter, who lives in the San Diego area.
Besides Barfield, I’d guess Nady may be one of the most desirable assets the Padres have for a potential trade.
May 20, 2005 at 8:39 pm
I really don’t see Nevin being traded. I don’t think that’s the kind of guy you give up if we’re still in the pennant race.
May 20, 2005 at 8:42 pm
Padres quite in top of 6th …
- B. Giles walked
- P. Nevin grounded out to shortstop, B. Giles to second
- R. Hernandez struck out swinging
- S. Burroughs grounded out to shortstop
May 20, 2005 at 8:47 pm
But I agree that the Padres should make a deal for another starting pitcher … deal Barfield? That’d be tempting … but it seems like his value would be a bit down right now …
Kottaras? That’s a lot of future …
Uh oh, Peavy walks M’s #9 hitter … that’s not good …
May 20, 2005 at 8:49 pm
Agree with you completely, Mark. They’d never deal him in the midst of a pennant race even though he’s left about 3,000,002 men on base already this year.
With that, I’m going to throw out some names from teams who are struggling (and are likely to continue to struggle up to and beyond the deadline). Let’s start with Barry Zito. Interested?
May 20, 2005 at 8:51 pm
Yeah…I’d definitely consider making a move for Zito. I’m not sure I’d give them Nady for him though..
May 20, 2005 at 8:53 pm
Pitchers thru 6 …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 96-63; R Franklin 93-59.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 5-4; R Franklin 3-11.
Batters faced - J Peavy 21; R Franklin 25.
May 20, 2005 at 8:55 pm
Factors in favor of a Zito trade: He’s from San Diego, he’s left-handed, he’s got big game experience, the Padres have made big deals with Oakland before, Oakland is the kind of organization that would be interested in a Nady-like player.
Against: He’s been a .500 pitcher for the past two years. Contract.
May 20, 2005 at 8:56 pm

May 20, 2005 at 8:58 pm
I’d rather have Nady than Zito. I’d also rather see Nady playing every day.
May 20, 2005 at 8:59 pm
Sorry for the double post.
While we’re talking about lefties, how about Andy Pettite?
May 20, 2005 at 9:02 pm
He’s on the hook for $8.5M this year. I wouldn’t give Nady for Pettitte, but he’s not a bad idea.
May 20, 2005 at 9:03 pm
I’d take Zito for Nady in a heart-beat … and I’m a HUGE Nady fan … and I agree that Zito’s just a .500 pitcher … but that’s all we’re looking for!
I don’t think the A’s take Nady for Zito …
May 20, 2005 at 9:03 pm
If you’re playing the infield in, you pretty much have to make the play. We’ll take it.
May 20, 2005 at 9:05 pm
Kevin Millwood (Cleveland)…?
May 20, 2005 at 9:06 pm
And let me clarify what I mean by a “huge Nady fan” … I don’t think he’s a future All-Star … I’m just rooting for him because I’ve been following his minor league career since we drafted him … so I HOPE he becomes a full-time regular player … it’d be GREAT if he made an All-Star team or 2 … I just don’t think it’s gonna happen … because I also hope’d that’d happen for Ben Davis and Dave Staton and Ray McDavid and Shawn Abner and … Jake Gautreau and Tagg Bozied and … well, you get the idea …
May 20, 2005 at 9:06 pm
Hey there’s a Putz up in the bullpen.
May 20, 2005 at 9:06 pm
Isn’t Millwood on a 1-yr deal? I don’t know that I’d deal Nady to get any pitcher that’s on a 1-yr deal.
May 20, 2005 at 9:07 pm
Big fly time! Put the hammer down!
May 20, 2005 at 9:09 pm
Or just squirt one down the 3B line.
May 20, 2005 at 9:10 pm
Yes. One year, $7MM, I think.
GY, are you thinking Nady is your RF next year? 3B? In other words, where are you going to play him if you keep him?
May 20, 2005 at 9:10 pm
OT … scoring question … check out this from the A’s vs Giants game tonight …
- K. Ginter hit sacrifice fly into double play right to shortstop to second, E. Chavez scored, B. Kielty to third, S. Hatteberg out at second
… so,since Ginter hit into a double play, no RBI? The box score makes it look like they gave him an RBI … but I thought no RBI on DP … would that be only GIDP? Suppose so …
May 20, 2005 at 9:11 pm
mini-big-fly will do
6-0 Padres!
How long let Peavy go? I say he’s done soon … if not now …
May 20, 2005 at 9:12 pm
Giles and Burroughs are both up at the end of the year. I think there’s a decent chance that Nady could end up replacing one of them in 2006.
May 20, 2005 at 9:13 pm
Interesting about the DP. It would seem so.
Wow, Peavy looks good.
May 20, 2005 at 9:15 pm
Hensley ended up giving up 2 H’s in 7 IP for Portland … Kerry Robinson & Ben Johnson with HRs … hey, ANY chance Robinson would fetch us a bullpen arm in a trade? Just an idea
May 20, 2005 at 9:15 pm
I would agree that there’s a good chance that Nady is probably replacing Giles next season. He has said that he hopes that he can play on the same team as his brother.
May 20, 2005 at 9:15 pm
Nice play by Blum coming in on that grounder to get Ibanez. I like him better at second than short.
May 20, 2005 at 9:15 pm
Robinson for a reliever? I think Oropesa is available.
May 20, 2005 at 9:16 pm
Hey…a ducksnort sighting at the game tonight..
May 20, 2005 at 9:17 pm
Kottaras with a 9th inning HR to tie up that ballgame … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_lncafx_1
May 20, 2005 at 9:17 pm
I’m just trying to picture a scenario that would lead to that play…bases loaded, high fly to deep left. All runners tag because the ball is so high (or perhaps foul?) that it makes no sense to go half-way. It had to be a long throw back to the infield because it was relayed back in by the shortstop.
I’m hoping the description has omitted a few important details.
By the way, the Dodgers are losing 4-0 in the 6th to the Santa Fe Springs/City of Orange Angels.
May 20, 2005 at 9:19 pm
Aw, Geoff, can’t a guy dream?
Pitching stats thru 7 …
Pitches-strikes - J Peavy 111-72; R Franklin 108-65; M Thornton 17-11.
Ground balls-fly balls - J Peavy 6-5; R Franklin 3-11; M Thornton 1-0.
Batters faced - J Peavy 25; R Franklin 28; M Thornton 4.
Peavy’s gotta be done now, right?
May 20, 2005 at 9:21 pm
I’m just catching up on the posts. Zito was also tutored by Randy Jones, that’s another connection.
May 20, 2005 at 9:22 pm
I just looked at the line score — 6 runs on FOUR hits?
May 20, 2005 at 9:22 pm
Why isn’t Nady in this game?
May 20, 2005 at 9:23 pm
I think if my last name was “Putz” I would have my name changed. I don’t care how he wants it prounounced.
May 20, 2005 at 9:24 pm
Franklin had 5 walks in 6.1 IP … that, plus 3 hits (2 XBH) yielded 5 runs … all earned!
May 20, 2005 at 9:27 pm
nice pitch
May 20, 2005 at 9:27 pm
Reyes in. Home run Olivo.

Ouch!
May 20, 2005 at 9:30 pm
Holy smokes, Suzuki is fast!
May 20, 2005 at 9:30 pm
man is Ichiro fast…holy cow
May 20, 2005 at 9:30 pm
ROTFLOL! Thanks, Geoff!
May 20, 2005 at 9:31 pm
I think there was smoke coming off his shoes as he went down the 1st baseline
May 20, 2005 at 9:31 pm
One good thing about being a baseball fan in the NW is getting to see Ichiro! on TV … he is THE REAL DEAL!
May 20, 2005 at 9:32 pm
Mr. Negative-
I’ll bet you the tab from our next meal together that Reyes allows no more than three runs. ;>)
A’s score 5 in the 7th to lead the Giants 8-3.
May 20, 2005 at 9:32 pm
They just showed another guy in the crowd wearing an old school Tony Gwynn uni.
Also, Matt V. is explaining why the Pads don’t show up on ESPN Sports Center more often. Has to do with the fact that Channel 4 isn’t available on satellite.
May 20, 2005 at 9:34 pm
What a great play by Sean B.
May 20, 2005 at 9:34 pm
Heckuva play by Burroughs to end the inning. Hang a star.
May 20, 2005 at 9:35 pm
That play by Burroughs is why I would like to see him remain the third baseman for years.
May 20, 2005 at 9:36 pm
Reyes does his job …
May 20, 2005 at 9:38 pm
I think we’ll be seeing Burroughs playing 3B for quite awhile. If Nady is still here…I bet he is in RF.
May 20, 2005 at 9:40 pm
Again, why no AB for Nady?
May 20, 2005 at 9:41 pm
Kevin,
If Burroughs continues to have an OPS in the mid-.600s (with 8 RBI through 42 games), he’s not going to be your 3B too much longer after this season.
I’m wondering if they’ll move Loretta there to open up 2B for Barfield next year (or 2007).
May 20, 2005 at 9:43 pm
Time again for a BIG FLY!
May 20, 2005 at 9:46 pm
Burroughs isn’t exactly killing the ball, but he’s 24 and playing a Gold Glove third base. And he’s usually hitting eighth. I’ll take him.
May 20, 2005 at 9:47 pm
Another question for the panel: I’m no Bruce Bochy fan but how much longer can you afford (literally) to make the guy wait for a contract extention?
May 20, 2005 at 9:49 pm
The extension is coming in the next two weeks, according to the Tribune today.
May 20, 2005 at 9:53 pm
1 HR every 123 career ABs just isn’t going to cut it from your 3B.
May 20, 2005 at 9:54 pm
Unless he’s Wade Boggs or John McGraw.
May 20, 2005 at 9:55 pm
8 in a row….very nice win for the boys…
May 20, 2005 at 9:55 pm
Eight in a row, 17 out of 20. Peavy rocks.
May 20, 2005 at 9:56 pm
Some final pitching stats …
Pitcher IP PC H ER BB K
Peavy 7.0 111 3 0 1 10
Reyes 1.0 18 2 1 0 0
Otsuka 1.0 20 0 0 1 1
Ho, hum … another W
May 20, 2005 at 9:56 pm
our 3B, Brian.
May 20, 2005 at 10:01 pm
Sorry. I was using the generic ‘your’.
I’m just not sure that a powerless 3B is a luxury we can afford, especially with the Padres’ top infield prospect supposedly getting ready to make the jump to the major leagues.
And thank you for the update on the Bochy situation.
May 20, 2005 at 10:04 pm
Brian, here is that link:

Loretta update:
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/.....9705204233
Surgery remains a possibility.
May 20, 2005 at 10:51 pm
Eight in a row. I don’t necessarily like seeing our 23 y/o staff ace throwing 111 pitches in a blow-out, though.
May 20, 2005 at 11:11 pm
That was fun to watch. Nothing too flashy, but worked walks, got hits. Good pitching. It is almost like they are waking up to say “Hey, we are a good team.” and are starting to play like it.
Now, if Arizona would just go away.
May 20, 2005 at 11:16 pm
On the rivalry, yes it is arbitrary, but cannot think of a better option. Angels/Dodgers is obvious, same with Oakland/SF. Doesn’t leave much. At least we did not end up with Detroit (is that Arizona’s rival?).
And, as arbitrary as it is, how great were those two grand slams in the 9th by Rondell White? And the Pads are leading the series, despite many of those years Seattle had a better record.
Works for me.
May 21, 2005 at 1:56 am
why the Pads don’t show up on ESPN Sports Center more often. Has to do with the fact that Channel 4 isn’t available on satellite. (What you mean by this…I don’t get channel 4 on satellite and wish they had a padres station on there) Anyway I would not trade Barfield or Nady…If anyone is going to be traded I think it will be Giles or Roberts…they are both on the last year of there contract and while the Pads would love to deal Nevin, his no trade clause will not allow that to happen…we could trade Giles to ATL for some prospect pitching and put Nady in Right Field…as far as “trade bait” goes…I see Burroughs as the only one I would trade for young pitching.
May 21, 2005 at 1:52 pm
Hey SDPf … seems like you might be stuck in “wait ’till next year”-mode … it’s not the time for the Padres to be trading for “young pitching” … we’re talking about trading for an established veteran … somebody who can/will win some games in the #5 (or even higher) slot in our rotation. So the Padres are (need to be
thinking about what players will be better in the future that they can trade for a player that will be better this year (and hence get the Padres to the post-season … even the World Series … ah, that sounds so sweet to even hear me type
… now is not the time for the Padres to be trading for prospects, but rather trading a prospect for help NOW … aka “the future is NOW”
