In-Game Discussion: Padres @ Diamondbacks

first pitch: 1:40 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Brian Lawrence (1-2, 5.60 ERA) vs Shawn Estes (1-1, 4.00 ERA)
game previews: ESPN | CBS SportsLine | SI

Padres try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Snakes this afternoon. Saturday night’s loss was frustrating but not entirely surprising given the Pads’ lack of success against Brandon Webb in the past and poor clutch hitting this year, and the fact that once again their best hitter (Xavier Nady) was not in the lineup. Talk of bringing up Damian Jackson or Kerry Robinson to replace the hitless Adam Hyzdu is great, but none of those guys is a difference maker. Nady might be. It’d be a shame to see him waste another year in deference to guys with bigger contracts who aren’t necessarily better options.

                              AB BA OBP SLG
Lawrence vs current D’backs 183 .235 .286 .355
Estes vs current Padres 201 .274 .368 .378
Padres vs LHP 151 .252 .370 .444
Giants vs RHP 420 .257 .321 .390

The one guy who owns Lawrence is Jose Cruz, Jr. (.538/.600/.923), currently on the DL. Shawn Green (.224/.296/.367) has two homers against Lawrence in 49 at-bats, while Luis Gonzalez (.200/.243/.314) hasn’t left the yard in 35 at-bats. For the Pads, Ryan Klesko (.368/.455/.632) has done the most damage against Estes. Geoff Blum (.444/.545/.889) and Xavier Nady (.500/.500/.875) also have had success, in much smaller samples. Estes has pretty well neutralized several of the Friars’ best hitters: Phil Nevin (.200/.351/.267), Brian Giles (.160/.222/.320), Mark Loretta (.211/.348/.263), Ramon Hernandez (.063/.167/.063). Day game after a night game? Looks like a good time to start Miguel Ojeda.

Just got home from lunch: 2-0 Arizona in third, threatening to score more. Padres have no hits. Ugh.

  2. Geoff Young Says:

Tony Clark, three-run jack: 6-0. Lawrence has nothing.

  3. Geoff Young Says:

Wow. Roberts almost took Estes out to right-center. Leadoff triple. That ball was crushed.

  4. Geoff Young Says:

    Home run… Jesse Garcia?!

  5. Geoff Young Says:

Tying run comes to the plate with two out in the eighth: Miguel Ojeda. What a bizarre inning.

  6. Geoff Young Says:

Brandon Lyon in. Brian Giles bats for Ojeda, hits a routine grounder to short, but the shortstop is playing behind second base. First and second.

  7. Geoff Young Says:

Ground ball to first by Jesse Garcia, inning over. Padres down 8-6. Nice to see them doing some damage against the Arizona bullpen. Not as nice as it would have been not to fall behind 8-1, but whatever.

  8. Geoff Young Says:

Seanez gets the first out. Burroughs, Roberts, and Loretta are due up in the ninth.

  9. Geoff Young Says:

Correction: Sweeney leads off the ninth. Grounder to first, I thought he beat the throw. What a shame if that call costs us the game.

  10. Geoff Young Says:

Roberts singles, Loretta up. He’s bunting?

  11. Geoff Young Says:

Roberts steals second. Good throw by catcher, Roberts just beat it.

  12. Geoff Young Says:

Brandon Lyon gets Nady this time. Game over, Padres swept in the desert.

  13. Lance Says:

I sure as hell hope this team gets better as the year goes on.

  14. LynchMob Says:

Don’t be surprised by Garcia’s bat … I saw him twice in Peoria and he put good wood on the ball in most ABs … I was impressed … and glad he got the callup from AAA …

  15. LynchMob Says:

    W for Stauffer @ AAA today … ERA now 2.16 … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_slcaaa_1 … save to Brad Baker …

Elsewhere … McAnulty back in the Mobile lineup after getting hurt making a diving catch … Fernando Jr hit his 3rd HR (now hitting .389) … snow postponed the game @ Ft. Wayne :-)

  16. Eric Says:

Things will definitely get better, but I’m worried we’ve lost too much ground already. There’s not that much upside, here…everything had to go right from the get-go.

  17. LynchMob Says:

Eric - I’m still a believer that “it’s early” … but I’ve always felt we’d need some help (ie. make some kind of trade) … and I agree that the poor start makes that need greater …

The easy trade to make would be for a pitcher or 2 … the hard trade to make is for a hitter or 2 … what makes it hard is the decision of who from the current lineup to bump … seems like Klesko is the guy to bump first … but I can see the case for Burroughs, but I really hate to give up on the guy … I think it’s realistic to expect Giles and Nevin to pull their weight … but I’m getting pretty pessimistic about Giles, to tell you the truth …

by Geoff Young

first pitch: 6:40 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Jake Peavy (2-0, 1.31 ERA) vs Brandon Webb (3-0, 3.26 ERA)
game previews: CBS SportsLine | SI

                           AB BA OBP SLG
Peavy vs current D’backs 102 .275 .336 .500
Webb vs current Padres 98 .173 .214 .214

Luis Gonzalez owns Peavy: .529/.600/1.176 in 17 at-bats, with three jacks. Alex Cintron, Craig Counsell, and Shawn Green also have homers. For the Padres, only Brian Giles (.385/.429/.538 in 13 at-bats) has had any amount of success against Webb.

I’ve got band rehearsal tonight, but I’ll drop by later to see what y’all had to say. Go Pads!

  1. LynchMob Says:

I caught a few minutes of the Mighty 1090 broadcast (I live in Corvallis, OR) last night … after Giles was K’d by Koplove (and had been K’d by Halsey in previous AB), Leitner said “his swing looks slow, I gotta tell it like it is” … a comment surely influence by the numbers (batting average currently around the Mendoza Line) … sure seemed like he was swinging good during spring training … ug.

  2. LynchMob Says:

Matt Bush made his 6th error of the season today … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....x_ftwafx_1 .. ug … I’m looking for bright spots … the negatives seem predominent right now …

  3. LynchMob Says:

It’s the bottom of the 9th … game tied 1-1 … but Otsuka’s in some trouble with 2 runners on … ack, never mind, Cintron just eneded it … Padres lose 2-1 …

What spurred me to comment was noticing that Nady didn’t get an AB in this game … and that’s just not right … either Giles or Klesko or Burroughs has to sit so that Nady plays!

Fri, Apr 22, 2005Ballhype: hype it up!
by Geoff Young

first pitch: 6:40 p.m., PT
television: Channel 4
matchup: Tim Redding vs Brad Halsey

Redding makes his third start as a Padre, Halsey makes his 10th as a big leaguer. Jesse Garcia (.215/.234/.289 for his career) gets the start at short, so the rest of the lineup needs to pick up the slack.

                             AB BA OBP SLG
Redding vs current D’backs 79 .316 .372 .481
Halsey vs league (career) 195 .303 .356 .456

Craig Counsell and Luis Gonzalez are doing most of the damage; the latter has the only homer off Redding. Only Geoff Blum (0 for 2) has at-bats against Halsey so I posted career numbers instead.

  1. Geoff Young Says:

Halsey looks good. Caught Nevin looking on three pitches to end the first.

  2. Geoff Young Says:

Is it me, or does Redding not have an out pitch? He’s doing a nice job getting ahead of guys but he can’t seem to put them away.

  3. Geoff Young Says:

Home run Glaus. 3-0 with one out in the first.

    Paging Mr. Stauffer…

  4. Richard Says:

    3-0. Wonderful.

  5. Lance Says:

His fastball would be a good out pitch, if he could locate it.

  6. Geoff Young Says:

How do you get ahead of Clayton and then serve up a home run to that guy?

  7. Lance Says:

I still think Redding should be an excellent #5. Watching him, he usually looks like a good 2 or 3. Yes, I know this could be said of MANY underachieving starters, but I yearn for Tim’s breakout much as I did for Calvin Schiraldi’s (SP?).

  8. Lance Says:

Richard, I SWEAR to start the Blogger account soon.I don’t want to sully up your blog, so I’ll try to let you know what I’m doing before posting.

  9. Geoff Young Says:

Redding has an ugly swing. It almost got him a hit an RBI.

  10. Lance Says:

Redding has ugly results as a pitcher. Screw it, I no longer care that he LOOKS like a good pitcher. He doesn’t get anyone out.

  11. Richard Says:

I believe you, Lance. Also, methinks Redding isn’t all that great.

  12. Lance Says:

True, Redding isn’t all that great, but unless Stauffer proves ready, I’ll take Redding over May in a heartbeat.
I’d rather still that Stauffer was being readied in the long spot in the bullpen. As Earl Weaver said, the best place for a rookie pitcher is long relief.

  13. Geoff Young Says:

Okay, that was a terrific play by Garcia to bail out Loretta and finish the double play.

  14. Geoff Young Says:

I agree, it’s too early for Stauffer. I was being (mostly) facetious with that comment. I’d like to see Stauffer make at least 12-15 starts at Portland before they even *consider* bringing him up. I also like Redding over May.

  15. Geoff Young Says:

Nevin homers to left. That’s #150 as a Padre. Scary thing is, he didn’t get all of it.

  16. LynchMob Says:

Whassup with the plunkings (Nady & Counsel) … was the 2nd retaliation for the first?

  17. Lance Says:

The scary thing about it is that he never shows that kind of power to left-center at Petco.
Actually, that would have gone out in right-center at Petco, too.

  18. Lance Says:

Sometimes baseballs hit batters, Lynchmob. It’s an occupational hazard.

  19. LynchMob Says:

And sometimes baseball players are idiots … I understand the concept of “retaliation”, but it’s one of my least favorite aspects of baseball … eh, I don’t mean to sound like I’m on a high-horse … just venting …

  20. Lance Says:

I’m afraid I’m gonna have to bail out to go see my pals Buddy Blue and Jerry Raney (Geoff may know these original Beat Farmers) play acoustic.
    Let’s go Pads!!!

  21. LynchMob Says:

Any chance Bochy thinks about PH’ing for Redding this early?

  22. Lance Says:

Chill, LynchMob, lest I regale you with chin music!

  23. Brian G. Says:

    Squeeze play? Maybe?

  24. Lance Says:

Coleman just said “3-1, Padres lead, they’ve got the bases loaded.”
I’ve been listening to him forever, and I love him, but the poor old goat’s losing it.
Anybody else remember how great Jerry Coleman and Dave Campbell were together 20-odd years ago. I’d match that up with Madden-Summerall, anytimg.

  25. LynchMob Says:

I love chin music … rock on :-)

  26. Geoff Young Says:

Garcia really is something at shortstop. Redding’s gone in the fourth. Walk the opposing pitcher, bad things happen.

  27. Geoff Young Says:

Gotta go make a queser for me and the wife. Be back in a little while. Have fun watching Darrell May.

  28. LynchMob Says:

PH’ing for Redding in the top of the 4th wasn’t a bad idea, in retrospect … if I do say so myself :-)
I saw Darrell May in Peoria about a month ago … saw nothing to get interested in, let alone get excited about … but long-relief situations like this seem ideal … but at age 32, it doesn’t seem like he’ll be getting better …

  29. LynchMob Says:

Dodgers get dumped 9-1 by Rox @ Coorss … good news :-)

  30. LynchMob Says:

From BA’s Daily Dish today …

Padres first baseman Michael Johnson, whose entire professional career has been played at high Class A Elsinore, is finally looking ready for a move up. Johnson slugged a three-run home run and drove in four in the Storm’s 12-2 win over High Desert, giving him a whopping 23 RBIs in 12 games with averages of .298/.362/.702.

… Michael Johnson was a teammate of Kahlil’s at Clemson … this is good news.

  31. LynchMob Says:

One more Padres’ prospect tidbit from BA’s Daily Dish …

Matt Bush, the 2004 No. 1 overall pick, hit his first professional home run in Low Class A Fort Wayne’s 8-3 win over South Bend. On the season, the Padres shortstop is hitting just .211 with five errors. Speaking of struggling first-round shortstops, Minnesota’s Trevor Plouffe recorded his third straight 0-for-4 night in Low Class A Beloit’s 3-1 win over Clinton, dropping to .068 (3-for-44) on the season.

  32. LynchMob Says:

Kerry Robinson with an HR off uber-prospect Matt Cian tonight for the AAA Portland Beavers … http://www.minorleaguebaseball.....a_poraaa_1

  33. LynchMob Says:

Not good news from Mobile …

Travis Chick (0-1) was hit harder in Wednesday’s game than his previous two starts, taking his first loss after allowing eight runs in 3.2 innings. For Mobile offensively, Merrill, Smith, and Luke Carlin each had two hits.

    … and …

A five-run fifth inning broke the game open for the Stars. The biggest, and strangest, play of the inning was when Tony Zuniga came to the plate with Nelson Cruz at first. Zuniga hit one off the bottom of the left field wall, causing BayBears outfielder Paul McAnulty to crash in the wall in an attempt to make the play. McAnulty stayed down, the ball rolled into left field, and Zuniga rounded the bases for an inside the park home run. McAnulty stayed in the game initially, but was removed one inning later.

  34. Geoff Young Says:

The decision to have Chick skip High-A seemed a little odd to me at the time.

  35. LynchMob Says:

“Watching” on Yahoo made it look like May struggled … but he got thru 2.2 IP without giving up a run … did give up 3 hits and a walk … ERA now 1.23 … too bad the guy PH’ing for him right now is Adam Hyzdu … can’t wait for one of the Beaver’s hitters (Knott, Bozied, Barfield, Johnson) to earn a promotion …

  36. LynchMob Says:

Should have included Robert Fick in that list of potential Beaver hitters … he’s the hottest guy right now … hitting .429 with a couple of HRs … http://www.baseballamerica.com.....mp;cid=248

  37. LynchMob Says:

Giles and Nevin now hitting .20x … that HURTs!!!

  38. LynchMob Says:

    Gotta run … got a 630am tee time :-)

  39. Geoff Young Says:

Good luck; catch ya next time!
