In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Cardinals (5 May 2005)
Thu, May 5, 2005by Geoff Young
first pitch: 5:10 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence (2-3, 5.46 ERA) vs Matt Morris (2-0, 2.12 ERA)
game preview: Padres.com
AB BA OBP SLG
Lawrence vs current Cardinals 102 .353 .450 .627
Morris vs current Padres 154 .266 .323 .409
Mark Grudzielanek (.158/.158/.158 in 19 AB) and Albert Pujols (.231/.375/.308 in 13 AB) haven’t done much against Lawrence. There are some gawdy numbers among the rest. Geez, I can’t even type that high.
Brian Giles (.381/.458/.619 in 21 AB) and Ryan Klesko (.364/.417/.591 in 22 AB) have had success against Morris. The rest of the lineup, not so much.
We’ll be out “celebrating” my birthday, so I won’t be able to hang with y’all for this one. Ken Griffey Jr. is the first guy I remember playing in the big leagues who was younger than me. How ’bout the rest of you?

The numbers against B-Law are unsettling.
I don’t think anyone in the majors was born after July 20, 1985.
May 5, 2005 at 9:17 am
I think mine was Sean Burroughs
May 5, 2005 at 9:48 am
Robin Yount (http://www.baseball-reference.com/y/yountro01.shtml) is only ~3 years older than me … when he came up (at age 18), it hit home to me that I was growin’ up!
Now, I note that Julio Franco (http://www.baseball-reference.com/f/francju01.shtml) is actually 2 month older2 than I am … and that seems more important to me right now … that someone older than I am hit a HR in the big leagues last year … I’m still hoping & rooting for that to be true this year … http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/3001

Happy Birthday Geoff!
My player is Zach Greinke, who shares my birthday but was born 2 years after me.
May 5, 2005 at 12:21 pm
Happy Birthday, Geoff.
May 5, 2005 at 1:29 pm
GY-
Roll out the bad poetry, we have a new curse on our hands — the CURSE OF ANNA KOURNIKOVA! Apparently, Brian Giles hasn’t had a hit since he caught the first pitch from her. See this morning’s U-T for details.
And Happy Birthday!
May 5, 2005 at 2:02 pm
Thanks to all for the b’day wishes. And speaking of wishes, be careful Brian - it just might happen.
May 5, 2005 at 2:04 pm
Happy Birthday! I don’t remember anybody in particular, but I do know that Jeff Francis the other day made me feel really old.
May 5, 2005 at 4:04 pm
Nice article on Trevor and his impending 400th save:

Crap. 1-2-3 inning… 0.49, 0.26, 0.10, 0.00 heh
May 5, 2005 at 5:20 pm
Walked the first batter, 2-0 to the next. Crap.
May 5, 2005 at 5:21 pm
Got Walker to pop up. That’s somewhat of a relief. It’d be nice if he could coax a groundball, now.
May 5, 2005 at 5:22 pm
Happy birthday Geoff. And it was Chipper Jones for me.
May 5, 2005 at 5:23 pm
Three up and three down for B-Law.
May 5, 2005 at 5:26 pm
That was a good AB by Nevin.
May 5, 2005 at 5:27 pm
The curse of Kournikova ends mercifully.
May 5, 2005 at 5:28 pm
Men on first & second with no outs… what could possibly go wrong?
May 5, 2005 at 5:29 pm
I guess that could go wrong. Triple play.
May 5, 2005 at 5:30 pm
Three well-hit balls, three up & three down. What crap.
May 5, 2005 at 5:32 pm
Anybody think B-Law will have even one inning where the lead-off guy doesn’t get on base?
May 5, 2005 at 5:32 pm
On Channel 4, they’re discussing what to call a triple play if a double play is a rally killer. I vote “cold slap in the groin.”
May 5, 2005 at 5:33 pm
Nice play by Sean. What the hell was Nevin doing, though?
May 5, 2005 at 5:34 pm
Jeff, you were just here. Where’d you go?
May 5, 2005 at 5:35 pm
I say, “plunk Rolen next time he comes up.”
May 5, 2005 at 5:36 pm
Sanders ripped that ball down the line. There have been too many hard-hit baseballs against B-Law already.
May 5, 2005 at 5:37 pm
Matty V called that perfectly, “Could have thrown him out twice.”
May 5, 2005 at 5:41 pm
Photo Not Available grounds out to second.
May 5, 2005 at 5:42 pm
I’m still lurking. Watching my Braves beat Houston.
May 5, 2005 at 5:44 pm
Jackson just got himself thrown out going back to first base.
May 5, 2005 at 5:44 pm
That’s damn pathetic. Braves, huh?
May 5, 2005 at 5:47 pm
The strike zone descends to the shins today.
May 5, 2005 at 5:51 pm
Dave Magadan pinch-hit in the last Padre win in St. Louis.
May 5, 2005 at 5:52 pm
Yep, I’m a southerner living in San Diego. Been a Braves fan since the Biff Pocoroba days. Actually, since birth, but Biff was my first favorite Brave.
May 5, 2005 at 5:54 pm
That’s a lousy excuse. Cool, though.
May 5, 2005 at 5:56 pm
Nice play by Loretta.
May 5, 2005 at 6:03 pm
Could be that the AnnaK-curse only applies @ PetCo?
May 5, 2005 at 6:05 pm
Cause it sure don’t apply @ Busch!!!
B. Giles homered to deep right, R. Klesko and P. Nevin scored
May 5, 2005 at 6:06 pm
Cause it sure don’t apply @ Busch!!!

May 5, 2005 at 6:07 pm
Burp … excuse me!
May 5, 2005 at 6:09 pm
From the Yahoo game notes …
SAN DIEGO’S RAMON HERNANDEZ LINED INTO A TRIPLE PLAY IN THE TOP OF THE SECOND INNING. HERNANDEZ LINED OUT TO FIRST BASEMAN ALBERT PUJOLS FOR THE FIRST OUT. PUJOLS STEPPED ON FIRST BASE TO DOUBLE OFF BRIAN GILES. PUJOLS THREW TO SHORTSTOP DAVID ECKSTEIN, WHO STEPPED ON SECOND TO GET PHIL NEVIN.
… for those of us that have played Strat-O-Matic, that’s a real-world “line out(max)”
May 5, 2005 at 6:16 pm
Matt Bush is 2-for-3 so far tonight … but his first CS …
May 5, 2005 at 6:18 pm
Matt Bush is STILL sitting on 5 walks.
May 5, 2005 at 6:23 pm
Why not send B-Law on Loretta’s fly out?
May 5, 2005 at 6:24 pm
You can’t come away with nothing after having men on 2nd & 3rd and only one away.
May 5, 2005 at 6:24 pm
Hey, I just noticed that Klesko and Giles are swapped in the line-up!
May 5, 2005 at 6:24 pm
Lynch, Jim Edmonds is playing centerfield.
May 5, 2005 at 6:25 pm
They sure are. I’m quite pleased.
May 5, 2005 at 6:30 pm
Good inning by B-Law there.
May 5, 2005 at 7:28 pm
How the hell do you get two guys picked off of first base by the catcher in the same damned game? That’s pathetic.
May 5, 2005 at 7:34 pm
Where are you guys getting your Matt Bush updates?
Have a good one, Geoff. Hope you’re at Donovan’s or Morton’s, enjoying a bloody rare prime filet and a bottle of Opus One.
May 5, 2005 at 7:39 pm
Just tuned in, how does Giles look tonight? His numbers sure say he is having a solid game.
May 5, 2005 at 7:40 pm
Lance,
http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....p?cid=t584
May 5, 2005 at 7:42 pm
Giles looked as good at the plate tonight as he has at any time this season.
May 5, 2005 at 7:43 pm
Looks like tonight may not be a save situation.
May 5, 2005 at 7:47 pm
Giles is back over the Mendoza line and has 5 RBIs tonight.
May 5, 2005 at 7:48 pm
Now, if the bullpen can just hold a five run lead for one inning…
May 5, 2005 at 7:48 pm
I am hoping that this game tonight gives them a big boost confidence-wise since they haven’t won (knock on wood) in St. Louis in a long time.
May 5, 2005 at 7:50 pm
I was hoping Bochy would let Hammond finish things off. His change/curve/ephus was nasty tonight.
May 5, 2005 at 7:52 pm
Bruce, no need to send out one of our best relievers to close out a 5-run lead. We may need Hammond again this weekend and we’ll want him to be fresh.
May 5, 2005 at 7:53 pm
Reyes recorded all three outs on grounders to third.
May 5, 2005 at 7:54 pm
I know the prudent thing was done, I just wanted to see him pitch some more
May 5, 2005 at 7:55 pm
Burroughs had the last 6 put-outs. It is almost like karma asked him to make the last six outs after getting picked off.
May 5, 2005 at 7:55 pm
That was a nice Blazing Saddles reference there at the end by Matt. Of course, it’s a “number 6,” not a “number 7″ as Mud said.
May 5, 2005 at 7:56 pm
Richard’s right. Nasty isn’t necessary to finish a five-run ballgame. Gimme the ball. I could close out this thing.
Of course it might not be a five-run game by the time they pulled me.
May 5, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Bruce, fair enough. Hammond is a fun guy to watch pitch.
May 5, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Isn’t Blazing Saddles a bit before your time, Richard?
Still, I commend you on your comedic taste.
May 5, 2005 at 7:57 pm
Taggart: I got it! I got it!
Lamarr: You do?
Taggart: We’ll work up a “Number 6″ on ‘em.
Lamarr: “Number 6″? I’m afraid I’m not familiar with that one..
Taggart: Well, that’s where we go a-ridin’ into town, a whampin’ and whompin’ every livin’ thing that moves within an inch of its life. Except the women folks, of course.
Lamarr: You spare the women?
Taggart: NAW! We rape the shit out of them at the Number 6 Dance later on!
Lamarr: Marvelous!
May 5, 2005 at 7:58 pm
It’s well before my time, yes.
May 5, 2005 at 8:07 pm
I get to minorleaguebaseball.com via baseballamerica.com’s “scoreboard” link … easier to navigate to the box scores I want …
May 5, 2005 at 8:26 pm
Stauffer’s @ 6 IP, 2 H, 7 K’s, 0 BB, 0 ER so far tonight … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1
May 5, 2005 at 8:29 pm
I don’t get Jon Knott hitting .218 for the Beavers … how’d that guy forget how to hit? He hit .290 w/ .533 SLG last year @ Portland …
May 5, 2005 at 9:02 pm
Jon Knott
BB:AB, 19:85 (1:10 is good)
K:AB, 23:85 (1:5 is good)
BB:K, 19:23 (1:2 is good)
XBH:H, 11:19 (3:10 is good)
Aside from the K:AB ratio, those are good numbers.
May 5, 2005 at 9:13 pm
Josh Barfield with 3-run walk-off HR for the Beavers tonight (his 4th HR of the season) … Tim Stauffer threw ~98 pitches thru the first 9-innings, 6 H, 1 BB, 8 Ks, 0 Rs, his ERA now down to 2.33 … I listened to the 9th & 10th on the internet radio broadcast (linked off http://www.pgepark.com/beavers/) … fun finish!
